We used to have a Podcasts thread, but I think it got purged.
Has anyone listened to Dan Carlin's Hardcore History podcast? It's fantastic.
The episodes are anywhere from 3-5 hours long. And it's literally just him sitting in a room, talking for 4 hours straight. He does it in a way that's very captivating. He uses a really interesting mix of sources, eyewitness accounts, etc.
He quite often does entire series on a single topic. I've been listening to his "Blueprint for Armageddon" series, on WWI. It's 6 parts, each part being 3-5 hours. So roughly 24 hours in total. All on WWI. I'm about 18 hours into it. I play it on my commute home to work every day.
It's been so fascinating, because I've always kind of had a base level understanding of that conflict, but have never really did a deep dive like this to fully understand it.
It takes him several months to release a new episode. Which makes sense, I suppose. If you're going to sit there for 4 hours and talk about something, you better have extensively researched it, and planned out what you're going to say. He just released a new episode over the weekend, the 2nd part in his "Supernova in the East" series, on the Japanese/Pacific theater of WWII. Can't wait to dive into that one.
If you're a history buff, I'd highly recommend it.
I am not exaggerating when I say that Hardcore History might be the single best audio production, of any kind, I have ever heard. Dan Carlin does this series to such a high level of perfection, that he really cannot be matched. I cannot recommend it enough.
The best ones are the long saga-type topics. But some of the 1-off single episodes are equally as good. My favorite is Ghosts of the Ostfront, the intro to episode 1 still gives me chills, it hits so hard. I would try to paraphrase it, but I couldn't do it justice. Just listen to it.
If you want to try to listen to these I'd recommend these specific series/epidodes:
1. Ghosts of the Ostfront (WW2 Eastern Front)
2. Wrath of the Khans (Mongolian Empire)
3. Blueprint for Armageddon (WW1)
4. Prophets of Doom (Siege of the City of Muenster)
5. King of Kings (Archaemenid Persian Empire)
6. Punic Nightmares (Roman Punic Wars)
7. Death Throes of the Republic (The fall of the Roman Republic)
8. Thor's Angels (Germanic Tribes)
9. Globalization Unto Death (Spanish American War)
10. Apache Tears (US Indian wars vs. the Apache Tribes)
11. Celtic Holocaust (Roman wars in Gaul)
12. Supernova in the East (Rise and Fall of the Japanese Empire) - Still ongoing, so it is not finished, I would listen to the others and wait for this to be done to start it

Do you know if that Ghosts of the Osfront one is available for free anywhere? The podcast app I use doesn't have it. It seems that some of them are free and others aren't?
Even if it's not free, the quality is such that I'd probably have no issue paying for it.

I am sure you can find pirated versions of it, but it is not available free through normal channels. His back catalog is for sale on his website. I decided that I would buy them, because they are good enough, that I had no problem spending the $30 for them. He did great work on them, and I wanted to pay him for that work, and not steal them. I believe only the most recent ones are available for free, and I would guess that when Supernova is done, Blueprint for Armageddon may be headed to the back catalog.
Forgot to put this here last night, but this tune is bangin'. Gonna dig into more of their stuff this weekend. Yes, Grace Slick comparisons are rampant.

Thank you both. Ghosts of the Ostfront I-IV is incredibly well done. The research it must have taken to complete that is beyond belief.

Yeah Northrop show was the only one with a cheaper price point so I made sure to get those right away. Had to be in his fan club though

That brings back some memories. I saw Neil Young and Crazy Horse at Target Center on the Smell the Horse tour on 1/22/91. Great show and really loud. Old Black was screaming. This is from that tour.
Mott the Hoople at First Ave. on April 2.

Nothing bad to say, but I would not say she " rocks "...
"Rocks" to me is...making me feel the songs. Really feel them.

That is where it's at. Yeah, I'll totally rock out to something like Bad Medicine by Bon Jovi. But for a song or songs to move me? I'll bow down and give credit.

