How many goals would’ve Gretzky had, if he didn’t have to play with the 2 line pass. Ovi has the record, and deserves it. Just it’s 2 different eras with and w/o the 2 line pass rule.

IIRC, Ovi did start in the check/hold/interference era also, and the massive goalie pads...

The disparity of assists cannot be argued. Ovi is a goal scorer. Wayne is a more complete offensive player.

In regards to Gator's post, I don't think it really matters, Gretzky did most his goal scoring in the 80s. Games were already high scoring and goaltending was atrocious. This isn't tongue in cheek, I would bet a lot of money top Bantam goalies in MN are better goalies than what the NHL had in the 80s especially earlier in the decade. It was a different era in many respects.

It has been the tail of two goal scoring careers, Gretzky had two halves, a prolific 1st half followed by a much more realistic 2nd. As the skating, skill, goaltending improved in the 90s Gretzky's goalscoring was put in check compared to his early career out of this world numbers.

51, 55, 92, 71, 87, 73, 52, 62, 40, 54, 40, 54,

40, 41, 31, 16, 38, 11, 23, 25, 23, 9

Ovechkin has been extremely consistent living in the 40-50 goal range his entire career with a few exceptions. At 39 years old he is on a a 56 goal clip if he was healthy this season, that is amazing. And the goaltending has never been better.

The other thing to look at is the WHA stats. I understand why the NHL doesn't count them, as they were a different league, but for overall pro hockey totals...shows how good Wayne and Gordie were....

This is NOT to take anything away from AO, btw; just points of interest.

Should also be noted that this is the cap era and Ovie isn’t surrounded by an all star team like Gretzky was in EDM.

Very good point. That Oilers team was so sick and stacked. The only other modern-era team (IMO post WHA) that would come close to comparing would be the Mario/Jagr Penguins era.

Those Red Wing teams from the mid 90’s were pretty loaded.

The Russian Five (there's a really good book and documentary on that DET team). But, the neutral zone trap Devils shut that down quite easily. 😉

When the North Stars left, I latched onto NJ b/c of Marty (and Valeri Zelepukin) as was my right as a "free agent sports fan." Smile

IMO- Alex Ovechkin is the best goal scorer in the history of hockey. With that said, I'm not sure he's even in the top 10 of overall players all time.

depends how aggressive you’re going to get with the original 6 era and how you’re going to count team success.

ovi is top ten to me but I can see pros and cons of probably 20 guys to make the list

As with any sport, it's tough to compare eras. The OG6 was the best of the best of the best, but you could also tomahawk someone with a stick, and no goalie masks, which made some goalies a little gun-shy (along with the standup goalie stance, vs butterfly). Then again, the modern era, technology and conditioning is much better, so....

Man did the Dallas Stars blow their game tonight at home. They were up 5-2 late in the 3rd period before giving up three goals in the last minute of regulation. Vancouver then scored again in overtime to win 6-5. Vancouver scored 5 goals in the 3rd period.

I don’t feel bad about that.

Perry was just as bad, if not worse later opening a door for no reason while a guy was being checked into the bench.

Honestly, perry went into Binnington hard (near a loose puck) and stopped with his skates into his arms.  I didn't like that at all, seemed intentional, and stupid/dangerous.  I would've been pissed too.  Then speared him with the tip of his stick.

Binnington is a donkey, but Perry was being extra dumb there, and added to it later in the game.

I also don't like how the intermission guys all laughed it off either.  Oh HAHA, someone could get seriously injured on a silly thing, haha.

Perry’s later conduct doesn’t matter. That’s how linear time works. Binnington got crazy for some mild contact. You can hate the guy (I do) but to pretend he was justified in jumping a guy from behind is nonsense.

Yeah, that's not mild contact. And, there is never any justification needed for jumping Corey Perry

I only caught the footage of Binnington during an intermission. Makes more sense now. Too bad they didn’t injure each other long term.

(Nothing life threatening, just a little light maiming)

Sorry, I wasn't trying to tie the two together.  But Perry's conduct, as a whole, that game was much worse that anything Binnington did.  Perry nearly caused two significant injuries.  Binnington could've maybe caused a bloody nose or mouth.

How is Perry justified going skates first, hard, and intentionally into a guy's head, neck, and wrist area while he is already down on the ice?  Perry was in total control of that situation, and decided to take advantage of making something look like "opps, an accident, I was just going to the net hard."

I would've blockered him multiple times.

Even Rob Brind’Amour kid got his first NHL goal last night while playing for his dad. Though was his 2nd or 3rd NHL game. The same Brind’Amour kid that played for Quinnipiac vs. the Gophers in the Nat’l Championship Game.
