30 Bales in Hopkins (nee Big Ten). Same owners, brought back the subs during the pandemic. I dunno if the subs are still there, because they went kind of hipster on the menu.

What does "hipster on the menu" mean?

Aioli, avocado toast, stuff that is all the rage the past couple years with that crowd.

Oh…..so it doesn’t mean the food has long beards, man buns, and wear knit caps…. 🤔

@greyeagle
If there was a restaurant in downtown Hopkins to find those types, that'd be the one.
Wild Boar is the bro-dudes
Mainstreet is the townies
Pink Ivy is sorta more upscale
Pub 819 is the standard mix of everyone (although that's going to be closed for QUITE a while due to a fire)

@the-rube One of those mentioned above was my go to bar back in the day when I lived in Hopkins in the early 90's. In fact, I will be going there today to meet up with a couple of guys in my Fantasy Football league that has been going since 1991. I remember Mainstreets, Archies & Blue Ribbon Bar. There was also a bar down the street ( across from the gas station) in a basement and another one adjacent to the Mainstreet parking lot ( I think it is a carpet store now). Fun times.

I was recently informed by a GPLer that I'm related to Airey

Pub 819 used to be a biker bar, I remember that when I lived in the area many years ago. Wild Boar used to be Decoy's, which used to be Archie's.

Campus isn’t the same w/o Campus Pizza, Big 10 and even the Village Wok.

What's it like where Bullwinkle's used to be compared to back in the day - still a destination spot?  I haven't driven past there in probably 25 years.

It is truly amazing how few options there are for dining on a campus our size.  I suppose some would argue there are options, but it's a lot of fast food now.  Very few sit down options.  I've been relegated to My Burger for most football games.

I can never get into Stubs on a football game day...plus the last time I was there the food didn't "sit well".

Also My Burger has $2 beers...even on game day.

I really like MyBurger.  Solid burgers vs. the rest in their category, and their fries and dipping sauce are better than all others.

While going up to Duluth we stopped for breakfast at one of our old standbys, Lazy Bear Grill in Barnum. We mostly stop for lunch and this might’ve been the first time for breakfast. They might of made the best omelette I’ve ever had. 3 egg omelette with ham, rice, mushrooms and hollandaise sauce on top. My wife even like her French toast with bacon.

Another good place for breakfast if you’re coming or going from Duluth… Dave’s Cafe in Willow River. Their breakfast choices are really good and you won’t argue with the prices!!! Just check the hours before you go.

Another good place for lunch or dinner in Willow River is the Squirrel Cage Grill.

SA/7-11 has a very good Sloppy Joe in their deli. It could have a tad more sloppy, but for $2.99 no complaints.

Had a reunion with some lonnnng time friends tonight, unfortunately it was at Luckys13 in Plymouth (not my choice). It was not great service, and the food was worse. Medium burger came out medium well (they do not offer a medium rare version, FTR), and one would think a version of a Jucy Lucy would have more than 1/2 slice cheese in it. Plus, my side of onion rings apparently means mushy fries.

It was exactly how I remembered the first 2 times I ate there (I always give 2nd chances).

Had dinner last night with the family at Trail Stop Tavern in Eagan. I’ll give 5 👍 . We’ll definitely be going back.

Followed by going to Ducks! (a claw machine arcade). My kids and myself love claw machines and take any opportunity to win items when seen fit. Spent a little more than I wanted on the kids playing claw machines. Though that place makes hand over fist. The amounts of money people were dropping was somewhat mind boggling.

The Lucky 13 in Burnsville is relocating from the Burnsville Center to a mile west on 42 in the Outback building. Never been to the Plymouth location, but the Burnsville location has always been no complaints.

Star Trib had an article on Ducks! (or at least those arcades in general). Love claw machines, was really good at them (maybe I still I am? Dunno), but I am unsure how much they cost nowadays. I always gave the prizes to kids. I didn't care about the prize. I cared about beating the machine. 😉

Not surprising.  That mall is dead.  Was in there last weekend and it’s pretty much just a race track for the silver hairs to get their steps in.   I think there’s about five stores left in that place.

@the-rube

My wife and I were up in Duluth for one of our long weekends and had lunch one day at OC. There were kids playing the clay machines and having no luck. After they were done, I walked up, put a dollar in and won right away. It was one of those large Tootsie Pops. I handed it to one of the kids and the look on his face and dad's face was worth it. You are correct it's about beating the machine than the prize.  I almost never pass a claw machine without stopping to take a look at if there's any quick wins. And my kids do the same.

I have heard so many "rumors" of the Burnsville Mall I can't keep them straight. It's sad to see such happing mall just a couple years go to be so vacant.  I've been saying for years people stop going to mall, malls will go away, and people will start missing malls. While Amazon is great it's the death to so many businesses and places. I try to shop at department stores and avoid Amazon as much possible when I can.

