sure makes it seem like the local kids care more about the program (Knies excluded) and I think we should be careful about taking too many out of state kids
I apologize for the ignorance but a few people have mentioned that Cooley “lost the national championship game “. I was away at boot camp and didn’t get to watch the game in real time. I’ve only watched brief highlights once (I refuse to watch them ever again) so what are they referencing? Is there any legitimacy to those claims? Or is it just frustrated fans?
Casey Mittlestadt left after one year. So did Erik Johnson. So is Okposo. I’m all for the vast majority of the team being from Minnesota but I’m not sure how much that played into it for Cooley. Also, not once this past season did I question his commitment to the team or program. He gave it his all every night and it was a treat to watch.
Well when a local kid is a top 3 draft pick we’ll see but until then it’s not an accurate comparison.
Local boy Erik Johnson was the #1 pick and only stayed one season. Expecting more than one year out of the prodigy kids is setting yourself up for disappointment.
John Toews is a rare top 3 pick exception that comes to mind
all good points above, but will say all those guys leaving after one year were Lucia days. back then, almost all borderline guys left early (or too early)

Logan is a joy to watch. He is a hero if Snuggy hits the net in the 3rd period. I enjoyed watching him as much or more than Kessel and Vanek. (Probably not more than Vanek - he kind of did some big things in April 2003)
Really disappointed. It would have been awesome to see Cooley play for another year. We were lucky he played here for a year and I was shocked that he said he was coming back for another one. Can he at least still encourage his cousin to join the Gophers? Maybe even accelerate? I think there are some open forward slots.

He will be on the U17 team this year, he's still two years away.
The big problem with the timing of this is that it's now likely too late to bring in a transfer, which is what they would have needed to fill this void.
Bringing in someone like Hendrickson before he's ready isn't going to change much about this team and neither is a depth guy.

It would be nice if Mooney commits, but he is only 16 and zero chance he would come in this year. He needs to play against better competition at his age level this year. Eiserman has been the one people had hoped that he would accelerate his schooling to come in early as he has been dominate at every level so far. It will be interesting on which direction Bob goes, as Hendrickson was originally scheduled to come in, but with all of the forwards returning, he is set to play in the USHL. Sioux Falls spent a high draft choice on him and probably would not be thrilled to lose him. Add in the fact that the SF coach is Max Rud's dad, who is a friend of Bob's, that could be an interesting conversation between the two.
I was recently informed by a GPLer that I'm related to Airey

The main reason Hendrickson isn't on campus now is because the Gophers had too many returning forwards. No reason to believe he, as a 4th round NHL draft pick, can't come in to play for the Gophers. He won't be a direct replacement of Cooley, but if we can push Kurth or Lamb up a level so both are getting top three minutes, the Gophers AND Hendrickson should be successful.
I harken back to my college days as a chemistry major, and after my freshman year, I was also offered $13M. I turned them down, rather live in an apartment with 3 other guys and work towards my degree.
Of course, it was working with this guy,
so maybe I made the right call!
Were we not we all surprised when he decided to return, and it sounds like he was really tormented.
I am trying to recall the last "big name" gopher signed in mid to late summer — I seem to recall August.
I think what annoys me way more than anything is the fake money laundering front of an NHL org doing the full court press to sign him and… likely not even be competitive nor spend to the cap. Not saying it’s totally irrational on their part to try and get their high end asset in the system now and I realize Beniers isn’t a perfect comparable but it’s interesting to see how the orgs approach it.

I thought there was a cap on a rookie contract. These numbers, of course, change everything.

I thought so too, but above someone posted Fantilli's $$ and therefore I looked it up.
He has most of his contract in "bonus" money. Unclear what he needs to do to reach those levels. His base is around 900k each year with 3.5 million in potential bonus money each year.

Very helpful posts about ELC. so likely he will be making in the range of $1.2M (a pure guess), plus at age 22, assuming all goes as both he and the coyotes hope, it will be like this:

Puts things in perspective. He's guaranteed $2.7m at bare minimum. Hard to fault.
Wish him the best. Having him return would have been simply awesome but looks like he made the decision he felt was best for him. Curious what other forwards come in. Still excited as hell for the season.
I think this team still wins the Big 10 and is a 1 seed in the tourney. I gave Pitlick and Huglen a finisher on their line and i gave Moore and Snuggerud a greasy areas guy on their line. Makes the most sense to me. Would this team have been better with Cooley? yeah obviously, but this is still one juggernaut of a team in my opinion. Excited for the season is an understatement!
In terms of names to fill the roster the first one I’ve got is Will Schumacher of Prior Lake. Was a point per game on Axel Begley’s NAHL team. I remember watching him in the state tourney on Bump’s line, he’s a good player.
Another fun option for Gopher fans would be Tomek Haula, Erik’s brother. His numbers don’t jump out at you but it’s enough to warrant a depth add imo.
Mostly joking with Haula but I think they should seriously look into Schumacher.
Also interesting to note, former commit Jack Jensen is still in the portal (per GPL portal page). Wouldn’t be a terrible depth add. High school teammates with the Mittelstadts and probably knows others from various HP teams or elite league teams and such. So there might be a bit of a fit there.
Whether it is comin from him, or from his advisors- he sure is doing everything right after the fact. With the statement and sending money into/back to DTA, it makes it a little easier.
@boats easy way for him to fund Chipotle for the boys for the year. Clearly wasn’t an easy choice for him. Sucks but he does seem to truly have enjoyed his time here
