That is lonely feeling as a Keeper when you have a sniper taking a free kick. Had a few of those in my day where I didn't even move. LoL

Fantastic match.

Fun game to watch and a couple candidates for goal of the tournament. Thought for sure Spain was just going to run rampant after taking the lead, but they chose to suck the air out of the ball a bit and it cost them.

The replay of the game was on last night so got to see most of the game. Ronaldo’s tying goal was pretty amazing.

Not a big soccer fan, but did the Spain goalie misplay that shot? Should he have positioned himself a step or two closer to the left side of the goal.

Keep your stick on the ice...

Yeah, he definitely did. The Spain goalie is widely considered to be one of the best in the world. He absolutely should have saved that.

Yeah, that Ronaldo free kick was special. We were watching at work, and you could just tell he was going to do something before that free kick. That a truly a classic World Cup game.

I don't know if he could have saved it but his positioning and his direction of the wall was not good, gave away too much of the (shooter's) right side of the goal. As they were lining up that was my son's (a former striker) immediate assessment.

Iceland ties Argentina Shock

Messi didn’t have the same magic today that Ronaldo had yesterday. He looked super frustrated all second half.

Didn't catch it live either, but was reading about the CR7 freekick- "BBC commentators said it's his first goal from a freekick in a major tournament. 45 freekicks taken." Wow what a spot to finally get his first.

Saw he missed a penalty, too.

Missed pen in the Copa America, and now the World Cup. He's got a case of the yips, apparently.

Well, in some ways it's almost like a win! Huge, huge point for them. Really makes that group interesting.

Mexico did what you need to do against Germany. Get them early while they’re out of sorts. Not many teams can destroy the German midfield like they did on their counter attacking

Totally agree with this assessment of Neymar Jr. He spent way too much time trying to initiate contact and then falling down to get a call. At the same time, he shows some real brilliance with the ball. It's really hard to like the guy.

It's an issue that really makes soccer frustrating to watch in general. He is the face of the issue because he's in a position to embellish more than others, and there isn't punishment for it. I saw one article that said he was targeted more than any player in twenty years or something in that game.

Why do you never see a player get a card for diving?

I'm no soccer expert, but I would guess:

Because the potential reward for the purposeful 'non-call' (when one dives - not called) is greater than the potential result of what May Be Called?

You do. It's kind of rare, but I've seen it done quite a bit. In a World Cup match it'd have to be pretty egregious.

It's starting to happen more often. And, at least in England, they are using video review retroactively. Players can get suspended for it. The only way to get rid of it is to make the risk too high. Right now the reward is high (free kick, penalty, yellow/red card to the opponent, etc.) with very little risk.

Didn't watch any of the games today but the outcomes were very predictable. Also 1-0 games with these teams had to be boring as hell to watch.

At some point, Messi just needs to create a moment of magic and put the team on his back. Unfortunately for him, the weight of that Argentina shirt just seems too much for him, more often than not.
