Well the lot that wanted a split should be happy. 😉
Watching that celebration you'd think they won the national championship... ?
I was thinking the same thing lol
I am happy with a split up north.
And, with Floyd back in MN… weekend is coming up roses.

It's that or leave the arena and realize you're still in grandforsaken forks.

ditto. Good weekend for gopher teams. Thrilled with 2/3
Nobody’s pining for a road split, it’s simply a reasonable expectation vs a quality opponent in a rivalry series. The Gophers clearly have plenty to be happy about, Close is playing with enhanced confidence, Rinzel & Moore are impressive freshmen & Snuggy is lighting the lamp & Lamb is off to a good start & Nelson scored tonight. Need to get Huglen, Pitlick & Brodz going. Blue line is solid, but not the equivalent of last years veteran, star studded group, that’s not a rip, simply a fact…getting Koster back will help (hopefully soon)Well the lot that wanted a split should be happy. 😉
What a fun and entertaining weekend of hockey and man, I know it’s cliche but this rivalry very, very rarely disappoints. The only thing I’m really disappointed with is the same as last year. We knew North Dakota was going to come out firing after losing last night and we couldn’t quite get it done. That, and just too many penalties. Hard to get any real momentum when you spend so much time on the PK. But a lot of positives to take going forward and it’s hard to be mad about going into the Ralph missing two key senior players and not only getting a split but playing well for much of the weekend. Plus, even though I’m a hockey-before-everything-else kind of fan, it helps that the football finally beat Iowa, IN IOWA, and is bringing the pig back home. But back to hockey, some things to clean up but so far the team keeps getting better and better. Plenty to look be excited about going forward.

Am I happy about a split? No. Am I content with a split? Yes.
Now, let the Bills beat the Pats tomorrow, and of course have the Vikes somehow beat the Niners so all of you are happy, and it'll be a good sports weekend.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
Go Niners! The Vikings need a legit draft position and can't afford any more stupid wins after beating Chicago.
The jump from Week 1 to week 2 for this team was noticeable. A handful of underclassmen played like vets.

Agreed the Vikes need to lose a lot this year. Top end pick and get rid of the old overpaid guys.
And a split on the road is not perfect obviously but is just fine.

I cannot believe how good Rinzel is, already playing like he's Jr.

Twice the officials put the wrong player in the box. They corrected the 7-77 mistake, but it was Chesley not Snuggie the second time.
Note: Due to inflation dirty deeds will no longer be done dirt cheap.
To be fair, neither were actual penalties. If you're going to make up penalties, I don't see why you can't make up who committed themTwice the officials put the wrong player in the box. They corrected the 7-77 mistake, but it was Chesley not Snuggie the second time.
Agreed.
Too. Many. Penalties.
Sure, the PK is still perfect, but we could not generate any consistency being short handed so many times. Plus, if you noticed, we really struggled with getting our lines back together after the penalties.

When the same guy draws 3 (4?) penalties...you might want to take a close look. They did NOT call a hook on the one play, but...

Most of us picked a split and that's exactly what we got. North Dakota over celebrated, because they know they beat a team better than themselves. Outside of a couple of questionable penalties called on the Gophers it was an entertaining series.
Wow! Minny is absolutely stacked this year. After last night I wasn't sure the UND could compete with them. Sioux had to really raise their effort to get the win tonight. Close was on his head all weekend; definitely the best player of the series. Typical rivalry series with the split, hope to get a chance to play the Gophs again.

I think what disappointed me the most was how we played the first two and a half periods today after what we saw yesterday.
I was hoping for the sweep. That being said there is still a lot of learning experiences to be had for this team. It is early in the season, learn those lessons now.
While it doesn’t discount our play tonight, the refs making up penalties and not even putting the right player in the box more than once was not a good look.
series over, moving on.
Better dead than red!
Chesley was a turnover machine...oof. It felt like the Gophers never really punched back tonight.
That was pretty much a formula weekend. They got their guaranteed split last night and never matched the energy tonight of a team that needed a win.
**Justen Close appreciation post**
IMO, the MVP of the series no question! So many quality, timely saves that kept the team in it at times when things got a bit crazy or momentum started to tilt. Hats off to him!
I’d be more disappointed if the penalty differential today wasn’t 6-2 and we lost 2-1 in a game where our goalie let in a bad goal (Close was great this whole weekend and I’m not blaming him for tonight’s outcome) which got us a split on the weekend… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Idk if it was the chicken or the egg but the team had zero puck possession most the game and the penalty differential partly explains it. Whatever you think of the penalties against the gophers (some calls were bad but they let Fish’s hook go which would’ve been a 5x3) they were chasing the puck the entire night and it was difficult to watch. They just didn’t have the same puck control where they were strong on their sticks like the night before and when the penalty differential is that high it’s gonna be an uphill battle.
I also think back to the first few mins where we hit their goalie in the chest while he was sprawled out on his side and the entire net was wide open. In a close game like that anything can happen.
I think Close would like that second goal back.
Agreed but he made more than a few saves that made up for it. Whatever just gotta hope the team learns from this one and keeps improving, the game was ugly but with how the team looks and how the big ten is doing in conference play they appear to be in good shape. Just gotta handle business against the popcorn box and then Duluth weekend should be interesting (going to both games and looking forward to it).
Yeah that 2nd goal was a leaker but Close is not the reason we lost. We lost because we were watching and chasing the puck most of the game and not moving our feet, which leads to dumb stick penalties. Close was outstanding all weekend.
Sounds like Rud went off with an injury in the 1st period, anyone know any details?
2 legit Frozen Four teams. The Gophers will get healthy improve every week and be fine. Go Gophers!!
@suedescar yes I agree. When the director of officials and two on ice are UND alums not surprising.

