Should be another good series. PSU appears to be playing really well so far this season, and the Gophers have been showing a lot of skill and ability to deal with some defensive play that they've had problems with in the past.
As a reminder, this weekend is Thursday/Friday, both games at 7 CT

Eff Ballys!
Attendance doesn’t look great for Thursday’s game. In fact, it doesn’t look great for either game. Which is too bad because this will probably be one of the more exciting series at home this year and tickets are very cheap. You can get in the building for just $25. Unfortunately the athletic department will probably be entirely focused on the second to last home game of the year and will do little to no advertising for hockey this week.
I’m about to beat a dead horse but I just have to say once again, that it is a real shame that this program is still having attendance issues. Haven’t been outside the top 5 so far this year. Have a very fun and talented young team that are very exciting to watch. Yet a good chunk of the “fans” can’t be bothered to show up. What more do you need? Don’t give me “the old rivalries” BS because even the game against Mankato wasn’t full. I know I’m preaching to the choir here but it’s just too bad and I feel for the fans that actually do show up and more importantly the players.
*Side note: I know there are a lot of fans from all over the state and even the country who would be at Mariucci every night if they could but it’s just not feasible. I’m not talking about them. I’m talking about the people who live in the area but continually move the goalposts on what it will take for them to attend a game (even though they never actually will) and then seem all to happy to gleefully bash the program’s attendance issues from behind a keyboard.
Gophers back to #1 in the polls

Everyone was talking up Notre Dame when they came to town then we absolutely beat them at their own game.
Penn State is going to try to turn it into a track meet and they simply don’t have the horses to hang with us. Especially not on home ice. In terms of play style this is probably the weekend Cooley’s been waiting for.
Looking forward to another Gophers sweep. Penn State has most everyone back from last year, so it will be fun to watch. Go Gophers!

I agree... maybe I am drinking the kool-aid but I think this is a clean sweep.
I feel like the Gophers and Penn State play similar hockey, and we just have better players. Put home ice on top of that, I have my broom ready to go already ?

I am hoping they literally open up the Thursday game to any college student (for free) that wants to attend. Of course I have no idea how the logistics on that work, so I am pretty ignorant to the possibility of actually doing it.
One of the things I really like about this team is the way they battle to get the puck. A couple of examples were on Friday when the Farm Kid won the battle on the wall and hit Nevers in front. Of course the many Knies wins including the one that fed Snuggy on both of his goals on Friday. Also, Cooley stole the puck at center ice and sent Knies in on his breakaway that resulted in a penalty. Just impressive.

You’re going to be frustrated if you delude yourself into thinking that Gopher fans are going to be enthused about attending home games vs Penn State or Ohio State or even Notre Dame…the same way they get jacked to attend a series vs the hated Fning Hawks. And they’ll usually draw better at home vs Duluth, St Cloud & Mankato too. The BIG teams folks will attend home games in droves is limited to Wisconsin & Michigan. And the relative success of the Wild & especially having a superstar like Kaprisov draws away fans too. I’d look at the glass half full & be glad they drew so well this year vs North Dakota & they’ll draw a good size crowd when they host JBSU too. Yes, they have a good team this year & that matters, but Gopher fans always expect the team to be good…to really pack the place they’ll need to deliver in the postseason, not just get there.
For whatever reason, PSU has been the team on the calendar that has concerned me the most over the last 5 years. Whatever the talent level, Gadowsky always manages to get the team hyped up to play their absolute best for 60 minutes every night.
While the Gophers certainly have the talent edge (perceived or real), they are still making mental errors. ND wasn't able to capitalize on them, and I don't expect PSU to do the same. PSU can win a game or the series by outworking the Gophers and taking their usual relentless approach to the game.
I think the lions are gonna come in here with a bit of an ego and get humbled pretty quick. They’re receiving a bit of the national spotlight and I don’t think they know how to handle it like we do.
Not to mention they’re coming onto the big sheet with the nations best blue line. I think the gophers spread them out and make them look silly. Sweep is my prediction.
PSU gives us fits. They've now given good teams fits already this season. I think this is a tough weekend of hockey for us. A split wouldn't surprise me.
Unless PSU tries to match us in the skill game. Choke the life out of the game and potentially us. Run and gun... well... I wouldn't recommend.
Plus Penn State's coach reeks of smugness. He is also the king of trying to delay play after his team gets called for icing. Last year he did that multiple times by putting the wrong players on the ice after icings. Now that Mel is gone, he is my #1 hated coach in the B1G.
I'm 50% factual and 50% sarcastic. When you get to know me, you will know which is which.
Trying to get a group together for both this week. Should be a damn good series

They gave us fits when we weren’t that good. They gave one good team fits and it was at home. Pegula is a hard place to play I’ll give them that. If this series was in happy valley I’d probably call a split. But since they’re coming here and facing the best team they’ve played yet this year on the road on the Olympic ice I think they’ll be a little outmatched.

