THE X-FACTOR
Last summer, Logan Cooley was just two points back of the team lead in scoring but was frequently one of the U.S. squad's most dynamic play drivers. This year, he will likely be a fixture in all high-leverage situations for the American squad.
Cooley will likely get the chance to play top-line minutes, get time on the top power-play unit and could even factor in on the penalty kill. His impact will be felt in all three zones, as he isn’t arguably just their most talented forward, but he’s one of the most well-rounded Americans on the roster. His offensive creativity and intellect mingle together so playfully, often producing art on ice.
Almost every team that wins the gold medal at the world juniors has a future NHL star in the making. The Arizona Coyotes’ prospect could very well be that player for the Americans. If Cooley has the monster tournament that some expect, the Americans should be standing with a medal around their neck on the tournament’s final day.

I don't believe Mittelstadt will make the roster absent an incredible camp. 3 returning D are left-handed and I think Hutson and Buium have the inside track on being a 4th lefthander. I assume Chesley will make it as they only invited 3 right shot D.
Cooley and Snuggerud are on the team for sure. I think Chaz is pretty likely as well.
I am unclear why Pastujov was not invited. He doesn't appear to be injured and has 36 points in 25 games so far this year.

Offensively Canada looks lethal. Wright/Bedard/Fantili should absolutely tear it up.

Aidan Hreschuk has been released from USA camp. He is a left shot D so that makes it more like L. Mittelstadt sticks. That said, they still have 9 D in camp and only 7 are expected to make the team.

FYI Chris Peters mentioned that the IIHF is allowing the team to carry 2 alternates this year in addition to the 23 player roster. So I'm guessing they'll bring 8 D to the WJC with 1 as an alternate. I get the sense they really don't want to cancel the tournament this year.
When are they making final cuts? Should be any minute now right?

They play two preliminary games, I'm surprised they aleady sent a few players home honestly. I think they said 12/23 was when it would be finalized.
Looks like all 4 Gophers are headed to Canada. 25 players to travel but only 23 to be registered to play.

Not a fan of these USA jerseys with the stripe in the middle of the numbers on the back. Tough to sometimes read the numbers.

USA came out looking a bit out of sorts. Really ugly first 2 Powerplays, but they seem to be settling in more now.
Definitely good to get a game or two in before the tournament to get in sync

I thought the US team looked pretty good. I do think they're going to wish they had at least 1 more dman that can actually defend though.
@frozen4champs Thanks for sharing that link to the stream.
Cooley is just too good. With his puck protection and stickhandling skills, it sometimes seems like he's just playing with the opponent.

Team is looking really good now. SO much better than most of the first period a couple days ago.
B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?
Chesley gets hit with a painful (but likely not too dangerous) pair of hits. First was a puck to the inner thigh it looked like, then as he was working to get toward the bench, got checked into the boards (technically from behind, but I'm OK with the 2 minute boarding call that was made)
B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?
Cooley denied on 2 breakaways. 5-1 USA with 5 minutes left

Chris Peters thinks the final defenseman on the roster is between Casey and Mittelstadt. He said Mittelstadt really helped his case with his play today. He would go with Luke, but the team has a few days to make the final 2 cuts.
Here is the 23 man roster rule from Chris.
The World Juniors this year has a new roster rule that each team can have up to 25 players credentialed for the tournament. However, they can only register a maximum of the 23 as previously stated. A player can be replaced on the roster at any time by one of the extra players, but once a player is replaced on the 23-man roster, that player will not be able to return to the tournament. Last year, 25 players could be registered and were interchangeable, but the IIHF is going back to something resembling the old roster rules which used to be a hard-and-fast 23-player limit.

Hopefully Luke beats out Casey. He has had to live in Casey's shadow his whole life. ?
