I still have to say one of the better Don Lucia stories I heard was he was getting it at some, I think it was North Dakota, where the fans are giving it to him, and they're saying like, how is your kid on the power play?
0:25
He's terrible.
0:26
It's like, how do you even get that spot?
0:28
And Don turns around and goes, I sleep with his mother.
0:37
Leo, how was your recruiting?
0:39
I mean, you, I mean...
0:41
My recruiting, I probably had 70, 61 offers.
0:48
Now, here's Jupiter and Vego.
1:03
Good evening, and welcome to The GPL Podcast, episode number 279.
1:11
Well, Veegs, not quite the weekend we imagined, but it wasn't terrible.
1:20
Not terrible.
1:21
You know, they got the win, and then they got to overtime.
1:24
Three on three, not Bob Botsko's favorite style of hockey.
1:28
And neither was the officiating during the third period either.
1:31
So, the officiating wasn't good.
1:34
I listened to the radio broadcast.
1:36
Wally wasn't happy about it.
1:38
I listened to the TV broadcast.
1:39
I know Pat wasn't too happy about it either.
1:43
So, let's bring Pat in here, because what happened?
1:49
Pat, there you are.
1:51
Referring was not great this weekend.
1:54
Great, great to see both of you, as always.
1:58
Yeah.
1:59
What happened?
2:00
Well, when you don't win draws, especially in your own end, and you don't possess the puck, you're chasing.
2:10
I said to my broadcast partner, Jim Rich, I said, right at the start of overtime, you better win this draw, because if you don't, you will not have the puck.
2:23
What did we see?
2:24
Minnesota touched the puck once and then turned it over, and they made a great play, and game over.
2:31
They did have one faceoff where they could have, you know, about halfway through what was played.
2:35
They did lose that faceoff.
2:38
Yep.
2:41
And I was saying that to some people, yes, the refereeing for the last 10 minutes of the game, last third period in overtime was not great, but win a faceoff.
2:48
Come on.
2:50
And I think there's times on the three-on-three where you have to take, you know, I mean, you got to know the situation, obviously.
2:59
But when you have a chance, especially when a guy is facing the boards, you have to go.
3:06
I mean, you have to get closer.
3:08
You can't just let them, you know, oh, we're going to get it out of the zone.
3:12
You've got to force at some point or else nothing's going to happen.
3:17
Yeah.
3:17
You can't really play, you can't really play a zone, can you V?
3:20
So you kind of have to play it kind of a little closer to one-on-one if you want to get the puck back.
3:24
Well, it is man-to-man defense, but I do think you have to identify situations where you still have teammates between you and the net.
3:32
You can take that chance and you can maybe give up like that three-on-two opportunity.
3:37
But you've got to take that chance when you have someone outside the dots and they're turning towards the boards and you know, there's multiple layers of players that can help you.
3:47
That's when you got to take that chance and the Gophers have some players who are pretty good defenders.
3:52
Yeah, and they win that battle.
3:55
And great sticks.
3:56
But what upset me the most about the game was, you know, I'll go back to some of the face-offs.
4:06
And it just, it bothers me when they lose so many and you give the team that one extra opportunity, that one chance.
4:16
You know, but it was two or three.
4:18
I think it was at the end of the game, right?
4:21
When, you know, they won two draws in a row and didn't score.
4:29
Thank God.
4:30
But, you know, you've got to be better.
4:32
You've got to be better on that.
4:33
And that's, you know, if I have one concern.
4:35
Now, if you look at the numbers throughout the game, you know, pretty even on the draws.
4:40
I think they're really close to 50-50, but it's situational.
4:43
So situational.
4:45
Yeah.
4:45
You can't look at it like, in my opinion, can't look at it, you know, where are they, where are they winning them?
4:50
Where are they losing them?
4:51
How much time is on the clock?
4:52
You know, are you up a goal?
4:53
Are you down a goal?
4:55
You know, what are you, what are you doing?
4:57
And so, you know, that, that part of their game bothered me the most all weekend.
5:04
Well, and Bob has called out a specifically impality kill situations.
5:08
His team is not very good on the draw.
5:11
No.
5:11
And so I think it's just amplified when you've got one less player to jump for that loose puck.
5:18
They're not able to execute there.
5:19
I think the numbers are like 40% were on their kill.
5:23
Whereas when they're power play, when they have that extra guy out there to win those loose 50-50s off the draw, they're like 60%.
5:29
So it's a big difference for Minnesota.
5:31
You know, and a big thing for me, guys, and I always used to do this when I took draws, is that I would learn, I would know who I'm going up against, what his strengths are, what he's trying to do, and then counter that somehow.
5:49
If I know a guy is quicker than me, well, automatically, I'm not going for the win, I'm going for the tie.
5:57
So I'm going to tie him up.
5:59
If I know a guy is going to, I look where his stick is, and if it's positioned a little left, well, you know what?
6:06
I'm going to back, I'm going to slap that stick to the right, to my right, and then get the puck.
6:14
You know, I mean, so there's more to it than just going in there and trying to want to, you know, you got to know who you're up against, what they do and how they do it.
6:25
If you want to be a good face-off guy.
6:29
So at overtime loss, that Saturday night, but on Friday night, a completely different thing, especially when you look at the first period, they get down by one goal, they score five straight and pretty much take care of the game right there in the first period.
6:45
Pretty amazing period by the Gophers.
6:49
Like they were scoring goals in the ways you have to score goals.
6:53
Players making plays in the net and just lots of confidence, getting the space and converting and bearing.
7:01
Like there's no squeezing the carbon fiber too tight on Friday night.
7:06
They came through and delivered.
7:07
And I think so many Gopher fans are like, there, that's Gopher Hockey, right there.
7:12
Why can't they do this every single night?
7:15
Yeah, I, and again, my opinion, I thought it was the best period of the season of any team in college hockey.
7:27
Now, you can look back at the Michigan game.
7:29
That first period was really good too, when they were up 3-0.
7:32
But I thought it was good because every line was involved.
7:37
I mean, Beckett Hendrickson was a freaking beast down low.
7:41
In that first period.
7:42
And I can go on and on and name the guys.
7:45
The D were getting involved in the offense, in the offensive zone.
7:50
When they are moving like that, that's when you know they were, that they're going.
