Parker Trottier commits to Notre Dame
Wow. Trottier being a day one Notre Dame commit is something I did not see coming. I knew they were in the mix but I thought he’d at least take a visit here. On to the next I suppose.
ND is very surprising. Not really a high flying offense lol.
edit. I forgot about the coach change incoming. That could be it
Feel like Parker Trottier could be a prime Notre Dame target. Seems we are a popular pick for him though
Called that one!
Notre Dame has certainly been a factor in recruiting, but curious how the new staff will impact their future classes. Thought Trottier was right in the wheelhouse but looks like the Irish were on him all the way.
When people were saying his dad is a Dr. my brain instantly went to Notre Dame. That always felt like a family that would have a premium on academics and the Edina- Notre Dame pipeline just made too much sense.
If my plan is the medical field, Notre Dame isn't at the top of my list even for hockey schools.
But que sera, sera as whatever his chosen studies will be he's going there.

think he’s more meaning the prestige feeling (which honestly being in medicine and knowing a bunch of ND grads who act like they went to an ivy school, I don’t get it) rather than it’s a good medical pipeline.
Yes it was prestige and not med school related.
August 1 has been quite anti-climactic for Gopher fans
@go4birdvowel committed immediately in the am so clearly either it was predetermined or ND got in early

Prefer to think he is simply following the Cooley / Faber path and his decision will change in about one year
Acknowledging it is no big deal I do feel left out of the fun. Calling a Mason Moe commit before the end of the weekend.
Kam Hendrickson to Princeton.
That sucks. I don't know if the Gophers were ever in it, but it would be nice to get a top in-state goalie prospect for once.

I hear what you are saying. Would be nice to get a stud Mn goalie. I'm not sure if Hendrickson is that guy and Bob could have had him if he wanted since he could have committed last year. He may turn out to be the next Ken Dryden, but there may be a reason he didn't end up at a hockey powerhouse. (He could always transfer in a couple of years if things work out)
I'm 50% factual and 50% sarcastic. When you get to know me, you will know which is which.
I would never recruit a goalie until they play a full season of junior hockey first. If you lose out on goalies that way, so be it.
Would be a good day for a Moe commit
I wondering if some of the delay in announcing some of the commitments are because they are playing in various touneys home and abroad.

My guess would be one or two are known, yet just are not announced for some reason, such as your suggestion here. It will not prevent me from throwing a fit like a child, however.

