Remember a couple years ago when a few around here wanted us all to believe Close was not a great goaltender?
I'll admit when Laffer left, I was really down on the Gophers' chances the rest of that season. Before Boston, I was already a believer in the Closer, and nothing since has come close to changing my mind.Remember a couple years ago when a few around here wanted us all to believe Close was not a great goaltender?
B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?
CHN says Brodz got the EN not Pitlick.
soooo….
Brodz sucks.

Pitlick is an unsung hero on this team. Play maker. He hustles every shift and moves the puck knowing where he wants to go.
First period wasn't the best, but Close kept them in it.
Then the second period started, and the Gophers just pulled away.

Impressed how the gophers took and never relinquished the momentum. Nice job staying on pucks and being hard to play against all the way until the end.
Closer really made some saves look easy by being square and tracking pucks so cleanly. Very solid game in net…. Thought Thomas had a great game as well.
it’ll be a fun rematch.
big win boys!
Closer IS that guy
Anybody ever see a replay of the Snuggy shot? Live it looked very in but I’d be interested to see how close
The 1st period was as advertised, although MN got outplayed. Then you could see them pull away a little bit at a time, until oops, it's 4-0.

Lamb Snuggy Moore line with another 6 point outing

Yeah, he’s been a menace on the PK as well. Gophers have a lot of players who can really skate.
Was about to post the same thing, he’s gotta get a couple 13-14 shortys this year too

I went back and looked and it was off the post
Other than one off the post Close had one of the most effortless looking SO I’ve seen, but that’s cause he made it look easy. I don’t think any of us was expecting a SO tonight but we played well in our own end. On the opposite end, ND D looked rough, we could have easily had twice as many goals with all the juicy chances they coughed up.
In 3 games Snuggy has 5 goals and 2 assists, Lamb has 4 goals and 2 assists, Moore has 1 goal and 5 assists couple this with back to back shut outs were they only allowed 24 and 25 shots makes me think the two worries people had for this season (a drop off in first line scoring and the defense) aren't things to worry about.
Yes Cooley, Knies, Faber, LaCombe, and Johnson were/are great player but the Gophers just keep reloading. This team is as talented and probaly more talented then anybody in the nation. They just shut down No Dak with out two of their best players. Will Koster and Nevers even get their spots back? ?

That makes sense none of us had any clue how it would turn out . There was people going into last year though still acting like he was a product of the guys in front of him and he was just alright. That is ludicrous!
The Closer with back to back shut outs!!! 11th of his career in just over a year and a half.
Another good warm up game for the Gophers!
Baring the traditional UNoDak "goon show," I don't see any reason - none at all - why he can't close it out with another shut out tomorrow evening.
Go Gophers!
Not knowing what to do, they do what they know . . .
Knowing what to do, they sometime don't do it . . .
The 26th year of the Gopher Men's Hockey Profile got to be too much for this ol' codger to handle . . . what with all of the possible activity on the transfer portal . . . . So, I'm closing it down at the 25th year . . .
B1G is off to a good start for inter conference records. Without looking at all of the match-ups, it also looks like the B1G is playing against better teams than the NCHC is.

They just showed the one angle live, but reviewing it on my PVR, it definitely looks like it was all pipe. It was at 10:51 left in the 3rd if anyone wants to do the same.

I have to say, the video on ch 9 was as good as I've ever seen. Crystal clear, good camera angles, no glare.
With how well the D and Close played I can’t say I was stressed out much during that game. I think they hit two pipes (couldn’t tell if that one where Snuggy tried to block a shot hit the pipe, it looked like it might’ve) but the gophers had three breakaways on top of all their other chances. On the road in a hostile environment you can’t ask for my big more.
Hopefully we see more of the same tomorrow.
Impressive defensive clinic from a young D unit. Would love to know the time on ice for the D, cough cough Veegs. Especially guys like Mittelstadt, Chesley, Thomas, Rinzel

First time up here in grand forks. Great first game to be at!
@gophers2023 The announcers were pretty good actually
They were surprisingly professional and not homers. They were so effusively complementary of our boys that I wouldn’t be surprised if it pissed off their fans. Even the UND coach was pretty deferential in his post game interview.
The production overall was well done.
Minus the constant ads popping up, everything was well done. Announcers gave credit where credit was due, the in-between period highlights of the rivalry showed the good and the bad for both teams, they really kissed The Closer's arse. Not a complaint from this guy.

Nice road win tonight. The Gophers survived the early storm by the home team and then turned it up. After getting the lead there was no let up. Even in the third when ND got a couple PPs they didn’t bend.
Time to sweep the leg!
Great road game played by the Gophers. They withstood the initial wave then started to take control as the game went along.
Awesome to see Closer get the shutout. Sweep time!
I don't want to be a guy to say I told ya so but...
I told ya so.
Way too many people were screaming about the sky falling. This team is good and deep. This was a good showing of that. Two of your key Seniors out for a series in Grand Forks and you pitch a shut out.
Sure it wasn't perfect, and Close had to make some tough saves, but that's just a symptom of playing another good hockey team.
It ain't a sweep yet. Just saying.

Great game tonight. As phrased on the SS website, they gave us a Snuggy to add insult to injury haha. It would be really nice to get a sweep tomorrow night. Go Gophers!!
Very pleased with the way the Gophers played. NoDak carried the first but the Gophers didn’t panic or put themselves in bad situations. Reset in the second and played some really solid hockey for the final 60. I’m looking forward to watching them continue to improve. Can’t wait for tomorrow night!
BREAKING -
I’m told und will be wearing their new jersey in the series finale..
Of course, but even if they play the most embarrassing game ever tomorrow they walk out with a road split vs a quality non conference team. Tough not to be excited about what we saw and the possibility tomorrow. It ain't a sweep yet. Just saying.
Minnesota had the big-game jitters to start but from the middle of the first period on, they gave UND almost nothing. That's the perfect road win right there. Get the lead and play hard to keep the puck out of your net.
UND might be a bit over-rated at this point, but tight D and good goaltending got the job done in workmanlike fashion for the Gophers.
UND's goalie is good. Despite the goals he gave up, he was very sharp, and will get UND more than a few wins this season.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
I tried to warn you.
btw has UND gone back to the portal yet?
The thing i liked is that Gophers played aggressively in the neutral zone and in our defensive zone in the 2nd and 3rd period. We didn't sag and play passively. What an improvement from game 1 vs St Thomas. We really made ND look so ineffective.
24,11,7, 17, 77 and 1 were standouts tonight.
But our Defense! Think we can put those concerns to bed after tonight. North Dakota will come hard tomorrow but I like the Gophers chances.

They are playing with house money...no matter the outcome tomorrow they got what they needed from the weekend.
