I think the reason that the call wasn't made on UND was that Motzko did not challenge the play.  UND asked for the review for facemasking on the Gophers.  Motzko did not.  I suspect that they can only review what was requested.

I agree, idk why Motzko didn’t challenge it and was saying he should at the time. My guess is that if the refs don’t agree and the challenge is overruled it would’ve been a 2 min 5x3 and then they still have to kill off the rest of the major PP. Ideally they just call both in real time and there’s no guarantee they call the other facemask the way they were reffing that one. The refs had a lot of other head scratchers too like whatever happened to Knies off the puck on that one shift or the blatant interference in Johnson that didn’t get called.

And I agree that Rhett shouldn’t have done that obviously and it definitely was a factor but Cooley is a better overall player and his decision gave UND the major that ultimately turned the game around waaay more than Pitlick’s because they tied the game off the extended PP. I don’t think the refs were good yesterday and it played a factor in the outcome but you have to control what you can and both of those decisions were costly.

I haven't read every post about last night, but I just watched tBob's postgame interview and he basically said everything I was thinking.  I feel really badly for Bartoszkiewicz since it wasn't his fault we lost our composure nor was it when we forgot what the heck we were supposed to be doing when Pitlick went into the box.  It's easy to judge these things in hindsight, but apart from *maybe* the goal where Barto was fooled by traffic to his left leaving a wide open net on his right, I don't see Close doing much better and even if he would have made that save, it's anyone's guess how the game would have unfolded after that (ex. would we have scored our 4th goal had we not be trailing in the 3rd?).  Fortunately for Barto, Close absorbed that loss and pulling him had more to do with getting everyone else to screw their heads back on straight.  He'll get more chances in conference play.

One criticism I have is that tBob should have had our guys ready for UND gooning it up once we went up 2-0.  That has been their biggest weapon for quite some time, especially this year, and it's particularly effective against us whenever we have a young team, so it's not like this came out of nowhere.

Not only did the Gophers look good, the hawks looked really really bad all weekend. Like weirdly bad. Was genuinely more impressed with Lindenwood than UND

Maybe this has been mentioned but Brodzinski standing in front of our net not acting the role of an upperclassman clearing the man out who scored the game winner was puzzling. Is it that he doesn’t do defense or that he didnt know what to do?  If he could escalate his game effort up to the level of a good player, that’d be great.

That game reminded me of 40 years ago when I was a pro wrestling fan and every time the bad guy pulled a dirty trick the ref pretended he didn't see it.

Kelly Panek was excellent on Bally’s yesterday.

Record beer sales this weekend?

Curious how people feel 3-4?? years into alcohol at Mariucci, IIRC it wasn’t a unanimous pro-alcohol sales crowd here on GPL, I’m curious if the issues people were concerned about have arisen or do people even notice anymore?

We certainly noticed the bathroom lines from everyone having to give back the alcohol!

alcohol sales don’t bother me apart from when lines get long, they take up a good portion of the concourse and make it a bit congested.  Although bathroom lines do too as people don’t understand how to wrap around the entrance and line up with the concourse, not across it.

I do feel bad for the folks that have to clean up after games.  What a mess.  We always make it a point to bring up all our cans and food trays.  Too bad everyone didn’t do the same.

I haven't seen any drunk idiots, which was my main concern.  I also doubted the main selling point that it'd solve attendance issues, but with things starting to get back to the way they were, that's kind of moot.

On Saturday our row was full of young kids. We noticed they had signs for Jaxon Nelson. We talked to them and they came up to the game from Luverne. None were related to him but wanted to come up and see him play. It is neat to see the impact of the Farm Kid having on hockey in southwestern Mn and I'm sure glad that tBob honored his commitment to the U, even though he didn't recruit him.

I'm 50% factual and 50% sarcastic. When you get to know me, you will know which is which.

Observations from the weekend: Whioux were ready to CRUMBLE Saturday…then Pitlick does something stupid, Gophers subsequently take some penalties & ND takes puck to net and scores some goals, which gave them life, can't do that against rivals. But overall a very good weekend, Snuggy is really GOOD, a split without much contribution from Cooley. Faber & Lacombe looked really good too. Why they put Brodz in front of the net on power play is beyond me. Pitlick can Buzz & farm boy Nelson should have a nice senior year, I’ll stubbornly stick with opinion that if they'd set up Brodz to shoot on PP, they'd be even better. Snuggy has a great release on his shot thou, no denying that...penalty kill needs to be better, although Whioux had puck luck on the power play. And I didn't even mention Knies, who scored an EPIC goal Friday to win it, but clearly misses playing on a line with Ben Meyers...

The storyline going around is that Pitlicks stick toss was the catalyst. Not true. It stayed 5 on 5 after that so of course we dominated. It wasn’t until Thomas’s boarding call (that Bob called soft) that UND really started to get pucks to the net and fool Barto. If the game stays 5 on 5 even with Pitlick sitting we 100% run away with the game. At even strength the two teams weren’t even on the same planet.

lol…with some of the comments U make maroon & gold, I have to question if you actually ever played hockey. ? Pitlick stick toss put him in the box, plus tBob benched one of his best players (appropriately I might add). . .and momentum changed from that point on.

Yes I’ve played plenty of hockey. Bob benched Pitlick for most of the third and we were, stop me if you’ve heard this before, absolutely all over them and eventually tied it up. The catalyst was taking penalties that resulted in extended PK time. If Pitlick’s dumb penalty is the only one of the second period we run away with the game.

Brodz wasn’t put in front, he went there and did, uh, I don’t know what.
Why put Brodzinski in front for a PP shot when you even say other players are better shooters- Snuggerud, Pitlick, …, …,

If he started playing and not coasting trying to get a pass to shoot on the net he might be good enough for this team.  He shoots the puck around the boards when he enters the zone for another player to dig out of the corner and positions himself in front.  He is good on the boards but doesn’t like not scoring, I’m not a fan.  Why is Motzko so in love with Brodzinski?

At ten bucks a beer the younger folks who normally come in lit up probably aren't buying at that price. Bison fans notwithstanding, the elder sect who can tolerate the price are probably not having more than two tall boys anyway.

I have not noticed any drunken excessiveness at the games. Now, Dinkytown after the game...oof.
