Drifts in front of garage and house.
I remember getting drifts like this in out yard as a kid. For some reason our yard would be the only one to get them so large and big. All of us kid the neighborhood would play on it, digging tunnels, making an igloo and so on. No way parents would let kids do that in their yards today. Afraid of something happening and be liable. Boy the 80's were great to grow up in.

Probably not a surprise to our contingent from SW & southern MN; I-90 closing at 2PM.

Nothing like pulling up the freeway and seeing the crossing arms down. Been there driving across North Dakota and being forced to stay in Bismarck.

I haven't checked tonight, but they were talking about winds in the hurricane force range.

My dad has been in the hospital at the UofM so I’ve been doing quite a bit of driving lately. Over the last few days of poor weather I’ve probably seen 30 cars in the ditch. All but two were pick up trucks or SUVs. Only two cars. Maybe not so ironically most of the people zooming by at or above posted speed limits with icy roads were also driving pick ups or SUVs.
Driving to and from work Wednesday and Thursday it was all pickups that went flying past everyone else.
Like I said in another thread about pickups…
I would say 25-30% people who drive a pickup, especially in the metro have no reason to drive a pickup. They drive it for image and status and really have no clue how to drive a pickup. Their bed with or without a liner is as clean as the day they bought it.

Plus, most don't realize that they should add some weight in the bed by the wheel wells. I love my pickups to drive through stuff, but on slick roads I would rather drive our SUV.

I used to have a small Nissan pickup. It had 4WD. I put cinder blocks and tube sand in the bed. I built a wooden frame to keep the weight over the wheels. Rarely ever had to use 4WD because of the extra weight and the additional clearance the truck had.
Later this week when I’m at my laptop I’ll share my story of traveling on Friday. There is a reason why I-35 was littered with semis to close down the interstate.

I would use tractor wheel weights back in the day in the back of my ‘79 Ford.

I have a Pilot with good tires and it’s pretty tough to get it sideways anytime unless I try to. I don’t look at that like “hey I can drive fast ha ha losers”, I just look at it like that allows me to comfortably drive the same speed as everyone else in almost all conditions.
Good tires are a big chunk of the pie. I put new tires on my wife’s Town & Country the first week in Dec. She probably could have made it through winter, but why. If it was June, I wouldn’t have blinked getting 4 more months. Though with the weather and road conditions in the last week plus it was hands down the right decision.

I have cop tires on my vehicle (same ones used by police). Figured if they use 'em, must be for a reason. 😉
That being said, many highways and side roads are still not that great, even now, due to the cold and the sand/salt/brine not being really effective. Ended up taking side roads from Ridgedale to Crystal today for Xmas at the parents. My brother and his fam, coming from Mounds View, agreed on the roads, and he's one of the smart pickup/SUV drivers.

I believe most cops cars around here are changed over to snow tires for the winter. Some day I’ll spend the money on a set of snow tires. I’ve just always had higher priorities.I have cop tires on my vehicle (same ones used by police). Figured if they use 'em, must be for a reason. 😉

snow tires. Always worth it. Can get through most anything in my avenger with the winter tires I have.

Close…a couple times. That’s why I got the hell off the interstate and took shelter with some friends in Iowa Friday night.

It’s truly hard to believe rain is in the forecast.
Keep your stick on the ice...
Ok... I'm just seeing no precipitation in the forecast. Though I trust the weathermen as much as I would trust an UND fan officiating an UND/Gopher Hockey game.
Keep your stick on the ice...
On Weather Underground for Thursday they say “rain showers early followed by snow showers later in the day.” Then lows drop to 18 so the roads could be icky.
So, no improvement on the roads...
The highways were okay today, but the side roads are still crap in Hopkins, Plymouth, Minnetonka, and Orono, in general. Not the DOT's fault, it's just been too cold to treat them.

Until this morning I wasn't seeing any precipitation. Now it's saying 40% chance of rain.

