Sooo, a lot happening this morning...

USA, Canada, and Mexico will host the 2026 World Cup. And Spain fired their manager two days before their opening match. Shock

Looks like this will be the first year for 48 teams, which I think is a bad idea. So USA, Canada and Mexico will automatically qualify?

Pretty much. CONCACAF will get 6 1/2 spots in the 48 team set up.

I just put in my PTO request at work for the month of June 2026. Auf Gehts Deutschland! :trophy:

Yeah, it'll water down the tournament a bit, but I'm still stoked it's going to be here! Hoping US Bank gets a couple matches in the group stage.

When I looked at Wikipedia, they mentioned concerns not having any specific financial information from FIFA. Also, I thought that Fifa had specific rules about World Cup games being held in natural grass stadiums. Laying sod over turf has never worked well.

If anyone wants to make a bracket, I made a GPL group here:

https://www.fotmob.com/wc2018/competition?code=CVCPFSK

The code is CVCPFSK, but that link should take you right there. You can sign in with your Google, Facebook, or Twitter account. Nicely designed site for picking the tournament. And it makes a cool radial bracket. Here's mine:

If Salah was fit, I'd have had Egypt getting out of Group A, but without him playing at full strength I think they miss out.

Morocco has a really tough draw with Spain and France

Nigeria is a tough one, in the end I just think Croatia is stronger

Tunisia I know virtually nothing about

Senegal might the African team with the best shot. I could definitely see them sneaking out of that group, but in the end I went with the star power of Lewandowski.

As for the NA teams...

I think Costa Rica will really struggle and be 3rd or 4th

Switzerland over Mexico was my upset, that one might come back to bite me

My Spurs bias might have come into play when picking England to beat Colombia lol

Sucks about Salah, but I still wonder what Mohamed Aboutrika could have done if he'd moved to Europe.

Totally agree about Senegal. Keita Balde has the pedigree to be one of this summer's breakout stars.

It is working now but any time it tries to run an ad before playing it crashes. And the Go app never even launched successfully.

Wow, Russia really wasnt playing around today. Egypt, even if Salah is healthy they are going to have a tough time overcoming that goal differential.

Yes, Mexico winning their group would be a huge upset.

I had Mexico coming second in the group, matching up with Switzerland. I don't know what the betting line would be, but personally I'd have Mexico as the favorite.

Xhaka and Shaqiri can be a great midfield duo on their day, but they just seem so inconsistent. And when they're not performing, that Swiss team seems to get stuck in the mud.

Probably because Fahad al-Muwallad was never given a legit chance by Levante.

So, do Mexico and Germany dance around for 90 minutes on Sunday, figuring they're both favored in their other group matches and just play for a draw and the 1 point?

Wow, feel terrible for Morocco. Felt like they dominated play for the most part and then to have an own goal decide your fate during injury time.

Looking forward to Portugal - Spain. Have to imagine that's a pretty natural rivalry to begin with, traditional soccer powers, first game for both in the WC...

A lot of history there for sure. Also have the angle of Ronaldo going up against his Real Madrid teammates. Should be a fun match!

Ronaldo is expected to leave Real Madrid right? I wonder if Sergio Ramos is going to give Ronaldo the same treatment he gave Salah...

Arguably, Ricardo Quaresma has just as much natural talent as Cristiano Ronaldo, but It would be a fitting goodbye for Andrés Iniesta for Spain to win this competition.

Yeah, the speculation is that he's leaving this summer. He also plead guilty to tax evasion in Spain, so maybe that'll help make his decision to get out of Spain.
