If I’m GoldyShuffle y’all would annoy the F out of me. Maybe he can just DM me again in the future instead.

can you DM the news too? I appreciate what was posted but I am only 1 person

Those of us who are fussy about hearing vague negative info may be in the minority too.

Or just do what I did. I looked at Goldy Shuffle's post, shrugged my shoulders and went about my day knowing that if news was forthcoming, I'd hear about it in due time. Did he add anything of value? No. Did he spread disinformation and do harm? Also no. Fretting about what an anonymous poster says on a message board is a losing strategy.

I was worrying about the team, not the poster.  Not going to even address the needless snark in your post.

Ha!! I completely forgot about that. Probably because we met at the Final Five and I was about 11 whiskey's deep at that point. Having my face and contact info on the GPL podcast page doesn't give me much anonymity anyway.

So I believe this has been asked and answered before but what happens if May the 1st passes and guys that are in the portal aren’t picked up by another team? Am I correct in thinking that they can come back to the Gophers if that works for both parties?

May 1 is just the deadline to get into the portal. Sure they could re negotiate a scholarship but I reckon those bridges are most of the time burned.

I guess that for me the bigger worry is Connor Kurth leaving.  If it is Broz-Lucious I-Lucious II, then ok.  Lots of talent but that can be made up easily by bringing back Walker or finding our own impact transfer portal pick up (over the short run could be even better).  But I think Kurth might be one of the best college players 3 years from now.

While it is their own opinion that matters, it is almost sad to see some of these players leave before they are ready.  Ben Meyers is a fringe NHL player.  Kyle Rau is a fringe NHL player.  Sampo Ranta is a fringe NHL player.  Chaz Lucious was less prepared than any of them to step into the NHL right now.  Perhaps I am wrong, there are players that must get better in the NHL like Justin Holl, but I see a path of AHL with some call ups to AHL sinking to ECHL then foreign leagues.

Not that I’d mind a bonus podcast, but there isn’t really enough to discuss yet. This is, so far, rather typical offseason stuff.

As of now we've got 4 forwards in the portal and 2 that have turned pro. That's half of our forward crew. I sure hope that this isn't our typical offseason.

.

Why are we worried about Connor Kurth de-commiting? He has a clear path to a Top 6 role and the recent departures just make it more likely he is playing on the wing next to a talented center.

I think you have to ask yourself during the recruiting process what does a player (and the people around him) have a history of doing. What’s his personality? Does he seem to need special treatment? What are the circumstances around him? And so on. If you sign a kid up that has bounced around, had circumstances that show that he needs special treatment, etc… then you can’t be surprised if he bails if circumstances aren’t exactly the way he wants. The player that I think of is Jim O’Brien. He was known as a bit of an odd kid, bounced around a lot prior to college, etc. He abruptly bailed on the program late in the summer for the WHL (and he wasn’t forthright about any of it). On one hand, I felt bad for Lucia and the program at the time… but I also felt like the coach put himself in a bad spot by ignoring the player’s past. I realize a coach can’t be perfect with these things but I do think you can lower your risk by paying close attention to the patterns

Jim O’Brien. Pretty good analogy.

Jim O'Brien, that's going back a few years.

They're trying to make these movement rules permanent and even allow multiple transfers over a regular college career. Feels like this is the new normal.

Six or seven forwards that were expected to be on the roster as of 4/1 not being there will be on the high end.

Knies-Cooley-Snuggerud Pitlick-Huglen-Kurth Pinoniemi-Nelson-Brodzinski Strobel-Nevers-Schmidt This is where we’re at as of today. No doubt we’ll add two or more forwards as Mittelstadt is the only extra now. As I said earlier I’d be more worried if we didn’t have a STUD d group back there.

Pinoniemi is the X factor. He missed all of the 2nd half of the season and there has been no info anywhere that I could find on the injury. As popular as the Stampede are in this area, the local news and paper really only cver the games, and not much else. He wasn’t at the Stampede season ending get together they put on for the STH’s. I realize he didn’t play since Jan, but he did play for the team for 3 years, so I was hoping that he would have been there. Players who are coming off injuries are normally slow starters the following year or are slowly worked back in the lineup, so he concerns me. If all else fails, just move one of the extra defensemen up to forward ( I’m kidding )

Pino draws a lot of comparisons to Huglen imo. Hyped up in high school. Had an overall good juniors career riddled with injuries causing him to fall off peoples radars. I’d say give him the first half of the year to get acclimated to the college game just like Huglen and you got a helluva hockey player once he finds himself.

I’m not gonna go count but that seems a bit high. And you’re making assumptions on some situations to get there. How many did Michigan have? Teams with more next level talent are gonna have to deal with this every year now as players maneuver to put themselves in the best situation for their career. It’s gonna be like this going forward. Imagine if NIL started getting factored in.

In fact it seems weird that we’ve remained almost static at D and G.

Meyers/Beniers/Johnson/Brisson/Bordeleau would not count because the staffs knew as of 4/1 they were gonna be gone.

Pretty late to steal recruits but Charlie Stramel would have to be near top of wish list. Not sure what excites him about next years Wisconsin team….

Think he's talking about to come in this fall.

Spicer and Moldenhauer are available to come in without any stealing needed.

The timing is brutal from these guys. At the absolute end of the portal window, really? Gophers could have snagged a goalie and had more chance to find top 9 forward replacements.

I mean… did people expect Boynton to stay?  We brought a goalie in early and exclusively went to our practice goalie. This is the least surprising thing.

The fact that Boynton appeared to be healthy all season, yet never got any ice time at all definitely puts that into the "can't say I'm surprised" category.

BAH.  You're right. Serves me right posting before I actually get done working for the day.

Was he still having problems later in the year?  Seems odd that he never got any playing time at all after returning.

To be fair we probably weren't going to replace him with a top goalie no matter when he left.

Does anyone blame these kids for leaving when your " All universe captain goalie " leaves mid-season for a cup of coffee with the hurricanes. Walker Meyers Mclaughlin prolly had the locker room or what was left of it after Laughontaine. How could we trust anybody who used to wear a Michigan sweater anyways. Admired the way Close came in and saved a ff run but they were cooked when trader jack showed his true colors. Hope you put most of your money away.

Bonin21, you worry too much. I'm confident that Bob saw Boynton leaving especially since us GPLers saw it coming. Maybe there is a goalie playing in Canada that he will bring in that isn't on our radar, like when he brought in Laffer. The forwards replacements will be more of a challenge, but I have faith it will all work out.

Does anyone blame these kids for leaving when your ” All universe captain goalie ” leaves mid-season for a cup of coffee with the hurricanes.

Alrighty then