Blake does absolutely no favors to himself by falling down like he's been shot any time a guy is in his vicinity.
The refs were a horror show last night, couldn't even get jersey numbers right, let alone calls.
But it's whatever. Gophers without Koster and Nevers were clearly the better of the two teams this weekend, they just let game 2 get away from them. That's a symptom of early season scaries for hockey teams in general, and also the inexperienced members of the team being put into more key roles as injuries take a hold.
Who exactly was "screaming" about the sky falling?
To circle back on this too, the conversation going into this weekend was dominated by Gopher fans saying "Man it'll be lucky if we make it out with a split," hell people put a fork in the Gophers' season after the Friday against St Thomas man.
For any two teams in the top 20, college hockey is set up for splits, especially if the road team wins on Friday night. This psychology plays out every year. Teams that win 8-0 on Friday lose 1-2 the next night.
Hockey is a funny sport like that. A team that commits to keeping the puck out of its own net can beat a better team...Q won a championship doing that.

you could even say "Close was outstanding while his teammates were out standing"

More effort than psychology. When one team is pissed off they try harder the next night. When both teams are good that usually means it ends up a split.
When one team is much better, the second night can also be closer but the losing team is not good enough to win even with a better effort.
Gopher D got tired because the top 4 played a ton the whole weekend.
Last season Minnesota split 4/7 series on the road. The year before was the same. 4/5, 5/7 (including getting swept), 2/6 including two time getting swept, 1/7 including getting swept five times, in the years that followed.
Also important to note that two of the injuries headed into the weekend were Koster and Chesley. For a team who lost Johnson, Faber, and LaCombe from their D corps over the summer, to also lose Koster and Chesley to injury leaves the defense very thin on experience. I was pessimistic about the Gophers’ chance of going into Grand Forks and pulling out a win.
He meant when Chesley was going to be out many thought a split would be tough. Which would have very likely been true.

Exactly. I think the majority of the posts on the first page were made when Chesley was doubtful for the series.
I think all of us were disappointed to lose and play like garbage on Saturday after what we did Friday.
What this boils down to is "Gopher fans in disarray!!!!11!!1".
NEXT! DOWN WITH BUCKY

Gotcha
@suedescar yes I agree. When the director of officials and two on ice are UND alums not surprising.
In the old WCHA, if you excluded officials who were alumni of WCHA programs... you wouldn't have very many guys left on the ice. In fact 7-8 former WCHA players went on to officiate WCHA games.
Matt Tyree played at Mankato and is still regularly a linesman for their games. Jacob Brenk played at Mankato, then worked one season in the WCHA (before taking route to NHL). Justin Brown played at Michigan Tech, officiated some of their games. Brandon Polich played at CC, officiated some of their games. And that is just a small number of the guys in the recent past. Marco Hunt (former WCHA, NCHC, and B1G official), director of officiating for CCHA, played at Bemidji State.
Type in officials names into LinkedIn and you'll see that almost all of the graduated from a school with a hockey program, and will often work their games. A lot of the guys officiate college hockey because they love college hockey, and often went to schools with hockey programs because they loved college hockey.
Officiating Division I hockey does not pay enough to have people travel regularly (linesman almost never fly in most leagues, I believe the B1G is an exception). You start excluding those guys, you're going to end up lowering your pool of officials even more than it already is.
Being a Minnesota alumni myself, I was thrilled when I finally got my first series at Mariucci. Being able to work a Bulldog/Gopher series was awesome having attended both schools. However I loved having the opportunity to officiate at the D1 level more than I loved Gopher Hockey (sorry to disappoint). And ultimately, once you go on the ice you realize you have a job to do and turn off your inner hockey fan. If an official is actually biased, the coaches (who give feedback every game) are going to get them out of there quickly.
I didn't watch the games and am not going to comment on any calls/non-calls. But just be careful what you wish for if you want to start excluding officials who attended prominent hockey schools. I believe NCAA Rules prohibit you from officiating any NCAA Tournament games for a school that you attended, worked for, donated to, have relatives that work for, etc. But I am not aware of any rules like that for regular season contents.
The only thing that was bad about officiating this weekend was the way the ref announced penalties. ” Minnesota........77......... Two minutes....... For.... tripping".
I think the complaint is when on-ice officials are alums of a team on the ice.
Yes, given the regionality of college hockey, it gets hard to exclude potential rivals of a particular team from being officials in all games, but, if any officials are alums of one of the teams in THAT game, that seems like a problem (I have no idea if all or any of the 4 on-ice officials or any of the off-ice replay/supervisory/whatever crew were alums of UM or UND)
B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?
How many D1 level officials live near Grand Forks that didn’t go to school there? That’s the problem. It’s frequent for school alumni to live in the area near where they attended school, so your pool of qualified refs is small to nil when you exclude the alumni. Who the hell would live near Grand Forks on purpose? Only those who got suckered to play hockey there.I think the complaint is when on-ice officials are alums of a team on the ice.

I still didn't buy into "lucky for a split" prediction even when it was still expected that Chesley would be out. Yes the Gophers lost a lot talent in the off-season, but it's not as if what they returned plus added was chopped liver. A lot of people pegged them as the NC contenders at one point, and subtracting Cooley, Koster and Chesley shouldn't just drop them all the way down to "I don't even think we can split on the road against a team one-third filled with players from the portal".
