Not a fan of our standing still penalty kill. I think we need to pressure the puck more.
Motzko's strange love affair with the Brodzinskis continues. About the only Bison I would take off that team is Gaber and I'd gladly give them #22.
For the second night in a row the green with <20 shots.
Give Bartoskziewicz both the USNTDP game and the Bemidji game. I want him to get looks and get comfortable but…yeah
@ddillon22 they definitely need to work on the kill...probably their biggest deficiency.
Thinking back to last year when Closer had to basically take over cold it’s hard to blame Bob for giving the kid a start. It’s the only way to gain experience. Especially in a non conference game.

About the only Bison I would take off that team is Gaber.
He’s a great player. I thought #7 Jandric played great tonight also for the Fawkers.
What a wild weekend. Thoughts/comments:
1. The Gophers are special this year. I came away from this weekend super excited and hopeful. I truly believe we will outplay/out chance everybody we play. Now, winning it all, we can only hope. Maybe this is the year!
2. Bonehead decision by Pitlick. I think he basically lost his mind after scoring. I give credit to Bob for sitting him for as long as he did. Lots of lessons learned tonight.
3. Not Barto’s fault for playing, but I am really questioning Bob for starting him. Don’t get it. Play your best players.
4. Why is Brodzinski on the ice for 3 on 3? Seriously, am I missing something here?? I am dumbfounded.
5. Lacombe and Faber are incredible hockey players.
6. Want to highlight Huglen and Lamb also. They played great.
Good Post and I agree with everything stated. Brodzinski should NEVER see the ice in 3 on 3 situations (especially on a Olympic rink). I believe his guy (Senden) got the winning goal.
I couldn’t be happier with Coach Motzko leading the charge but I do not understand what he sees in Brodzinski. That poor of skater should not see the ice in a 3 on 3 situation. Plus, he had two long shifts in the last 5 minutes of regulation.
Everyone’s rebuttal is always that he scores goals, well he has one goal and no assists and is -3 through 6 games.
Why is Brodz out there at all? He has had several years to figure out his game, he seems invisible out there.
Ugh. I hate losing to these goons and their obnoxious fans. Embarrassing how many we let into OUR arena. I hope we look back at this as the point of no return of our dominance through the ‘22-‘23 season.
GO GOPHERS!

I don’t think this is a one game thing. I’m fine with them splitting weekends going forward.

He had multiple chances and nothing. Sniping opportunities is all he contributes, if he’s not burying those how is he a top 6 forward? And on this stacked team, more like top 9. He sure ain’t a 4th liner so….
I get that there’s some history here but this needs to shake out in what’s best for the team, and I hope it will.
Regarding Rhett's penalty, is there an actual rule about throwing your stick or other equipment into the crowd?

In this case, yes, it's a 10 min misconduct. He took himself off the ice for 10 minutes.
I can understand the call. Players can't be launching their sticks into the stands. That could take out an eye.
He’s a step slower than everyone else on the ice. I think it’s pretty clear. Problem like the poster above mentioned is he is by no means a 4th line player.
So where do you put him… in street clothes? I don’t have a great answer to that, but I just cannot believe he played in 3 on 3.

He's also out there frequently for the penalty kill.

Now if you’ve just won a natty you can throw your stick, body, helmet (ala Johnny Pohl) or whatever you want into the crowd….
The refs didn’t “decide the game” but calling one face mask instead of both gives them a five minute advantage that they shouldn’t have gained and definitely has a major impact. That said they were better on special teams and that can definitely swing a game even if you don’t win at even strength. I know refs try to even out the calls but it’s a really dumb philosophy that doesn’t match reality more often than not.

He was fine today lol, can’t think of a single goal today that was on him.
We’ll see in 4 hours whether that was the right call. Owen is a very good goalie.
Aaand survey says it was not the right call. We win this game with Close in net.
No.
so at the end of the day a couple of ties on the record.
Finally Motzko has a real assistant coach at his helm, Miller is a jem.
Nice to see the joint Rockin for a weekend.

