Top Gun: Maverick…
Keep your stick on the ice...
Top Gun: Maverick was outstanding. It's also refreshing to see something made for a theater experience that's not a superhero movie.
I am glad I did not go to the theaters for The Batman, picked it up from Red Box, I guess I liked The Dark Knight to much and expected to much
but The Batman I thought was over rated
Aloha!

Agree, Maverick is outstanding! And for those of us (old enough) to have (first) seen Top Gun in a theatre in 1986…VERY nostalgic! ????
If Maverick doesn't have at least a nod to the following sequence of quotes, I will be slightly disappointed, as I think this was such a great scene/exchange of words. Rather underrated:
Carole: Hey, Goose, you big stuuuuuud!
Goose: That's me, honey.
Carole: Take me to bed or lose me forever.
Goose: Show me the way home, honey!

Yes (without giving away spoilers) there is a nod to that particular scene in Maverick. I’d recommend you not wait this one out, this needs to be seen in a theatre to get the full effect.
I’ll also opine that Jennifer Connelly as “Penny Benjamin” adds a nice touch to the storyline.
From the trailer it appears the new top gun movie is just an updated version of the original. Would those who have seen it say that’s accurate, or is that just the glimpse we get in the trailer?

That’s a hard question to answer without giving away spoilers. I’ll just say there are more layers to Maverick than Top Gun & the thrust of the storyline is somewhat more intricate in Maverick. But…if you liked the original, you’ll like Maverick…if you didn’t, you probably won’t. This movie did a good job blending the non flying segments (in a movie about fighter pilots) with the action sequences. But that’s just my opinion….?
Top Gun: Maverick rented the fight jets for $11,374 an hour.

Many will miss this one.
I know what's up with that reference. Which solves a riddle of sorts from the first movie: WHO WAS IT?

Earth And Blood (Netflix streaming):
Saïd owns a sawmill deep in the woods, which he decides to sell. Little does he know that one of his apprentices was cornered by his brother and forced to hide a large amount of cocaine inside the factory.
French movie, and frankly, I don't even know why they bothered with the subplots. They meant NOTHING to the main plot. It is pretty much a trainwreck of a movie. I had an inkling of that, given that it was about 80 minutes long, but, hey, had to give it a try. Whoops.

I watched American Underdog, which is basically the Kurt Warner story. Once again Hollywood takes what is a good story and over-dramatized it. Also, once again, Hollywood makes Iowa look like nothing but wheat fields.
Having the Iowa Barnstormers practice in a field surrounded by hay bales and then having a rodeo arena connected to Vets Auditorium where they played are two of the biggest jokes in the entire movie. It's no wonder why the rest of the US thinks Iowa is a joke but for the life of me I will never understand why Hollywood loves to pigeon hole the optic of the state of Iowa in its movies. How is it that "Take This Job and Shove It" is about the only movie that show Iowa how it really is.
I wonder why even Kurt Warner endorsed this movie when they overblown his story. I get it, it's Hollywood and this is what they do. Like I said Kurt Warner's story has plenty of drama if it was shown like it happened. This movie movie just made it feel like one of those Hallmark over the top type of flicks.
If you have a chance...skip this movie.

My wife is from a small town in Iowa. We go back to visit frequently, so I've spent my share of time there. I'd say "The Straight Story" is a pretty accurate representation of Iowa.

The movie is still Kurt’s story. Yeah, they take some Hollywood liberties, but most people who watch the movie realize that (the running out of gas on a cold winter day in the middle of Tim-Buck-2 with his family in the car scene) was clearly unnecessary….I get that along with the scenes you mentioned. But at it’s core, the movie is about Kurt’s perseverance & Brenda believing in him & Kurt overcoming long odds & Dick Vermeil believing in him. Based on that, it’s at least worth watching on Netflix or DVD in my view.

I remember when Trent Green went down, and Warner was named starter for the Rams. I was a season ticket holder for the MN Fighting Pike, and had seen Warner play in the IA/MN game...I told my friends that the Rams would be just fine. Did I expect that LEVEL of success? No. But I knew Warner was NO slouch.
Sorry To Bother You (Netflix streaming):
In an alternate present-day version of Oakland, telemarketer Cassius Green discovers a magical key to professional success, propelling him into a universe of greed.
Satire movie, it could have been SO good, but instead of subtle-ish cues here and there, or some snark (think "Thank You For Not Smoking"), it hits you over the head with obviousness and straight out over-the-top WTF silliness. It's a combo of that movie, "Office Space," and a touch of "Idiocracy." By the time I decided I didn't care for it much, I was already 2/3 into it, and just wanted to see how it ended. Those who play/have played poker call that "pot-committed." I had to watch it until the end, at that point.