Good call. Just noticed the Hlinka Gretzky Cup starts today. Probably won’t see a Moe commitment til after that tourney.
Gophers were never really in it for Trottier. Notre Dame was in early and threw everything they had at him. It came down to ND and UST. His dad is a doctor and mom is an english teacher so a premium was put on academics.
They still have a good chance at Berchild but I also know there are about three other schools he is strongly considering.
Lutner has a high chance of wearing maroon & gold.
As for goalie, U of M hasn't even reached out to Wendt but I know several other Big 10 teams are interested...but with most goalies it's wait and see what he does over next two years. I am thinking he plays prep at SSM this year and then heads to USHL for senior year. *Both of his parents are U of MN alumni as well, not that it means anything
@westsidescout good stuff, people are getting restless but doesn’t seem like gophs have missed on anyone they were in hard on yet
that could change with any above obviously
Bumgarner to UND, no real surprise there. I think it'll be good for him to get out of MN and I don't think Bob wanted to deal with the dad who is a nice guy but just way too involved...helicopter parent.
Suspected he would go somewhere else. Best of luck to him. Agree getting away for a bit may be for the best...
After reading my original post, I should re-phrase...
The Gophs did show interest in Trottier but the family politely told them that they were already working with Notre Dame and had been doing so for some time.
@westsidescout how does that work, I thought schools couldn't have contact before August 1st?
IIRC advisors, etc. can have contacts with schools so wheels can be in motion. Just no direct, unsolicited contact from staff to player.
ETA: Forgot the Jan 1st window outlined below.
@westsidescout how does that work, I thought schools couldn't have contact before August 1st?
Official visits, offers and verbal commitments are not permitted until August 1 before junior year, but recruiting conversations can take place starting Jan. 1 during their sophomore year.
(My) Gopher Recruiting Big Board:
1) Mikey Berchild - F (SSM)
2) Logan Lutner - D (MG)
3) Mason Moe - F (EP)
4) Casey Vandertop - F (EDINA)
5) TIE - Nate Pederson - F (SHAKOPEE) AND Luke Puchner - F (SSM)
6) TIE - Nathaniel Celski - D (WBL) AND Henry Chmiel - D (SSM)
7) Mason West - F (EDINA) * Football vs. Hockey
8) Jimmy Egan - F (MAHTOMEDI)
9) Kade Stengrim - F (BRAINERD)
Xavier Wendt - G (SSM)
Luke Carrithers - G (MG)
*All players have been part of Hlinka Gretzky, USA Selects, or NTPD invites.
No August 1 commits and not landing Trottier sucks with earlier comments about the connection - but there is so much MN talent in this cycle. Similar or, dare I say, better players still available!
Waiting for some fun post Hlinka Gretzky... Thoughts? Insight? Anyone I'm missing or thoughts on order?
Nate Pederson to Miami.
Not to be that guy but there’s an opponent recruiting thread
@jdpuck04 No recruiting guru but my top three would be the same.
Feel Berchild number one with a bullet with Lutner and Moe in the next tier. Content with being patient beyond those and waiting for the Pahlsson types to blossom later (acknowledging some extenuating circumstances there).
Would also add Carson Steinhoff to list.
Wendt, Vandertop, Pederson, Celski and Puchner are heading to Slovakia this week for the U17 5 Nations Tourney.
I have heard that Vandertop and Puchner are getting lots of attention from top NCHC schools. I have heard Wendt has talked to both big Michigan schools and UND (and a couple Ivy's). Have not heard anything about who Celski is talking to but based on potential he should be able to go where ever he wants.
*I really like Chmiel from your list, kid is built like a 22 year old already. Has some work to do with decision making but his footwork is so good compared to his peers.
If the staff landed Celski or Chmiel - or both - they would have some behemoths lined up on the blue line. Curious if it would be by design or if they just simply happened to be the best players in the age group with interest. Possibly both.
Haven’t seen much out of Celski other than size but hey they took a swing on Rombach so why not.
Just don’t wanna get stuck with the Glover, Collins, Johnson D cores of years past which troubled this board at times. Big but not very mobile.

also for as big as those guys were, they played much smaller —- not particularly physical from what I remember
Mason Moe with 2G 1A for USA today. The feeling from me is that we’ll likely hear from him after the tournament is over and he takes his official visit.
But then again I thought we’d be heavily in the mix for Trottier and he was a day 1 commit to ND so who knows lol
I didn't have any issues with Johnson for what he was asked to do.
I wouldn't list Johnson as a big guy with Glover and Collins. He was 170 lb.Haven’t seen much out of Celski other than size but hey they took a swing on Rombach so why not.

Steve? Really?

I actually liked Steve too. Just as a conglomerate those d cores left a little to be desired.
BU account giving us some crap. It is a little concerning all of BU BC Mich, mostly got their top recruits of the board right away including top Canadian players while we are still sitting on zero. Bob has historically been a good recruiter, would've been nice to keep the one blue chip in eiserman but I understand with his family concerns.
It is August 9th, and Trottier the only big target (as per buzz) who went elsewhere. Land a Berchild or Moe or Lutner soon and it changes quickly. It was Defcon 1 after Eiserman decommitted and now the 2024 class looks great regardless.
Update: Michigan just landed the top American 08 JP Hurlbert
@bluebandit24 my only concern is I thought originally eiserman decommitted because of lack of blue chip recruits to pair him with, missing hagens. Hope lj mooney doesn't do the same, have to think him and other recruits could convince a big minnesota prospect (berchild) to stay in state.

I don’t think the other players recruited to the Gophers had anything to do with Eiserman decommitting. Sounds like it was because he had an health issue in the family and he wanted to be closer to home. Can’t blame the kid for that.

This is still my take on the recruiting scene as well. Trottier really the only one off my board at this point. Doubt we offered Pederson, Egan, Dean and who knows with Bumgarner.
I still think Moe commits right after the Hlinka.
I get some of the fan unrest but it’s not like we’ve been swinging and missing out there. We’ve hardly even taken a swing yet lol.