Probably because he was 6th on the team in scoring last year and only Knies and Lacombe from this year’s team outscored Bryce last year.
Add to that the fact Bryce adds senior leadership in a team with 10 freshmen and tBob feels he is an asset.
That may change in after the World juniors, once the newbies are settled in.

It’s an odd take by Maroon and Gold. First two goals were deflections off skates and the third popped 15feet straight up in the air and would have landed in the crease if the fHawk player didn’t bat it into the net. Not much on Bart to say Close would have changed the outcome.
It isn’t like Close is some high end goalie Wizzard. He is a solid goalie, but let’s not put him in Hobey contention just yet.
Also Bart is supposed to be a very solid goalie that we may all want in net by the end of the season. I don’t think it’s a bad thing to have Bart in net and I don’t think the outcome is different with Close in net.

And another one hit him, hit off a guy's body, and went in. Not often you can get out shot and outplayed that much and win. Weird game.
I give Barto another start next weekend. None of the goals were really on him but you had to pull him after 4. Spark the team and I think you’d risk giving up a softie after that. Young kid, 4 quick ones can rattle you.
I think the best thing to do for his confidence is to toss him back in.

I think a couple of those stick to Close’s sweater. He’s great at swallowing rebounds. But I agree I wasn’t sitting there like gee Bartoskziewicz is losing us the game, it was our undisciplined play in the second period that started it all.
But like I said, imo Close vacuums some of those rebounds.

As I understand it, "misconduct" calls warrant extra time and are called at the discretion of the ref. Not every possible contingency is covered in the book, but abuse of officials or disrupting play is one of them.
I thought Pitlick’s goal and celly was pretty awesome, whatever the repercussions. Dumb rule or call, whichever it was.
The goal was great. The celly was stupid. If you think having a stick hurled into the crowd is “awesome” and a “dumb rule”, what can I say?
And I found the mini donuts lol. Still microwaved, but now across from the PR table.
Note: Due to inflation dirty deeds will no longer be done dirt cheap.
I’ve been one of the biggest Bryce defenders on here because last year although he was questionable he was at least scoring goals. I’ll admit it’s getting a little harder this year.
Last night I thought he made good decisions with the puck throughout regulation but yeah idk why Bob sent him over the boards in OT.
5 on 5 the gophers were a faster team. They could rush into the Whiouxs zone at will, and also gophs pestered north dakota backchecking. Matthew Knies seemingly has a magical ability to take the puck away from an opposing player. Knies carrying the puck used his speed and strength to get the puck deep instead of doing a pretty toe drag.
On the powerplay, Im not sure how do you dont feed Jimmy in the ovi spot. Against Mankota, he rifled the puck so fast you couldn't even see it go in. At least once a game on the pp thats gotta be a set play.
I support the coach's decision to bench Pitlicks. He was having a great weekend but it was a boneheaded decision. It was all down hill after the stick throw.
On to the gophers big ten title defense!
What a fun weekend!
Already looking forward to next year in Grand Forks. We have already put in motion to do a live podcast from the Ralph Thursday evening that weekend.