7:56
Because their feet are moving and they're covering up and they're cycling, they're cycling on top, they're cycling down low.
8:03
And when you do that, you get teams looking around like, where do I go?
8:09
Who do I get?
8:10
Who do I cover?
8:11
And then what happens?
8:14
They're standing.
8:16
And so you make them look even worse.
8:18
And so I just thought Minnesota, I mean, I thought they were just, it was textbook in that first period.
8:26
And Veegs, not only do I think it was the best period of the season so far, it was also the best period on how they reacted to being negative.
8:36
Obviously, they gave up the goal real quick.
8:38
It was one nothing.
8:40
They responded instantly and the rest of the period, it was over.
8:45
It almost feels sometimes like this team, when they get prodded like that, they jump into action.
8:51
Poke the bear, yep.
8:53
If they get poked, they get excited.
8:55
They're like, okay, now we got to bring the game to them.
8:59
We got to be on our toes.
9:00
We got to anticipate.
9:01
It's some of the other games where it's kind of like a boring game, 10 minutes of hockey, where this team kind of has checked out at times.
9:10
They're just like, we got to dump and chase tonight.
9:13
Oh, we got to go do puck retrievals.
9:15
Oh, they're going to trap us.
9:17
Oh, you know, I've spent 20 seconds defending.
9:19
My shift's over.
9:21
Maybe I'm going to extend my shift chasing offense.
9:24
But when they get poked, they're right into it.
9:26
And that's what irritated me about the Friday night game against Ohio State.
9:32
It ended up being a 5-1 game.
9:35
And it wasn't a 5-1 game.
9:37
I mean, Minnesota, you know, they take a penalty on the 5-minute major, which goes back to what you're saying, kind of, you know, you know, checked out, whatever.
9:48
You don't do that.
9:50
But then they give up two on the 5-minute major they took.
9:55
And the 5-minute major they took was at the beginning of the third period.
9:59
Okay?
10:01
And it was a bad penalty and it was a good call.
10:05
But when they started the period, they got, they won the draw, they got it in the zone.
10:11
I'm like, okay, you know, it's two nothing.
10:15
They get one here.
10:18
They got a chance.
10:20
And once that penalty happened, you know, it was over.
10:24
But so what I'm saying is, you know, you avoid that.
10:28
You know, then you, then you might have Ohio State back on their heels.
10:34
Well, you know, you talk about the penalty kill.
10:36
And obviously that five minute major in the Ohio State Series just killed them.
10:39
Yeah.
10:40
But this past weekend, Veegs, they went three for three, killing penalties.
10:45
For one thing, they only gave up three power plays the entire weekend.
10:50
And a lot of speculations, you know, you know, I saw Gopher GameStats put out stats about how much better they are on the penalty kill when Thomas is playing.
11:00
And look who returned this past weekend.
11:03
Mr.
11:03
Thomas.
11:05
The one thing I noticed that was a little bit different with Cal Thomas in the lineup on the penalty kill is more shot blocks and more missed nets.
11:15
And so I think when he's in the lineup, he forces shooters to shoot anywhere other than on goal.
11:22
So there's something about that discipline and that courage that he brings to the lineup that changes the way the Gophers can kill.
11:29
Because I didn't notice them pressure more in the neutral zone and delay entries.
11:34
I didn't notice them pressure players at handoffs at the top of the zone.
11:39
It looks like more just that tight structure, blocking shots, forcing pucks to miss the net.
11:45
And I watched you guys last week.
11:49
I don't miss an episode, but you were talking about the penalty kill last week.
11:54
And I wanted to call in and chime in.
11:56
But you know.
11:57
Well, you got the link now.
11:58
You can use the same link and come on anytime you want.
12:04
There's so many things that go in and you guys know this, into a penalty kill, right?
12:09
I mean, number one for me is win the draw on your own end.
12:13
Okay.
12:14
But number two, once you win the draw, you got to make the clear.
12:17
And they've been poor at making the clears when they have control of the pucks.
12:22
And so what do you do?
12:23
You give a team another chance.
12:25
Your goal-tending has got to be good, right?
12:28
You got to get in front of shots.
12:30
You got to know when to pressure.
12:32
So people ask, well, what's wrong with their penalty kill?
12:35
Well, probably this tonight and probably that another night.
12:41
And so I just think it's a combination of things.
12:46
If you have a breakdown, whatever that breakdown is, good chance you're going to get scored on.
12:53
Well, you remember Veegs, Jack Ramsey was saying that when he played, he had the same partner for four years on penalty kills.
13:01
The familiarity with who you're playing with was huge.
13:08
Yeah.
13:08
When I talked to Mason Nevers about the penalty kill, that was one of the things he called out is having so many guys hurt, not being able to practice very efficiently because of the limited numbers.
13:20
You know, they haven't been as clean on their reads and reading their teammates, and that's been an issue.
13:27
And he thought, you know, maybe now that everyone's healthy, they can practice a little bit more consistently and maybe have the same partners for forward pairs.
13:35
That'll help their penalty kill unit.
13:37
And, you know, just like Pat said, you know, getting clears, winning draws, that's important.
13:43
But I think the continuity should help them going forward.
13:47
I'll tell you a quick story back.
13:49
And I hate to go back to the days when I was playing, because that was years and years ago.
13:53
But Paul Broughton and I used to be partners.
13:56
And we always, our whole thought process was, okay, yeah, we're not, we don't want them to score.
14:05
But our mindset was, we're going to score.
14:08
We're going to score shorthanded.
14:10
And so we always had it, that whenever we got the puck, one of the guys would go right to the middle of the ice, and you would throw it there.
14:21
And then you'd go in on your break while you'd catch them.
14:23
And the D knew, the D knew, hey, we got it, we got a clean shot at it.
14:29
That's what we're doing.
14:30
It wasn't just get the puck out of the zone.
14:33
Let's try to make something happen.
14:36
And, you know, it was a fun way to go about killing a penalty.
14:42
I see Steve.
14:43
There was some tweets earlier about goaltending, but we got Steve here right live.
14:47
Pat's thoughts on goaltending going forward.
14:51
Personally, Pat, I don't think Bob's ready to make that decision because I don't think either of the goalies have really leapt out, you know.
15:00
You know, Aerie might play one way, but it seems like the team plays different in front of them compared to Sue the Air.
