Do the coaches go through the handshake line or not? I thought yes but wasnt sure - bob stayed on the bench and narato took off   (or i didnt see him on the bench - may e needed a starbucks for the road). Im  not sure if they shook hands or not.

They shook hands, they showed it briefly on TV.  Bob didn't look too happy...

We laughed about how it was extremely perfunctory. I don’t feel like tBob has much respect for that dingus.

Not only did the Michigan player maul Snuggy into the boards (hard to tell if it was to the side of Jimmy or from behind), but he then hit him again after he fell.  Completely bush league.

This video shows the first hit but not the second hit.

I didn’t think the first hit to Snuggy was that bad, but the second was clearly with intent to injure. He was down and then gets a cross check to the head (against the boards). IMO Werner should get a 2+ game suspension, but I’m not holding my breathe.

The goonery from Michigan this weekend was up there with any Nodak team I remember this century.

It was obvious Naurato told his team to play goon hockey. Estapa sent the message on the opening face off by plastering Moore. He is a dirty player and I have little doubt the head shot on Huglen was well placed.

Minnesota's defensive play was master class. Michigan committed to shutting down Minnesota's skating but the Gophers didn't give Michigan too many good looks.

Bad timing for missing players next week with State coming to town. Hope they can split.

What happened to Thomas?

What happened to Thomas?

Thomas slid awkwardly into the boards. It’s going to be a high ankle thing from looking at it but he was very uncomfortable throughout the rest of the shift

For people wondering why there's fighting in the NHL, this game is a good example. Refs are relectuctant to call penalties on the same team over and over even when they're warranted. Players have no choice but to defend themselves.

WTF was with Hallum? His attack on Lamb was like one of those road rage videos on YouTube. I'm not sure he even got a penalty...Duke got a major for a punch while Hallum was hacking away at Lamb's face.

The refs completely lost control of the game. Michigan should have played half the game short handed.

refs were awful all weekend. My fav was the fans screaming at 5 (the ref) telling him to open his eyes in the 3rd and almost immediately after he finally called something. It was such a peculiar weekend of what they chose to call, timing, and situations they gave doubles. Nothing was consistent. Very little seemed right. Unfortunately these are the guys we get every week

Refs this weekend forgot that their job is to call the rulebook, not try to keep the games close.  Gutless wonders.

Seeing coach naugahyde slink down the tunnel to avoid any hint of sportsmanship was the least surprising thing I saw this weekend.

Nope, just consistently bad, letting Michigan get away with assorted obstruction, lots and lots of late hits, several punches, etc all weekend.

News flash, refs:  you're not out there to keep the score close, you're there to enforce the damned rules, and you failed miserably this weekend.  The hit on Snuggy would never have happened if you'd called any of the DOZENS of after-the-whistle cross-checks, punches, etc by Michigan earlier in the weekend.

Surprised they didn’t give Snuggy a two based on how they called the weekend

There were a couple Gopher penalties like that this weekend... Gopher gets cheap-shotted, without retaliating, the Gopher got called, not the thug making the hit.  (Lamb for sure, and I remember another one, can't remember which call it was)

Ziemer and Hendrickson really stood out tonight. Might’ve been Hendrickson’s best weekend. Ziemer’s got that dog in him.

Our roster has 14 forwards and 9 defense men but with 4 forwards hurt (Huglen, Pahlsson, Nevers and Falloon), Wood at the Canadian World Junior Camp, and Thomas hurt the Gophers next weekend will be down to 9 forwards and 8 defense men.

I suspect Begley and Rudd will be the 10th and 11th forwards with the 6 defensemen being Chesley, Rinzel, Koster, Luke Mitts, Gruba, and Whipple.

We will only be suiting up 17 skaters rather than the normal 19 unless the 3rd and 4th goalies (Weiss and Bryant) suit up as skaters.

It likely will be a 3 line weekend with

Ziemer, Clark, Snuggy

Kurth, Moore, Lamb

Hendrickson, J Mitts, Michel

with Begley and Rudd getting a few shifts at forward

If I were Bob, I would dress Wiese as an extra forward so he could be available to serve penalties if need be. IIRC, Michigan did that against the Gophers a few years ago.

I think this team feels super close to one another, I absolutely love how they stick up for each other, and that Bob has them playing no nonsense good clean hard fast hockey. Everybody seems to understand that the ultimate revenge is up on the scoreboard.

Rinzel is turning into one of my absolute favorites to watch. He's such a beautiful skater and just masterful with the puck on his stick up at the top of the zone. His keep ins alone are worth a ton of sustained offense. Hobey watch for me.

So, he had a proper appreciation of the game and how it should be called, is what you're telling us?  Because the Refs this weekend sure didn't.

If it wasn't going to be an automatic penalty/ejection, he was about to skate over and deal with 91 himself.

Now to see if the B1G office has the intestinal fortitude to do their damned job for a change and start handing out suspensions.

Michigan going full UND!

Lol, just finished watching the recording and saw the cheap shot they had with ten seconds left in the game. That was definitely a FAWKer-like moment.

As much as yesterdays ass whopping was fun to watch this was a way better played game overall by both teams. Michigan taking a bunch of dumb penalties really screwed them this weekend, the only goal (besides the EN goal) today was on a lengthy power play where their goalie was presumably gassed. Other than that both teams had some good chances and both goalies were really locked in, defensively it wasn’t a bad effort by either side. I typically don’t expect the gophers to win games 1-0, they don’t really design their roster and coach the team to eek out close wins in low scoring games. So in that sense it was good to see them do that for once, Souliere came up big when he needed to but was also bored for large swaths of the game. It’s also really impressive because they were without their normal center depth minus Huglen.

