I think people may be taking the complaining a wee bit too seriously.
Congrats to Ben. I say this as a Wild fan. I don't blame him for signing with the Avs. It just seems to me that most former Gophers that end up signing with the Wild don't live up to the fans expectations and the fans turn on them.
I'm 50% factual and 50% sarcastic. When you get to know me, you will know which is which.
The Meyers news is disappointing to say the least.
It's the NHL. He'll be on 3 different teams in the next 5 years.
Honestly I don't blame Ben for signing one bit. I agree with F4Champs that most Gopher players haven't lived up to the pressure of playing in their "home" state. We as fans enjoy them playing for the Wild but they just didn't lead the charge on a mediocre team.
Good luck to Ben and I hope you stick in the big league!

I couldn't care less... He was a Gopher and will always be a Gopher. Just like when if a wisconSIN or UND player plays for the Wild. As long as he makes the team better... I couldn't care less if he was a BADger or F'ing Hawk.
I'm the opposite. Can't support the Wild if they have a Whioux or badger. My order of cheering for teams to win the Cup:
(# former Gophers x production/importance to team factor) - (# former whioux and badgers x production/importance to team factor)

Nope. The Whioux lost a player this past off season in late August and Nick Leddy left the Gophers after Chicago's summer camp one year.

I am a firmer believer that when Gopher players have success in the NHL it helps Gopher recruiting. Go Ben Meyers!!! Score a hundred goals a season and lose every game against the Wild. #PerfectScenario
Exactly how I feel. Happy for Ben and I wish him a ton of success, but I hope he has all that success on a team that misses the playoffs as I cannot stand the Avs or their fan base.

Hard agree here.
NHL hockey is fine and whatever, but college hockey matters infinitely more to me personally.

How did your NHL support math work for the Wild back in 2015-16?
Vanek, Haula, Mike Reilly, and Schroeder
Vs
Parise and Suter
That's a good spot for him
Can you give us some insight on why the AV’s are a good spot (for Ben)? Thanks!
Was everyone this upset last year when Sampo Ranta left early to go to the Avs? Or was this just because people got their hopes up that Meyers would choose the Wild and felt betrayed?
Meh...the Avs are hardly what I consider a rival as a Wild fan. (the NHL tries too damned hard to create rivalries) Then again I also don't fear them like everyone else does because when the playoffs come around they will find a way to underachieve.
Congrats to Ben.

Who's a bigger one? It's not Chicago and it's not St. Louis, though they should be. Chicago was a great rivalry back when the North Stars were good.
Minnesota's rivalries it seems are as ambiguous as its logo.

Seems to me it’s Winnipeg and Colorado, but who knows.

Vegas too for some reason...probably just running into them in playoffs.
I don’t think there is a clear rival right now.
i remember when the fan base wanted to shoe in the canucks as the wilds main rival
Why do I feel like all kinds of Gopher news will break tomorrow at 4:01?
Would have loved to have seen Meyers go somewhere else because I don't care for the Avs but I wish him well.

Exactly. I’ll root for him but not the Avs.

I don’t blame Ben for choosing the Avs or dislike him for it. I just dislike the Avs. Ranta was drafted by them. Ben chose them. I just really, really despise that team and fanbase, but will cheer for him (when he isn’t playing the wild). Erik Johnson can go pound sand though.

I don't think people here are really "upset" and are mostly embellishing their reaction. I hate COL and didn't like hearing he signed with that franchise but at the same time not really. In the end I'm very happy for Ben and I hope he has a great NHL career.
Watching the first couple minutes of this COL/LA game. Meyers will fit in great with this team.
So do LaCombe and Johnson announce they’re coming back or do we just wait in baited breath until it fizzles out

That, and the Kings could really use Faber.

Congratulations to Ben Meyers. Every team in the league was open to compete for him, and he picked the best team for his individual needs. I root for all former Gopher players in the league, and like someone said above, that is good for the future of the team if players are successful in the NHL.
Anyone know if Johnson become become a UFA by staying another year? He’s drafted by Buffalo…

We wait. Your breath will apparently be baited. I’ll just eventually find out.
Come October we will have our answer.

Johnson and LaCombe can both become UFA at the end of next season if they decide to stay.

He's a high-priced Washington lobbyist, peddling influence.

This is more unnecessarily complex then the unnecessary Randy Ratio.

If what Vegoe said is true, which I don’t see why it wouldn’t be, that is really too bad about Johnny Sorenson. I know there are a lot of different factors but I just feel really bad for everyone involved to have to tell a guy who busted his butt for three years that there’s no room for him. Just an all around unfortunate situation.
Agreed. Hate to see a guy like that go. At least he has a couple of banners to show for it. He should also be a big contributor wherever he goes.

He has a disdain for Minnesota Wild fans (and has made that very clear publicly) and the feeling has become very much mutual.
How does Meyers fit in in Colorado? I am not very familiar with their lineup, but considering they are one of the best teams in the league with a number of high end players, does he really have a clear path to play on their NHL squad?

They have a lot of UFA's this summer and will need to shed some salary. That should open up a path for Ben to secure a spot next year.

Probably because a Wild fan went after him when he was at a charity event posing for a photo with a kid with cancer. I do not blame Eric at all. Vegoe showed me the tweet last night. Just sickening.

Well, that's incredibly sad. Never heard that story.
Question - if Meyers plays the rest of the regular season with the Av's but not in the playoffs (not allowed) does he get his name on the Cup if they win it?
no

The team could potentially give him a ring/etc, but as Jup said, no name on the cup this year.

A player must play at least 41 games played with the Stanley Cup winning team or one game in the Stanley Cup Finals.

I don't know all the backstory here. Does Johnson have a track record of playing dirty in the NHL?
I do have to say, Johnson was one of the most disappointing Gopher players in my life. With all the fanfare he came in with, he didn't impress me a ton as a college player. He's obviously had a long NHL career though.
He has been suspended a couple times but don't believe he has a reputation as someone who routinely crosses the line. Plenty of relatively clean players have taken cheap shots without it being common practice.
Kind of odd to hold such a grudge based on a Tweet (if it being the case). Every fanbase has insufferable trolls on Twitter. It is a cesspool.
