Buxton put about 20 days worth of frustration into this ball. 115mph off the bat.

I guess good Buxton has has a couple nice games. He can’t play in the field because… so he gets to play DH in the 6th spot batting sub .200. Nuts.

Twins score 3 in the 9th to force extra innings and win in 12. They are now 8-2 since the all star break.

Emilio Pagan gets the win and is now 5-1 with a 3.32 ERA on the season pitching the most innings of any Twins relief pitcher.

Twins draft Walker Jenkins at #5. HS outfielder from North Carolina. Kid is an extremely well put-together athlete (6'3" 215lb). Can run, throw, and absolutely mash. Most people believe he was the #1 high school prospect in the draft.

He has super smooth power. Brief scouting report:

https://twinsdaily.com/news-rumors/minnesota-twins-draft-picks/twins-daily-draft-preview-walker-jenkins-r14553/

I read that they have until 4:00 PM tomorrow to sign him, or they lose his rights. Is this correct?

If he doesn't sign the Twins lose his rights but get the 6th overall pick next year.

It sounds like this agent Scott Boras is trying to get him paid above his draft slot/pick. Is the kid really willing to pass up over 7 millions dollars (his draft slot/pick) to play JUCO ball for one year hoping to get picked higher than 5th overall (where he got selected this year) next year? If he goes to a "regular" college he can't get drafted for 3 years.

He will likely sign tomorrow.

Kepler gets 3 hits tonight including a game tying double in the bottom of the 9th. Correa gets the game winning hit in the 10th.

Boras is trying to get his client paid. The Twins got lucky to move up in the draft to get this kid AND got lucky that the top 5 in this class were as good as they were (4 of the 5 in the top 5 had arguments to be the best player in their class in basically any other draft class in the last decade). In a lot of other drafts Jenkins would have likely been top 2, if not #1 overall.

There was a belief during the draft that the Twins drafted some of the guys they drafted with their competitive balance picks "Under slot" because they expected to have to pay more money for Jenkins. They took care of that last week (Luke Keaschall signed for about $1.5 million, roughly 250k under slot).

Jenkins/Boras saw what Skenes and Crews got paid (9 million for Crews, 9.2 million for Skenes) and wants to get closer to that. Wyatt Langford, the #4 overall pick, signed for about 300k over slot. Max Clark, the 3rd overall pick and other HS player picked in the top 5, signed for about 600k under slot.

Right now the Twins have $7,304,200 left to sign Jenkins after signing the rest of their draft picks. The 5th overall slot is $7,139,700. Teams can go over their allotment to sign picks if necessary but face taxation on anything 5% or less over their allotment. Anything beyond 5% and teams can face further penalties, including loss of future draft picks.

All that said, I think they'll get something done. I have a hard time imagining they'd give up a potential generational talent like Jenkins even knowing they'd get #6 overall next year plus whatever their pick ends up being based on finish this season.

This was tweeted (or is it now called Xed with the new branding of Twitter) yesterday so tomorrow is referring to today.

If Julien keeps hitting Polanco could end up getting more playing time at 3B then 2B.

With the way Julien is hitting right now they can't take him out of the lineup. He leads all 2B in baseball in WRC since May 1st and as of a few days ago his batting average and OPS were both higher than Arraez from June 15 on.

Polanco could potentially end up being trade bait at the deadline tbh. I wouldn't be surprised at all if the Twins move on from Polanco and Wallner/Larnach for an upgrade at another position (like 3B and maybe a left handed relief pitcher).

Needed Moran to be able to give us an inning or two tonight as the bullpen has been over-extended the last few games with all the close games and extra innings. Bummer that he couldn't find the zone. Saw they optioned Ortega after the game to call up a fresh arm.

Twins are facing a sinker ball pitcher (Singer) who is very consistently hitting pitches 2” below the strike zone on the left edge of the plate.  But this God Damned ump is also consistently calling pitches 2-6” below the strike zone as strikes.  I’m not sure how the Twins can win with an ump this bad.

I’m not for computers calling strikes but this is the reason to instill it.  This isn’t just a couple of oops calls.  This is consistent horseshit.

Why would Singer even consider throwing a strike today?

Then start throwing where he's calling strikes.

Make that 35 runs. Twins drop fourth in a row, losing 10-7.

Message to front office: by all means sell or stay put but you’re clearly not a contender so don’t be buyers please. Buy for the future not this season. You don’t have what it takes

I'm fine with not making a move today tbh.

There weren't a lot of big moves made today by anyone, which would imply the asking price for a lot of the help that teams were looking for was pretty steep.

The only 1st place team that made a huge move was Texas (adding Scherzer).

The Twins are in a spot where not a lot of moves would significantly improve their playoff chances this season unless they sold off 4-5 of their top 7-8 prospects in a prospect pool that isn't overly deep currently (for somebody like Goldschmidt). Even if they add Goldschmidt (who StL did not want to trade) does that really push them over the top in a series against Baltimore/Tampa/Texas/Houston? I don't think so. Maybe a move for a middle reliever if one was on the market but other than that IDK where they go to really improve their chances in the playoffs for a piece they'd be willing to part with.

They weren't going to sell off pieces obviously because the division is still winnable so moving a guy like Gray would send a terrible message to the team.

They're in a weird spot. Their lineup currently has a bunch of pieces for the future that they are building around (Kiriloff, Julien, Wallner, Larnach, Lewis when he returns from IL) and some veterans who have underperformed or been injured (Buxton, Correa, Kepler--although he's been on fire the last month or so, Polanco).

If the veterans get hot (or stay hot in Kepler's case) this team should absolutely win this division and their rotation is good enough to win a series against the right team in round 1 if those aforementioned guys play the way they are capable of. But IDK if there were any realistic moves that make this team a World Series contender. Buxton has shown some positive signs since coming back from paternity leave (5/8 with 4 XBH) and we've seen what he's capable of doing when things click. Same with Correa.

I agree they are in a weird spot, the inconsistency of a lot of guys’ bats along with their potential and pitching is kinda in the same boat. They look like a potential dark horse one week and a total flop the next and it’s not about who they’re playing against. I don’t know the answer either I guess this is a wait and see what happens kinda year. Division wise, yeah winnable for sure but beyond that? I give them zero chance to compete against the bigger dogs in any other divisions. With that, I’m glad they didn’t buy and sell off the farm to try to.

It does not seem as though the Twins have been great at trading of late.  So, I am okay that they did not trade.