My son scored two free tickets and gave them to me to use ( an almost 80 year old on Medical Assistance ). The only person I could think of to join me at the game said that he wouldn't be able to attend. So, I asked my son if he wanted to go. Certain enough. Now if I can only find my maroon and gold Zoomies. If I coulld look at the old site's history, I would be able to tell you the last game I attended. I think it may have been after my appendicitus operation back in the Fall of 2017 . . . . Go Gophers!
Not knowing what to do, they do what they know . . .
Knowing what to do, they sometime don't do it . . .
The 26th year of the Gopher Men's Hockey Profile got to be too much for this ol' codger to handle . . . what with all of the possible activity on the transfer portal . . . . So, I'm closing it down at the 25th year . . .
FWIW the boys are 6-1 on home ice. The one loss was a bananas OT loss to North Dakota. Let’s keep the home ice advantage going. Get the student section packed, those who are at the game let’s get loud, and let’s play the Lions off the ice.
@rau4skiumah I wonder sometimes if these "fans" who whine about not playing north dakota/duluth/mankota etc were ever really fans in the first place. The main selling point for a gopher game are the gophers. after almost ten plus years of no wcha hockey, if you are not showing up to games, you are not a gopher fan. these people are deep down sioux fans.

This game is affordable so I might go to one of them, probably Friday.
Only thing I’ll say in defense of poor attendance is that Thursday Friday series are kinda tough to attend as most ppl need to work and commute. At least I assume that’s why as Saturday games typically have bigger crowds from what I can tell.
I stopped caring about attendance years ago. Yes it’s awesome when the place is packed but the team itself is enough to get me in the building. Especially this year.
Psu already has 15 SOG

No they don't.. The game is at Mariucci where the stats crew actually understands what the rules regarding shots are.
If the game was at Pegula, you world, of course, be correct.

I like the Gophers chances no matter who they play, but you're reacting to PSU like they're Lindenwood. They're a solid team and very well coached.
I'm believing in a sweep. PSU has an impressive record, but the resume behind it isn't the greatest. Besides going 1-0-1 vs. Mich in Happy Valley they really haven't played anyone. The Gophers are far more battle tested and just the better team. Plus, I don't think the Gophers are clicking on all 6 cylinders yet. And when they do... look out!!!
Keep your stick on the ice...
…to really pack the place they’ll need to deliver in the postseason, not just get there.
So B10 Title and Frozen Four appearance isn't good enough anymore. Got it.

This is just wrong. UND sure but no one showed for Mankato this year and I have seen Duluth enough to know the crowd is usually average for them as well. Even in the WCHA days those were not usually full houses.

Pretty cool that someone is tracking those things, but using a 1-5 scale to rate them with kind of kills its value. Would be cool to see the real numbers
@handyman you’re spot on. Through the years, the team would have close to full against the teams that would rise to the top in the WCHA. (See the Colorado College series in 1996) As different teams made their runs, the bigger the game, the more people. Pretty simple. I recall a game against BC that was big after having just played them in the Frozen Four a year before. UMD, Mankato, Bemidji just never cut it (sorry to their resident fans on the board). My only frustration is people shell out big bucks on a pro team that has basically won one division title in over 20 years. Yet the same fans are so put off because they have to watch Penn State over Alaska

ok follow up dumb questions!
what is a counterattack shot on goal…
Expected *goals* against? Does that mean goals by the other team when this player is on the ice?
and why is time on ice TOL?
TIA.
Expected goals against not shots. Counter attack shots I’m not sure how they measure.

No idea why he would use TOL.
Expected goals against is a formula for how many goals the other team "should've" scored while you were on the ice. Mostly a combination of time in your own zone/ shots against/ quality of shots against.
No idea how he calculates counterattack shots, but would guess it's mostly about players ability to transition from defense and create offense.
TOP (time of possession) in opponent's zone is a big one. +/- had always been an overrated stat, along with SOG (if you're losing, you're shooting EVERYTHING).
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
I think some shot metrics take score effects (leading or trailing) into account for that reason.

At least they're trying. It'll probably be messier with 4 events, but at least I won't be trying to deliver a birthday cake in the middle of it this time.

Almost should arrive late. The other events all start before hockey.
Hopefully the boys can carry over the momentum from the ND series into this weekend.
Go Gophs!
Gameday!! Pound the lions they annoy the crap out of me
The crowd might be light tonight but those of us who are there let’s make some noise! Get the win tonight and I think we’ll see a decent crowd tomorrow.
My only other comment on the crowds for PSU (and I promise it’s my last) is I’m always a little surprised that this series doesn’t attract more people. Tickets are usually pretty cheap, it’s become a bit of a rivalry in recent years, and it’s always a really entertaining game of hockey when Penn State and Minnesota face off.
Gophers are 6-1 in last 7 games vs Penn State
Aloha!
12-6 all time at Mariucci
I don’t think the throw everything at net strategy works well on the Olympic ice. The big sheet compliments a puck possession style of play like the Gophers play. We’ll skate around and probably possess the puck for a good 3-4 minutes then they’ll skate down the ice and just throw something on net and give it up right away. For awhile Penn State had the horses to make it work but our D core is excellent at retrieving pucks. We’ll see how it goes
