I figure this is the best thread for this, but congrats to the Gustavus women's team on their first NC. What I didn't realize is that it was the very first Div III title for any western conference team. I would not have guessed that if asked.
My boss laughs a little about this because their coach Mike Carroll was his high school coach here at Mankato West in the mid 90's and can't believe he has the temperament to coach girls hockey. Congrats to them for sure though, Carroll has them as a perennial contender now.
Do you know if Carroll is from Edina?
Yes he is
Ok - I think he played with my brother ('81 hs grad) before we moved to Tonka. There were 2 or 3 brothers that played for them.
I believe that's right that there are 3 of them plus the sister. Don't quote me on that.
I am the official Iowa Hawkeye football fan of GPL!

Yeah, if I remember correctly (a big if), one brother (Tom?) was the Strib’s metro player of the year one year and went on and played at Michigan Tech.
Didn't want to make a whole new thread but the Whitecaps, who have a few former Gophers, are currently playing Toronto in the title game on ESPN+

Mike, Steve, and Patrick all played for Mankato, I believe. I have a replica Steve Carroll jersey. He was a Hobey finalist in 1980, back when it wasn’t only division 1 players that could win it. Obviously, he didn’t win. His play in net is a big reason they won the DII title that year. Looks like Tom went to Wisconsin. There’s also a Dan and a Jim. Too many Carrolls. Their sister Ann works with the Vikings.
Yeah, did some checking and Jim is the one I was thinking of. Co-metro player of the year in ‘86 with Scott Bloom ( , Burnsville) and a solid four year career at Michigan Tech. I believe he is (or was) the p.a. guy for the Wild and Vikings.
Whitecaps game is going to OT. They zam and then do 20 minutes of 3x3 and then a shootout.
Whitecaps lost in OT. Bummer.
Interesting way to lose a recruit.

Makayla Pahl is not coming back. I believe this means she's done playing altogether.

Not Gopher related, but an interesting story

IIHF Women’s Worlds kicks off tomorrow. All U.S. games on NHL Network. Was hoping for some non-U.S. games on ESPN+, but no dice.

It was 2-1 US over Japan after one, little I saw late in the first and early second it seemed the Japan goalie was in the zone. US pumped in a couple goals in (I think) under two minutes to make it 4-1 early 2nd. The Japan goalie made a few amazing saves prior to the two goals....

I had kind of forgotten about this. Last game of the round robin portion of the tournament. Amanda Kessel scores with 3.4 seconds left in regulation to force overtime with Canada.

Skaja played an exhibition game with the Whitecaps. Would imagine she plays there next season.

The US got outplayed for the most part, but they capitalized on Canadian mistakes, which they hadn't done very much of for the last couple years. Good to see Wroblewski playing the up-and-comers like Heise and Murphy more prominently, in contrast to how Johnson handled the young players.

Interesting, I was out at Winny’s Prospects/Futures thing all weekend and I saw Natalie yesterday wearing Gopher stuff. Not ideal timing as recruiting is pretty hot and heavy this time of year.
Jess tweeted that it is now official that Darwitz is not returning per Frost. No reason given.

So, what’s the scoop? Frost’s scapegoat?
So, what’s the scoop? Frost’s scapegoat?
My guess? I don’t think Natalie wanted to devote the time needed to recruiting. Again, that is just a guess.
There’s a story up now, although it doesn’t shed much light on anything.
From the Strib--
There were indications within the program that Darwitz, a former Eagan, Gophers and Team USA standout, and head coach Brad Frost had philosophical differences.
