Was at the saints game so I didn’t get to watch, the fact that I prioritized a minor league baseball game over that rivalry game says enough. I’m indifferent about PJ at this point, it just doesn’t seem like this program is making any progress and has definitely gone backwards since 2019. He seems like a good dude who would be fun to play for and I’m not sure any coach is gonna turn this program into an elite Big 10 program. At the same time this program seems like it’s stuck in some Glen Mason era purgatory.I've been a Fleck guy since Day 1 and even despite last year I thought he had earned the right to remain the coach. After today I'd have to be convinced not to believe it's time for him to go.
After leading 14-7 going into halftime, to lose 31-14 was especially embarrassing. No halftime adjustments by PJ & his staff. BUT…at this point ya gotta stick with PJ, because nobody, and I mean NOBODY with a successful track record wants the MN Head Coaching 🏈 job. And that ain’t changing anytime soon, especially in the expanded Big Ten.Yeah 22M and drops to 18M next year after EOY. I am a big PJ supporter but this was embarrassing.
agreed this was the worse half I have seen in a long time from them.
2 wins and not sure where I see enough to be bowl eligible
Fleck is a below average coach. Compared to Big Ten and big school coaches he is well below average.
He’s a gimmick that’s about it.
This program is not good at all.
It would help to get a decent QB. And from what I see the WR aren’t getting open very often. Options on offense are limited.
Would be great to get a donor to help with the QB issue.

That sums it up.
The sad reality of college (kids going to school to get an education) athletics - needing to pay talent to come here. Not choosing to come here because you believe in the state, school, or program. Hard to have motivated individuals if that isn’t the mindset.
I really do not like this new normal.

Ok
Darn, was totally planning on Saban coming out of retirement to coach the Gophers.

I mean, Fleck has done more for MN Football in the last 7 years than any coach since Bierman. So, I think he's above average. And, the program is definitely down from 2019-2022, but it's been much worse (Jim Wacker or Tim Brewster anyone?).
In theory, Drake Lindsey (should he stick around) is the QB we've been waiting for.
Woo Hoo!!! Floyd came home!!!
Once again for Iowa it was a tale of two halves. The first half was the game I was expecting, the second half is the kind of game that Iowa is capable of which is nothing like what Iowa has been the last couple of years. The Iowa offense is much better in the running game, the O-Line can open up holes that helps Kaleb Johnson get his yards. The Iowa passing offense is still horrible and Cade McNamara is not worth the supposed $600k he is getting through NIL. His best play was when he was blocking on Johnson's second TD. The defense and special teams showed improvement and it was nice to see them not give up a TD over 60 yards.
It was an great game to half before a bye week before the toughest game that Iowa will have on the rest of their schedule versus Ohio State. Iowa is going to get rolled in two weeks but I think that they have learned some good things about themselves after this game against Minnesota.
I am the official Iowa Hawkeye football fan of GPL!
The cold hard truth is Gopher football has essentially been an albatross for over 40 years. PJ & Mason are the only coaches they’ve hired in 40 years (Buy a Brick Lou excluded) that had a winning track record in a competitive conference. That’s why there’s really no choice but to ride with PJ, despite the embarrassing start to this season. And in that 40 year time span, name ONE top level QB? They’ve had ZERO. Why is a mystery? But the recent dynamics of conference re-alignment works against them too. So we can rip PJ from 5 miles or 8,000 miles away, but it doesn’t change the fact that being the HC of MN in 🏈 has been a place where coaching careers have gone to die, Gudy, Wacker, Mason, Brew the utter joke, KILL, Clays and now arguably (jury still out be teetering) Fleck. So for now, we’re stuck with PJ’s rah rah BS & have to hope he figures it out.Fleck is a below average coach. Compared to Big Ten and big school coaches he is well below average.

I do not think there are enough D1 football players to pick from in Minnesota so we will never be top notch since it will be hard to out recruit nationally. To be honest, with the current transition of conferences I have given up on the Gophers ever winning the Big Ten in my lifetime and I am 51. We are not going to be able to beat out all but one of Ohio St, Michigan, USC, UCLA, Oregon, Washington, Iowa, Wisconsin, Penn State, and Nebraska and then hope that Michigan State, Purdue, Illinois etc. do not pop up with a great team the year we might happen to be good and then after that we have to win the Big Ten Championship game against the other team from that list.
I think donors and probably ticket holders will realize that we have no chance and give up. So, we will be one of the many have nots in the new world. I think there will be about 15 high profile schools and about 115 that really have no shot going forward which will create an interesting dynamic in the future. We will see what happens but not sure it bodes well for future popularity. Guessing Fleck will figure out he has no chance here too and make a move so we will not have to worry about whether or not we should keep him.
@jwg I am not following? I am comparing him to his peers in the game today. He is below average, he isn't a good game day coach and other than his rah, rah crap he isn't good at coaching the actual game of football.
The Gopher football program has been very bad as a whole for many decades now with a couple of little blips here and there.
Under Fleck the only illusion of success has come when the schedule couldn't possibly be any softer. With the new additions & the Big 10 JV division no longer, there will be no more pretending.

The Hawks OL took over in the second half-- and the Gophers did not adjust. Iowa deserved to win and no sour bacon here...
I will commend the Hawks Defensive Back coaching. They are very good at reaching around the back immediately before ball arrival such that officials do not call the defensive PI. Not saying it wasn't PI (it was on a number of occasions) but they manage to mask it well such that it didn't get called. If it is once, it is luck-- but that was clearly a coaching point and one of the reasons why their defense can be successful year after year.