The straight story was partially filmed in my wife's hometown of Clermont. The lawn mower from the movie is on display in a building there yet. I would agree that the movie is a good representation of Iowa except the mechanic from the John Deere shop, that is a bit over the top.

Disappearance At Clifton Hill (Netflix streaming):
Follows a troubled young woman returning to her hometown of Niagara Falls, where the memory of a long-ago kidnapping quickly ensnares her.
Nicely layered, complex main character. The ending was...kind of "AUGH! Really?" but in a good way. The audience finds out clues as the main characters do, which I like. There's no "How do you NOT see this" when the audience is clued into such things. 100 minutes, so nice and tight, but the story doesn't move quickly. It's meticulous. I'd recommend watching this.

The Protege (Amazon Prime):
Rescued as a child by the legendary assassin Moody, Anna is the world's most skilled contract killer. However, when Moody is brutally killed, she vows revenge for the man who taught her everything she knows.
Decent action movie, some twists, of course, and the ending...still processing that one, unsure if I like it or not, and that may be the point. Sam L, Maggie Q, and Michael Keaton are all excellent in it, and I have to say, that's a decent starring cast. It's not on my "buy the DVD" list, but I'd probably watch it again.

The Unjust (Netflix streaming, Korean w/subtitles):
When the most probable serial killer suspect dies and the case looks like it's reached a dead end, police brass decide to create a killer - and anyone will do.
First off, while I don't speak or read ANY Korean, the subtitles are off at times, it's that obvious in translation/context, but one will get the idea. That being said, really good movie, intersecting plot lines, double-crossing, etc, like any other American cop drama of this sort. Secondly, the mental games/etc are above par, how everyone thinks 2-3 steps ahead and how to make the next move. Definitely worth a watch.

Run All Night (Netflix disc):
Mobster and hit man Jimmy Conlon has one night to figure out where his loyalties lie: with his estranged son, Mike, whose life is in danger, or his longtime best friend, mob boss Shawn Maguire, who wants Mike to pay for the death of his own son.
It's a Liam Neeson action/drama. For the most part, you can take it from there. It does also star Ed Harris, Vincent D'Onofrio, and a few "Oh, That Guy!" actors. It was okay. Good story about career choices and personal choices and that weird gray area that lives between the two. I would rank it as a good time-killer. One wouldn't go out of their way to watch it, but one wouldn't shut it off.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
Riot (Netflix streaming):
Cop Jack Stone robs a Russian mob bank to end in the same prison as the mob boss killing Jack's wife. An inmate helps him as does a reporter. Lots of fights.
Has Dolph in it, and he's not the star. Chuck Liddell (MMA) is one of the main co-stars. Just sayin'. The last sentence in the summary describes the movie, almost to a T. Over-choreographed fights, the story really doesn't matter. It's action, baby! Entertaining enough, but turn your brain off for this one. 90 minutes of cage-fighting. In a prison. With a weak attempt at drama.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
Hustle (Netflix streaming):
A basketball scout discovers a phenomenal street ball player while in Spain and sees the prospect as his opportunity to get back into the NBA.
I heard good things, despite it being an Adam Sandler movie. I was not disappointed. Between "Uncut Gems" (although to be fair, he basically played John Turturro in that one) and this...he keeps this up...I like it. It wasn't great, lots of cliches and such, but it was how you told the story. This one did ok with it. I went from zero expectations, to "ok it might be average" after hearing reviews, to "I kind of liked it" after the viewing. It does keep you hanging a little on the redemption/conviction basic premise...I think that was the key to this one; they did that quite well.

Silence (Netflix streaming):
In the 17th century, two Portuguese Jesuit priests travel to Japan in an attempt to locate their mentor, who is rumored to have committed apostasy, and to propagate Catholicism.
Scorsese-directed. Adam Driver, Andrew Garfield, Liam Neeson. Sounds great, right? Snoozefest. 3/4 of the movie has nothing to do with the main plot, it's personal reflection and such. Sure, that ties INTO the main plot, but that stuff should be sub-plot, and in this case everything is reversed. Also, while I very much know how tedious Scorsese is...he goes WAY overboard with that trait here.
All in all, had similar themes as Shogun (Japanese rejecting Western culture) but in this case (whether you prefer the book or mini-series of Shogun, doesn't matter), Watching your 5GB file download in Turkmenistan at .50/mbps is more exciting.

