Where was Faber, LaCombe and Nelly for the presser? Unfortunate that Bob threw Close under the bus there. Not suprised though.

I’m guessing they picked them to avoid the inevitable, have you decided what to do next year shit.

I posted the post game interview because as fans we often take losses really hard but it is important for us to realize it was the players and coaches who put in the tough work and to lose this way is gut wrenching for us but I would argue it is way worse for them. To put in the work they did all season get so close and have it end this way.

This is why I said all season as fans we should enjoy the season and not worry about the bad moments that happen in certain games. In the end for us sports is entertainment (and we are lucky to have such a great team to follow) for the coaches and players it is their life.

or is he blaming the players for not clearing the puck from out front. He loves Closer.

He's blaming Close. And he's right

Who blew the coverage on the OT winner? That reminded me of the Yale game....10 frickin seconds? Come on.

Um…everyone?

I still never saw how the 3rd goal went in. I never saw a replay and now we're out traveling around the city we're in.

Dumb luck

two of the three are already gone for sure. Faber is maybe the only one who might have been asked.

never underestimate the media and looking for a sound bite. Pitlick and Huglen also were incredibly well spoken in a tough spot, so probably many things playing in. But was more meaning that’s why I wouldn’t put Cooley out there. That’s unfair for him to have the potential of facing that question in that moment

Such a bizarre play after we were hyper conservative all game at the blue line and then we pinched followed by pinching again and were hoping somehow Nelson was going to pick up a wide crashing wing who had no obligation but to get to the net. Also part of why I don’t really get why you roll Koster-Lacombe out there against their top line over a more lock down guy like Faber to start OT (I get the lack of the KSC line given the Nelson line always starts). Those I think  will be the more lingering questions many fans have decompressing this one and looking at Bob for answers

Through decades of being a Minnesota sports fan, and therefore having been kicked countless times in the nut sack, I feel as though I've acquired a bit of perspective. Disappointed? Hell yes, a huge amount. But I'm just a fan. I think of the players and staff and what they're feeling HAS to be overwhelmingly crushing. Been through that on a MUCH smaller scale in the athletics part of my life and it is a horrible, empty feeling.

In looking on social media after the game, I saw "disgraceful" used in a comment and it reminded me of a story I read ages ago. One writer had described the play of their team in a certain game as "disgraceful". Another writer responded: "No, disgraceful is Europe standing idly by as Hitler, the Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe annexed one chunk of sovereign territory after another. This was just a game between grown men". Passionate and rational can co-exist for us as fans, as long as we let them.

To me it was a combination mistake. We got beat by the stretch pass.

LD moves up to take the RW between the red line and the blue line.

The RD slides over to cover the space and get to the guy who the pass was made to.

Our C is now trying to catch the open third forward who scores.

If you pause the video at 23 seconds they basically have a 2 on 1 due to our guys getting beat by the stretch pass.

BTW that was a sweet back handed pass by the Q.

For sure the players feel awful. They tried there best, but it just wasn't good enough tonight.

The Cooley penalty changed the game. Now, why one ref called it from 150 feet away when the other ref emphatically wagged two fingers to indicate both players were equally at fault, I have no clue. In my view that was a terrible call, but I saw it live without seeing a replay.

If this is true, I hope the ref is proud of himself to make a flimsy call like that with 5 minutes left.

Can't say gophers deserve a win, but with 5 minutes left and the way they were keeping the puck on the perimeter, they definitely had a chance to salt it away.

it’s a bad call, but when you play shell for 25 minutes you’re inviting possible disaster. Can’t blame the stripes for the loss, though this particular call (especially in a game where they didn’t really call anything) was a head scratcher

The lack of a puck clear, like so many PP/end of PP goals was the big problem on goal two. it that puck clears out to neutral zone, its different story. Maybe I will have the fortitude to rewatch later but it sure did not seem soft to me at the time.

The Cooley penalty was clearly both to the box, maybe the second ref saw Copley’s extra push and that overruled the double coincidental minors?  If Cooley had pulled away, and not retaliated, it would have clearly been a hold on Q.

that said q deserves credit

Keep trying Papa L...no one is buying your negative crap.  The leadership you spit on last year lead the team to the friggin title game.

Keep embarrassing yourself it will make everyone laugh and some need it badly!

And don't worry I'm sure some ECHL team will probably sign your precious little boy ? ?

What a heartbreaking loss! What is very frustrating is that with now 8 championship losses, the Gophers have gave 5 teams their first championship against RPI Engineers in 1954, Boston University Terriers in 1971, Harvard Crimson in 1989, Union Dutchmen in 2014, and now Quinnipiac Bobcats in 2023 but I am very proud of the Gophers regardless! Thank you Gophers for a great season and congratulations to the Bobcats on their first championship!

