Unintentional hand balls? Not sure what that means but not every ball to hand contact in the box is a pen
So what you're saying is only intentional hand balls in the box are penalties?
I'll admit to not being much of a soccer fan, but I've been watching all the U.S. games so far and have been entertained. Just some random questions/comments:
> There are way too many fake injuries. The girls go down writhing in pain, grabbing their leg or knee and doing their best to sell a foul to the referee. Then when nothing is called they get right back in the play, often without the slightest limp. Soccer needs to do something to cut down on this nonsense, like maybe adding an embellishment or "diving" penalty when the player is obviously not hurt.
> There is not enough scoring. I'd like to see them do something with the offsides rule, maybe go to a "blue line" approach like hockey. Or something else that would create more offense. Going a whole half with just a couple of shots on net isn't enough.
> The penalty for unintentional hand balls (in the box or whatever it's called) is too harsh. It results in a goal against about 90% of the time.
> Why does the clock run backwards, with "extra time" added for stoppages? How much time is added and then left before the game actually ends is kind of a guess.
That said I am really enjoying the games, and very much hope the U.S. finds a way to win it. I get the feeling they'll have to play better to get the job done.
The offsides IS a "blue line" rule. The last defender is a moving blue line, so to speak.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
Not sure what you mean by the clock running backwards... do you mean starting from 0:00 and going forward?
Yes. I guess I'm used to other sports like football, basketball and hockey where the clock winds down to 0:00, and when it reaches 0:00 in the last period (or overtime) the game's over, and they never add time at that point.

The added time is b/c they want to play 90 minutes of soccer. So during stoppages, the refs add the time up (not sure how, to be honest) and add it at the end.

Yeah I figured that out, just seems odd and not real accurate.
I don't think it's accurate either, but I don't know the nuances of that sort of thing in the game.

If he is saying that he is wrong. If a player say jumps in anticipation of heading a ball, or while lined up in a wall during a free kick from outside the box - and their arm drifts away from their body and the ball makes contact somewhere on their hand/arm - it is going to be called a penalty almost every time. If the ball strikes somewhere on the hand/arm while their arm is at their side and/or contact is judged to be unintentional (close enough distance the contact was unavoidable) and it's most likely judged it was inadvertent then it most likely will not be called a penalty.
You just said exactly what I said. Not every ball to hand contact in the box is a pen.

Good explanation, thanks.

No, it's not. He explained why and what the deciding factor are. Your response was completely vague.
Beautiful ball from Pulisic on McKennie's goal. Those two are gonna be so fun to watch for years to come.
US with a quick one up 1-0, 11 minutes in, but England ties it 1-1. About 27 minutes in.
US up 2-1. Goal by Morgan.
Hard work will beat talent, if talent doesn't work hard.
2-1 at the end of the half.
I thought the U.S. was a little lucky to pull this one out. A very close offsides call review reversed what appeared to be a good goal by England. And the U.S. goalie coming up huge on a penalty kick in the waning minutes preserved the Americans' lead in the waning minutes.
The U.S. played without Megan Rapinoe who reportedly was out with a pulled hamstring. Or was she possibly held out for some other reason???

She said after the game that it was her hamstring. She said she should be good to go for the championship game. Just too hard to recover in 3 days.
I guess you could say the US was lucky, but once again they got a lead and held on. That’s not lucky. If they needed to press to get another goal late, I’m sure they could do it. Luckily for them they haven’t been put in that situation yet.

I would say yes and no to this. The US was the better side on the whole and the goal was technically offsides. Plus the PK England was given was pretty iffy so you could say it, "evened out" the disallowed goal. Had ENG tied it - whether or not they accumulated the 2nd yellow and subsequent red to play with 10 - I thought the US controlled play enough they would have been the favorites to retake the lead eventually even if it went to OT.
Not sure if posted earlier, but a good (if not scathing) article re: USWNT's coach: https://www.sbnation.com/soccer/2019/6/25/18744224/usa-vs-france-2019-fifa-womens-world-cup-jill-ellis
What a fun game to watch last night!

