They said it sounded like loud thunder in Fiji...which is 500 miles away.

Was or will there be a lot of dust ejected so there is a cooling effect? Time to stock up on long term preserved food? Anyone want to swap your gold for my extra firearms? No ammo included.?

Extra firearms? I'm not familiar with that concept.

Mankato ended up with all of 8" of snow. I plowed snow a couple times on Friday and then Saturday morning at my work to get it all cleared out of the way.

Heard a noise late last night that I assumed was something upstairs falling over. The little kid likes to stack things after all. When I let the dogs out for the final time I realized I was wrong, it was a decent sized branch out of one of our maples hitting the roof. Here's hoping it didn't punch a hole anywhere.

I came home one day about 10-12 years ago to find a huge branch of my next door neighbor’s maple tree completely sheared off his tree. A lightning strike took it off and to this day I don’t know how it missed the roof of my garage coming down

Anyone else in the Rosemount/Lakeville/Apple Valley area lose power around 4am? I heard a loud bang and a few seconds later the power went out. Not the end of world, but a bit concerning when it’s roughy -13° outside. Our thermostat is set at 72° and the temp it the house got down to 66° right before the power came back on around 6am.

Yes, we had the same thing. My wife woke me up at 5:30 (after I stayed up past midnight watching the podcast). We actually had a brownout. Incandescent bulbs worked, but not others. Nor the furnace. Not the basement I floor heating. We were at 63. I was getting ready to go buy gas for my generator when the power came back. From Dakota Electric twitter:

UPDATE: Power has been restored. The cause of the outage was the power supplier transmission system failure. Thank you for your patience!

I’m in North Lakeville, a block from 160th/CR46

Wow! We're only about a mile apart, and as I noted, there was no outage here.

A truck carrying potatoes tipped on 94 in Albertville. Temps caused the potatoes to freeze to the road, making the cleanup take longer than expected.

Similar with the "brownout". A couple lights throughout the house worked, but were very dim. And the clocks to the stove and microwave blinked during the outage. I called Dakota Electric while driving to work and was told it was a large area. Which is interesting... my sister and brother-in-law live about 1.5 miles from us and had power. And Composer lost power and MNNavy didn't.

We are at 179th and Fieldcrest and never lost power. Our old house and neighborhood just north of us did.

We live just a few miles north of Gator. No power issues at our house. I’m a light sleeper and love fans/white noise. There’s nothing more deafening than the sound of silence when your white noise shuts off during a power outage, so I would have noticed. ?

While I live a significant distance from you, thus having no real chance that I was affected, I will completely agree with the lack of fan sounds during a power outage. Has definitely caused me to wake up in the past

I’m right there with you on the deafening silence.

I sleep with a fan 365 days a year. Usually blowing right on me LoL besides needing the white noise I’m a hot sleeper. Cold feet, but always hot. Between the fan and the bed socks my husband just shakes his head.

Roads home from the game were quite slick. Looked like it snowed enough to make them slippery, but not enough to get the plows out. Saw 4 multi car accidents from Minneapolis to Woodbury.

Same... it was really slick going from 94 West to 35 South through downtown Mpls. Several vehicles biffed it. I even had some sliding cause the guy in front of me decided to power brake cause actions in front of him.

94 E was a parking lot. We were thankfully able to sneak out 280 around to snelling but there were a couple dozen accidents on the map. Someone messed up good on 35E N as there were a dozen vehicles with lights at the scene or on the way.

Yeah, unfortunately we were one of them, just us, nobody else thank god. Hit some black ice right as we entered 35 off of 94W. Spun across 3 lanes of traffic and hit the wall dead on. Crunched the front pretty badly, but still drivable to get home. Human damage limited to my glasses breaking from an airbag to the face! Honestly I was more terrified right after it happened as I was afraid another car would hit us before we got straightened out. My hubbys 20+ year old Highlander is probably toast. Thoughts and prayers for my husbands agonizing potential decision: pay (more then it’s worth) to fix his favorite vehicle he’s ever owned or put it out of its misery.

Were you in 4 wheel drive?

With deployment of airbags I can guarantee it will be totalled.

Be glad you are both okay and no one else was involved.

Driving home from Shorewood/Excelsior to Minnetonka, roads were a little slick. I knew snow was coming, didn't think it was happening that early. Highway 7 was not so bad, but the side roads sucked hardcore.

Just saw this today...

72 degrees...

2/2/1970 Nett Lake near Voyagers NP. Had a low of -35 and a high of +37 that day.

My personal best - involving a plane - left MSP it was -20F and landed in LAX few hours later to 75F.

The more unusual one for me wasn't as drastic of a change, but rather unexpected.

Got on a plane at MSP end of July, it was around 95 degrees and dewpoint of 80+. Felt like you had to cut your way through the air to get from the car to the building. AS soon as the power was started up and the AC kicked in, the pilot had to get on the PA to let people know "don't worry about that mist coming out of the vents, that's just condensation"

Get off the plane in Las Vegas (yes, went to the desert in the middle of summer). Temp was just over 80 and like a 50 degree dewpoint. Dropping the humidity going from Minnesota to Vegas in the middle of summer is pretty typical. Dropping 15 degrees of temp is really odd.

That’s what trombone players always say…