Can someone who understands hockey officiating better than me explain why when the ref closest to the play signals to the players to break it up or they'll both go to the box and the referee 120 feet away from the play calls it a penalty, the ref closest to the play doesn't step in and say "if you're taking one, I'm taking the other"? Are hockey referees not allowed to huddle and discuss that type of stuff?

On the replay of the Cooley penalty you can clearly see him signal to the guys but when his partner raises his arm he goes silent. I don't get it.

Not saying Cooley didn't deserve a penalty but the QU guy grabbed his stick, pinned it to his stomach and didn't let go until he hooked Cooley's arm in.

So he was so bad a coach his team won the toughest league by a considerable margin and had his team playing in the final game of the year?

Sounds like the type of take someone on a third rate station like SKOL would have.  Their 13 listeners probably agree.

Where were all the so called great coaches today?

@beauner the ref close  to the play was right in front  of us. He should have ask the guy who made the call what the hell he thought  he was doing....I mean, he literally took the no-call away from him.

That garbage literally gave Q a chance to go 6 on 4 with  very little time left.

Rewatched the end and OT. I don’t know how only Cooley gets a penalty, just baffling. Especially when you let Q be physical with Cooley the whole game. And the start of OT is just insane how does that happen ?

https://twitter.com/mikemcmahonchn/status/1644899834032271360?s=42&t=UtlPiq7Vt1Te97QT76L7LQ

or is he blaming the players for not clearing the puck from out front. He loves Closer.

It was an initial shot, no puck to clear. And I thought we did an excellent job of clearing rebounds and not giving up second chances all game.

Ultimately we had 15 shots on goal. Close wasn't the reason this was an L.

Thats what annoys me about this game the most, the gophers were outshot 2:1 and had no business being “in the driver seat” for 57 minutes. They fumbled and threw the puck away for the vast majority of the game and didn’t play anything close to what they played like all year. Anyone blaming Close for the outcome is trolling and exhibiting AI behavior. And I don’t say this as someone who thinks he’s blameless because I play the position and know what he could’ve done differently but the Gophers got outplayed badly, they didn’t deserve to win, I don’t say that lightly. I’d be more enraged if I felt they got cheated by the refs or luck or what have you but they played maybe half the caliber of the Michigan big ten final loss. Trying to explain this to people whose only game they watched this year was this one was difficult.

All year this team was able to break out of their zone and even hit home run passes, possess the puck, and make skilled plays. And then for the vast majority of this most important game they just… threw the puck away repeatedly and tried to replicate the late 2000 era Wild. If they won a national title playing that bullshit style of hockey I would’ve been as happy as anyone but they got the result they deserved, go ahead and get mad at me for saying it but it’s true.

I’ll just end on the fact that it’s sad to conclude on such a sour note because this has been a great season and this is probably the best gopher hockey team I’ve watched… well I’ve been watching since 2006 so probably ever for me. I don’t think this game defines the season but it’s just kind of embarrassing to see the team play this uncharacteristically bad in this particular game.

Gophers played on their herls after the goals. They weren't playing like their offensive selves and got out shot 2-1. So close with minutes away from winning it. That penlaty didn't make or break the whole game but definitely an impact at the end. Such a talented team and played conservative. Great season despite the end

From USCHO:

"Minnesota lost only once in the 2022-23 season when leading after two periods, Saturday’s national championship game. The Golden Gophers had been 22-0-0.

Quinnipiac won only once in overtime this season, again in Saturday’s title contest. The Bobcats were 0-1-3 in games decided in OT prior the final game of the season."

I believe BU had a similar stat about scoring first

What an absolute heartbreaker. “Uncharacteristic” is the word that most comes to mind. The players’ nerves were contagious in the arena. The Q players and fans grew in confidence as they pushed for the inevitable leveling goal.

But it was a tremendous year, and we have a lot to be proud of. Hopefully this loss will propel us for next year.

From a personal perspective, this season will always be close to my heart as it was the season my daughter fell in love with Gopher Hockey.

I told my fried at the game that MN is a strong 3rd period team, especially after a slow second period. Last night in the 3rd they looked nothing like the team I've been following all year.

I don't know enough about the Xs and Os of coaching to pinpoint the failures, but it was obvious last night that Minnesota could not get down the ice for scoring opportunities. The penalty call on Cooley was brutal, though, and gave their opponent the chance they desperately needed to tie it.

I kept waiting for Minnesota's top line to grab the brass ring, but if we're being honest, they did not have a good frozen 4.

That style of play is a problem Motzko has not been able to solve.  The Gophers have lost the last three NCAA tourneys to Mankato twice and now Quinnipiac.  Very similar style of play.  Aggravating to watch for this hockey fan. No flow.  Low on chances to watch great scoring plays.  Antithesis of exciting.  It’s always gut wrenching.

I thought this year would be different because the Gophers had the talent to score in so many different and creative ways.  Then Bob screws it up again and puts the brakes on the offense.