I will agree with that observation, I did see plenty of plays that could have went the Gophers way and I wouldn't have argued that it was PI. This was one of the better games that our DB's played this year. It was interesting to see a rotation at the safety position with Nwamkpa and Entringer, Nwamkpa was rock solid last year but has had plenty of miscues in the first three games of this year. Jermari Harris has been the rock star so far this year in the backfield and this was the first game where Castro actually made some plays. That group though is the concern for Iowa's defense and their play has to clean up when they play the pick 'em games the rest of the year.

As long as Iowa and Wisconsin can win I'll never accept that Minnesota can't figure out how to do the same.
Yeah, it’s true that PJ has been one of the more successful coaches of the last many decades. It’s also true that 2019 was the peak and there’s no evidence that the team will reach even that height again anytime soon. I’m not opposed to waiting until that next kid becomes QB and seeing what happens but at some point there needs to be some accountability for a program that’s been going backward for 5 years now (yeah I know they were 8-4 with a terrible schedule in 2022) especially if that continues to be the trend. Obviously realignment makes everything harder and you have NIL now.
Ultimately it only matters so much what we think, the program is either gonna adapt or it’ll perish, the donors will either expect a better return on their investment or give up. I doubt PJ gets fired after this year but I’m curious what expectations are for the rest of this season and going forward.
Michigan opened as a 12 point favorite and now it is 9. Meaning that so much money has been bet on Minnesota that the books have been forced to lower the spread. I don’t know who in their right mind is betting on Minnesota to cover. Obviously haven’t watched our games against good RBs this year.
So you’re saying there’s a chance?

If sports betting were legal in MN, I would absolutely race to the casino and bet Michigan -9. Then I'd schedule time Sat afternoon to drive back to pick up my winnings.
Just listened to the PJ radio show from yesterday. Said the game plan in the 2nd half was to take the air out of the football. Then they missed a few tackles and were down by 7. That attitude of getting a lead and sitting on it is not working. Especially if we can't run the ball. He needs to adjust and keep pressing.

This is very frustrating because we have not yet run the ball effectively against anyone and Iowa has proven they are one of the best run stopping teams in college football. You have to play to your strengths.. whatever they may be.

It's troubling that you're going to focus on doing something you're not doing too well, against a team which is particularly good at stopping that approach.Just listened to the PJ radio show from yesterday. @bertogliat If I was going to my Cabin I would It is a whole 5 mins away from the Casino. I go there in the mornings to place sports bets. Good times
I'm beginning to think the gophers might lose this game.
Fleck might not be Wacker but the team is playing Wacker football.
Fleck must fix some things. Big changes must come and they should start in the second half.

Go for the TD when you’re on the 1 with 2 sec left. You’re down by 21!

They are so poorly coached and unprepared. Defense takes some awful angles and cannot tackle. They're a step behind covering any receiver. Offense gets no movement on the O-line so they're stuck in mud the entire game.
This team is unwatchable.
Defense allows a 7 minute drive to open the half. Offense goes 3 and out. Defense will start to get gashed (they've been relatively good keeping the play in front of them so far this game).
Found the positive in all this. I turned off the game and took a nap instead.
Love how they just keep running it against our prevent D 😆. So obvious that they’re gonna settle for a FG and kill the clock.
Well this team has achieved the peak trolling level so there’s that 🤣
I’ve said 100s of times and I’ll say it 100s more… it’s amazing what the stripes can see and what they can’t see.
Keep your stick on the ice...
Gophers down 27-24 recover the on sides kick with a minute and a half left but get call for off sides. Play is not reviewable.
Ref advisor on Fox TV based on the replay says he is not off sides.

If this team actually tries to stop the run on that Michigan possession with seven minutes left or even plays an ounce of football in the first half they might’ve actually won this game. Instead it’s another moral victory where they do just enough to F the people who had Michigan -9.

And I would bet my life savings that if roles were reversed… it would’ve been a successful onside kick.

It’s called being a true fan 😉
Social media reading is the best for Minnesota professionals sports to the college level. So many armchair coaches and wannabe analyst making comments. So many answers but no solutions… lol!!!

Gophers recovered the on side kick at the Michigan 38 yard line. With a minute and half left down by only 3 points that is a GREAT spot to be in.
Way to take that away from them ref.
The former University of Washington head coach just said he is sick to his stomach watching that call take away this opportunity from the Minnesota players.
Yeah wtf do you think being a sports fan is? 😂 You’re allowed to have an opinion on objectively bad coaching decisions after watching the sport for decades, I promise you it’s possible! It’s called being a true fan 😉

The call sucked and so did the gophers for like 3/4 the game so whatever, ideally this team improves and its success doesn’t hinge on the whims of a ref crew.
Some Iowa is spouting off on fb calling it karma.
Keep your stick on the ice...
TD from the 1 yd line at the end of the 1st half would have been nice.
Now now, only the “experts” like *checks notes* Glen Mason are allowed to have an opinion 😂TD from the 1 yd line at the end of the 1st half would have been nice.
So cute and funny… if the Gophers were stuffed and went into half 21-0. You all would be saying you kick there. It’s easy to sit behind a screen and comment. This is why Fleck is the coach and all the armchair coaches are armchair coaches.