Thank you sweet baby lord Jesus we made it back to Mankato yesterday afternoon! What a weekend of S*#T driving conditions along with s*#tty drivers! Here is my recap.
Friday: Me, my son, and son-in-law all took off for Iowa around 10:00 am. I looked at all the DOT cameras and road conditions and future weather conditions and I thought I could beat the worst of the winds...I was wrong. Road conditions were just fine but the blowing snow got worse as we traveled. I had about 1/2 mile visibility until just north of Albert Lea, then it went to 1/4 mile or less. South of Clear Lake it got to about maybe 50' or less. I got to exit 165 on I-35 when I decided to stop going south and head to a friends house in my hometown of Iowa Falls. I just missed adding myself to an accident 3 miles north of the exit which sealed my decision to get off the road. The county roads heading to Iowa Falls were okay except by farmsteads which I had to barrel through. A drive to Iowa Falls which under perfect conditions takes 2.25 hours took 4.50 hours. Beer tasted really good that night.
Saturday: We headed out to my in-laws in Redfield at 9:30 am. The roads were okay, some drifting on the south bound and west bound lanes. I-35 was closed to the south because of so many semis had wrecked over night they had to clear them off the road before opening the southbound lanes. I had to take county roads all the way to Redfield which again weren't too bad. My wife and daughter left Mankato around 10:00 am headed south. I-35 was closed south of Albert Lea again because of wrecked semis. They had to go around via Hwy 69 which was drifted pretty bad on the south bound lanes. The visibility they said was 1/2 mile or so by the drifts but about a mile where there wasn't drifts. They got back on I-35 at the casino, the visibility was 1/2 mile or so until around Story City where it cleared up to near normal winter driving conditions. A 4 hour drive took 5 hours, which all things considered wasn't terrible.
Monday: Central Iowa got a couple types of precipitation; snow and freezing rain. Freezing rain made for a long f*#cking day. Our first 3 hours of driving sucked all the balls. I-35 had ice and too many people paid no mind to that at all and were sliding off the road left and right. We counted 65 cars in accidents or in the ditch by themselves between Ankeny and Hwy 20. The roads turned to normal at the Dows Junction exit all the way home to Mankato. Spending that first three hours only driving 30-40 mph made for a long drive.
In my 30+ years of driving I have never experienced the driving conditions that I did this past weekend. I will never put myself willingly in those again if I remember this past weekend. My hats off to the DOT drivers, police, fire, and tow truck workers for going out in that s*#t to save us stupid drivers. A big f*#k you to those drivers and semi drivers who just drove with reckless abandon like nothing would be in front of them and ended up wrecking and adding to the chaos of the day.

It is absolutely DUMPING snow here right now. Like barely visibility for me to see across the street from my desk type of snowfall.
Are you in the south metro?
Yeah Eagan I think.
We are supposed to skate at Eagan tonight. I called the rink manager to make sure they are still open. His response: “yeah we’re open. Hockey people are nuts. They are still coming out in droves.” ?
I’m in Burnsville. Not looking forward to the commute home tonight.

I'll trade your drive from Burnsville to your house for my drive on East Lake Street in Mpls. to my house... lol!!! My wife already texted me and told me she's not going into the office tomorrow.

It's complete shutdown mode down here in the sticks. The wife went in on Sunday to work to bank that day as she never works on the weekends in preparation for today and tomorrow. She just got through a 2 week period where she missed 5 out of 10 work days. This is the worst stretch of bad weather we have had in years.

Here in Mankato we woke up with about 3.5" and then got another 3"-4" between 8 am and 12 pm. Now things are just a slushy mess.

My driveway is cleared and the snow has stopped, only to find out my kid's hockey game was cancelled for a second time. The last game against this team was scheduled for the day we got 8" a couple weeks ago.
80 degrees and snowless here in Puerto Vallarta! ?

It stopped snowing in Eagan a couple hours ago. Streets seem to have been plowed.
It was actually raining (more of a fine mist) when I did go home around 6.
It snowed relentlessly in Ramsey for a few hours this afternoon, then stopped (for now). Got about 5-6 inches. Visibility during the peak was nearly down to zero.
We got about 8-9" here in NYA... But now everything is covered in ice.

Got a few inches in the Ridgedale area. As usual, the roads between Plymouth and Minnetonka were night and day. Wicked slush in Plymouth, plowed down to the surface in 'Tonka.
