So it depends which thread I’m in what doesn’t work.  When I’m in the television thread, the general discussion link doesn’t work.  When I’m in the gopher football or Minnesota twins thread, the other sports link doesn’t work.

It seems that whatever thread I’m in, I cannot click on the parent link that thread is under.

Yes... it is a mobile thing. I did my cover photo on desktop, but when I tried to do a new one on mobile it didn't work. I will submit a bug to wpForo.

Looks like this is a mobile thing on iOS with Safari only. It works on the iOS version of chrome. So you can either update the image on desktop or update it on something other than Safari on iOS.

and with the message board update I just did... I was just able to upload a new cover photo via Safari and iOS. (Pick the smallest version)

Weird. I can't login on chrome. Somehow my passwords are messed up. It's saved for safari, but whatever it is using for chrome is invalid. Oh well no cover photo I guess, as I can't seem to find a small enough photo and I'm too lazy to resize anything right now.

Never mind. Made one last attempt by going into my saved passwords and manually selecting gpl instead of using auto fill. Worked liked a charm. 

@karlsson It's working on iOS now... Cover photos that is.

Sounds like a caching issue on your end?

I would agree, I cleared my cache out a couple days ago and that was happening to me.  After I visited in each thread once then it went back to taking me to the last post.

Just click on the topic name. If you have visited the topic previously, it will bring you to the first unread post. If you have not visited before, the first visit will bring you to page 1.

@jupiter It worked for a few times, now it isn't.  Weird.  Hopefully as I go back into topics, it will start orking again.

@cowgirl No, but oddball browser.  May have to test with Chrome or Firefox.

Despite the Google Machine, I do love Chrome. 

BTW... I am guessing that if you turn off cookies and tracking on your browser, many features here will not work.

@jupiter just checked.  Cookies OK.  Had Ad Blocking on, turned it off.  That might make a difference.

The main reason I wanted to get off the phpBB software back in April was because of how much work it was to update the software. Then we got to a point where I could no longer update it because of the portal software. But when I did update, I'd have o shut down the board to a period of time and then HOPE that the portal would still work.

But we moved to a WordPress based message board where updating was a click away. Yes the first board wasn't great, but the most recent one has been pretty damn good. I have updated minor revisions 4 times already. Most without anyone having a clue that it was being updated.

It has literally gone from a few hour update each time to about 2min total. 10 seconds to do the update by clicking a button and it updates on it's own. The next 1:50min to tweak a few file customizations I have made. Boom... We are up to date.

Yes this board is not perfect, but damn if it had not made my life a TON easier.

In fact... some of you MAY have seen the site down for 10-20 seconds while updates happen from time to time. Either a WordPress update or one of its plugins. I click an update button. It takes the site offline, does the update, brings it back online in a very short period of time. Most times it is updating several plugins all at the same time. There are usually a few updates a week across the board.

Moving to WordPress as the backbone about 5 years ago was a good decision. But also moving the message board over to that platform has been wonderful.

Well done, @jupiter   After the inevitable adjustment period moving to the new system, things have been working very well (for the vast majority of us, anyway, iPhone 7 users aside).  The "go to first unread post" function was definitely missed on the intermediate forum.

I think I may have run into one of the mini-updates along the way where it seemed the site was down for a minute or two, but I've had enough weird ISP problems the past couple weeks (just swapped my router this morning) that it could have been that instead. Even if that was the update going in, it's been smooth enough that it really isn't notably different from generic internet weirdness (Have you tried refreshing?  Oh, it's working now?  Good, have a nice day)

dumb question- is there a link somewhere easy to find that shows the different poster levels and what’s required to get to the next level?  I want to know how hard I have to work to get out of Bonin level.  ?

I know it’s way back in this thread but just curious if there’s a built in link on the site somewhere for easy reference.

Interested in the 5 people who downvoted the new Portal and why.  Not to uncover who they are (well maybe a little ?).  It took a bit getting used to, and going into the forums to get the “go to first new” to work but now it’s great.

I log into the portal page and then go to the "forum" page under the "community tab".

Most times the forum page is not highlighting the new posts  (seems to come and Go)

I didn’t vote, I’m in the maybe category. While there are some cool new features in this version, I find it more tedious to find the posts that I’d like to read, and there’s way too much scrolling; I find the pages too busy.  I am absolutely on board for whatever is easiest for Jup, because I would rather have this board than not at all!  
I guess I just found the old board to be much more simple to navigate. But I’m approaching old, so change and technology get harder for me every day. Ha ha!

Six weeks ago I would have voted no. But I think it's been much improved in the last few weeks.

What she said. Although she does have a smart phone, which is apparently so outdated it's a flip phone nowadays.

I also would have voted "no" initially but gave it a "yes" because after some trial and error on my part (as well as subsequent tweaks by Jup) I find it just as easy to use as the previous version.

1. Every time there's a thread with new posts that you're interested in (and have interest for) click on the highlighted thread title. If you've never been in the thread since the upgrade this will begin the process of bringing you to newest post upon your next entry to the thread

2. Your eyeballs will get trained on the new formatting of the portal and I recommend using the portal over all else when it comes to the forum. And I like the mobile version even more because you don't have to leave a thread you've visited to locate others with new posts - you only have to scroll down a short way

3. If you need help I'd be happy to do a MS Teams call and I can share my screen for a "how to" 

I voted Yes and that is because I have become pretty proficient on my laptop navigating the site.  So far I will say that I haven't enjoyed the experience on my phone, iPhone 11.  The gripe I have there is just logging on the site.  It takes about 5-6 tries to log on before it's successful, but the weird thing is I just tried to log on and did successfully 4 times.  It may be a phone thing then.  

Anyway, I don't like browsing websites on my phone so 95% of my time on GPL will be on my laptop and I have been very happy with my experience with the new site.  Much easier, to me, to navigate.

This new board is fine, but I prefer the old one.  This new one has a weird delay and takes longer to load when I click on a thread.  I also find the interface more cluttered and harder to read.  I didn't vote though.  It's like the Big Ten Conference.  Yep, I liked the old one better, but that ship has sailed and is never coming back, so no use complaining about it.  ? 

The portal is by far the most popular page on GPL and it has been since we started using it many years ago. It's a starting point for so many.

I like the old message board better too. So many more features. But the problem was that software no longer supported the portal MOD. I was putting band-aids on it just to keep the portal working. But then we started getting too far behind on updating the message board software in order to keep the porta working. Eventually becoming a security issue with the message board.

So it eventually came down to getting rid of the portal to stay up to date on the message board OR move everything over to WordPress (WP). I chose to keep the portal for few reasons. 1- It is a regular WP page and I can add any kind of content that I want to the page. 2- Updating the old phpBB message board software just became a complete pain. Taking hours to update each time. 3- It's tough to take away the most popular page on the site, so keeping it was a no brainer for me.

We are almost 20 years in to this site and I just do not have the time or energy to put so much work in to maintaining it. So making these changes have made things much easier for me. So yes things are not always better, but most do eventually adjust to the changes.
