It's not too often you hear people say "If you want to win a ring you better sign with Minnesota." 😉
Kwesi, KOC, and Flores are building something special here.
KOC is 34-16 in his first 50 games as coach.
Does he want a chance at a ring, or does he want money?
This one is a head scratcher for me. Would you rather make 12m a year and win a championship or make 20m a year and not even sniff the playoffs.
Gimme the ring. Not even a question.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
On top of that he would have Darrisaw back next year and presumably a better defense as I assume the Vikings will spend cap space on D if the Offense is locked up.Sam will have an interesting decision during the offseason. It would seem likely the Vikings will try to resign him if possible but most likely no where near what he could command. I presume some team(s) will throw the bank at him and IMHO Sam can and should be very choosy. In Vikingland he has a coach who (so far) has a magic touch with QBs, a boatload of receivers who make plays - they go up and get the ball and come down with it - and a decent line in front of him. He will need to weigh the chance to cash in big time against the situation he will be putting himself into; 2024 Curt Cousins is an excellent case study for him to reflect on when the time comes. Sam has been with the Jets so he knows what it's like to be in an NFL cesspool.
I THOUGHT I heard on KFAN, they have quite a bit of space to play around with...

I read they recover about $60M in dead cap from this year. But they will spend half of that on Darnold assuming they resign. That still leaves a decent portion for FA, which they will need since draft picks are few.I THOUGHT I heard on KFAN, they have quite a bit of space to play around with...
i have no idea who’s contracts are up after this year.
I think some of the piecemeal players like Van Ginkel, etc are under multi-year BUT DO NOT QUOTE ME.

Doesn’t look like too many of the big contract expire this year. I could see the Vikings picking uo some respectable free agents and using the rest to extend/pay Addison?
Theyll have to decide if they want to bring back Jones.
Was just announced Vikings/Lions is the Sunday night game (last game of the regular season). No Monday night game the last week of the season just like previous years.

Not a surprise at all.

I have never been offered $40M, but it would be very difficult to turn down. Ring or not.
3MM and a ring? Or $40MM which many people get, vs something few get. Ring. Ring. Ring. 😉
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
QBs in NFL history with at least 13 games above a 100 passer rating in a season:
2020 Aaron Rodgers (14)
2011 Aaron Rodgers (13)
2018 Patrick Mahomes (13)
2024 Lamar Jackson (13)
2024 Sam Darnold (13)
Five times. Ever.
There is a lot of wiggle room in 40M to set you for life. I don't blame anyone that takes the paycheck.3MM and a ring? Or $40MM which many people get, vs something few get. Ring. Ring. Ring. 😉
If you can’t manage 3M a year and live comfortably, you probably can’t manage 40m.
Now players that move for ego and no substantial pay difference are crazy. Wide receivers do this regularly. Addison is a possible player to do this so he can be a #1 somewhere.
Let's just go win the SB this year to be safe. 🙂
If I am guaranteed a ring, that whole deal with the devil, and get 1MM instead of 40?
Ring.

Obviously, as it’s been mentioned on GPL numerous times, franchise tagging Sam next year might be the short term answer, gives us another year with him & allows McCarthy to hopefully stay healthy and progress. Taking it slow certainly didn’t hurt either ARog or (now) Love. Based on 14 wins so far, can’t afford to simply let Darnold walk when McCarthy is totally unproven and essentially repeating his 1st year in NFL.Does he want a chance at a ring, or does he want money?

The difference between 3 million and 40 is huge. No one has ever taken the 3 if such a disparity has ever even been offered. 20 to 40 would at least make you think.
At kickoff the Vikings were +1. Nearly 60% of the bets were on Minnesota, but 79% of the money was on Green Bay. Quickly glancing it was the least bet game this past weekend both bets and money.
The Vikings open +2.5. And as of own 65% of the bets are on Detroit, but 84% of the money is on Minnesota.
Keep your stick on the ice...
If Darnold was 34, take a franchise year and hope to make one more run.
...But he's 27--he could potentially run this team for 3-5 more years. You have to operate under the assumption that his previous teams were just so poorly run that they never got out of him what made him a top pick.
He just never looks phased (save for a few moments early in the year), which is something that Cousins never seemed to show.
Geno Smith and Sam are showing that The Jets were the problem.
How long has it been since that wasn't the case, though? 🤣The Jets were the problem.
B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?

