If he is from Quebec there is a good chance he is a French Canadian if so and he ends up with the Gophers we become bilingual again this has been something the team has been lacking since Erik Haula turned pro. His accent could be fun in interviews. I like accents. When I worked out east when ever my coworkers said I had an accent (Midwest) I would respond with "No I don't you do." ?
A kid from Quebec who played in Detroit for Little Caesars would have no reason to follow Gopher hockey unless he is in the mix. This isn't a kid from Edina/Minnetonka/Wayzata (Lucia's recruiting range). Good sign.It has to be simply based on him now following gopher hockey instagram. He wasn’t in the past and they are the only college hockey account he is following. Could mean absolutely nothing but its definitely not a bad thing to see him start following their account.
edit - what bluebandit said
[sigh] I don't think my sarcasm came through with that one haha. I just thought him saying "Could be in the mix" was a very non-committal way to describe his potential. Hopefully that won't generate any more mansplaining. ?

This could be good for us more time to play with Cole Eiserman and hopefully realize that it would be good to keep playing with him.
Any news on Alex Bump?
Well it is not nothing. Social media can be informative these days. FWIW Minnesota is the only program he follows...
In the world of recruiting in 2023 this is absolutely huge. If true Morin would be a Cole Eiserman level recruiting win.
I put more stock into the Gopher account following someone than the other way around. Morin probably has some level interest in the Gophers because they're a good team. How seriously he's considering going there or how seriously Motzko's going after him, we don't know.
I agree, but a couple things stand out about this one..
1) he just became able to commit Aug. 1
2) he started following the gophers after he was able to commit
3) he’s only following the gophers
not saying he’s going to commit to us, but those are good signs compared to a guy who has been following a bunch of programs for a long time.
Minnetonka’s Ashton Schultz commits to North Dakota
I think that makes 9? D1 commits from that Tonka team last year, pretty crazy.
Javon Moore- Minnesota
Sam Scheetz- Vermont
Hagen Burrows- Denver
Gavin Garry- St. Thomas
Ashton Schultz- UND
John Stout- UMD
Luke Garry- St. Thomas
Alex Lunski- St. Thomas
Liam Hupka- Mankato
Danny Klaers should be another one.

Could have had:
Beckett Hendrickson - Minnesota
John Whipple - Minnesota
Mikey Berchild - Shattuck St. Mary’s
I think the 2010 team that lost in the state final had 11.

Morin himself liked the tweet saying the Gophers are in the mix. That is a better sign than either side following the other.

going down the social media rabbit hole and trying to read the tea leaves can be dangerous, but Morin liked this tweet from yesterday. Wonder if he will be committing somewhere (hopefully to the Gophs) soon?
Based on recent social media activity, I am locking in Hagens and Morin as solid commits.

This is another prospect that could be interesting to keep an eye on.

Locking in Hagens??? I wouldn’t go that far.
Morin literally liked a post where it was said the Gophers are in the running to land him. That isn’t reading tea leaves.

True but the way kids use social media these days he would probably do the same for a tweet about another program listed as "in the running". It's certainly a nice sign but imho not a sure thing.

No doubt. But the original post didn’t say we were a lock to land him. Just that we are in the running to land him. He himself liked that post. Thus, I don’t think it is at all “reading tea leaves” to suggest the Gophers are in the running to land him.
People were talking about how Morin following the Gophers alone isn’t an indication of interest. The fact he liked a post saying the Gophers are in the running certainly is an unambiguous indication of interest on his part. That’s my point. No more.
FWIW, it was not intended as a slight to anyone. Merely having fun with the presence of social media these days.
Interesting. Opens up the door for Hendrickson or a late add...

I’d still like to see them add Blake Perbix. NAHL vet. At this point in the summer what else are you really looking for?
Does Nate Warner still own a pair of skates???
Western Michigan is not the place I expected him to land....
It's interesting we haven't heard of a corresponding roster change to offset the loss (in terms of number of players) of Cooley. The Gophers should have a roster spot and a scholarship available. Something has to be coming. If not now, maybe Jan 1?

No worries from my end. I didn’t take it as a slight. It just seemed like most people were talking about the implications of what Morin following the Gophers account meant. I didn’t know if anyone saw that he actually liked the post saying we are in the running.
Sam Spehar to Denver. Glad he didn’t go with North Dakota.
Same here. That jersey would’ve looked weird. I guess I should get used to it with Zmolek, Senden and Yon over the years.
I feel as though they'll start flying off the board with summer camps wrapping up and time for official visits, but I am just wildly speculating.

@davey-j He's a really good hockey player and a great kid - I would have liked to see him as a Gopher.

Personally, I think the entire Dave Spehar saga is a bit of a black eye in Gopher hockey history in how the fans treated him. That his son would go elsewhere is a testament to that issue.
Dave Spehar is arguably the greatest Minnesota high school hockey players ever. He scored 166 goals (in 105 games) in 4 years as a high school hockey player with legendary state tournament performances. He continued that with a very solid freshman year in 96-97, with 20 goals scored. That his name isn't golden here is something we should be ashamed of.
@mlhouse you have a right to your opinion, I have a right to mine…and I am not the least bit ashamed of my opinion!

I don't recall there being anything unusual waged at Spehar the player, and concerns about having the kid be a Gopher seem to have more to do with the perception (justified or not) of him as a hockey parent. I don't have an opinion on it either way.
Logan Hensler commits to Wisconsin. Bummer
Some fans are still trying to figure out how a player doesn’t increase output after four years of D1 experience.@davey-j He's a really good hockey player and a great kid - I would have liked to see him as a Gopher.

37 pts as freshman, 37 as sophomore, 36 as a junior, and 19 as a senior.

It just goes to show you how a head coach will change his recruiting strategy when he has more ammo to work with.
Not saying this about Hensler but people sometimes get too caught up in the talent of some of these names thrown around here but don't recognize that a coach has to consider if a kid is a fit in terms of team culture, etc.
That is the delicate balancing act the Gophers head coach always has had to have. You have so much opportunity available to you in recruiting that you can fall in love with all of the talent and occasionally lose sight of the fit. I think Motzko has done a pretty good job with this. His predecessor struggled a bit more with it as time went along in his tenure.

He must have gotten worse... right.
If you do not remember, there were vicious attacks against Dave Spehar. I think that had a lot to do with his senior season.
Not to get off track here but let's remember that Spehar's senior year was Lucia's first year.
It can be a challenge for some guys to transition from one coach/system (for three years) to another. It wasn't exactly a bed of roses at the end of the Woog era and the start of Lucia's run.
The hype before college turned out to be his worst enemy because it set pretty unrealistic expectations on him. I think he had a pretty solid college career
There used to be a lot of attacks of players back then. People were unreasonably cruel about Adam Hauser. And IIRC Chris Harrington took a lot of abuse, and he damn near had as many career points as Spehar even though he was a defenseman. Some fans are still trying to figure out how a player doesn’t increase output after four years of D1 experience.@davey-j He's a really good hockey player and a great kid - I would have liked to see him as a Gopher.

Zachary Morin commits to BU

This site has Cullen Potter at 90% to BU. Wonder if this is what they are hinting at.
edit- tweet looks to have been deleted.
I know we were told to be patient with this cycle, but so far it seems a bit disappointing (for forwards anyway). I'm sure Bob and crew are working their butts off though and we'll be pleased when it's all said and done.
