Thunder Force (Netflix Streaming):
In a world where supervillains are commonplace, two estranged childhood best friends reunite after one devises a treatment that gives them powers to protect their city.
Incredibly inane, stupid, silly comedy. Expect nothing, and you'll get a couple good moments out of it. But, somehow, it's somewhat entertaining, for what it is. A complete non-guilty time-waster of a movie. Comparable to something like the first Grown-Ups with Adam Sandler (FTR, I think there's a second Grown Ups, and didn't watch that one; also, only watched the first one b/c it came free with my PS3 when I bought it ).

Furioza (Netflix streaming):
An event from the past separates the fate of three friends. Unexpectedly, in the life of David (Mateusz Banasiuk) she appears again. Dzika (Weronika Ksiazkiewicz) - once the love of his life, now an experienced policewoman, makes him an offer that cannot be rejected. Either he becomes a police informant, or his brother (Wojciech Zielinski) will go to prison with a long-term sentence. Pressed against the wall, David finally succumbs, and his main goal becomes to infiltrate in an organized criminal group. Hitting the middle of a war for influence and money, he will have to face constant suspicion from Golden's old friend (Mateusz Damiecki). He will soon discover that the world from which he tried to free himself draws him in with redoubled strength.
This is a very decent movie, it is subtitled so beware. I tell ya, soccer hooligans! Kidding aside, it's a gangster movie, and does well showing how the Polish culture/hooligan culture works. A bit different than here, for sure, with the different codes and such. A bit long, about 2 1/2 hours, but I didn't mind watching it fully through.

I’m looking forward to seeing The Survivor. Ben Foster is the main star, an under-rated actor who I don’t think gets enough praise.

Sleight (Netflix streaming):
A young street magician (Jacob Latimore) is left to care for his little sister after their parents' passing, and turns to illegal activities to keep a roof over their heads. When he gets in too deep, his sister is kidnapped, and he is forced to use his magic and brilliant mind to save her.
It's an okay movie. Basic story of someone who has to be in the game (the hustle, drug-dealing, etc) to survive, and has to eventually own up to his actions. The "magic" is just science, but it is out there in the way of possibility. That's the hook in this movie, and I will give it credit for originality in that aspect. 90 minutes long or so, and that's good, because I don't know what they could really do to stretch it out without it becoming boring.

For my daughter's 12th birthday we took her to see Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore today. For you Harry Potter fans this movie is really about the rise of Grindelwald and Dumbledore's attempt to break the blood oath they formed as younger wizards.
The movie kind of goes all over the place but I think a Harry Potter fan will find it an entertaining couple of hours.
Choose Or Die (Netflix streaming):
After firing up a lost 80s survival horror game, a young coder unleashes a hidden curse that tears reality apart, forcing her to make terrifying decisions and face deadly consequences.
I really hope they were going for that schlocky 80's style horror movie, because if so, they nailed it. I like the concept, although I think "13 Sins" was a better version of it (and not as schlocky). A little over the top with gore-ish things, but it calmed down, and that's a good thing. It's not creepy or scary, but I will say it ropes you in, because you do want to find out how it ends.

Low Riders (Netflix streaming):
A young street artist in East Los Angeles is caught between his father's obsession with lowrider car culture, his ex-felon brother and his need for self-expression.
While fictional, it does drop in some real history as to WHY low-riders are important to the Latinx culture. Good drama, nothing over the top, and well, the rides in the movie are pretty bad-ass. FTR, when I wear button up shirts (especially flannel) I do wear them "cholo-style" where the top button is buttoned. Definitely recommend this one.

There is one obvious question about The Riddler, but given the character, it's too obvious that the answer is not the answer, but then again, it's so obvious, you dismiss it, so it could be the answer. With the new board, I dunno how to hide things, so I'll just say a two word sentence: ID Card. I really do hope that is not a spoiler.

From what I've seen on the google machine, the ID card is a reference to a comic from 2005 in which The Riddler was the main antagonist (and from the sounds of it, really jumped up in the villain ladder). Allegedly it is one of the aliases the Riddler used after he changed his name (DCComics website confirmed that it is an actual alias on their website in March).
The fan theories on this are a rabbit hole. I haven't been able to find any comic where that alias was used, the only source I've seen is from the DCComics website saying it is, in fact, an alias used by The Riddler.

My gut says that we'll see him again in the next Batman alongside his new friend, which is where they will pay off the alias a bit more? I'm trying to be as spoiler-free as possible.
If you haven't seen the footage left on the cutting room floor of Riddler's new friend, I'd definitely recommend going to YouTube and checking it out. There was a roughly 5min scene that was cut from the theatrical release that is...exceptional.
Sadly from what I've read his friend may not play a significant part in the sequel. Too bad if true because I thought the cut scene was exceptional.
House Of Gucci (Netflix Disc):
When Patrizia Reggiani, an outsider from humble beginnings, marries into the Gucci family, her unbridled ambition begins to unravel their legacy and triggers a reckless spiral of betrayal, decadence, revenge, and ultimately...murder.
Talk about first world problems. 😉 . All star cast, the acting was great. However, felt more like a double episode soap opera than a movie. Was it great? No. Was it bad? No. Did it hold my attention? Yes, enough to keep me occupied to see it to the end (and it is a 2 1/2 hour movie). Not knowing the story was probably the only thing that kept me going. If you are a TMZ-head, or know the Gucci story, I expect you'd be bored with this. I could be wrong, just my gut feeling.

