?If this goes OT and 3 on 3 we're toast. St. Thomas has been skating circles around us.
I went out tonight and recorded the game and did my best not to spoil it but still kinda figured out what the ending was. What I didn’t know was the score or sequencing of events so I wasn’t all that stressed watching it but the game was still interesting to witness.
I think back to the start of the 2nd where gophers had the PP and Moore by some stroke of luck didn’t score to make it 3-0. Not long after it was 2-2 which eventually became 4-2 etc. The fifth goal of St. Thomas was kind of a weird one. I thought the gophers were the better team much of the third period but overall it was a pretty even game and it was a loosely played early season game.
This game by itself doesn’t mean much, the gophers got 66% of a win or whatever it is for PWR purposes and if they win tomorrow that’s a good start to the year. Last years team split a lot of early season games vs UND, SCSU, Mankato, and ASU with the only sweep being Lindenwood IIRC.
Well, that wasn't pretty, but at least we salvaged 0.6667 (or whatever the percentage is now) in OT. It was pretty clear what UST was up to when their penalty killer slide into the neutral zone while our guys were looking the other way. Didn't think it was going to be off Snuggerud fanning on a pass, but that shorty had us discombobulated until the early 3rd.
Though credit should also go to Snuggy for igniting our rally with the quick PPG (as well as the OT GWG).
Rico had UST well prepared for regulation, but he didn't seem to have a game plan for overtime. He must just be happy to get the 0.3333 and giving us the big scare in regulation.
I had heard in the podcast that Rico hit the portal hard over the offseason, but I had no idea he grabbed familiar foes (Malmquist and Donovan from Wisco, Marooney from OSU). If that part was covered in the podcast, I must have zoned out.

This was another good early season game for the Gophers. As Coach said that there were many "learning opportunities" to be discussed in film work in the morning . . . .
Looking for a shutout for the Closer!
Go Gophers!
Not knowing what to do, they do what they know . . .
Knowing what to do, they sometime don't do it . . .
The 26th year of the Gopher Men's Hockey Profile got to be too much for this ol' codger to handle . . . what with all of the possible activity on the transfer portal . . . . So, I'm closing it down at the 25th year . . .
I thought it was a fun game to watch and was really impressed with UST, they will win a lot of games this year. Rico has them on a nice trajectory. Also, I think he knows that beating a top 5 team could be helpful at the end of the year, he was basically playing 2 lines all game so he was definitely doing whatever he could to win this one.
Glad to see Lamb and Snuggy each get a few. Will be good to see that line start to gel as the year goes, spending more time in the offensive zone will be important for them. I thought the Huglen line looked really good, lots of O zone time and Pitlick was noticeably tenacious out there. Beautiful setup and snipe by Nelson. I was impressed with Clark, he doesn't look out of place, and Strobel was noticeably faster than last year and had some nice puck control/offensive moments. The D will take a while to come together, but with Koester out they will all get a lot of playing time which will be beneficial.
Also sorry but this is not a rivalry.
Not right now, no, it's not. It can eventually be, maybe, years down the road.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
Not yet. I agree with Rube - it could be one day but it will be tough doing that solely NC since there's no guarantee they'll play each other every year.
I was able to catch the second and third periods last night, the second had me covering my eyes and the third saw what this team will be. I couldn't be happier for my guy Huglen to get the scoring started, I just like what he does everywhere on the ice and I hope to see his line really contribute to the scoring this season.
Other players that made an impression were Rinzel, Kurth, and Lamb. For a big guy Rinzel can skate and really positions himself very well to keep pucks in the zone and play near the crease on D. Kurth and Lamb have both taken that next step forward with a nose for the puck. I didn't notice Moore as much as I thought I would but I have no doubt he will be noticeable all season. Close played very well just got beat by some good shots.
St Thomas going into this season people knew they were not going to be the pushover of two years ago with the additions from the portal and just the development of the program. They are going to mix things up in the CCHA this year for sure. The CCHA is going to be Tech's to lose but I think both St Thomas and MSU will surprise those who think they can look past them.
I am the official Iowa Hawkeye football fan of GPL!
Well, I had fun going to that one. I always find it funny that gopher hockey fans think the national championship is at stake during the first game. I'm no gopher hockey encyclopedia but I'd guess the starts of seasons usual aren't the prettiest. Unless its the 100th anniversary covid season where the gophers beat ASU 20 to nothing or something. Really liked what I saw out of the Strobel Mittelstadt and Clark line.
Parrish is a lot of things...a tool isn't one of them. He is legit one of the nicest and most genuine people I have ever met...even before he got sober. Ask around you won't give meant people who have a bad thing to say about him and I suspect you wouldn't either if Woog hadn't been an idiot when recruiting him.
Parrish behind the mic both for hockey and radio is a tool. He’s the biggest tool on the morning show. Outside of that he’s a great guy. And I’ve heard the same like you from others. I always find it funny how people call a coach out for not recruiting a certain player and landing them after the fact and not before.
Keep your stick on the ice...
Rivalry or not, I hope a game at the X between these two teams becomes an annual thing until the Tommies new rink is finished.
Not much detail in here, but sounds like Bob lit the team up after the second period.

