Ghostbusters: Afterlife (Netflix disc):
When a single mom and her two kids arrive in a small town, they begin to discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind.
The first half of the movie is outstanding. Really builds up the characters, and puts the viewer in a place where they wonder "ok, how is this all going to come together?" and all the little nods to the first Ghostbusters were great. The start of the second half, it starts moving quickly into Sequel Rehash, it was starting to lose me a bit, but it recovered, and resulted in a solid ending.
Worth a trip down nostalgia lane.

Nightmare Alley (HBOMax):
A grifter working his way up from low-ranking carnival worker to lauded psychic medium matches wits with a psychiatrist bent on exposing him.
Bizarre, but nice old-timey movie. I wasn't sure if I would like it, but it was satisfying. A piece or two didn't match up until the very ending, quite the homage to that era of movie-making. 2.5 hours, AND you have to be in the mood for such a movie, but once you're there, yeah, go for it. I think you'd be pleased.
Side note: It does help if you've seen "Freaks" or American Horror Story (the carnival one), to understand how that culture works.

Saw this tweet tonight, had to laugh:
That Swedish dude who lured everyone to his hometown in MIDSOMMAR? Yeah, he needs his ass beat. Just, if any European ever invites you to visit their hometown, punch them and RUN. Between this dude and the chick from HOSTEL, I don't trust no one from that continent.
I'd also add that French kid in Taken (the first one), and trying to translate any Russian diary (I know, Russia is a different continent, but this is not where the diary was found...) in Eastern Promises.

The Weekend Away (Netflix streaming):
A weekend getaway to Croatia that goes awry when a woman is accused of killing her best friend. As she attempts to clear her name and uncover the truth, her efforts unearth a painful secret.
Can of worms. And then another can. Overall, it's worth a watch, but the movie can't help itself by adding that one...last...twist. One just has to guess what that one last twist is. Sometimes, one twist is enough. Despite the overkill, it's a decent movie.

The Adam Project (Netflix streaming):
After accidentally crash-landing in 2022, time-traveling fighter pilot Adam Reed teams up with his 12-year-old self for a mission to save the future.
Loved this movie. Ryan Reynolds (and we all know what he is in movies ), but the rest of the starring cast is great. The kid in the movie? The timing and delivery is spot-on to Reynolds' characteristics, and seemed completely natural, not forced, which you find with many a child actor. I read the hype, and went in thinking "I dunno if this is going to be worth it..." and it was. The story was good, the actors were great, very much worth a watch.
Watched this over the weekend. Parts of it were good, and I really liked the first 30 minutes or so. It got a little too cartoony as it went on though.
I half expected Scott Evil to show up and ask Sorian why the anonymous henchmen attacked the hero one at a time, and why it was necessary to waste time explaining things to the good guy instead of just killing him.

Long Story Short (Netflix streaming):
Teddy wakes up the morning after his wedding to discover that every few minutes he's jumping forward to the next year of his life.
Well, the lead actor is basically an Australian Ryan Reynolds, and it is a sort of rom-com, but I enjoyed it. It's kinda like Groundhog Day (but not; and that movie is referenced a couple times). It's a nice romp of "what-ifs" and such. About 100 minutes long, so if you don't like it, it's not a huge waste of time.

Land (HBOMax)
A bereaved woman seeks out a new life, off the grid in Wyoming.
Explores the character and the means to switch lifestyles from a busy city life, to 100% hermit. A bit dramatic during the first half of the movie, with the physicality of the life, but delves into the psychological effects as well. It settles in nicely, and makes for a decent dramatic story. It's slow, but worth it.

Kimi (HBOMax):
An agoraphobic Seattle tech worker uncovers evidence of a crime.
This is a messy movie, there is nothing clean cut about this one. Somehow, it works. "Scattershot" is the word that comes to mind. The main character has a LOT of issues, mentally, and all are addressed here, and are a main part of the story. It borrows from many other movies, IMO, including but not limited to "Girl With" trilogy, "Copycat" (Sigourney Weaver), and "The Net" (Sandra Bullock).
If you're into this sort of subject matter, dive in. If you are not a social media/internet person, you may not like it as much.

Summer Of Soul (Dis+)
Documentary about the legendary 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival which celebrated African-American music and culture and promoted Black pride and unity.
Amazing footage. Basically, the Black Woodstock. ?uestlove (drummer for The Roots) is behind this project, and he did a tremendous job. Apparently, this footage has been in a basement for 50 years, never seen. Besides the music, it delves into the social/political aspects of the time, really thought out, and the presentation is astounding. Highly recommend.