I let Jones walk unless he takes a discount. He has issues holding onto the ball and it isn't like his stats are amazing or anything. We can find someone comparable.
As for Sam...if we offer 3 years 40 per (with options and incentives) and he says no that's on him and I wish him well. Would make little sense unless another playoff team is offering but it's his career he has earned the choice. Hell if he plays well he can cash in again at 30 Cousins proved that. The league is bereft of quality starting qbs. Market price will only go up...
If the team was old or everyone was going to be FAs I would say it makes sense for both sides to let him go but this team isn't going anywhere so it's different. Now just pay Flores
So do the Lions treat tonight like a bye week? They literally have nothing to play for.

historically Campbell never has but I certainly would against a sf team who still plays physical

i think bynum will be the biggest one aside from Sam. Personally I’d tag Darnold this year unless he’s cool with say 35m a year for 3-4 years. Another year to see what you have in JJ who by all means they’ve raved about versus just eating it and trading JJ who had some teams who loved him around draft day

If the Lions lose tonight, the Vikings clinch the 1 seed with a win or tie next week. If the Lions win tonight, they can clinch with a tie next week. Odds of a tie are extremely low, but it’s still something.
If they roll with JJ next year they better be expected to take a step back. I would be surprised if he is even ready to play game 1.
Throwing this in the Vikings thread because I feel it is relevant to the Vikings and the NFC North…
Ben Johnson is a ridiculously good offensive coordinator. I can’t wait for him to get a head coaching job and leave the division.
In a few weeks the Chicago Bears might hire Cliff Kingsbury (he has ties to Caleb Williams) or Ben Johnson as their next head coach.
The franchise tag is no longer as beneficial as it used to be. So much so I think only 9 teams used it this season and none were for QBs. I'm not saying they ain't find a way to keep Darnold but it's not likely going to Halen by way of a tag.
Read elsewhere and it makes sense:
It’s all about the playoffs, to me.
Whether we keep Sam or make the move, 14 wins again next year is an unrealistic bar.
But if this team goes one-and-done in the playoffs, and the reason is some other aspects of the team are exposed, then I think your can make the case that we need the money to fix the roster if we want postseason success. If we make a deep run and are right there, I think you can easily argue for Sam being the guy to get us there.

I don't think the Franchise Tag has ever been really commonly used, I could be wrong but it really seemed to be designated for one off situations and not any sort of norm. Maybe that has shifted even further?
In a salary cap world the reality is there will always be holes. Few teams if any are 100% complete and those that are might find that type of situation for a year or two.
To me it is about making the playoffs every year and giving yourself a shot year after year, after year. If you look at the playoff field right now all the teams that keep coming back have the best QBs in the league and they are paying them.
Right now 3 teams out of the 14 team field in the playoffs are in the "taking advantage of a rookie QB deal" Houston, Denver, and Washington.
Houston is most likely going no where baring something unforeseen and are benefiting from playing in the worst division in the league. CJ Stroud is not helping them either at all and is experiencing a big sophomore slump.
Denver somewhat similar to Houston if they get in, most likely going no where. Bo Nix has been serviceable as a rookie & could have some promise.
Washington is the one team where you could say it is really working out early. They have had a great season by their standards and Jayden Daniels has been really good for a rookie.
The Vikings are going to have to start drafting better and it needs to be soon. They need their drat picks on the field. Their entire D is almost built in FA and that is not sustainable.

I think a big reason why is how much salaries have jumped in the last few years, especially for QBs. From some real preliminary research in 2017 Joe Flacco had the highest cap hit of $24,550,000 and this year its jumped to Kyler Murray who has a cap hit of $49,118,117. As a team you are not incentivized to wait and see since the prices have only gone up.

They have 3 picks next year so it won't be soon. That is why some think Sam is out the door. Personally that is why I keep him or franchise him.
That Kyler Murray contract is ridiculously stupid and people knew it at the time. Arizona is a very dumb franchise.
I think the fans throw a fit next year of they have to deal with a major step back because we let the QB go for nothing...
I'll believe it when I see it.

There will be a market. This years QB draft class is not good. If you can get your first round pick back (albeit probably not a 10) + more, not sure sure how you don’t listen to that pitch?
Especially if they plan on signing Darnold to a deal. JJ isn’t going to be a multi year backup.
Only way they both stay is in they franchise Sam and buy one more year.
IF they trade JJ, that would better be a sweet ass deal. Did anyone learn from the Daniel Jones One Year Wonder? 😉
I like Sam, I think he fits with this team, but I wouldn't be ready to throw all the eggs in that basket. Maybe half a dozen eggs. 😉

@the-rube Jones best year doesn’t even sniff at the door of what Darnold has been doing all year.

Either way if a market is out there for JJ that’s good, can’t hurt anything. That has been the tough thing about this entire “dilemma” knowing that you have some much draft capital in him. But if you can get that all back and then some, that changes things.
That's why I said it has to be a sweet-ass deal. I'd rather keep the potential insurance than trade away a potential future.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
There will definetly be a market...unless he has a setback with the knee. Plus he is only 22 and the draft class is not great.

depends on what you get and if you’re sold on JJ being a win now guy coupled with how much Sam’s contract costs you now. You tag him and he balls out and he’s getting dak money. JJ may be good, he may not. If someone throws heavy draft capital at you, you take it as we need to take and hit on some draft picks or this will be a short ride of being very good as FA deals are expensive compared to rookies
in any regard, yeah no shit they’re going to listen nfl rumors. Any gm worth anything always listens to the offer or they’re not doing their job. Them actively soliciting versus just taking the call are very different things
Aloha!
if he is willing to resign for the same deal or slightly less, then I’m in. Anything more and I’m looking to draft someone or pick up a similar FA deal
Yeah he is nothing special but for the right price I'm cool work it.