While I was heading to the box between the benches for the 3rd, the door to the locker room was open and there was definitely raised voices. I walked by very fast, so I didn't hear any specifics. I just wanted to get by quickly and get to my spot.

Did anyone else catch the STU video during one of the puck stoppages. The two STU players and the hot dog in a box and at the end mone player took off his dentures to eat the hotdog… Lol.

The way they came out for the first 5 minutes, there was definitely a come Jesus moment and a trash can kicked.
I still remember my Jr. year and losing to a team we were far more better than. Coached kicked the trash can so hard after the game, it still hasn’t landed 30 years later… lol!!!

@maroon_and_gold this one won’t ever be a “rivalry” to anyone in maroon and gold. tArrogance will not allow it
Depends on how good they get. Just sayin'.
that's very true. UMD wasn't a rival until they started hanging banners until then, they were just another win.
all it takes is one game or one series. Every rivalry starts with that. The Series or The Game.
I really felt like our rivalry with MSU started in that spectacular three-game WCHA tournament series.
Boy, St Thomas is better than I expected. Especially after we took the early lead to stay calm and come back was impressive. Bringing in that portal depth really helped them out.
Do I think we were the better team, of course I do. But we also survived giving up 2 goal leads twice.
This was one of those games that get away from us sometimes and they hung on and got a win.
For those dogging on Parrish, you couldn't be more wrong. I love people that love college hockey and he clearly does. I think he likes NHL but college and high school are another level for him. At least that is how it seems to me. I seem to be the only one that relishes having someone against us in the booth. To hear them have to eat their words is fun.
Great kickoff to the season. Ski-U-Mah!
I don't think Tommy expected him to take it to the net. Probably thought he would turn back and regroup like they'd been doing.

That is one of the best and most unique angles of any goal I've ever seen. It's amazing how such a seemingly ho-hum moment can in an instant turn into a dangerous situation and in this case a winning goal. Thanks for sharing.
Lost in all the late game heroics by Lamb and Snuggerud is that Huglen got his first goal out of the way early which is HUGE.
Just as likely as another close game is the potential that was kind of the chance for UST to steal one. And with that and being at home, you could also see a 5-1 type win for the Gophers tonight.
Parrish was absolutely not anti-Gopher while calling the game. I couldn't count on less than two hands the number of times he complimented the Gophers, and complimenting the other team when they do something well also is not 'anti-Gopher' - it's called color commentary. He takes a bit getting used to, but I liked him overall and his enthusiasm for the game is infectious.
Also sorry but this is not a rivalry.
I finally watched more of the game...Parrish was definitely not anti-Gopher. He was surprised St. Thomas was playing as well as they were so he focused on that (on their broadcast...imagine that) and even when the Gophs were playing bad in the second still was talking about their talent and giving them kudos. He obviously was out of practice but he was better than most non-Gopher announcers we get stuck with.
And yeah, this aint a rivalry. It might turn into one because of proximity but that will take a while.
@the-rube It became a rivalry at the start of the third period.
No it didnt. One game is not enough...especially the first game of a season. It takes years of back and forth games at each others barns and the playoffs and lots of bad blood to form a rivalry not 2 periods of hockey in a neutral site game at the beginning of a season. Otherwise we would be rivals with 3/4 of the teams we have played throughout history. We have been playing Bemidji State for almost 20 years I wouldn't call them a rival.
Rivalries are bred from familiarity as much location and that isn't a thing yet. The atmosphere was good but that is not a rivalry. Right now this a novelty not a game most are going to circle on their calendars as a game that gets the blood boiling.
Your sarcasm meter is not working. Handy was making fun of if the over reaction of posters during the game using an old quote and I was riding along.it’s up thereOh no. Now we’re in 75% of a win territory. Or 25% if you kind of lose.
Top 5 loss?
Not even close….
?