15:04
So I think it's still quite a bit up in the air.
15:07
Yeah, I think that I don't have any information other than the fact that I think they're just going to continue to split.
15:15
There was only one time this year where Bob decided to go with Aerie both nights, and I think when it gets down to that point, it's going to be a gut decision, how he's feeling that day, and that's how it will go.
15:33
Listen, I think both are playing well.
15:34
I really do.
15:35
No, yeah, they are different.
15:38
Sue Le Air is fabulous with the puck, by the way.
15:41
Handles the puck terrifically, really helps out the D, you know, and so it is different, right?
15:49
But again, Notre Dame had five shots on goal in the first period, right?
15:57
Minnesota was clean.
15:59
They got back.
16:00
They moved the puck.
16:01
They were sharp.
16:02
And you know what?
16:04
Their goalie didn't really get tested.
16:07
And so when they're on their game, and you know, they're having the clean breakouts and all that stuff, and they're possessing the puck, you know, you're in pretty good shape.
16:17
I'm not worried about the goaltending.
16:19
What do you think, Veegs?
16:20
We've talked about it a lot.
16:23
Well, it was funny because this last weekend, you know, one night you're saying, I really think they got to go with Souleir.
16:28
And then the next day you go, oh, maybe not.
16:30
You know, I was texting that to you.
16:32
You weren't the only one.
16:34
I think there's a lot of Gopher fans out there who wish it was more clear who was the number one goalie.
16:38
But I think both are just playing fine right now.
16:41
And I think, you know, Bob has always said, you know, I pick starters, but I don't pick number one goalies.
16:48
They pick themselves.
16:49
I don't think either has really defined themselves as a number one goalie.
16:53
They both had good games.
16:54
They both had average games.
16:55
I don't know how many bad games we've seen out of either goalie this year.
17:00
So how many losses do the Gophers have?
17:04
Four, five?
17:05
I think it's five, and three of them are an OT.
17:08
Yeah, so that's pretty easy.
17:14
Are there percentages over 90%?
17:19
Yes.
17:21
Okay.
17:24
How many goals would you look back and say?
17:28
Oh, what a bad goal.
17:30
You know, I would say that Notre Dame game where Aries played a little...
17:36
Oh yeah.
17:37
Hold on, hold on.
17:38
But he will shake it first.
17:40
But then, and then Veegs even has said this in the past.
17:43
Bob put him in the second night just to see how he would react, to see how he would react to you.
17:48
Kind of having a bad start to a game.
17:50
How does he react the next game?
17:51
So that's really the only one that kind of started out bad.
17:55
Wouldn't you say, Pat?
17:56
His first loss of the year was against Ohio State.
18:01
He was the only undefeated goalie in the country.
18:04
And people want his head.
18:06
I don't get it.
18:07
Yeah, you've been tweeting it.
18:08
People have said, even after the one loss, you're like, he has one loss.
18:12
He's nine and one.
18:13
But I understand, like when analyzing this team, even when I'm doing games, you can nitpick every shift, right?
18:23
Yes.
18:24
You can nitpick and say, oh, why did he make that play?
18:27
Why did he do this play?
18:28
You know, I'm talking about anybody.
18:30
And, oh, he should have done this.
18:31
Oh, what's he thinking?
18:33
But, you know, the bar is pretty high and you have to, you have to look to find a lot of egregious mistakes that they make.
18:43
And they're going to make them.
18:45
And guess what?
18:46
They're probably going to lose again.
18:48
And guess what?
18:49
You know, their goal is probably going to have to steal one one night.
18:54
And that's where we are.
18:55
That's why it's so great, right?
18:57
Veegs, I think it's less about the goal-tending, maybe, than the team in front of it, not playing as consistently as we would like them to play.
19:09
Pat wants to jump in on this one so bad, I can tell.
19:11
I'm thinking so.
19:12
Hold on.
19:13
Go ahead, Veegs.
19:15
Well, I just think it's it's college hockey.
19:17
Like, you're not going to be at 100 percent an entire season.
19:20
You go into an empty Ohio State building and you got to play at four o'clock.
19:26
That your fans may say you should be able to get for any game.
19:29
That's a hard game that where you got to bring your own juice and get going against an older, physical, good skating team that's at home.
19:37
That doesn't have to worry about all that stuff.
19:38
And it's used to playing in that building.
19:40
You know, you play for Minnesota.
19:42
You're usually going to get good games from every team.
19:44
You think those Notre Dame players didn't want to bring it on Saturday.
19:48
They had a huge crowd of family and friends in the building and they got showing up on Friday.
19:55
You're going to have those ups and downs in College Hockey.
19:57
And as frustrating as it is for the fans, it's not a surprise to any of us that have watched it for a long time.
20:03
Go back to, well, there's a couple of games I can go back to, but I'll use the Michigan State game, the game they lost, up 3-1.
20:11
Oh yeah, tired, we're all tired, right?
20:15
And you do get tired, but whatever.
20:18
But when you have the puck on your stick, and you have an easy clear, and you don't clear it, and they keep the puck in the zone for another 30 seconds, and you really get tired, well, they're going to score.
20:32
Happened twice.
20:34
It happened in another game.
20:40
And the, oh, I lost my brain for a second.
20:45
You know, those are the things that you can't do later on in the year.
20:50
Okay.
20:51
And but so, you know, a lot of the mistakes or losses are due to not the other team, but what we, what this team is down.
21:06
Yes, I would agree with that.
21:08
I definitely agree with that.
21:10
Veegs, any thoughts on the refereeing in the third period on Saturday?
21:15
I think as players, they have to recognize what's happening during the game and adjust and play through it because I saw players every once in a while, like they get hooked or they get held and you could just see them kind of give up and look up or put their hands up in the air.
21:33
You have to learn that sometimes you're not going to get any calls and you have to play through it and you have to play tougher.
21:40
And again, they put themselves in a 3-3 game.
21:43
The refs didn't do that.
21:46
You've got to play well enough that you don't leave it to chance for the officials.
21:51
And at the end of the game, you can't have that attitude.
21:54
It's wasted energy.
21:56
You had control to score more goals.
21:59
You have control to not give up so many goals.
22:03
I understand that fans are frustrated and the coaches are frustrated and Pat's frustrated and Wally's frustrated.
22:09
But the reality is you just need to score more goals.