I have some mixed feelings about last night but overall I’m actually not really upset. I’m also really excited about this team and what they can do this year. Pitlick’s stick toss, while amusing, was so dumb and you could tell that’s where things started to unravel. The penalties after that were just killer. I don’t think Barto was at fault for all of those goals but from what I saw the first and fourth ones were pretty soft. Maybe I missed something. Also the first one gave UND life and let them back in the game. But at the same time our penalty kill needs to be better. We knew UND was going to crash the net, throw everything on goal and that’s exactly what they did. Worked like a charm for them too. I mean seriously, how do you give up four goals in like 5 or 6 minutes in one of your biggest games of the whole year. But, I was very happy with how our young team fought it’s way back into the game. They could have totally just folded or just played to keep it from being embarrassing. Gopher teams of a few years ago probably would have done that. If it wasn’t for some crazy bounces and some excellent goaltending by DeRidder, gophers win that game all night long. It sucks to lose to UND but I’m really excited going forward. I think we have something really special here. If they keep they’re stuff together, don’t get too cocky but continue to play with some confidence and swagger, we should be in for a really fun year. Seems like a lot of people are actually pretty optimistic as well. The social media comments section after a loss are always toxic but actually last night, aside from the usual trolls, they were of the same tone as GPL. I’ve never seen that. Like everyone has been saying, this could be an awesome season. Let’s enjoy the ride.
They’ll lose about 5 defenseman from an already shaky defensive unit. Oliver Moore will skate circles around their team and put up a hat trick? Love making predictions a year from gameday
Edit: in response to Jup
How good was Nevers this weekend?? Kid absolutely came to play!

Agreed. If this weekend is any indication we’re looking at a 30+ win team. I mean we’re still waiting for a guy named Logan Cooley to get going.

The first goal went off a defenseman’s (Johnson?) skate in the crease and in. No one makes that save.

If they are using USA hockey rules, it should have been a game misconduct.
Some of the experts over at SS seem to conclude that if only they could have blocked a couple more shots, they might have come out with a sweep. True enough. However, they seem to forget the door swings both ways. If not for a couple pool shot goals and a goal tender presumably playing the best two games of his career while stopping over 38 shots both nights, they might have been blown out on the scoreboard as badly as they were on the ice. Hey, that's hockey.
Minnesota lost its cool for 5 or six minutes last night, and it cost them the game. Credit the Bison for making them pay. They had zilch going until then and no answer for the wave after wave of white jerseys attacking attacking attacking. Then the penalties.
It hurt badly that Pitlick was out for 15 minutes, because they had no answer for him. It was costly that Cooley got kicked out not only for the penalty but even more so that he wasn't on the ice during the third period or available for OT. I still don't get why Nelson took a second shift in OT.
That site is great for bad takes. Though some days I feel like keeping some braincells. Haven’t wandered over there in a bit and I think I’ll keep it that way lol

So when ND#25 took the 5 minute and game misconduct last night, we were once again sitting next to his parents. His dad was pissed. At him. Dumb dumb penalty.

Ok, got it. That makes more sense. Then yeah there’s not much Barto can do on that one. Just some bad bounces and some rotten luck. Sounds like Bob was more disappointed with the team game during those five minutes than he was disappointed with Bart. I certainly feel bad for the kid and I hope he gets another shot.
Just watched the post game interviews from last night. I would not want to be Rhett Pitlick on Monday. I think the young man is about to get an ear full.
The poor kid is also getting just absolutely clowned all over social media and the internet. Including outlets that don’t really follow college hockey. He will never live this one down.

The stick throw wasn’t great but honestly he just scored a goal before it to make it 2-0, it also didn’t cause a short handed situation.
Cooley on the other hand facemasked a guy and they got a 5 min penalty out of it that turned the game completely. THAT should be getting way more focus than Rhett’s decision making.

Very good point. I think it’s fair to say that the emotions and intensity of the moment got the best of some of our players a time or two.
Exactly and that’s where I hope this team can just focus on hockey from here on out for the most part. It’s an emotional game regardless of the opponent but the North Dakota series is emotions on steroids for fans and players ?

Taking himself out of the game for 10 minutes, plus what the coach gave him, very well may have factored into the loss. The Bison had no answer for him, and he was dangerous every time he had the puck.
He's a kid that got jacked up and made a mistake. But it was a selfish and costly one, as Bob reminded him of by putting him at the end of the bench.
I think the reason that the call wasn't made on UND was that Motzko did not challenge the play. UND asked for the review for facemasking on the Gophers. Motzko did not. I suspect that they can only review what was requested.
