The other thing would be that he could let the coyotes tank for another year and get a better pick, though that’ll prob be the case no matter what he chooses to do because that org acts like it’s just a money laundering front.
I guess I will never get this. We want every player to play against older, better competition with more games before coming to the Gophers because that will better prepare them. However, it is always a terrible decision for our players to leave early to play against older, better competition with more games to prepare for the NHL level. Plus they get $900,000. I can see staying in college if you like it and it is fun and you get to be a college student but to purely prepare for the next level it seems like all hockey all the time better prepares you than 34 to 40 games over six months.
Mods, can you do something about this poster who thinks a player could develop better at somewhere other than the U??

@ddillon22 I think most fans seem to be under the belief that high end players should spend 2 years at the U before they are ready for the NHL. There may be rare exceptions, and Cooley is on the borderline of that. I can't remember all of the recent 1 and dones, but Casey Mittelstadt, Leddy, Kessel and Erik Johnson come to mind. I would argue that Mittelstadt and Leddy should have stayed 1 more year. I am fine if Cooley decides to go, but think 1 more year would be beneficial. I also have zero problems when players leave after year 3. I also believe in Lucia's philosophy that if you can't play in the NHL right away, why not take advantage of all of the first class facilities that the Gophers provide that will get you closer to the NHL and a degree. But, I also understand that money is a factor and being 1 year closer to that 2nd and 3rd NHL contract may be important and school is not for everyone. The only time I ever get upset with a player leaving is when they leave a month before the season starts or in the middle of the season.

Hard to say that Leddy should have stayed another year. Left the U and joined the AHL immediately. Played the following year with the Big club for 82 games and 48 games with the big club the year after that. Not sure another year of college changes that.
As an aside, Leddy has played in 929 NHL games and has taken a grand total of 187 PIMs. That's pretty amazing if you ask me.
That 2nd year with the big club also got Leddy's name on the Stanley Cup, so you are correct, I think he made the right decision! He has also made nearly $70 million in contracts alone, so leaving early did not hurt him one bit.
Bobby Brink should have played his covid year with the Gophers. ? ?

The later this goes (Brodzinski, Nelson, Cooley) you’d have to think our chances of them returning go up.
I have to believe this because if they all go it’s real late to scramble.

the only one who really may be left scrambling would be Motzko. Whether Cooley goes now or later won’t really impact him personally, though you’d envision if the Yotes want (and Cooley) him in, they’d be doing so now to get him with their trainers. For the other2, it may be more due to not having a ton of offers or saying the idea would be to come back and win one at home for their state. Would envision its the latter for them

I guess my point is I would hope these guys wouldn’t do that to the program.
Lucius (x2) and Broz were late last year but these circumstances are very different.
I don't think any of these are the type to "do it" to the program, but there are a lot of moving parts involved when kids are facing such a serious decision, and it's not even summer yet.
One of the Coyotes beat writers, Craig Morgan, had a Q & A column today. He was asked 3 times about Logan Cooley. 1 fan speculated he was waiting for the results of the arena vote, 1 fan speculated he was waiting until he sees where and who the Coyotes draft and one just asked for a timeline. Craig's response to all three was.
I don’t know, but the last thing that I was told is that there is no real timeline on a decision. I am not privy to more details on the process or why that timeline changed from what I heard originally.

I second that
I know I’m in the minority here but I’m watching the Nelson, Brodzinski decisions closer than Cooley. Returning the entire 2, 3, 4 lines would be awesome. Moore can more or less replace Cooley’s scoring. Obviously it would be sweet to have Moore AND Cooley though.

Those two and Jimmy S would make a nice trio.

I have faith in one of those graphics more than the other three based on what I've been told... but nothing is set in stone until contracts or NLIs are signed.
I would say that I'd recommend some folks investigate Dinkytown Athletes and pick hockey as their allocation if they're looking to take an active role. There are a couple situations that would be more likely with NIL support to keep kids in school for another year. I'd also expect a match campaign for DA to happen here at some point.
Close the most likely to come back? Or Cooley? Spill the beans ?

