This is the Whioux 4th portal goalie in a row--- Semptimphelter, Persson, DeRidder, Driscoll.
I'm 50% factual and 50% sarcastic. When you get to know me, you will know which is which.
Scott Sandelin went off on the transfer portal today and it appears that he may be taking a shot not only at the players but also UND / MN / WIS based on reading the full article.

Ciskie was the interviewer, so it wouldn’t surprise me if a little editorializing made it seem like more of a shot than it really was.

The funny thing is that the Gophers really have not been active in the portal at all most years. He is also for allowing CHL players to play in the NCAA.

13 GoCats in the portal now. How do you even field a team? Bring in nearly all of the guys from the Alaska programs that are on the move?
What's a gocat?

Viking Gustafsson Nyberg?
Maybe not ever, but definitely the best one I’ve seen this morning.

I am thinking born in Alabama with that name LOL
Clearly he’s Korean.
What the hell is he talking about. Is he bitter that we brought in Michel?

I didn't see MINN specifically referenced in any of his comments. Maybe he inferred it? Because yeah the Gophers haven't lit the portal world on fire for incoming players.

Sandy didn't name Mn by name, but our Gopher hating friend Ciskie included the X post in his article speculating that Wood chose a school (MN) before he was even in the portal. Other than Cruikshank, the Gophers really have not used the portal, as Laffer sat out a year before he went from Michigan to the Gophers. But, anytime Ciskie can take a shot at the Gophers, he does.

In short Sandy doesn't like the portal and Bruce was able to make himself part of the story.

Bingo. I said as such in the other thread this was posted. There was a bit of editorializing done to make Sandy’s comments fit this particular “journalist's” narrative.

A new world record was set for the use of "asinine" in one article. I call that synergy.

Charlie Stramel officially in the portal.
I'm curious what people are seeing in Stramel's game to think that he'd be a good add to the Gophers? It seems he has had a hard time establishing himself as an above average player at this level.
Russo's article on Stramel

I think a big part of it is that Hastings' system is fairly restrictive and structured. If guys aren't on board with doing what they're supposed to do out there, then they don't play.
Stramel potentially staying in the Big 10.

The word on the street is Stramel has below average practice work ethics. Counter to Hastings style of practice which is to run you into the ground as a dictator.
I am the official Iowa Hawkeye football fan of GPL!
Russo speculates that Michigan St would be a good fit for Stramel because of the Nightingale connection. I would say that makes sense or Ohio State where they lost 3 centers after this past year.

So with all the court decisions about college athletes deserving a piece of the pie and being allowed to collect NIL money, is there a school limit on how many Scholies can be handed out? Is there still a limit of 17, or something? Seems like schools should at least be able to do 20, and why not more? Might limit some of the 4-year type guys from jumping in the portal if main goal is an education.

Schools are still limited by the NCAA to 18 full scholarship equivalents. You don't have to use all 18, and you can split them up too. Courts have said the NCAA can make rules that relate to on-field activities, and scholarship limits are not being questioned.
Schools are NOT permitted to directly engage in NIL activities, but may work with NIL agencies provided the school is not directly coordinating such activities, nor can a school "hire" an athlete to engage in NIL. Where we see much of the confusion is how much coordination is permissible for a school to undertake-- at some point, if a school is immediately directing, say, DTA dollars, then DTA is a part of the school, which brings up more regulatory problems*.
(* University of Oregon is being challenged currently that their collective is subject to Title IX on this theory currently. If successful, the challenge could have MAJOR implications for collectives and schools alike).
Hastings plays a garbage brand of hockey. The problem is that Stramel should be great at playing that style.I'm curious what people are seeing in Stramel's game to think that he'd be a good add to the Gophers? I got that much but it just seemed like a post was missing...maybe not.
It sounds like nothing was deleted, but I had the same reaction as you at I think the same spot that it felt like something had gone missing.
@slap-shot in Bruce’s article, he references a Twitter post where a candidate not in the portal is considering Mn, UND, and Wis.
combined with the fact that Sandelin said “the monsters have their kingdom they live in and they are getting the best players.” You can read between the line kingdom probably means the big bluebloods.
Yeah. Sandy had it pretty bad up there this past decade. A couple down years and it’s someone else’s fault of course.
That being said, I’m not a fan of the transfer portal or NIL.
@slap-shot in Bruce’s article, he references a Twitter post where a candidate not in the portal is considering Mn, UND, and Wis.
I saw that but imho it was a fairly innocuous reference, never mind Minnesota has barely used the portal compared with several other programs.