Jurassic World Dominion. I don't care what anyone says - just take a chill pill, sit back and watch. It wasn't high art and I was slightly annoyed by the (middle third?) which became Jurassic Park meets M:I meets James Bond (also the explanation of the how the new girl played into the major plot was a stretch), but I enjoyed the setup overall, the final third was classic JP, they didn't try to get sentimental with the returning characters and it was fun.

I rarely see movies in a theater anymore but hoping to catch this one before it’s gone. Glad you enjoyed it!
I’m in agreement about just enjoying a movie and not over analyzing, Rube style. 😉
Interceptor (Netflix streaming):
One Army captain must use her years of tactical training and military expertise when a simultaneous coordinated attack threatens the remote missile interceptor station she is in command of.
While this movie is entertaining, let's sum it up:
Corny dialogue:
Computer (loud enough so EVERYONE can hear): High Asset Elimination Procedure Initiated. 13 seconds until completion.
Heroine: WE HAVE 13 SECONDS TO FIND A SOLUTION!
Action: gotta have that closed-quarters action, so the tiny female can defeat the 8'4" beast of a mercenary!
Backstory (which is honestly the best part of the movie, if they rolled with it, and turned it into more of A Few Good Men story): The way they DID execute it, though, was 100% Lifetime/Hallmark style.
As I said, it's entertaining. That's about the best I can say.

We watched it and if it had been a movie I watched on a plane where the selection was awful I'd have less complaints haha.
Finally watched No Time To Die, this has to be the best Bond movie right? It’s phenomenal.
Scream (2022 "requel;" don't worry, the definition is explained in the movie, which fits in with the first 3 sentences of the following review) (Netflix disc):
META. All the meta. And it's awesome. This one captures all the magic that was in the first one. I had tempered expectations, and it was a complete burst of laughter and fist-pumps throughout the movie. From the subtle to the obvious, this hit the mark. Highly recommend.

The Man From Toronto (Netflix streaming):
The world's deadliest assassin and New York's biggest screw-up are mistaken for each other at an Airbnb rental.
Woody Harrelson/Kevin Hart star in this...you can see where this is going. Mis-matched forced partnership, hilarity ensues.
Hart was always a little over the top for me, if he dialed it back about 10-20%? Awesome. The awkward buddy-buddy relationship reminded me a lot of Woody/Jesse Eisenberg in the Zombieland movies.
That being said, it is a fun movie, definitely grab some popcorn. It is wide open for this to become a franchise, and I'd be along for the ride if they made some small tweaks. I'd say...maybe along the lines of The Expendables. Go that route, given the origin story.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
I also thought "Man From Toronto" was decent and worth a watch if you like Kevin Hart. Not an all time great, but not Grown Ups 2 bad either.
Spiderhead (Netflix streaming):
In the near future, convicts are offered the chance to volunteer as medical subjects to shorten their sentence. One such subject for a new drug capable of generating feelings of love begins questioning the reality of his emotions.
The main convict, Miles Teller, is John Cusack Jr, I swear. Mannerisms, style, everything (he's not, though).
Good movie, some nice twists, definitely keeps you wondering what the whole thing is about until halfway through the movie or so. It takes its time unraveling the plot. The ending was meh, felt it was a bit rushed, I dare say a bit sloppy/cliched like they realized, "Crap, we have to wrap this up in 15-20 minutes! Let's uh, just do this."
Still, worth a watch.

Polar (Netflix streaming):
A retiring assassin suddenly finds himself on the receiving end of a hit, contracted by none other than his own employer seeking to cash in on the pensions of aging employees.
Subtext, Netflix's additional summary: (Leon) The Professional meets John Wick
The subtext is accurate. However, it's a B-movie of that version. Good plot, good action, but overall the execution could be much better. MUCH better. Just felt like a subpar effort; could have sharpened the edges, so to speak. Had all the tools, but neglected to find the right person to do the job. Still, it's worth a watch. Mads Mikkelsen is very good. Vanessa Hudgens does what she can, given the writing she has to deal with. The employer? That was a joke role. So over the top weird/eccentric/whatever, I couldn't tell if they were trying for dark humor or just didn't give a sh*. Horrible character. The rest of the assassin crew after the main character? A mix of good and bad, as far as entertainment. That's a wash.

Top Gun: Maverick (theater):
After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy's top aviators, Pete Mitchell is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him.
Great movie. Had the right amounts of feels, nostalgia, action, and humor. Each of these were very much balanced out from start to finish, to go along with a decent plot. The actor who plays Goose's son is a dead-on spitting image of him, in looks and mannerisms. Highly recommend this movie; hell, it got me to a theater for the first time in probably 5-6 years...

