The Gophers in 10 of their last 11 games have been perfect on the penalty kill or didn't take a penalty. Over that span they are 22 of 24 killing penalties which is 92%.
Yeah that's quite the turnaround since they're at 80% for the season. Good to see.
They definitely had three straight bad games on the penalty kill (two against No Dak and the first game against Ohio State) where they gave up goals on 5 of 8 chances which kills your percentage. Thankfully the 11 game stretch mentioned above has followed those three games.
This might be heresy, but I think I'd like to see Knies on a different line at some point.
I think he's one of the best forwards in college hockey, but he gets a bit overshadowed by his linemates who clearly have great chemistry with each other.
Put kurth or pitlick or lamb up with Cooley / snuggerud and put Knies with huglen. I'd think huglen might be able to get going offensively with Knies on his line. Seems like he's on an island a fair amount.
I think its a great idea to at least give it a look. Like @Snowcool08 said, Knies will get a few games away from 92/81 with the WJC coming up. Play Knies with Huglen then and see if there's anything there.
Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I am under the impression everyone will be back and ready to go for the Saturday (01/07/23) game @St. Cloud?
The gold medal game is on Thursday (01/05/2023) night. I would hope that gives them plenty of time to get back if they make it that far.
IF this is correct, they will only miss two exhibition games (US-NTDP and Bemidji) that mean nothing anyways.
If the Axe doesn’t make an appearance that’ll be a giant miss. I’m not saying we have to obnoxiously have it out the entire weekend and completely over do it. But, especially if we’re sweeping them, bring that trophy out and really get the crowd going.
If it's done tastefully, it might work. However it's done, it should respect that, unlike the rest of the B1G, we're there to watch hockey, not just whichever Gopher teams that are doing well.

Crossover hype between different sports is never a bad thing and is certainly nothing new. I agree that it should not be "overdone" whatever that means, but promoting a community of students and athletes is fantastic imho.
Once Kurth gets going this team will really be a dangerous squad. I still think he’ll hit the 10 goal mark and he’s been sitting at 3 since the North Dakota series. Once he gets going I don’t think he’ll stop for another 3 years.
They're dangerous already, but I get what you're saying. I'd throw Lamb in there, too. He came in with a lot of fanfare for his scoring ability. I think both of those players have a high ceiling but find themselves down the lineup on a loaded team with depth.
Lamb came in a year too early and most of his fanfare for his scoring ability was from when he was facing really bad high school competition. I think he could turn into a pretty solid player but it could be a while. Kurth as well, his skating is pretty brutal which is why the NHL wasn't overly interested in him despite his crazy USHL numbers.
The Gophers lost a lot of players. I prefer Lamb and Kurth both over 5th year guys. Lamb scored 10 goals in the state tournament. In MN that's great in any class. He does have a very good shot and will hit another gear in the 2nd half this year. Go Gophers!
I think part of the issues with Lamb, Kurth and maybe Pino is they are used to playing significant roles on their teams. With the Gophers so deep, they are pushed down to lower lines and they just don't get the same high grade opportunities that they had in the past. Hopefully something clicks for them later this year, but I certainly expect them to play bigger roles on this team as they get used to college hockey. Look at a couple of guys that left after last year. Broz and Cruikshank were in similar roles last year with a lot of talent above them.

Don't get me wrong; as someone who's had his picture taken with the Axe at a baseball game during the 2019 "Rubbing It In" tour, I do appreciate crossover. All I'm saying is that it shouldn't take over the weekend.
Though to be fair, Rau4 was only suggesting using it to celebrate a sweep, at which point it doesn't really matter and my opinion is colored by an incident several years ago when Wisco tried to use the Axe as a rally prop at the Kohl Center and it backfired spectacularly.

Lol exactly! If/when we bring it out we have to be very careful how we go about it. Amusing for sure but not worth egg on our face if it somehow backfires.

It is hard to predict what specific moments will rise to the top. likely there wasn't 1 moment that will endure the test of time last year, but I will never forget last year's 5-0 & 8-0 Sweep to clinch the big ten title. It has been a few years since there's been a worthy addition, we're overdue.Hope we can add another great clip to the repertoire!
I can confirm the Students were having a blast that weekend. I witnessed one young fan who didn't make it thru the first 5 min due to a few too many pre-game drinks, LOL.
If there is one moment that sticks out from that series last February it’s the few minute span on Saturday night of first Wisconsin scoring but it being overturned. Then they announced over the PA system that Notre Dame had beaten Michigan and the Gophers had officially won the B1G. Finally we scored two goals one right after another. All of that together within just a couple of minutes really made for a pretty raucous celebration when that second goal went. Obviously not nearly as distinctive on an individual level as the videos shared above but still a moment that I won’t soon forget.