Now we have Mike Hastings in the B1G so wash, rinse, repeat.  Bob’s going to have to figure this out soon.  Still fuming we pissed away a 2-0 lead the way we played.

Close doesn't deserve any blame because it's not fair to ask your goaltender to make easy saves? That's really the "horrible take" that you're going with?

Clearly the biggest talking point on the game is whether or not it was a good idea to sit back and defend to the extent that the team did. Motzko and the players need to be held accountable for that, but there's also no denying the FACT that that strategy produced a game where an even below average goaltender would've/should've allowed zero goals. Close isn't exempt from having a terrible game just because others did as well.

the cross ice one is a tough one to give up. OT goal he had no chance. Agree he has to stop the shot from the sideboards (in all honesty, it's a gift shot that should be a save, cover, and fresh line out there with the penalty time expired) and we're possibly having a way different convo about how lucky but how happy we are to grab 6 despite playing that way and Bob gets to stand up there and say they managed the game well.

Close was nowhere near the problem tonight, I'm sorry but that's a horrible take. When you play a shell defense for two freaking periods with a 1 goal lead, something bad is bound to happen. It's hockey, bounces happen and sometimes you have to make your own luck / not rely on the other team giving up.

What I don't understand is the strategy to shell it up in the first place. Turns out we don't play our 'A' game when we're not even trying to get the puck into the offensive zone. Bob and the players seemed pretty adamant after the game that they were executing the plan that they were trying to execute, which, if so... Yikes. 15 shots for this team?! In what world is that a good game plan for gopher hockey?

We'll all be fine, but I feel for the kids in that locker room. A tremendous team that I think deserved better than what happened to them tonight. Some curious decisions by the coaches I'd like to better understand, but that's for later.

My biggest issue with the game is Motzko's decision to sit back in such a conservative way. But, if we're going to blame him for doing that we also need to be willing to admit that his strategy resulted in Quinipiac getting zero quality scoring chances until OT. They played the same way against St. Cloud and it worked perfectly. I don't remember anyone calling Motzko a terrible coach after that game. The only difference between the two games was how the players executed their roles.

i agree with that and said as much as to my buddies watching live that we were going to try play the way we did to STC. Much tougher opponent to do it against which makes it a little more questionable to me to try.

The consensus going in to the game was that if we could get ahead it would be tough for Q to come back, even more so if we go up two. But the opposite happened. Once we got up 2-0 both teams changed their strategy. We stopped attacking and Q started pressing.

Yes Close let in a soft one in the third, but if you're going to play prevent defense and let the other team hammer away, one of those shots is apt to go in.

there was a clear change in play in the second and even more in the 3rd. From the drop of the puck in the third Q's defense took chances to hold the puck in. The Gophers defense took few offensive initiatives.

I'd take that strategy with a 2 goal lead in the third, but your opponent is driving with both hands on the wheel for two periods while the Gophers seemed content to hold that narrow margin . I guess nobody counted on a gift penalty with 5 minutes left in the game.

Close played a good game but on three goal mouth tries you gotta save one of them.

Motzko still has the monkey on his back of being a great recruiter and players' coach while underperforming in the tournament. He had all the horses this year, so a modicum of criticism is fair. I was sincerely pulling for the guy this year.

The Gophers program I believe leads the nation in NCAA appearances, but their closure rate is pretty mediocre.

Fun trip but it was something like having a great meal followed by a sour port wine.

2 shots in the 3rd is embarrassing. But the gophs got this in overtime!

I thought you said Gophers got this in overtime? Next time please shut up so you will not look like an idiot ?

That last one was the result of a late 6 on 4 set up by the stripes. Having said that, Cooley did have the option to skate away but instead decided to start pushing. He did that a few times this season and this time it proved terribly costly.

This will go down in the history books as, "Oh, what could have been...".

I give Quinnipiac a ton of credit - down by 2 they did not panic.

I was hoping for the first National Championship in the GopherPuckLive era.  Obviously don't post much but always appreciate the commentary and insights here dating back to PrideOnIce.com.

Take care, all.

Was at the game last night. Was going numb waiting for the OT to start! So deflating. Really unfortunate us Gopher fans there couldn’t have a wonderful moment. We really showed up! Sports are brutal.

They didn’t willingly go into a defensive shell. Unless I’m missing something I did not see an official edict from Motzko about how to play the remainder of the game. The so called national media and the fair weather local media have no clue what they are talking about.

Q found their game in the 2nd and 3rd. Go watch the Ohio st and Michigan games. Q were sloppy in the first which led to the first Gopher goal. They cleaned it up and settled in. A coach can only prepare a team so much. Players have to execute.

Ch 5 played Bob's remarks about the 3rd period goal this morning. I like Bob but that was cringeworthy. There is plenty of blame to go around.

You should have not went to the game, you should have known better that Gophers are going to lose since Minnesota sports usually choke which is unfortunate but sadly true