The Batman theory
For those with HBO Max, you can watch Batman Hush (animated), which I think plays into The Batman a bit. In Hush, the antagonist (Hush) is a childhood friend of Bruce Wayne, born to rich parents like Bruce, etc. Hush (real name was Thomas Elliot) tried to kill his parents, as his dad was abusive. Bruce Wayne's dad saved his mother's life, thus foiling his plan to murder both his parents and spawning a grudge against Bruce Wayne. Long story short: Riddler learns Batman's secret identity and offers to sell it to Thomas/Hush, but instead Hush teams up with Riddler to torment Batman/Bruce Wayne by toying with his enemies, revealing corruption, etc. In the movie, they not-so-subtly refer to HUSH in the house where the history is revealed to Batman.
In the movie, the journalist who was writing the big news article/piece about Thomas Wayne and the Wayne family history was named Edward Elliot, which could be a nod at Thomas Elliot's involvement. It would obviously be a slight change to Hush's origin story but Thomas Wayne having Thomas Elliot's father killed before exposing his corruption could be used as the factor that ultimately drives Hush's rage toward Bruce/Batman. When Riddler finds out Batman's true identity, he could have begun working with Hush to torment Batman. There is backstory between Hush and Joker as well, which may be why they briefly introduced Joker at the end of the movie (and could explain why they cut the scene they cut). Joker and Hush have a rivalry in the Hush comic series run, and ultimately battle each other multiple times.
With Edward Nashton being apprehended in The Batman, it's possible that Hush breaks him and Joker out in the sequel, revealing Hush as the ultimate mastermind behind the Riddler. Nashton then changes his name to Edward Nygma and then uses the "other" ID card teased in his arrest as his new fake identity.
This is the theory that holds the most water for me, at least.
Death On The Nile (2022) (HBOMax):
While on vacation on the Nile, Hercule Poirot must investigate the murder of a young heiress.
It was decent. The foreshadowing was subtle enough to not give anything away before hindsight kicked in, which is a good sign. A lot of "I think I have it! Wait, nope, that doesn't make sense overall" stuff. A tight 2 hours (give or take a couple minutes) so it doesn't waste time. A little heavy on the "what love does" theme, but every movie has its flaws. I'd watch it again, to catch all the details.

"Unfulfilled and facing financial ruin, actor Nick Cage accepts a $1 million offer to attend a wealthy fan's (Pascal) birthday party. Things take a wildly unexpected turn when a CIA operative recruits Cage for an unusual mission."
I would say this is a great popcorn movie. It was funny and has some good action, and coming in under 2 hours, it was a great way to spend a cold and cloudy Sunday afternoon.

It's where you are basically making fun of yourself in this case. "Face/Off" had Nic Cage's and John Travolta's characters switch places, and then the actual actors played caricatures of themselves. Great action movie, and hilarious to see the roles...

Spent a rainy afternoon at The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. Okay, this movie is funny. Far funnier then I was expecting. Nicholas Cage has no problem mocking his career, his acting shtick, his characters. When the opening screen is ConAir you know you’re in for a good time.

Belfast (Netflix disc):
A young boy and his working class family in Belfast experience The Troubles.
Shot in mostly black and white, this is a direct and frank viewing of that life through the eyes of a younger child. Old enough to sort of know what is going on, but not exactly why. Caught between wonderment and understanding. I thought it was very well done, loved the soundtrack tie-ins given the lyrics, and the movies/tv shows they watched, as those also were directly tied into the story itself.
Definitely recommend. It doesn't glorify or dramatize his (somewhat auto-biographical) story. It just is the story.

Been watching classic 80's movies on the RuKu with the wife. Reliving my grade school and jr. high movie years. And still haven't been to a movie theater since 2006 (We Are Marshall)... LoL!!!

The Gentlemen (Netflix Streaming):
An American expat tries to sell off his highly profitable marijuana empire in London, triggering plots, schemes, bribery, and blackmail in an attempt to steal his domain out from under him.
Imagine Guy Ritchie (who did this movie) making his version of "Get Shorty." 😉 Great cast, Hugh Grant absolutely KILLS IT in his role. Charlie Hunnam (Sons Of Anarchy, and some other stuff), Matt McC, and Colin Farrell also star, as for big names. Very entertaining, and given that it's Guy Ritchie, expect it to escalate more and more as the story goes on, until it's just a bit over the top.

The Outpost (Netflix streaming):
An Amercian outpost in a Kush mountains valley is under constant attack by the Taliban
Ok, WHO IN THE HELL THOUGHT A OUTPOST IN A HOSTILE MOUNTAIN VALLEY WAS A GOOD IDEA? Ok, calming down, but seriously, are kindergarteners running that op?
The movie itself was good. Some real soldiers did participate in the movie, some playing themselves. From what I've read, it's even more accurate than the book it's based on. It's...very real, in light-hearted moments and dark, gruesome moments. Rather intense overall, it's not a movie you just want to pop in so you can watch something for a couple hours.

Parallel Mothers (Netflix disc):
Two mothers give birth on the same day, and form a lifetime bond.
Spanish movie, so subtitles. Penelope Cruz stars, hence me going way out of my wheelhouse to take a chance on this movie. I like her acting chops. 2 hours long, in the 60-90 minute range, it got really Lifetime-y. It recovered, thank God. What was a great start could have ended horribly. It did not. It was actually a very solid ending, and I can't say why without spoiling it. Definitely worth a watch, it is worth it.

Me too. I had very high expectations since Sam Raimi was the director and a half hour in I was disappointed, like…this is it?Then came the greatest throwback cameo in movie history and it was on!
This is what Raimi can do with an unlimited budget.
Operation Mincemeat (Netflix streaming):
During WWII, two intelligence officers use a corpse and false papers to outwit German troops.
A complete WTF story, based on a true mission, and not many liberties were taken. The details are astounding to pull off an operation like this, there was a subplot that was painfully obvious from the get-go, could have done without it, the main story was enough to be a worthwhile watch.