I don't think Tommy expected him to take it to the net. Probably thought he would turn back and regroup like they'd been doing.
Yeah I kinda knew how the game end and when it happened I was like "wait I didnt see THAT coming!". Pretty obvious they didn't think he was going to the net and figured he would pull up and look for either a quick shot or pass and he just saw a lane and took it. Man he is fun to watch!
If St Thomas couldn't get up for a game against the Gophers they wouldn’t belong in Div 1. Gophers had a huge target on their backs. St Thomas will get their fair share of talent. THEN after a bunch of games with the Gophers will become a rival.
I know most everyone expects and wants this years team to pick up where last years squad was at . it won't. We lost 5 nhl'ers, are missing a top d and forward to injury right now, need time to gel and finds its way and create its own identity.
Give this team time:
Love 7 and 77
81 .. big time gamer
11 strong first game
4th line was a pleasant surprise
Loved that we came back
I already have more excitement about games against a cross town D1 team with mostly Minnesotans than for games against OSU, PSU, and MSU. FWIW
UST will be at Mankato rivalry level quickly.
yeah. I see St Thomas taking a Mankato trajectory. Might come a little faster since they are already a target school for players/families in the cities. If St Thomas couldn't get up for a game against the Gophers they wouldn’t belong in Div 1. Gophers had a huge target on their backs. St Thomas will get their fair share of talent. THEN after a bunch of games with the Gophers will become a rival.
The portal should help to accelerate their improvement like it has this year.
It will be fun to watch the program grow into D1.
I really felt like our rivalry with MSU started in that spectacular three-game WCHA tournament series.
Agreed. What a great series, and thats where we got the instant classic "Woogism" “Everybody in the building is standing except for people in a wheelchair"
RIP Wooger!
Just heard St Thomas added 436 games of experience thru the transfer portal this past off season

Just made a comment to a friend of mine that the new transfer rules make it much easier to build a team quickly with experienced players. UST has done exactly that.
I would hope Minnesota will have a little different attitude tonight. Last night was like an NBA basketball game...defense was optional. Knock those braces off Cindy Brady's teeth.
Watching the replay and I think Snuggy gets as excited for his teammates goals as he does his own. Saw it last year too. I’ll never not crack up at him jumping into the glass and celebrating with a fan after Knies scored the OT winner against Michigan.

He does this little hop on his skates after goals which is always entertaining.
I don't think I've seen a mention of Pitlick's almost highlight reel goal in the first where he jumped over the puck to receive the pass and one time a shot from the off hand side. Would have been sick.

I remember that. That dude is a walking highlight reel.
If anyone needs a parking pass for tonight, let me know, when I sold my ticket, it didn't link with the parking pass.

I agree. 5-2 or 6-2 Gophers win.
And chat will be going, as usual.

Snuggy doing Snuggy things!!!!
The Gopher PP is now 3 for 6 on the weekend (2 for 4 last night and 1 for 2 so far tonight)
I'll take a 50% Power Play.
Fool Snuggy once, shame on him… try to fool Snuggy twice, shame on you.
Keep your stick on the ice...
That Mittelstadt/Chesley pairing scares me out there.
Gophers look like they're playing not to lose right now.