Dick Dale -- RIP
So Slipknot has become just another rock and roll cliche' it seems. Last week long time member Chris Fehn, who wears the Pinocchio fetish mask, filed a lawsuit claiming to have not received all his royalties as a member of Slipknot. He is claiming that some members, and Corey Taylor and Shawn Crahan have been singled out, have other Slipknot affiliated companies that receive payments from the band. Fehn was told that all money was funneled through one company and then split out to each member. In the lawsuit Fehn is asking for complete forensic accounting of all Slipknot related companies and money dealings.
In response to this Slipknot has fired Fehn this morning and put out a statement saying "we are disappointed that he chose to point fingers and manufacture claims, rather than doing what was necessary to continue to be a part of SLIPKNOT. We would have preferred he not take the path that he has".
That sounds like something Corey Taylor would say. As a long time fan of Slipknot I am torn by the direction I've seen the band head with each successful turn they have made with Corey and Clown leading the way. Those two have become cliche'd rock stars who think themselves more important than the band. They used to make fun of those kinds of people but now they are those people.

I hear ya gman, as a huge Slipknot fan I agree I’d never anticipate the band going down this path and it’s sad for me to see as a longtime fan.
They just haven't been the same since Paul died. Joey leaving also didn't help for me. Add into me getting older and growing out of that music a bit. I'll still listen to hear what they put out and support them, it just doesn't feel like the way it used to.
Wife dragged me along to the Michael Buble concert (ok, the tickets were a Christmas present for her). I know about 3 non-Christmas Buble songs, but it was a very good show. That guy can sing and the big band behind him was great. He sang this song he wrote for his kids (probably inspired when his son was going through some serious health problems) -
If anyone has kids you will especially love the song (and you might wonder if someone is cutting onions).
I fricking love the Bubly commercials he is in right now!

Was listening to an old Ramones concert, started wondering how many downstrokes per minute Johnny Ramone was doing...and he was doing this for an hour+ each concert. I think 150-180 is the range, after about 30 minutes of trying to find out via interwebs. A sample of the concert I was listening to (he's on the left, when watching the vid):

This video was only uploaded in 2017, I was unaware of it...there is the "bonus" lyric/etc that is pretty graphic, even considering the nature of this song to begin with. Rather rare when the original song came out...IMO, it's the true version of said song. RIP Prince:

Good ol' Jeremy Soule never fails to deliver something awesome that makes you go through any sort of hardships. No matter whether such hardships are getting back in track after getting your army crushed and your base threatened while playing good ol' Total Annihilation on your brand new computer running on Windows 98 or, well, simulating investments in that sort of commercial real estate in Germany when you're supposed to have free time, but the company you work for needs the job done yesterday if possible.
Har Mar Superstar is singing the anthem at the Loons game again this week. He did it last year, too. I remember thinking at the time, "oh who is this washed up nobody?" because I had never heard of him.
I saw the tweet tonight that he was singing the anthem so I decided to actually look up his music. He actually has a couple pretty sweet songs. He's got a cool sound; it's unique.
Har Mar Superstar is great live and I recommend the experience to anyone.

I am heading down to Des Moines for Tool tonight. I haven't watched these, and won't.
I hate that going to a concert now involves watching through a sea of phones... Tool, at least a few years ago, was one of a few bands to have extra security removing people from the concert who were recording. With the amount of these videos, sadly it appears that may have stopped.
On a side note, for any other metal-heads on this site, a concert is coming up in October that looks spectacular.
At the Gates - one of my favorite bands in high school (Slaughter of the Soul album was my intro to scandinavian metal)
Arch Enemy - one of my favorite bands in college
and Amon Amarth - one of my favorite bands now
That is going to be one helluva lineup m/ m/
Excellent documentary on the band Chicago on Netflix right now.
Slipknot debuted a couple new songs on Jimmy Kimmel Friday and then Clown’s 22 yr old daughter died yesterday. Very very sad.

Plus the added mystery of who is playing the other set of drums since Chris Fehn was fired from the band for suing the band. It is sad that Clown's daughter died.