22:16
To your point, Veegs, and I'll just say what you said, you have to recognize early in the game what the official, what his mindset is, right?
22:27
Especially if one is let go early in the game, right?
22:31
Well, then this guy's not calling, let everybody on the bench know, let's play, let's play through it and let's go.
22:37
You know, so much of this game, guys, is right up here, right up here.
22:44
Knowing how much time is on the clock, knowing the situation, knowing how the rest are calling the game.
22:50
You know, knowing that their goalie is going down a lot, so let's go high.
22:56
Whatever the case may be.
22:57
You know, you got to think your way through this a little bit.
23:00
And instead of just, oh, it's our shift.
23:02
We go.
23:03
It's our shift.
23:04
We go.
23:04
You know, and you got to understand, you got to find that something, that little extra that is going to get you to the point that's going to lead you to win.
23:16
And I also think on the flip side, you have to go.
23:18
He's not calling things.
23:19
Be more aggressive, defensive.
23:22
Take more liberties with the other team.
23:24
Be tougher.
23:25
And, you know, as Pat's talking about the things being in the game, I saw something this week about rules for players on the bench.
23:33
What do you pay attention to on the bench?
23:35
What are you watching during the game?
23:37
You know, it takes you to think of golden rules for forwards, golden rules for defense.
23:40
I think any Minnesota hockey player has seen that around rinks.
23:44
But I think what you pay attention to during the game matters, and good teams pick up on that stuff.
23:52
And I asked, in fact, I'm glad you brought that up.
23:55
Because I, early in the year, I don't know who I was talking to.
23:59
You know, one of the forwarders, I said, you know, as a line, do you guys talk on the bench?
24:04
You know, and you say, hey, you know, I'm going to be free here, or, you know, that D likes this, or, you know, go to my side.
24:12
If you dump it, you know, dump it in my corner, I can get it.
24:15
You know, I mean, do you guys have the, and the guy and the kid answered, ah, sometimes, and I'm like, oh, like, hmm.
24:24
Because I tell you what, you know, my center, Rick Erdahl, you know, he was probably one of the smartest guys out of the Minneapolis Conference, by the way, Washburn High, was so smart.
24:37
And you know what?
24:39
He'd tell me something and that was it.
24:41
I'd do it because more often than not, that's the way he was the center of our line.
24:47
He ran the line and, you know, and he was the guy that was going to, you know, set us up or whatever the case may be.
24:56
But always had those conversations.
25:00
Interesting thoughts.
25:02
I'm right there a lot of times and it's hard for me to hear a lot of things, but I do hear things when, like, I do hear players like, hey, don't be goaded into a penalty if somebody takes something.
25:14
I do hear a lot of that type of talk.
25:16
Like, let's keep it going here, guys.
25:18
That type of stuff.
25:19
I'm not sure.
25:21
If I hear the offensive line, I hear the one line that's right next to me.
25:25
I don't hear the other guys talking.
25:27
You know, I want to bring up is two guys that I, maybe not so much this weekend, but really two guys that are really starting to gel are Oliver Moore and Matthew Wood.
25:39
Matthew Wood is reading off of Oliver Moore unbelievably well.
25:47
Moore gets going with that speed of his, right?
25:49
Goes in, cuts and he waits.
25:54
Causes chaos in the meantime.
25:56
And Wood sneaks into that open area.
25:59
I mean, look at what any chances Matthew Wood gets per game.
26:04
It is out of this world.
26:09
I think that's the thing about Matthew Wood is he's almost kind of an acquired taste because it's his brain and it's his ability to slow the game down that makes him effective.
26:20
And you think about why he got cut from the World Junior Team for Canada.
26:24
It's because he's not flashy and the coaches probably don't watch him all the time.
26:28
So they don't see that skill set that he has.
26:31
But the more you watch him at Minnesota, the more he impresses with being in the right spot, creating time and space and creating scoring chances that are dangerous, not just the shots on net.
26:43
And how about his ability in traffic?
26:46
How like, what did you just do?
26:50
How did you get through two guys?
26:53
You know, and the puck always finds a stick.
26:57
And he's very good at protecting the puck as well.
26:59
Well, exactly.
27:00
Just he does such a phenomenal job of protecting the puck.
27:04
It's crazy.
27:05
It's just, all right.
27:08
We need to get on to Vegoe's Top 20 and a couple other topics I've listened to here.
27:12
But Veegs, we need to talk about Jimmy's.
27:14
Have you have any, had any DILDIP recently?
27:17
I've been having DILDIP like every week I go down to my cup foods.
27:20
It's right there when I walk in and I've had it for all the big hockey games, all the big football games.
27:26
We're getting ready for the Superbowl.
27:28
If you're putting together a platter of stuff, got to have some veggies, got to have the Jimmy's DILDIP.
27:33
They've got other stuff as well that you're looking for for your parties.
27:37
Got to have it.
27:38
Jimmy's.
27:38
Don't you be messing with my dressing.
27:42
And of course we've got lunch bucket hockey.
27:45
But by their, their social media is all over the place.
27:48
The last couple of weeks here, they got a lot of new stuff.
27:51
Yeah.
27:51
Local guys who played pick up hockey and they wanted to have this hard working grit and grind apparel brand.
27:57
Check them out on social media.
27:59
They've got lots of cool stuff.
28:00
You know, they like to go with the black and white stuff that that's kind of like your gritty hockey player.
28:07
And, you know, if you're looking for custom jerseys or just some apparel to wear around the rink, check out lunchbuckethockey.com.
28:14
They're one of us.
28:16
Of course, we thank Lunch Bucket Hockey and Jimmy's for sponsoring The GPL Podcast.
28:22
Vegoe's top 20 for this week.
28:25
What do you got, Veegs?
28:26
He's got a little swap of Boston College and Michigan State, which makes sense to me, Veegs.
28:32
Tell us more about your top 20 this week.
28:34
I mean, Boston College is really putting together a very strong season.
28:38
It looks like Hockey East might be the strongest conference in college hockey.
28:42
Look at the top of the pairwise.
28:44
They're dominating it.
28:45
You know, they could have five, six teams potentially make the tournament at this point.
28:50
Maybe unlikely to happen, but it's possible.
28:53
BC looks like the cream of that crop.
28:55
They just had a nice weekend against Providence where they took care of business.