I thought the penalty was iffy as well. I watched that replay 20 times and was shocked she gave the penalty.
On the offside VAR made the right call but if games are going to add 10-15 minutes then they really need to rethink what they are looking at
Time to add another star.
Rapinoe is cold as ice. Keeper rooted to the spot!

BEAUTIFUL goal! What a run, and what a finish.
Great second goal there! Congrats to the USA winning another title!!

I don't really care much for soccer but these announcer calls are awesome
Shouldn't the Gold Cup final be on right now?
[edit] Found it
Two great chances in the first 8 minutes for the US Mens' team.
Just no finishing touch on this USMNT roster. Altidore has a couple cinder blocks attached to his ankles.
Stu Holden cannot for the LIFE of him, throughout this whole tournament, differentiate between "Gyasi" and "Jozy"
US loses to Canada and is in "crisis mode". Aren't they always in crisis mode? lol glad I grew up with other loyalties for soccer as I couldn't handle the added stress on top of being a MN sports fan.
USMNT is back in action on November 12th! Friendly against Wales, 1:45pm.
It will be very interesting to see what the squad looks like. We have a basically unprecedented number of young American players, who are in major roles, at some of the biggest clubs in the world.
Christian Pulisic, 22, Chelsea's #10
Weston McKennie, 22, Getting legit play time for Juventus
Gio Reyna, 17!!, looking like a maestro for Dortmund
Sergiño Dest, 19, Barcelona's first choice right back, just became the first American to play in El Clasico
Tyler Adams, 19, first choice midfielder for Champion contender RB Leipzig
We used to get excited when our players played AGAINST these teams, and now they're playing big roles FOR them.
The US needs to turn the corner to international relevance by WC 22 with that talent
Round of 16 would be a little less than meets expectations and quarters would be exceeds expectations
Looks like USMNT v. Wales is on FS1 today! Excited to see who is in the Starting XI, and to see how they look today.

Too bad Pulisic won't be playing but there's a lot of really good young talent coming up through the ranks

Decent performance. It was a little sloppy at times, and obviously they haven't played together much so there isn't a ton of chemistry. But I really liked what I saw from a lot of the guys out there. I love Dest at RB. Dude has that Barcelona swagger. Really like Reyna on the wing. Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie could be an excellent midfield pair for years to come.
What we were missing tonight was a striker. Apparently Josh Sargent's club did not release him for this international break. A player like him would have helped tonight. As would Pulisic.
Really excited to see the creativity when Pulisic, Reyna, and Dest all get together on the field.
Laying the groundwork for what could be the most charismatic and creative USMNT we've ever had. Gone are the days of the plucky Americans who will try to grind you down. We've got some legit technical talent on this team!
Looking a ton better offensively today.

It's been fun watching all of that US talent develop in the Bundesliga. Don't forget Chris Richards. He'll get some playing time at Bayern this season.

USMNT on ESPN2 today at 12pm against Jamaica.
Looks like we have a pretty decent squad called up. Pulisic, Dest, Sargent, Reyna, Musah, all in the squad.
This match today and against Northern Ireland on Sunday are really important, I think. Would be really nice to get the WCQ season off on the right foot. Hoping to see a team with a bit of a new attitude.

Isn't the U23 vs. Mexico for Olympic qualifying soon?

It was last night. They lost 1-0 but still are in the semifinals. They need to get to the Finals to qualify for Tokyo
Yeah the 1-0 loss last night was a bit underwhelming, but both teams were already through, so not much was at stake. The U23s will likely play either Honduras or Canada for a trip to the Olympics, that game is Sunday evening.
Why is the men’s Olympic tournament U23? Has the Olympic committee not seen the World Cup? Seems like a huge missed opportunity that have the major world soccer powers meet more often on the world stage.
I realise I’m probably not the first lackadaisical soccer fan to ask this, so thanks for your patience.