That was about as good as you could ask for out of this weekend, ill be going to both games next week and it’ll be hard to top that but I’m looking forward to it.

Nope I agree completely.  This team CAN be this good.  Very very hard to do for the entire season.  We need this exact team to show up in the NCAA tourney.  No other time matters as much, but holy crap is it amazing to watch what they are capable of!!!  Total domination of a very good ( but cheap as hell team).  The team defense is amazing and something that has been absent in previous teams.  So much scoring potential!  Wow.  I was so impressed with the effort tonight.

Do we know anything about Huglen’s injury? I’m hoping it’s more of the short term variety.

@trixr4kids

So the people who have been questioning the goaltending this year I cannot understand.  MOST top teams do not have an NHL draft pick in their net.  We are so fortunate to have an excellent young tender with USHL experience who is currently undefeated (yes I know he has been shaky at times but still held).  We also have a VERY experienced goalie in Souliere who in my opinion will be our champion. So cool under pressure and no nerves shown yet.   The rest?  Rinzel is really a superstar and can only improve when he gets more experience in critical situations (flashbacks of Lacombe).  This team is extraordinary in that the depth is great (thank goodness right now), the total buy-in on the plan is fantastic, and the chemistry seems really nice.  I have not seen a Gopher team with this level of TEAM defense in quite some time.  This is what wins.  The offensive side is undeniable but we have had that before.  The other end including the forward responsibility is new for this team in my opinion.  This could be the combination for success.

Michigan definitely was following their old playbook of seeing what penalties they can get away with and pushing it as far as they could.  It didn't really backfire Friday since that wasn't the reason why they couldn't score, but it certainly didn't help and it did hurt them Saturday.

I'm still stunned with how easy it was Friday.  For the last month it felt like we were hitting speed bumps for one reason or another while Michigan was pummeling its opponents with offense, then we shut them out big.  I know Hage was out injured, but how much of a difference would he have made had he been in the lineup?

Michigan State also didn't do so hot this weekend, so there may be more blood in the water next weekend.

I would like to see us get back to more variety on the PP with 81.  He can bomb it, but we are getting very predictable again.  Use him as a decoy every once and awhile to keep people honest.

We need to be better at taking away the goalie’s eyes in general.  A lot of SOG but at this level goalies will make those saves.  This is an area Wood should eat up at his size and with his hands.  He is so talented but needs to play more like Knies less like Cooley as that is how he will have a great NHL career.

Agreed about the predictability of our PP. Too much stationary passing. Our PP seems to function best when the players are moving their feet, being interchangeable with their positioning on the ice. With how well we can skate and pass, that really seems to open up holes in the PK.

agreed to Me in that I’d like seeing Wood play the bumper rather than us run this umbrella set up we currently are. Doesn’t work well as they don’t have the right handedness for the back and forth one timers though Brody is doing a great job at the net front. Would move Ollie to woods spot and drop wood inside to that float bumper position. Though it seems they really like woods ability to seam pass. Honestly thought the pp looked fine this weekend. They shot the puck and had a ton of zone time. Michigan’s goalies played very well all weekend

Michigan could have earned so much respect for that response last night had they not gooned it up. They played a game they could have won. Thankfully, they got exactly what they earned by taking needless penalties.

That brand of goonery comes straight from their coach. There were two majors with game elections that had nothing to do with the play and myriad other stick infractions that went uncalled. I lost count of the crosschecks.

@streakygopher

Crosschecks, holding, interference all running rampant for the whole weekend but Saturday was ridiculous.  Guys being held, sat on, and blatantly hauled down with no calls.  Michigan is notoriously chippy but this was pretty egregious.  They had multiple players throwing punches and nothing.  One of the reasons I love college hockey more than NHL is that there isn't supposed to be that goon aspect where a team succeeds due to being able beat up some other teams best players.  PLEASE get a handle on it refs.

Fantastic series marred by the extracurricular junk from Michigan.

Would be a great time for the holiday break given how banged up this team is, but this team has the grit to have a good weekend against the Spartans. Get a win or two - get healthy - and continue to improve into the second half.

@chris-eckes Couldn't agree more on Rinzel. I got to see him play in Waterloo a few times for the USHL team there and it was pretty obvious he was going to be a special player, I thought he was dynamite all weekend. He's quickly becoming one of my all time favorite Gopher defensemen.

Just a great team effort last night. Can't say enough about the entire D corps, the way these guys play I might be able to play 1 shutout period in goal.

What a great video @jupiter

A couple of observations-- Whipple appeared to not be happy with #17 in the line and Snuggy was barking at #73 at the end as a linesman had to step between them. The series at Michigan could be interesting....

I was recently informed by a GPLer that I'm related to Airey

Great video indeed!

I'll have to re-watch this again Monday morning to set the tone for the upcoming week!

Bummer we left a few minutes early because of the young kids...  I was wondering why I heard booing on the radio at the end of the game, but Wally fortunately explained it hahaha...

I commented it was one the loudest sweep chants and post-game Rousers I’ve heard in a long time.  Most of the student section and even a majority of the other fans stayed.  What a special weekend to be at.  Hope we get some good news on the injury front before next weekend, but either way we have a deep and talented team that’s fired up.

Loudest I remember since the UND sweep in Fall 2011 that followed a last minute Kyle Rau GWG.