28:59
Harvard who's kind of had a good season for ECAC team.
29:02
And now they've got BU coming up this weekend.
29:05
That is probably must watch hockey along with the Gophers and Michigan State.
29:11
Yeah, I see Connecticut's a big jumper in the list.
29:15
New mass down, New Hampshire's up quite a bit and then St.
29:18
Cloud getting swept again.
29:21
The only thing that's keeping them up there right now is kind of their pairwise, isn't it Veegs?
29:25
Yeah, I mean, they've had a lot of OT games, which kind of keeps them afloat a little bit pairwise.
29:30
What are they?
29:31
17 pairwise?
29:33
I think they're 22.
29:34
So they're on the cusp here.
29:37
They've had some injury issues.
29:39
Arizona State is a good team.
29:41
So getting swept at ASU doesn't really hurt them.
29:44
At home, at home.
29:47
Oh, at home, sorry.
29:49
Yeah.
29:49
North Dakota was just out in Arizona.
29:52
So, yes, they split anyway.
29:55
Go ahead.
29:56
Get healthy weekend for St.
29:57
Cloud here coming up.
29:58
They still have a chance.
29:59
They still have good games left on their schedule, but they're on the edge here.
30:03
You know, Brett Larson was talking about his team is close.
30:08
And Brett knows a lot about hockey.
30:09
Yeah, I was catching back on a few weeks.
30:12
I mean, let's look at this.
30:14
In reality, both North Dakota and St.
30:19
Cloud both, well, both can't win.
30:25
One of them, well, they're both going to have to win the title, the tournament title to get in.
30:32
And they're both near 500, two leagues.
30:35
Yeah.
30:35
Yeah.
30:36
They need a good run going down.
30:38
One of them is probably going to miss the tournament at this point.
30:41
And can you believe NCHC?
30:43
Maybe both.
30:43
They're going to have three teams.
30:45
Arizona State, Denver and Western.
30:48
Western.
30:49
Western looks like a number one seed.
30:50
They're having a great season so far.
30:52
I mean, they've been in my top five for weeks here.
30:56
I haven't seen them, but man, they just win.
31:00
Swept up in Grand Forks.
31:02
They're fun to watch.
31:03
They're physical.
31:04
They score goals.
31:05
They've got good goal-tending.
31:07
They've got a fiery coach in first-filer.
31:10
He's done a great job recruiting.
31:11
Really good.
31:12
He's really good at coming.
31:15
Good stuff there.
31:16
And finally, I did almost mention earlier, but Wisconsin is back in the top 20 for you, Veegs.
31:22
Was it six out of their eight losses or an overtime or shoot out something ridiculous?
31:27
They're not that far off.
31:29
They're not that far off.
31:30
And at the start of the year when they were losing games, they were still playing well.
31:34
They just weren't putting the puck in the net.
31:36
You know, we've been giving Mike Hastings a little bit of a hard time with his culture change there, maybe not coming through, but they were playing positive hockey through that stretch.
31:45
They just weren't getting the goals.
31:47
Now they've got a little bit of confidence back.
31:49
Maybe that'll be the difference for them.
31:51
It'll be a tough game when they play Minnesota here coming up.
31:54
How many BigTen teams did you guys have going to the tournament at the beginning of the year?
32:03
I had three.
32:06
I had four.
32:07
Right now it is looking like four, but I mean I thought at the start of the year Minnesota Michigan State.
32:16
But one of them wasn't Ohio State.
32:18
I did not have Ohio State in there.
32:20
And now they're in pretty good shape.
32:23
They are only one home loss, don't they?
32:27
That one loss was to Minnesota.
32:29
Yeah.
32:32
Their schedule isn't quite as good as everybody else.
32:35
That is what's hurting.
32:36
Happy hard time about that.
32:37
They've got a couple of quality wins now with Michigan and Minnesota, but they did have a little bit of a softer schedule than most.
32:47
Although you could say the same about Minnesota.
32:49
They haven't had the toughest schedule this year either.
32:54
Yeah, I would agree.
32:56
Well, you would think if you schedule a UMD team, they're typically down this year.
33:02
Yeah.
33:04
In Omaha, you expect them to be a better team.
33:06
Omaha down.
33:07
They're down.
33:08
But now they're playing well.
33:11
Right now, they're in the top four in their league.
33:13
Keep winning it.
33:14
The NCAA is crazy.
33:16
It is crazy.
33:20
It's going to be a fun two months, guys.
33:23
One and a half months, at least, until these conferences start wrapping up.
33:26
It's going to be fun.
33:28
Yeah, this last grind, what are there?
33:31
Eight games left in the conference, if I'm correct.
33:36
Something along those lines, yeah.
33:37
Right.
33:38
Yeah, Michigan, Michigan State, Wisconsin and Penn State, right?
33:44
And Ohio State, here.
33:46
Oh, 10 then.
33:47
Yep.
33:48
I mean, without a week off, you know.
33:53
No, they do have a week off.
33:54
They do have a week off in the second week in February, I think it is, Veegs, or was it the first week in February?
33:59
Oh, yeah, I think you're right.
34:00
They have a bye week in there.
34:02
That's not so bad.
34:05
No, but it's going to be a grind.
34:09
Oh, yeah.
34:12
Well, it's really a fight for third place, right?
34:17
Is it a fight for second place, Veegs?
34:19
Does Minnesota want to finish in first?
34:22
I think it's a fight to get a number one seed in the tournament.
34:25
I know some of the coaches don't want to talk about it like that.
34:28
Yeah.
34:29
But I see that as really important.
34:31
If you can be one of the top two seeds in the pairwise, usually your first game is against a team that's not as skilled as the rest, and I think that's a big advantage.
34:42
It can be a sleepwalk game where you're challenged by this older team, but usually they're not as skilled offensively as you are, and if you come ready to play, you're going to be fine.
34:53
If you're the fourth seed, you're going to face a very good team.
34:58
Who's five in the pairwise right now, Veegs?
35:01
I know you know.
35:02
Maine?
35:05
I just threw it.
35:05
I'm just guessing.
35:06
Western.
35:07
Western Michigan's five.
35:10
Right there.
35:11
Like, that's a darn good team.
35:14
Oh, yeah.
