My senior year in high school we took a spring break European history trip. Started at St. Petersburg, went to Moscow, Warsaw, Krakow, and then Prague. While in Prague, our group was getting cold so the group stopped at a small coffee shop. Inside was a family speaking English. We started talking and found out they were from St. Louis Park. Even weirder, the son played hockey for Breck. A team our high school just lost to in the state tournament a week prior (Blake Wheeler’s team). A guy in our group played for our school as well. A week earlier they were on the ice together and unbeknownst to them, they’d meet halfway across the world.

I’ve shared this story hear before but it bears repeating.

3-4 summers ago my wife and I drove from Twin Cities to Eastern Tennessee for a family reunion. Since we were in no real hurry we drove from here to St. Louis. St. Louis to Nashville and Nashville to Pigeon Forge, TN. On the way from Nashville to Pigeon Forge we decide to stop in Knoxville so I can visit the University of Tennessee campus bookstore and pick up some college garb. Who do I end up running into at the store In Knoxville but @@Greyeagle. As god as our witnesses, neither of us knew the other one was going to be there. It was just a spur of the moment thing my wife and I decided to do.

Truly an awesome spectacle!!

TN.jpg

One of Mrs. GE's good friends from high school has a place on Norris Lake in TN and we were there for a week. Her husband needed to fly out for biz and they only had one car at their summer place. Instead of her getting up at 4:30AM to drive him to the airport he drove down, parked their car, and we went later so she could drive it back. We roamed around Knoxville and drove around the campus a bit before grabbing their car at the airport. I wanted to see Neyland Stadium so parked and ended up in the shop at the same time Zwak happened to be there. The odds are almost impossible to calculate.

We were able to sneak into the stadium itself, it's amazing!

In the 90's, I was in Texas for a corporate operations review. Flying home, I had a layover in Memphis. Lo and behold, my brother walks on the plane and sits a row behind me. We did some trading and sat together. There are a 'near' tragic ending to the story. There are a fair amount of wind and lightning as we were landing. As we deplaned, we could hear tornado sirens blaring!

Ran into some friends at Pike’s market in Seattle. Then the next day ran into some of our son’s friends at Safeco Field.

The Twins were in town so that increased the odds and I think the phrase it’s a small world did come up.

Tim at least had the good sense to wear a Twins shirt!

The day before my Gopher hockey hat blew off while boating and is still somewhere in Norris Lake. :ahhh:

I always wear Gopher hat and shirt when we travel. It's a conversation starter. We were at Arches Nat'l Park when a lady came up to me and asked me what part of Minnesota I was from. Then she said her daughter married a guy from that area. Turns out the lady was my next door neighbor's Mother in Law.

My parents had a similar thing happen to them at the Pittsburgh frozen four. A little old lady asked them what part of MN they were from, and eventually realized that they were talking to the neighbor who's window I broke with a baseball 20-25 years prior. They thought she looked familiar but couldn't place it. Had a good laugh.

Travel: went to a wedding with MNS and (USCHOer) Beer Pong Horn, in Traverse City MI. Made it a two day trip. On the way back, stopped overnight in Escanaba. Looking for places to have breakfast, found an Embers-type place...BPH said, wait, hold on, we're going HERE. Place called Rosie's Diner. Held MAYBE 40 people at best. Mom and her daughter ran the place, we were the only ones in there, had a nice conversation. Mom (Rosie) made us sign the guestbook. Not joking, people from around the world signed this thing. During our convo, found out that "Escanaba In Da Moonlight" (starring Jeff Daniels) was partially shot on that street/from her diner. (PS: the movie was great for the first half, sucked the second half; if you ever wanna know about Da U.P. ......)

Quote of the day on that visit, MNS didn't finish his meal. Rosie bellies up to him, stares him down, points at me, and says, "That skinny ass finished his meal. What's your excuse?!" I will never forget that place. Such a great road trip story.

The other story was Denver F4 '08. A couple longtime posters on USCHO and I shared a hotel room, therefore took the light rail together. One other guy was in our car, asked why we were there. Told him, and then he asked, "Have you guys heard of a website called USCHO?" We all laughed, and intro'd him as our screen names (FTR, it was con1977, me, and Bakunin/Santa Lucia/*hat/whatever other name he used over the years). The look on that other guy's face was priceless (he was FightingSioux23).

Red Velvet. The one Target used to sell was really good but I haven’t seen it in a long time.

I didn’t share a travel story yesterday. We were in Cairo and went with another couple to a tailor because one of them wanted to see about buying clothes. We stopped at a pharmacy along the way and as my wife and I waited outside a guy came out of the shop next door. He started asking where in the US we are from. It was clear he was trying to sell us something but I said Minnesota to be friendly.

He starts going into this speech about how he loves MN etc and I was looking for a way to leave Since it seemed he was just trying to get us in his shop. He then said his wife was from Green Bay and then told me about how he used to frequent Billy’s on Grand since he lived a couple blocks from there. Then he reaches into his wallet and pulls out his MN Drivers License that he still carried.

We’ve seen a lot of crazy and interesting things (like a dog with a helmet on riding on the back of a moped in Thailand) but this has to be the craziest coincidence in our travels.

Isn’t Red Velvet just chocolate? Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Or at least flavored with cocoa, I guess I always thought it was gussied up chocolate :dup:

It's your last meal, ever. I do mean ever, if you catch my drift. What would it be?

Mine: Prime rib, med rare, grilled. Corn on the cob, also grilled. Green beans. Garlic mashed potatoes. Pappy Van Winkle 15 (IMO, the best of the Pappys) w/dinner. Schramm's Raspberry mead paired with chocolate cheesecake topped with raspberries for dessert. And then a fine cigar and a Balvenie 50 for the finale.

Chocolate and Buttermilk plus a few other things I believe. It doesn’t taste like regular chocolate though

By grilled do you mean grill the whole rib roast or just a rib eye steak?

Paella from the beach bar in Barcelona (I cant remember the name) I was at in 2013 with a bunch of cold beers. If you’ve never had paella it might be the most delicious thing on this earth.

It’s not really a “ meal” but I would gorge myself with foie gras on toast points and icy champagne.

Foie gras ravioli in the south of France was one of the most delicious things I’ve ever eaten.

Favorite ice cream: salted caramel

Last meal: Thai larb gai salad from the original King & I, lamb masala from our local Rasoi, filet mignon and lobster mac & cheese from Capital Grille with a bottle of 1998 Chateau St. Jean Cabernet Sauvingon, a cheese plate with Ramos Pinto 30-year tawny port, finished with a cigar and as many bottles of Surley Smoke I can handle until I'm dead.

Kemp’s French Silk Pie. It was one of the flavors they had the resort on Pike Bay when I was a kid. 1 scoop sugar come for 80¢ and a double scoop for $1.20. Since then the pie has become my favorite too. Unfortunately they don’t serve ice cream anymore. The minute that place goes up for sale, I am buying it just for the ice cream.

Best or earliest memory from the old Mariucci Arena either from a game or otherwise.

Mine was my first game when the band came through the lower level playing the rouser. So loud and so awesome it sent shivers. I really loved that building, crappy sightlines and all.

Russian Tea. Giant Cookies.

Sound of the ice chillers in the concourse.

Stepping into the arena and cramping into the wooden benches.

Seeing no glass separating us in the crowd from the opposing bench.

Hearing the stomping of player skates up the steps leading to the locker rooms.

That place was awesome.
