I’ve been planning on on 3 of Faber, LaCombe, Johnson leaving so if any come back I’ll be ecstatic. Right now I have something like:

Staudacher-Chesley

Thomas-Koster

Fish-Mittelstadt

That d group plus 2 mystery players should be good enough to win games with what explosiveness they have up front.

I agree. The youth scares me a little and the limited action Fish has had. Seems like the staff will be looking for an impact transfer on D with a year or two left.

Losing three quality defensemen at once could gut their defense for at least the first half of the season. Young defensemen require a longer break in period.

Depth at the high-flying forward positions is great, but someone needs to get them the puck.

The hope is someone like Chesley can jump in and be solid right away. Kind of “Lindgren-esque”

It wasn't just one loss. It's the same exact loss as last year. What really concerns me is that I don't think we could ask for a better D corp, and yet they were helpless against that relentless forecheck.

They played a bad game, MSU might be the best team out there and they had more experience going in. if the argument is their prospects are shot because they didn't win one game this year I'm going to disagree, and I'm going to disagree they only got as far as they did because of Close and I disagree a team that was 4th in the country for GPG did so because of only 1 line despite have a PP that was non-existent until the end of the season. If you see it another way that's fine.

Looking forward to next year.

If he gets pushed down the lineup that might work too but the guy kinda drags his line down.

How is this different from athletes getting scholarships? Is that not “financial support” to get an education?

Scholarships can only be used for school expenses. My take is this is essentially paying them which they can them do with as they wish.

First thing Meyers says “do I owe you money?” Not sure how to take that. LoL

I had met him a couple years ago. Guess he didn’t remember.

Funny story. I saw a guy (at this same bar) that I thought was you. Yelled out “your first name” he comes over and (and it’s not you), but his name is also (your first name).

Turns out he’s the guy who invented uscho. I did not know it was invented by the math dept. at the U of MN in the mid nineties.

He was around Mariucci much more this season after not being around as much over the past 5 years or so. It was nice to have him around again. His spot was right next to ours in the press box this year. Most of the time he is writing code or monitoring the health of USCHO when he is there.

I’m not sure if it was Lee or Tim but I know Lee went to school in Boston before the U. I forget how I knew him in college though

So what’s the opinion on the position of the teams that hold the rights to Faber, Johnson, LaCombe and if they would have a good opportunity with their clubs or may come back?

Neither Buffalo or Anaheim are going to want to let Johnson and LaCombe come back for a 4th year. Playing that 4th year allows them to become UFA next summer. So, I would expect a hard push for those 2 to be signed. Faber is only 2 years in, so he's a little different, but he's also the most NHL ready of the 3. LA does have a solid group of right handed dmen though, so they're probably not desperate to get him signed

Honestly there’s not much point in speculating, we’ll find out soon enough. What I will say is that if all 3 D leave that might make next year tough even with all the forward talent coming in so hopefully at least one or even two come back.

Motzko’s teams so far haven’t ever hit the perfect balance of forward and blue line talent. His first team with Pitlick and Sheehy etc. was clearly carried by the forwards but they struggled with breakouts and possession because the current group of D wasn’t here yet. After that year I feel like the blue line was clearly the strength of the team but they lacked some of that high end forward talent of previous years (Meyers and Knies non withstanding).

He needs to do more than worry...the USCHO board sucks and is 15 years outdated after their last update. Just pathetic...

Really good board software is not cheap... I have always stuck with the free stuff. But now it is to the point where the free stuff is getting harder and harder to update. The new board will be simpler and have less features... But after so many years, I just do not have the patience to have complex software that is difficult to work with.

He did say he’s working on trying to improve it. But I suppose as Jup knows it’s a lot of work to do as a side gig.

Twenty-one years ago, the Gopher coaching staff convinced a highly sought after young man to forego the NHL for one year and play his senior year under the premise of "unfinished business". The next year, that young man led the team to a national championship and won the Hobey Baker award. Ben Meyers has the opportunity to be the Jordan Leopold of his generation.

If someone could forward this to Ben Meyers, I would appreciate it. Thank you.

Yes, I know that's a pipe dream, but you can't blame a guy for wishful thinking...

That’s beautiful sentiment…but totally UNrealistic in 2022…sorry. You do realize Ben (whose my favorite player on the team by a wide margin) is literally the same age as Casey Mittelstadt, who is on the 5th year of getting paid vie NHL contract/signing bonuses.

Thanks for correcting me on that, he’s only played 3 years for the Gophers. Ben is the rare player who was arguably the 2nd best of all HS players in 2017 (behind only Casey)…then (still) played 2 full years in the USHL before arriving on campus.

Koster-C

Knies-C

Bob has shown he likes to do the two captain thing.

If Faber Stays he gets the C IMO

Hard to know who shows leadership qualities in the locker room. Some are great players but are not the type to lead.

Looking back now after a few days to cool off and reflect, I am thrilled with that season. It was a treat to watch. I even got to see them play in person 3 times. Something I haven't done in years. They also went 3-0 when I was in attendance, outscoring the opponents by a combined 14-3. Things obviously would have gone down differently if I had been able to make it to Boston.

If you told me we would lose laffer midway (whether injury, transfer, signing, or whatever) I would have said that contending probably isn't in the cards. Instead, they rallied around an inexperienced goaltender and surprised me, and I imagine many of you as well. Even with a great February run, I did not think a frozen four appearance was realistic.

Depending on how the departures shake out, I think we can be in a position to be right back in the mix at the end next year. I'm looking forward to another season talking hockey with all of you. As someone living in MN I can't believe I'm saying this, but October can't get here soon enough.

Biggest question is early departures, right after that for me is goalie. Close story is great, but not sure he’s good enough to beat the top teams. Most of his wins came against bottom of Big10. He was good against Western, not so good against Umass and Minnesota st.

Watching the top teams have guys that can weather the storm and not surrender goals has me wanting another goalie at least as insurance if Close doesn’t play well. No clue what we have in Boynton or Owen B.

Yes. Certainly not as much talk about the goaltending.

I was at one of the Michigan games when the Wolverines won easily. I didn’t think there was much comparison between the goalies and I don’t even know if Portillo is a solid NHL prospect.

He’s a third round pick, so he’s not like as highly sought as Carey Price or something but generally teams don’t draft goalies in the third round. Portillo also had one of the highest sv% in the NCAA this year.

It would be nice to see this program get an NHL caliber goalie at some point though. I think generally you should be fine with league average goaltending if the other parts of the roster are well assembled but you’d think at some point this program could get a goalie who can stick around in the NHL at some point.

Doesn't even need to be an NHL type guy. Remember how good Patterson and Wilcox were for us not too long ago? Patterson is retired and Wilcox got 1 NHL game in mop up duty and is currently a free agent.

You mean a Gopher player is actually OLD enough to drink alcohol legally at a bar? Who knew? Wink :conf2: LoL