The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent (Netflix disc):
In this action-packed comedy, Nicolas Cage plays Nick Cage, channeling his iconic characters as he's caught between a superfan (Pedro Pascal) and a CIA agent (Tiffany Haddish).
Oh. My. God. Hilarious. I will admit, I have not seen the majority of the 100 roles he's played (this was his 100th, per IMDB), and I feel the bigger Nic fan you are/more movies you've seen him in, the more you will appreciate it. That being said, as a casual fan, I was in stitches. Watching him trying not to act as an actor (and he plays himself, in reality) in some sequences (like, running from danger) is absolutely hilarious.
This is pure meta, and a definite must-watch. I can't spoil it, of course, but definitely pay attention to the plot within the plot within the plot. JFC, this was brilliantly written.

I saw it over the 4th weekend. The action was GOOD. The story…not really sure there was a story. Let’s put it this way…”Moonraker” had a better story line ?? with a Tim Cook ripoff lookalike playing Victor Drax. And some of the chase sequences defied any sense of reality…but that’s par for the course. It had its moments, but was very fragmented. It was a passable, 2 plus hours…but not by much…
Took the kids to see Minions: Rise of Gru on the 4th. The story shows the early days of Gru becoming a supervillain. First half of the movie is vintage minion tomfoolery. The story is ok, nothing great, but if you like the franchise it's worth seeing
I think I realized why I prefer to see movies outside of the theater after this experience. There was a group of boys about 10-12 years old sitting next to me and they spent half the movie either talking, getting up to lean over to the row in front of us to get popcorn from the moms, or walking around down to the next aisle to do something else. Then there was what appeared to be a grandfather who got up 4-5 times during the movie to alternate between his seat and one 3 down to give the kids with him food. This movie was the first time we brought our 4 year old to the theater and he was better behaved than either of these parties.
Girl In The Picture (Netflix streaming):
A young mother's mysterious death and her son's subsequent kidnapping blow open a decades-long mystery about the woman's true identity, and the murderous federal fugitive at the center of it all.
Well, that was f* upped 33 different ways until Sunday. JFC. MANY layers to this true story, I mean, what in the actual F? If you thought "Making A Murderer" was a bit crazy...wow.
I planned on a double feature tonight, starting with this documentary. Oops. This was so crazy that I wasn't even in the mood to watch another movie. Recommend if you're into the true crime stories.

Contraband (Netflix streaming):
To protect his brother-in-law from a drug lord, a former smuggler heads to Panama to score millions of dollars in counterfeit bills.
Standard Mark Wahlberg action movie, it's worth a view for something to watch. Lots of cliches and tropes, but it wasn't horrible. I really don't have anything to say about it, other than that.

Backtrace (Netflix streaming):
Left with amnesia after bank heist gone wrong, a man gets busted out of prison and given a drug to help recover his memory--and the missing loot.
Pretty much a B movie, despite Stallone being in it (not that he's really an A-lister like he used to be, but I digress)...
90 minute movie that probably could have been shortened to a tv episode of your everyday Crime Of The Week Cop Show. Really not much to say here, I suppose with better writing it might have been better. The acting leaves something to be desired all around, but actors can only do so much with the writing. For example, there's a tearful scene in here, and it just looks so forced and awkward. Bleh.
I wouldn't waste my time on it.

The 355 (Netflix disc):
When a top-secret weapon falls into mercenary hands, a wild card CIA agent joins forces with three international agents on a lethal mission to retrieve it, while staying a step ahead of a mysterious woman who's tracking their every move.
Pure action/spy movie, great cast (Diane Kruger at her tough/sexy best, I must say). Very entertaining, some obvious twists, but that really wasn't the point of the movie. This was a Birds Of Prey/Harley Quinn type point to be made. I loved it, very much worth watching.

RRR (Netflix streaming, Indian movie, so it's subtitled):
A fictitious story about two legendary revolutionaries and their journey away from home before they started fighting for their country in 1920s.
Quite the plot, and many subplots, 3hrs long, and don't worry, doesn't seem like it. Why, you ask? Because it's a WHAT IN THE ACTUAL F* HOLY SH* ACTION, I SWEAR MICHAEL BAY AND JOHN WOO DECIDED TO MAKE A MOVIE AFTER A MONTH LONG COKE BENDER AND DECIDED TO INVITE QUENTIN TARANTINO OVER TO FINISH IT OFF (and then invited Martin Scorcese to give it all the actual storylines).
And I say that as a GOOD thing. This movie is off the rails. HIGHLY recommend. I will 99% probably add this DVD to the home library.
EDIT: digging into it, doesn't look like I will have the option to buy the DVD. 🙁