The Bubble (Netflix streaming):
A group of actors and actresses stuck inside a pandemic bubble at a hotel attempts to complete a film.
Reading some hate on this movie, and IMO it's because it's poking fun at the industry and hitting a little close to home (much like "Don't Look Up"). I thought it was a great satire, although there were times that it beat a point to death or went over the top to make a point (as Apatow often does). Overall, I laughed my arse off. Inane, yet smart, at the same time. It's worth watching for sure, but YMMV.

Just saw an ad for the movie "Ambulance" directed by Michael Bay. This looks like it could be the most Michael Bay-est movie ever created. JFC, it looks horrible.

Ambulance? Sounds like a movie they'd make in the 70's in between Air Terminal and Bus Station starring Earnest Borgnine and Anette Funicello.

There's a reason Bay keeps doing what he does, and it's the same reason studios keep hiring him to do it. It is summed up well in this rap battle. (Which he totally wins )

Michael Bay movies are the equivalent to "Ow My Balls!" or whatever it was in "Idiocracy."
I do love me some mindless action movies once in a while, but they are mostly within SOME sort of reason. Twisted, maybe. Exaggerated, maybe. But Bay just takes it SO far....I mean, the Taken series is darn near a documentary compared to Bay movies.

Bullitt, (HBO Max):
sat through a lot of BS to get to the meat of the plot.
Many older movies have a lot of dialogue and acting.
By the way, McQueen's original Bullitt Mustang was auctioned for $3,400,000 in 2020.

At least one person accepts responsibility for consuming the slop so many have slurped up. ?
The Bad Boys movies (the first two, I haven't seen the third) are super fun (I did not know Michael Bay did Bad Boys and Bad Boys II until yesterday). The Rock is really enjoyable. The first couple Transformers movies are enjoyable enough. Armageddon was decent enough.
Michael Bay was (1 of 9) executive producers of Black Sails…so he’s got that going for him ??

13 hours, Pain & Gain, Coyote Ugly are all good IMHO & while the romance aspect of Pearl Harbor was way over the top & fizzled…the battle scenes were really good, especially based on the computer technology (ala) of 21 years ago!
Transformers was horrible. Coyote Ugly was a great bad movie (IMO, kind of a female Road House).
Beirut (Netflix streaming):
Caught in the crossfires of civil war, CIA operatives must send a former U.S. diplomat to negotiate for the life of a friend he left behind.
The summary leaves one little detail out: the former diplomat is a burnout (certain events affected him, and he became a boozehound). That is key to the plot. That being said, pretty good movie, some action, some suspense, there is some cheese in the dialogue in the middle of the movie, but doesn't really cross that line, and it recovers nicely. I will say Jon Hamm has had trouble breaking out of him playing Don Draper-like roles. That kind of hard-nosed a-hole that drinks and/or is a bit arrogant. I don't know if that's by choice or not, but...

The first Transformers was far from horrible and is one of those movies if it's on we watch it without fail.
Rurouni Kenshin (Netflix streaming):
A former assassin who has resolved to never kill again has his vow sorely tested in the late 1800s.
Subtitles, so beware. A super bad-ass assassin retires after a war changes Japan's regime. However, he still vows to protect people, but no killing. Delves deep into honor, fate, etc. Love the story, the action, the resilience of the main character. Check it out.

Agreed. One and three were actually pretty good movies. The rest of them? Not so much. Two was so bad I didn't think they could make one worse, but they sure tried a few times.
Trust No One: The Hunt For the Crypto King (Netflix streaming):
A group of investors turned sleuths as they try to unlock the suspicious death of cryptocurrency multimillionaire Gerry Cotten and the missing $250 million they believe he stole from them.
What a web to crawl into. JFC. I *love* how the "internet sleuths" just assumed that people showing up in the chats were who they say they were. On the flipside, the forensic accountants turned up quite a bit. An amazing story, to say the least. I have no idea what is the truth, just some ideas, and I think that is the point of this documentary. No. One. Knows.
Incredible.

The Rental (Netflix streaming):
Two couples rent a vacation home for what should be a celebratory weekend get-away. (editor's note: SHOULD)
Kind of a run of the mill horror movie, but not a gore-fest, which I appreciated. It's all mental social things, playing one character off of another, etc, until the ending. I found this one worth watching, if only to see if the main villain gets away with it or not, or if there's a hero at the end. While some of the standards of horror movies do show up, there's enough creativity to make it worth a watch.

Metal Lords (Netflix streaming):
Two friends try to form a heavy metal band with a cellist for a Battle of the Bands.
A coming of age movie, along with a bit of an underdog/outcast element. Some cliches pop up, sure, that is to be expected. The general story arc is predictable, but it's a fun ride. It is even more fun if you are a fan of metal genre. Some self-deprecation, a major obvious reference with the cellist, if you know the metal genre, and a couple of cameos tossed in for good measure.
A good use of 90~ minutes, if you ask me.