35:17
And I think there's a big difference once you get past 11 and you're playing Arizona State or a UMass or a Quinnipiac.
35:26
Like, those are teams that you're not as nervous about as I think you are.
35:31
BU, Providence, Maine, Western, Denver, Minnesota.
35:35
It's a big difference there.
35:37
Yeah, agreed.
35:38
Easier gaming in that first round, the better.
35:41
Yeah, yeah.
35:44
Well, I kind of wanted to completely switch topics.
35:46
I know Veegs and I have talked about it a little bit the last couple of weeks with Steve Johnson and his liver transplant.
35:51
But boy, having you on is perfect, Pat, because, yeah, you had a different organ transplant, but you know the exact boat that Steve is in right now and the struggle he's having, just the recovery and all that.
36:09
And obviously, the luck to be fortunate to get one so quickly.
36:14
It's just so many things have come together.
36:16
The community has come together.
36:19
And boy, you have a definite perspective on this whole thing.
36:23
I was really lucky too that I was able to find the living donor, which happened to be my brother.
36:29
But there are over 100,000 people on the waiting list for a kidney.
36:39
It's really hard if you're on that list and you're waiting and waiting, dialysis and the whole thing.
36:44
But it was great.
36:50
I just loved it when Steve called me like two or three weeks before.
36:57
I picked up the, I'm like, who's this?
36:58
I didn't have his number.
37:00
He got my number somehow, but he just wanted to, and he didn't want to get off the phone.
37:04
He just wanted to talk about, hey, what's it going to be like?
37:07
Here's my story, blah, blah, blah.
37:09
I'm just waiting, I'm staying strong.
37:12
I'm like, well, you're saying everything I would tell you.
37:17
You've got a great attitude, but you have to have a great attitude.
37:22
And he was just, in fact, he texted me the day that he got the transplant.
37:32
He said, hey, I'm on my way.
37:34
They called me, I'm on.
37:36
I got to be there in two and a half hours.
37:39
And boom.
37:42
And he's such a great kid.
37:44
A really great kid.
37:46
And so, I would just, I think he's, I haven't talked to him, I haven't reached out to him, few days, but I think he's doing pretty well.
37:57
And it's a month down there, you gotta go and get your blood checked every day and make sure.
38:04
In fact, I don't know if you guys know that when I had mine, I was feeling a lot of pain like three days later.
38:12
I'm like, something's not right, something's not right.
38:15
I went back and the doc said, you know, get through it.
38:19
Then my surgeon came in because he wanted to see me.
38:23
And he said, you're going to get a biopsy right now.
38:27
Boom, went and got a biopsy, looked at the biopsy.
38:30
He said, we're going back in.
38:32
He said, I didn't connect it right.
38:35
It happens three out of 10 times.
38:37
So I had to have two surgeries when I was down there.
38:42
But, you know, Mayo is phenomenal and they were great.
38:48
But, you know, I'm very happy for Steve, as we all are.
38:55
And, you know, it's definitely not the end for him.
38:59
It's going to be a long week.
39:01
It's a recovery time.
39:02
It's anti-rejection, either pills or infusions and things like that for the rest of his life.
39:08
The rest of your life.
39:09
Yeah.
39:11
And you were a little older when it happened.
39:14
He's still in his twenties or around thirties.
39:17
So it's going to be a little bit longer, quite a bit longer for him.
39:20
Yeah.
39:20
And, but, but you know what?
39:22
You know, he was younger too when he got, so he's stronger and healthy, you know, and, and just so I, you know, he's in a good spot.
39:30
He's in a good spot.
39:31
So good for him.
39:33
I don't think Steve has ever had a problem with fitness.
39:35
He's got that right attitude and love of life.
39:39
It's his transplant.
39:40
He's got the guns going and everything.
39:42
I'm like, you know, I told him you're embarrassing me.
39:46
Don't do that, you know?
39:49
But no, Well, you can tell from the pictures, you know, quite a bit of jauntice going on because he was sick.
39:56
But then you just see those guns there.
39:57
I'm like, yikes.
40:00
He probably could get out of surgery and kick our butts, Vicks.
40:04
Yeah, he's in pretty good shape, you know?
40:06
I think Jack would probably be hoping he'd give him the veil one of these years to play in that hockey event out there.
40:11
Yes.
40:14
But it's a great story.
40:16
And like we've talked about, you know, they're up at the $96,000 around there.
40:22
I keep putting it out every week.
40:24
I just want to make sure.
40:25
Yeah, and thank you and thanks everybody.
40:27
I mean, you know, I mean, the hockey community is just, you know, it's unbelievable.
40:34
I've never seen anything like it.
40:36
Any other sport.
40:37
Yeah, they're good in other sports, but this sport, I mean, it's unbelievable.
40:45
It's hopefully going to be a great story, Veegs.
40:50
And, you know, a story of survival.
40:52
It's just, it's just spectacular.
40:54
Yeah.
40:54
Well, and just the attitude Steve has through all this and just the joy and passion for life that he has.
41:00
Yeah, he really does.
41:04
He does.
41:05
Yes.
41:07
But so hopefully everything just stays well with him and it keeps progressing.
41:11
He keeps getting better and, and, you know, technology is getting better, Pat.
41:16
So hopefully he can take advantage of, you know, new things coming along to help, you know, anti-rejection, things like that.
41:22
And nothing but positivity towards him.
41:26
And we're just going to keep pushing people to donate because insurance is not always great for everyone.
41:33
And, and, and they need help.
41:35
It's just, and, and, yeah.
41:38
Craig, you and I were talking earlier.
41:41
It's very, very expensive to get a transplant.
41:45
Very, very, so that's great.
41:51
The more people can help that, the better it will be for Steve.
41:55
Okay.
41:56
Before we get to Michigan State, the big series this weekend, Veegs, you mentioned them when you were talking about Jimmy's.
42:03
Where are you getting your Jimmy's from?
42:05
Cub Foods.
42:07
Cub Foods.
42:07
If you are down at the Quarry Cub, you might just see me down there as I go through and I pick out some fresh produce, some meats, you know, go through, you're looking for something for a recipe you have.
42:19
Cub always has it.
42:20
They've got great inventory.
42:23
So when you're putting together your parties here for the football championships, for the big games here with the Gophers in Michigan State, think about Cub Foods.
42:31
They sponsor a lot of Minnesota sports.