I was at the Saturday night game that weekend. It was a blast.
Definitely a good example where each game, and the weekend as a whole, were amazing, but no real single-play highlight to grab.It is hard to predict what specific moments will rise to the top. likely there wasn't 1 moment that will endure the test of time last year, but I will never forget last year's 5-0 & 8-0 Sweep to clinch the big ten title.
B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?
Good. The consensus is we are due for some Gopher highlight reel goals this weekend!!

We will be there. Working up a few goal tender questions to throw out.
@cowgirl I will do a recap, but it will have to wait until after the game because of the horrible wifi at the arena. Also, I will need my lap top because of my fat fingers typing on the phone isn't great. ? It is pretty uneventful as far as breaking news, but we usually get a few nuggets.

Bob--
Someone (not Jess) asked Bob if he beats WI will he get an extension? Bob chuckled but didn't answer.
Happy how they played last weekend.
Strives to be a team that doesn't take penalties.
Was counting on 4 players to take a step up this year. Nevers and Nelson were 2 on the list, and they have.
Nevers is the brains on that line. Very intelligent player.
BADgers are playing with confidence
Knies is looking forward to the break.
Luke Mittelstadt has been an impact player
Talked about the players invited to World Junior Camp
Bob talked off camera about the Vikings game to reporters as he left the room for a few minutes.
** Bob was very talkative today. Seemed in a good mood.
Close was next--
Last weekend was a refection on how good the team can play.
Doesn't really keep in touch with Moe.
Fun to watch the 1st line.
Watches video to prepare for how opponents play
The Farm Kid was last--
Said they were dialed in that weekend.
Thought they were too loose in Arizona
Weird to be in Munn after they changed things around.
Talked about the chemistry of his line.
Nevers worked on his skating during the off season
We will be ready to go.
Went to the grocery store for the 1st time in a few weeks since they are home.
Cooks his meals with the beef and pork from the family farm.
Close came down for a week last summer to help on the farm.
I think Vegoe asked if it was like an episode of Yellowstone.

Can’t wait for this weekend… looking forward to some great Gopher hockey.

The part about Nelson cooking with beef from the family farm brings back memories. When I would come home from college for a weekend my mom would send back some our home grown ground beef and my roommates and I would have Hamburger Helper for a week.

do you know where to find the video? I do not see it on the rink live.
@cowgirl Just like last week, it appears they haven't posted it yet. They posted the women's availability from earlier today already. It should show up under the live tab on their YouTube page at some point. Not sure if Jess edits out the dead time between the players appearing or what is the hold up.

Watch the whole video. Even in between when Motzko and the player’s interviews. Between Bob talking about the Vikings and Frank telling old sports broadcast stories, it’s worth watching the whole half hour.
It is pretty uneventful as far as breaking news, but we usually get a few nuggets.
Hastings here in Mankato shared many nuggets Tuesday night at the Mavs donor gathering. He and his staff are less than happy with his players right now. Hasn't resorted to garbage can kicking yet though. ?

Was going to comment on this myself. The Saturday crowd looks promising.

Let’s go!! One of the best regular season weekends of the year!
Has to be 6 points this weekend I don’t wanna hear any “Wisconsins starting to play better” crap. Go Gophers!!!!〽️〽️

Completely agree! However I don’t think we’ll see a repeat of last year against Wisconsin at home. I think at least one game will be pretty close. Could get pretty chippy and I just hope the Gophers don’t get sucked into the emotions of the weekend and take dumb penalties. Otherwise I think we should be good. Six points and let’s continue to make a statement about who’s the best in the B1G. Go Gophers!

Are people putting too much stock in Wisconsin's win against Michigan last week? That is their only decent win on the season.
Their previous 4 games were wins, but against Lindenwood and Long Island University. Prior to that they were swept on consecutive weekends by Mich St (ass kickings) and PSU. They snuck in a sweep of a terrible UMD team in October and opened the season by getting swept by OSU and SCSU.
They have one legitimately good win this season. I am not saying they aren't capable of beating the Gophers, but it shouldn't happen. It would be embarrassing. The Gophers need to go out there and kick six kinds of ? out of the Badgers. Then they should all point at Cruz's parents and laugh.

I think the Gophers are more than capable of kicking the crap out of the Badgers. I just think that this team, for as talented as they are, still shows a little bit of inconsistency at times and I could see one night the Gophers not being 100% on their game and the Badgers taking advantage. I think we’ll see six points but I also think there could be one game this weekend that’s closer than it should be because of the reasons I mentioned above. Like a 5-2 win tonight with a ENG and it’s a one goal game through the first two periods. But then tomorrow night it’s complete and utter domination in a 4-0 or 5-0 win.
Can it just be puck drop already? I wasn’t able to make Penn St so it’s been over a month for me. A month interrupted by two games in sunny Arizona but still, nothing beats Mariucci!!
Predicting Chesley’s first Gopher goal at some point this weekend
My prediction is that a penalty will be called this weekend.

Yeah it’s been far too long to be away from Mariucci. Looking forward to some raucous crowds, good hockey, and hopefully two Gopher wins to send us into the holiday break feeling good.
Let's get it on!