I do too, but it gets difficult when the department stores have less than half of what I want on their shelves. I’m pretty sure the biggest reason for that problem is that they are losing their lunch to Amazon, so it feels doubly gross to do it.

I’ll tell you what though, malls really come into their own on weekends like this one.

I hate to see malls go away, they were so much a part of the world in the late 80's and early 90's.  Both of my sisters worked in malls while they went to college so visiting them meant time in those malls.  When I was in college we drove the 40 minutes to Des Moines at least twice a month to go to the malls to just for something to do.  When I lived in Ankeny in the mid 90's I was at the mall probably every weekend with my girlfriend at the time.  Even when we first moved to Mankato in 2006 the mall here was packed every weekend.  Much like most people in Mankato I don't make it out the doors of Target or Scheels at the mall here.

Not that I want to go hang out in a mall nowadays but I do miss the nostalgia of them.

I’m not terribly surprised. That first one was lights-out fantastic for years, but each new joint was a little less great. Eventually the original started to slip as well. It closed a couple years ago, I believe.

I remember being pumped about one coming to St. Louis Park, but it honestly paled in comparison right from the jump. The last time I had anything from them was at the Market at Malcolm Yards (cool place, btw) and it was exceedingly mediocre but expensive as ever.

Honestly, not really that surprising.  They had been changing stuff around and the location in St. Louis Park straight sucks.    The food was always good at Revival but the MPLS location was way too small and the St. Paul location (while awesome) is just not a destination for anyone not on that side of the river nor was it a place that was like a hot spot for Wild Games or whatever.

edit: I should say that for Minnesota the food is awesome.  I have had minimart fried chicken in NoLa that is ten times better.

Met up with a friend at Pink Ivy (Hopkins) to try the following, and while a bit spendy, worth treating myself on the rare occasion ($54):

14oz Grilled Ribeye, Tuscan Baby Red Potatoes, Cauliflower-Parmesan Cream Sauce, Red Wine Shallot Butter

And my friend took a pic, so you all can have your food porn for the night:

No food porn pics but we splurged at a Cooper’s Hawk last night.  I had surf and turf; the turf was a prime churrasco grilled steak.  I ordered medium but it was more medium rare (which is ok; I like medium rare but too often I get a live cow so I’ve gone to ordering medium); it might have been the best steak I’ve ever had.

Clearly I don’t eat a lot of steak and I’m sure there are far better out there but I enjoyed it.   Probably more so than the 70 year old snowbirds around the corner overpaying for their Charlie’s steak house dinner. 😁

Having worked in the restaurant biz as a cook, in general, you cook it *slightly* less than the degree ordered. You can always cook it more...

Funny, my neighbor mentioned Charlie's tonight! Grin

It's pre-cut after cooking, and all the ingredients were piled on top of one another, but somehow organized. It was not compartmentalized. It worked, I cannot explain why. All I can say, it was delicious, and my friend was on the same wavelength. Sent reviews to another friend, who could not  make it, and his response? "Oh, F you."

That must be a new "high end" steak place thing...admittedly it's been a long time since I've been to one of those.  I am pretty sure I can cut my own steak.  😀

personally dislike it when it’s precut, but guess it is to allow the accompanying things, sauces, etc to have their flavor more intertwined/amongst the meat as well as to halt the cooking process during the resting of the meat. It’s pretty rare I order steak when I’m out as I like it best on my grill at home, but agree it seems to be becoming more often they precut it for you

I think it’s a new thing as well. I watch restaurant clips and I’m seeing more and more the server comes to the table and puts on a presentation of adding salt or seasoning followed by cutting up your steak. I would prefer then to keep their fingers off it once it comes out.

Weird. My only guess is they are tired of perfectly good steak being wasted after the customer slices with the grain and then claims it is too tough.

One place I like for a reasonable priced steak is Texas Roadhouse. Anything the cook on the grill is good and with flavor. Steaks, burgers, pork, mushrooms, onions… the seasoning they use and the flavor in the grill good. Like an old cask iron skillet, it puts our flavor on it’s own even without seasoning.

I've eaten my meat like this all my life. The first thing I do is cut it up and mix it with my potatoes and vegies.

On my own accord, I've mixed foods, but that's up to me, not the server/chef/etc. 😉

When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.

The one thing I don't mix is bacon. If I order a burger/sandwich or a dish with strips of bacon. I wait until I finish everything and eat the strips last. Bacon strips are like my dessert.

I've got to say that I do leave the bacon on my burger.  The bits on the end that hang off the side of the burger get broken off and set aside for "dessert" at the end, though.