42:33
They're on the Gopher headsets.
42:35
They sponsor a Pulltab studio and they sponsor the GPL Podcast.
42:39
Cub, they're one of us.
42:41
Definitely.
42:41
And of course, finally, we've got State 1981 Dreams of a Dynasty Beaks.
42:47
Quite the book.
42:48
Yeah.
42:48
If you're looking for something on high school hockey, check out this book.
42:52
It's written about the state tournament from the South St.
42:55
Paul perspective.
42:56
You know, 21st tournament, never won a title.
42:59
What if?
43:00
And check out this book.
43:01
It's on amazon.com, you know, with Hockey Day, Minnesota going this weekend, there's a lot of focus on high school hockey.
43:07
This is a great way to get in the mood.
43:10
And of course, we thank that book, State 1981 Dreams of the Dynasty and Cub Foods for sponsoring the GPL Podcast.
43:18
You know, Veegs, you mentioned there, Hockey Day, and there's a little alumni game coming up Friday evening at I think five or 5.30 in Shakopee that has quite a few former players and looks like fortunately I'll be able to get there and hopefully get some photos and maybe a little bit of video.
43:37
Hockey Day is just one day, Veegs.
43:40
Yeah, a whole week there are games going on in Shakopee today.
43:44
I saw the Rosemount uniforms, they had the all-white look going with the breezer covers in white.
43:50
Pretty good special uniform for them.
43:53
You know, I do think the hockey games outside can be a little bit of a distraction, a little bit of a gimmick, but I mean, if you play in one, if you attend one and you know someone playing, it's a memory for a long time.
44:05
And Hockey Day Minnesota does a great job with it.
44:07
We've got great weather this week for outdoor hockey.
44:10
As long as the wind doesn't pick up too much, it should be a fun experience for everybody involved.
44:15
I remember when it was in Minneapolis, I had my kids, my association at the outdoor rinks, the week leading up to it, we got the outdoor hockey in, we got the shovels, we had downtown and the cherry and the spoon in the background and stuff.
44:29
It was just a fun memory that we'll probably never forget.
44:32
And you know who's playing in it this Saturday morning at 8.30?
44:37
I believe there's a Hibbing team.
44:39
Thank you.
44:40
Thank you very much.
44:43
And are you going to be there, Pat?
44:44
Are you going to be in?
44:45
Oh, no, no.
44:47
I in fact, I was asked to be their honorary captain.
44:51
Oh boy.
44:52
I, you know, it's just really unfortunate.
44:55
I'm going to be.
44:55
Well, there's a lot of Michelettis though.
44:57
What are your brothers and siblings going to go?
44:59
Then one of my what, what?
45:04
True sibling rivalry.
45:06
I love it.
45:07
No.
45:08
So I really feel bad.
45:09
I wish I wish I could be there.
45:12
But, you know, that'd be an East Lansing.
45:15
So are you going to FaceTime the team and give them a little pregame?
45:20
Well, I told their coach, that I need a make-up date.
45:27
And we decided on the state tournament once they beat Hermantown in the section final this year.
45:34
And, you know, so that would be spectacular.
45:38
That would be got Hermantown.
45:40
That would be so we'll see.
45:41
They do your Herb Brooks speech.
45:44
Yep, there you go.
45:45
I don't have one.
45:49
Score more than the other team.
45:53
Keep it simple.
45:54
Well, Veegs, like you mentioned, he will be in East Lansing for the big series between Minnesota and Michigan State.
46:01
This time Minnesota's got a full bench, but I still see this as a split type of weekend with these two big teams of the Big Ten.
46:11
You know, it's always hard.
46:12
I think these kind of games are easier for a team like Minnesota to get up for and play their best.
46:18
You know, I look back at that series with Michigan State going into break.
46:23
I thought Minnesota played pretty well in both games.
46:26
They just kind of ran out of gas and they didn't have the depth to get through a college hockey game where, you know, every shift matters throughout the third period.
46:34
And this weekend, especially after Saturday, I think the Gophers will be very focused for this series.
46:42
And as the Russ gets knocked off of August Faloon and Mason-Evers, maybe this is the moment where we see this team stepping up to another level for two games and, you know, 120 minutes of hockey should be a great test for them.
46:57
You know, Michigan State is going to be the team that might be a little shorthanded this weekend.
47:02
As Red Savage will be making it.
47:04
Yeah.
47:04
I don't know if you guys heard Red Savage might be out for quite some time.
47:10
Yeah.
47:10
You know, I don't know if you saw that, but he's out and he's their captain.
47:15
He's a big part of their team, of their penalty kill and such.
47:19
So, but for me, you know, I think advantage Minnesota going in to East Lansing.
47:27
I think they can play a little looser.
47:29
I think, I think sometimes teams get a little jumpy at home and try to do a little bit too much.
47:37
But I, you know, Augustine, they got to get to Augustine, you know, but they have to.
47:44
I mean, he's the best goalie in the country.
47:47
He's my pick for the Hobie.
47:49
He's my pick for player of the year.
47:51
I just think he's that good and deserves it.
47:55
Because I think, you know, you look at their D-Core, their D-Core is fine.
48:00
It's not great.
48:01
And I think it's really important that Minnesota exploits their D this weekend.
48:07
Upfront, you know, it's, you know, they got some guys who can score.
48:12
You know, they got some pretty good players.
48:14
So, you know, I, I, hey, it's my first time to Munn Arena.
48:19
First time.
48:21
And, really never played there as, never played there.
48:24
They, they were in the CCHA.
48:25
Yeah.
48:26
Them and Michigan at the time.
48:28
So never been to Ann Arbor, never, never been to, never been to Munn.
48:32
And so my only recollection of Munn was in 1976, when Pat Fippen scored in the third overtime to send Minnesota to Denver to go on and win the national championship.
48:50
Wow.
48:51
That's a memory right there for you, Pat.
48:53
Yeah.
48:55
Chris asking, is Clark out with injury?
48:59
I believe during media time today he said it's going to be back.
49:03
Is that what Bob said, Veegs?
49:04
Yep.
49:04
Jimmy Clark's supposed to be back in the lineup.
49:06
He's been playing through some things this year.
49:10
So it's kind of one of those things where he's not probably going to be 100% for the rest of the year.