The response to him should be, "Then get better. Be a destination." No long-time college sports fan likes the portal. But it is here and not going anywhere, and you can either sit and pout about it or adapt.
The world didn't stop with UMD winning a title or two-- it gave them a target on their backs. Everyone else evolved and adapted, and now UMD needs to as well.
If portal folks aren't sticking with him or the NCHC in general, what does that say about him or the NCHC?
Perhaps that is what is really behind his frustration.

As Hastings showed in Mankato, the system can work with the right players. But that system also seemed to be a fantastic fit for a Mankato type of program where the very high end young talents are unlikely to go.
Wisconsin can attract the high end young kids that Mankato can't... but are those kinds of recruits going to want to play in a system that doesn't encourage creativity, etc.?
This is the same dilemma that eventually sunk Mike Eaves at Wisconsin. Top recruits didn't want to play in his system and the fans there grew disenchanted over time because those top recruits kept going to other places (and the results followed). We'll see how it works out for Hastings but it could be a bit of déjà vu.

Honestly, it is just the same coach speak we have seen for years. Anything that benefits "me" I like (or don't complain about), anything that hurts "me" I dislike and complain about. Coaches don't complain about things that they benefit from. If Sandy was reaping the rewards here, let's not kid ourselves and think he would be speaking out against it.
For instance, the coaches who valued the "gentleman's agreement" in recruiting were mainly the coaches at less prestigious programs who feared a more prestigious program would come along and grab a top kid from them at a later date. The agreement was simply to lock out those more prestigious schools if a kid was convinced to make a decision at age 16 (often times their offer had a decision date attached to it to add to the pressure on a kid). Never mind that these 16 year olds didn't know all of the options they may have. What matters is "me" (the head coach at these less prestigious schools). It never was a benefit to the recruits (who could get dropped later on if needed). It only benefited a certain segment of head coaches at certain programs.
PS - I actually loathe what college sports has become with the NIL, transfer portal, etc. Occasionally it benefits Gopher sports and occasionally it hurts it. But it has sapped away a lot of the enjoyment I used to have for college sports. I will always cheer for Gophers sports teams but the college level has lost its luster for me.
We'll see how it works out for Hastings but it could be a bit of déjà vu.
I think that may be what is behind Whitelaw and Stramel moving on from Becky. Current players and recruitment were the questions that many Mav fans had about Hastings moving to Wisconsin. Would both of those groups fit into his "system" or adapt to his system, or would they move on? Clearly you saw the results with Stramel with the lack of top line minutes and production, now he is moving on. One year is still too early too tell how Hastings system is working there but you can see some similarities to Mankato though.

Bruce is nothing more than a fan masquerading as a 'journalist'
His current 'woe is me' schtick following the arrogance UMD fans had from 2011-2020 is ridiculous. You cannot always be the victim...

He can complain, but the reality is he was poised after 2018-2020 span of championship level teams to have a decade of enhanced recruiting reach, and hasn't even come close to capitalizing, in fact U you make an argument their recruiting has taken steps backwards, that's not so much on the players... it's on the HC & his assistants. They had a legitimate chance to do something historic- a 3 peat (before Covid ended that run). With success comes the need to evolve regarding managing relations with recruits & players…and now…they’ve missed making the NCAA tourney for two years & counting…time to look in the mirror regarding the tailspin since 2021-2022.@slap-shot in Bruce’s article, he references a Twitter post where a candidate not in the portal is considering Mn, UND, and Wis.

No surprise but Schloss says Stramel is likely headed to Michigan State
@slap-shot sandy probably has to toe the line publicly to avoid poking programs and coaches directly he has relationships with. What sandelin can do is give more tidbits “off camera” to guide Ciskie. The random player Ciskie pointed out in Twitter could easily be Scott saying “this is an example put this in your article.” I doubt ciskie has time to track all these transfers but sandelin would know by his coaches work on all of them.
I do think you have to read between the lines on this stuff. Bruce can be a mouthpiece for sandy and knows his role. And Scott needs to be careful in what he says in a quote. So they help eachother.
@bearpaw28 agree the assistant coach that went to western seemed to be huge in getting good players. His assistants now are clearly not getting the right guys.
Kukkonen to Wisconsin.
Then Hastings would be better off not recruiting top end players. Just stick to the 23 year old Freshman that has always worked for him.I think a big part of it is that Hastings' system is fairly restrictive and structured. If guys aren't on board with doing what they're supposed to do out there, then they don't play.
