Closing out games in Mariucci has been a massive problem for UND in recent years.

This was the fifth time in the last 11 games between the rivals in Mariucci that UND has allowed a game-tying or game-winning goal in the final three minutes of regulation.

I’d like to see the face of stats.  The Gophers seemed to win some very key face off, especially on the PK.  That’ll be a big advantage if the Gophers can win face offs.  It always seems to be a struggle.

The fHawks player that Knies beat at the end was Jandric (surprisingly a defenseman).  He couldn’t have played that worse.  Jandric’s stick blade was knee high the whole time Knies handled the puck and it appeared he assumed Knies would play the puck possession game and look to pass along the blue line.  There was no attempt by Jandric to put stick on puck or block passing lanes.

Knies took advantage of this laziness and took it from zero to 100, much to the surprise if Jandric.

love it!

One of the best 6x5 on the fly goals I’ve seen. What was Nevers ice time on that shift.. 6 seconds?!?!?!

Great game! Probably my favorite game I’ve ever been to at Mariucci and honestly, one of the most exciting sporting events I’ve been to live. I thought the Gophers looked a little sloppy at times. Part of that is credit to UND. But overall played better and better as the game went on. Awesome atmosphere! Absolutely incredible! I agree that although the UND fans were loud, the make up of the arena was about 75-25 gopher fans. Especially when including the student section. I hope the Gophers clean it up a bit for tonight because if they do, I certainly feel good about our chances. But we all know how hard it is to sweep, especially in a big rivalry series. So they’ll have to be ready for that. I love how they didn’t give up. There were a couple of head scratching plays but the boys were more than up for this physical and emotional test. Good to see Knies get one. That was some big boy hockey. Let’s do it again tonight! Go Gophers!!

My 2 cents--

Tremendous atmosphere at the rink last night. I hope the STH that normally don't go to games are now back on board or have people willing to take their tix. As much as I would prefer 10,400 Gopher fans in the building, the Whioux fans made the building loud.

Great team effort last night. Always good to come back and win instead of giving up the lead late.

The wife lost her voice after yelling the rouser on the last 2 goals.

I still feel the lines are still a work in progress. Though it is tough to really judge against really good teams like UND. Not sure if Cooley, Snuggy and Knies are the right fit.

Cooley plays much more physical than I expected. Also, I have a feeling he is a chirper and gets underneath opponents skin.

Pitlick was all over the ice, but a bit off. Missed on a couple of breakaways by missing the puck and had a great chance to shoot late in the 3rd and held on to the puck too long.

The only player I get nervous about on the ice is Thomas. But these games will help his growth.

Bad penalty by the Farm Kid tonight. But he was 12-6 in draws.

UND will be ok. I just question if they can play well enough to cover up for their goalie.

There are a few arena issues I noticed, but will comment on those after the weekend series ( hint-- attention to details )

UND is a good team but did not play like it at all imo. Sloppy in their own end and didn’t really possess the puck at all.

From the sounds of the game (I listened to the radio broadcast) UND played well, but MN just played better. MN's intensity went to 11 last night. It'll be interesting to see if MN can bring that same energy tonight, or if UND changes strategy a little, and tries to slow the game down.

I think MN caused this, especially when everyone on the back end is a threat with the puck it really allows MN to control the flow. I look for UND to float forwards in the neutral zone more tonight when the puck is their end to try and eliminate MN’s D from being part of the forecheck.

I felt UND did a pretty good job of neutralizing Gophers' top line all night. A lot of the shots came from outside.  They are an older team and play with a lot of discipline. The Gophers have more talent.

MN had 2 weeks off, which usually backfires. I'm thinking they may be even sharper tonight. It's early in the season, but after last night and the previous weekend, UND might be a little desperate tonight.

Yikes. Don’t want to be the others who combined for 6-14.

I guess we know the top 2 centers.

Here’s a stat for ya: there’s only been ONE goal all season that the defensemen didn’t factor in. The season’s very first goal against Lindenwood (Nelson from Knies and Cooley on PP). EVERY OTHER GOAL has either been scored or assisted on by a defenseman?

Huglen 8-6

Pinoniemi 2-7

So it looks like Pinoniemi is the one that needs to improve.  Huglen was over 50%, which OK.

Most fun I’ve had in that building in over a decade. What a fantastic atmosphere and entertaining game.

The post-goal rousers had the most rhythmically sound “MINNESOTA”s in quite some time. ? Great job, everyone.

It can be hard for me to tell, since I'm up against the glass right where the mob was after the Knies goal last night.  Was it as loud in there as I thought it was?

Yes.

Took a quick peek at the Bison website and most of their commentary is pretty sensible, ref complaints notwithstanding. Someone else made the same observation I did that MN still has a ton of upside ahead of them, given their number of freshmen.

This team is playing like it's already Christmas, and there's more left in the tank. They haven't even settled into their system, yet they're beating more experienced teams.

Overall, the comments on SS were pretty measured.  They were commenting that MN is better and faster than the Hawks, DeRidder kept them in the game, and they are worried that today could be a blowout.

To me, the band helps define the college experience. Bison fans don't know what they're missing until they see it. We had a whole row of puke-green jerseys who craned their heads every time the band struck up, like it was some curious novelty they were drawn to

  2. Snuggerud
  3. Lamb
  4. Strobel
  5. Pinoniemi
  6. Kurth
  7. L. Mittelstadt
  8. Chesley
  9. Thomas

Plus, J. Mittelstadt didn't dress last night.

That was a little TOO intense, I loved it!  We sat next to ND#25 parents, dad used to play for Michigan.  They were nice, dad spent the whole game with a stopwatch timing #25 icetime.  And as mentioned about the band, they were also fascinated with the cheer team. (Interesting note: I counted 3 different cheer uniforms, and we haven’t seen their “dance” one, plenty of money in their budget lol)
Overall great atmosphere, LOUD!  Too much green but oh so sweet in the end.
And we were disappointed in the arena food choices.  No gyros, no BBQ, no mini donuts, no Lotus, no Jax.  Fewer because the last few years have been disappointing attendance or because of the upcoming renovations are they cutting back?

When people tell me I’ll regret not having kids, I say that’s okay I know a really good place to cry. It’s my vacation home.

I doubt it since vender contracts would have been signed a long time ago.  Plus, most of the venders I mentioned are outside the U.  I know a few people who work booths at the arena…they are not Teamsters and the possible strike isn’t them.  So no.

Just re-watched the Knies goal again.  Avoids the two-handed slash on his stick but gets tripped up a bit, and while he's falling, reaches his stick out and partway around the defender to flip it in.  Such an incredible effort.

Mini donuts have been gone since around the time I got season tickets. I think the last season Jax was there was 2019-20. If by bbq you mean Famous Dave's, they've been gone at least as long as Jax. I dont know about the gyros or Lotus.

They haven’t made mini donuts from scratch for a long time, but they sold them last season over near the Club entrance. Microwaved atrocious frauds.   And I’m almost positive Famous Dave’s was still there last season too.  Their pulled pork sandwich is always my first choice.  But I guess the question is why the lack of choices?  I see lots of blank space that used to have food kiosks.

I'll concede the atrocious fraud mini donuts. I don't eat 'em, so I don't pay attention to that. As for Famous Dave's, last year the panini shop took over the permanent booth. The season before that was 2020-21 - no fans, so that makes 2019-20 the last year for Jax and Famous Daves.

I don't know if it was intentional, hard to say if he even noticed it, but on the GWG Knies stalled just long enough while the defender that was in the slot vacated that area, allowing him to go one on one and beat his man with a beautiful move under his stick and a quick shot. A beautiful and hard nosed play!