49:16
But Bob says he's going to be in the lineup this weekend.
49:20
OK.
49:22
Be interesting to see who comes out.
49:25
You think they'll kind of keep stacking the lines, Veegs?
49:28
I know they made that exchange kick a little weeks ago, but I don't understand stacking the line.
49:35
I saw that text today.
49:37
Yeah.
49:39
I don't understand.
49:42
Well, I would say that up until a couple of weeks, up until after that first game, maybe at Ohio State, it was very balanced.
49:51
Veegs, what do you say?
49:52
I would say it's a little less balanced now.
49:54
What do you think, Veegs?
49:56
I mean, I think there's definitely a line that's got more of a checking emphasis with Middlesat and Nevers.
50:03
That was their best line on Friday night.
50:06
But they're more of an energy line than a skill line, and you need a line that can play that way and gain momentum for you.
50:15
I'm not saying they're a bad line or anything like that.
50:18
It's just they're not looking to score, they're looking to control play.
50:24
And if a scoring chance comes, they're going to try to finish it.
50:27
And so like in the first period against Notre Dame on Friday, you know, that was a dangerous line because they had gotten the momentum and they play it a certain way.
50:36
So I think that's what the fans see when they're saying, stack the lines.
50:40
And now that we're seeing Wood and Moore have that kind of chemistry that they're having, I think that's what fans are looking at.
50:47
When they look at, you know, Snuggerud and Zeamer having some chemistry, you know, that's where they're looking.
50:53
Yeah.
50:54
Well, I guess that's that's fair.
50:57
I, you know, I wouldn't be afraid to put the Middlestad, Hendrickson, Nevers line out there.
51:09
And every time they get out there, pucks in the offensive zone.
51:13
Every time, every time last weekend, it was, it was really, really good.
51:21
And I think they got two goals in that opening period, if I'm correct.
51:26
I know Hendrickson got two assists, but anyway, nonetheless, hey, they're deep.
51:32
Yeah.
51:33
Yeah.
51:33
I would say, you know, yes, it's more of an energy.
51:35
And there again, we can nitpick until.
51:38
Yeah.
51:39
But it's also one of those lines that you've been talking about that allows you to connect shift after shift.
51:45
Yeah.
51:46
Yes.
51:46
And that's been a big thing for you.
51:48
Even if we were when they were more balanced, maybe didn't have that checking line or try to put a little more offense there.
51:55
They weren't connecting as much.
51:56
But now you think they might be able to connect shifts better with that energy line?
52:01
Yeah.
52:02
And I think having Huglin and Lamb together, too, you know, those are two players that also play the right way and can connect shifts together.
52:11
So when you have, you know, up six that everyone's talking about, those lines are so skilled and so talented that they're generating these offensive chances.
52:21
But you have these third and fourth lines that are playing really smart hockey and possession hockey and going to the ground game and tiring out other teams.
52:31
I think that's what you're seeing out there.
52:35
And so I get the perspective of stacking lines.
52:37
But you've got, you know, six who play a certain way and six who maybe play a little bit different.
52:42
Yep.
52:43
And here's where I'll leave this stacked.
52:47
If you are stacking lines, Brody Lamb would be on the third line.
52:51
Brody Lamb is one of the best players in the country.
52:55
My opinion, you know.
52:57
And him on the power play right now is an X factor for this team.
53:02
The way he wins pucks and the way he plays in front of the net and the way he goes to the corner when they're on the power play, I think he's one of the players that creates so many second chances for them that's gonna allow them to be above 25% on the power play.
53:17
If you don't have a guy on that, you're gonna be under 25%.
53:22
It gives Matthew Wood so much room over there to operate.
53:27
And then he's got Snuggie, he's got Rinzel or he throws it down low to Moore.
53:34
And you know, you got Lamb there, right?
53:37
So, yeah, it's pretty good.
53:41
All right, well, give me your prediction then, Pat.
53:43
What's your prediction for this weekend?
53:44
How many points for Minnesota?
53:48
Well, you always put me on that spot.
53:51
I am.
53:55
I think, I'm gonna go four out of the six.
54:00
Okay.
54:02
Okay.
54:02
I call it a positive weekend.
54:04
Yeah, they can't win.
54:05
You know, if it goes to shootout, they lose.
54:08
So, I mean, I dump it in.
54:11
I just dump in the corner.
54:12
One, two, three.
54:14
That's it.
54:18
I think, you know, go ahead, Vig.
54:19
Yeah, what are your picks, Vig?
54:21
What's your point picks for Minnesota this weekend?
54:24
I think they get the full six this week.
54:26
You know, the way this team is starting to put things together, I think a weekend like this allows them to really focus and flash.
54:34
And I'm looking forward to seeing how they come out on Friday.
54:37
But I really think the Gophers have the edge against Michigan State because Michigan State's defensive core isn't as strong.
54:47
And I think Minnesota knows how to play that way.
54:50
And there's enough talent to play against a good goalie.
54:54
I think the one thing that could be an issue is if they get into special teams where the Gophers don't get on the power play and Michigan State does, that could be a tough weekend.
55:03
But I just don't see that happening because the Gophers are possessing the puck so well right now.
55:09
Yep.
55:12
I can't disagree.
55:13
I mean, they're not giving up very many shots a game and they're not giving up very many quality chances against.
55:18
Like their team defense has been really solid even in these games where they're not coming out on top.
55:24
I'm going with five points this weekend.
55:27
I think they get an overtime victory Friday night.
55:31
It jacks them up.
55:32
Just go for the sweep on Saturday.
55:35
Who's going to win that draw?
55:39
Who would you put out there for a key draw right now, Pat?
55:42
Probably Oliver Moore.
55:45
He has been getting a little better, Veegs.
55:47
He's getting better.
55:48
He's one of those players who's built low.
55:50
He's built low and he's quick and he's strong.
55:53
You know, he's a little stronger.
55:55
You know, I think Aaron is craftier, but Moore is just, you know what, when you're strong, just go in and grind it.
56:08
And I don't know.
56:11
And Moore has been taking a lot of the draws on the power plays and they've been successful on the power play at winning the draws.
56:17
They're not the penalty kill that they've struggled the most.
56:23
Well, thanks for coming on, Pat.
56:25
Hey, it, I know I got to catch my flight here a little bit.
56:29
I did it.