You're killing me Veegs! Any hints? Sounds like, rhymes with, how many letters in their name, anything! I'm starting to feel like a teenager waiting on the results of a pregnancy test.
@eric-vegoe I went to the Dinkytown Athletes site and there are no Gopher Hockey players or Gopher Hockey team tab to choose from. Are they not involved in that yet and are they going to be in the future?

They haven't officially signed the paperwork with any players yet to use their images on the site. I think you'll see that happen in the next couple weeks though.

Coach Motzko has more than earned our trust. But Vegoe’s post has my mind racing. If we lose Cooley/Brodzinski/Nelson what do you think the plan is and what is your guess on the lines? I think D is set. Airey if close leaves.
Mine with little to no information on feasibility regarding eligibility of the younger folks:
LW/C/RW
1) Pitlick/O. Moore/Snuggerud
2) Eiserman/Nevers/Kurth
3) Hendrickson/Huglen/Lamb
4)Strobel/Pinoniemi/Mittlestadt
Backup: Jimmy Clark

I don’t think Eiserman is coming in as of now.
We really have to wait on decisions before projecting because there are so many moving parts. It’s still fairly likely we return 3/4 or even 4/4.
The goalie situation is fairly cut and dry. If Close returns, Bartoskziewicz (likely) hits the portal and they bring in Airey. If Close leaves then Airey and Barto likely split time.
I find it unlikely all 3 of Cooley, Nelson, Brodzinski sign but in that “doomsday” scenario (that’s hyperbole it really wouldn’t be that bad) we’re still sitting pretty with the mix of returners and newcomers. It just means we’ll have to do some menial portal digging.
They sure are keeping us in suspense. I understand though, it’s a big decision.
Nothing against Brodzinski (I would really like him back), but would he do anything other than play in ECHL? Seems like it’s a clear cut decision for him to return unless he is just ready to move on in life, which is totally understandable.
I hope both him and Nelson realize they aren’t exactly going to step into NHL lineups. It’s likely a year of AHL bus rides for both of them. I get the moving on angle if they don’t wanna be the old guys in a room full of kids. I can kind of understand that at least (they both were brought in young so they’d only be like 23. Not exactly Mankato age…). I sure hope they stay.
I do truly think it’s a “best for both parties” situation. Nelson and Brodzinski could both use an extra year if they’re serious about making it in the NHL, which I take it they are.
All we need is the 2400 active GPLers to sign up for the “Varsity” on Dinkytown Athletes @$275/yr, select Men’s hockey. We then beat the ECHL salary for the top 2 lines and are close to the AHL average. Who’s coming with me?

I will definitely be signing up.
I plan to join Dinkytown athletes.
Same.

Me re-reading Vegoe’s response to see if he left a clue or hint as to which player he’s referring to…
How is the money used that one pays to Dinkytown athletes?
How is the money used that one pays to Dinkytown athletes?
85% to funding athlete’s opportunities and 15% to administrative costs.

I just looked through the site. Just my opinion, I don’t like the 2 women b-ball players who’ve made their bio page look like OnlyFans!! Ones in a super short mini dress (holding a basketball??) ones in daisy duke cut offs.
Note: Due to inflation dirty deeds will no longer be done dirt cheap.

Athlete opportunities…does that mean things like bus trips to eveleth as a team, or do players individually get money for NIL things?
@kelly-red - I have not looked at it but that sounds unforntunate. Sadly, that’s still the content that generates clicks and $.
Why can’t college athletes just be such - kids going to college? It’s too much like pro sports now. Try to rake in the bucks with endorsement deals, and if you don’t like your playing time, just become a free agent. ?
Pretty hard for men's hockey to compete with that. How is the money used that one pays to Dinkytown athletes?

The player signs an agreement to have their NIL used by DA and then they have done exclusive interviews with players, parents, 'day in the life' type things and podcast appearances. They've also gone out to spend sponsored time with charities or youth groups. My understanding is that they don't just hand out money to them, but if they are interested then they can get it by completing opportunities. The sports that get funded are defined by the donor and the specific allocation of funds is at the discretion of the Dinkytown Athletes.

The University will still do things like bus trips to eveleth as a team, groups to schools, gophers in the community and players visiting hospitals, but this is happening nationally and this is the reponses.
