Aloha!
It’s interesting who they come up with each year locally. And how many guys in the NHL level, live locally, but dont play cause of something in their contract.
Keep your stick on the ice...

USA Hockey Olympic orientation camp will have some Gopher representation, five in all: Cooley and Knies up front, Faber, LaCombe, and Skjei on defense.

I find it interesting how Ryan Johnson has always flown more under the radar compared to LaCombe, when they were on the Gophers I saw them as close to equal in talent but with different skillsets. Maybe Johnson should’ve held out for free agency instead of signing with Buffalo, or maybe the pro game just demands that much more offense.
Ryan Johnson played 3 NHL games last season & 66 games in the AHL. Minor Leaguers don’t get invited to USA Olympic orientation camps. Jackson Lacombe played 75 NHL games last season and scored 43 points. That’s why he was invited. Not saying Ryan Johnson won’t have a bounce back season in 25-26. But them the facts.USA Hockey Olympic orientation camp will have some Gopher representation, five in all: Cooley and Knies up front, Faber, LaCombe, and Skjei on defense.

Johnson was a dependable college defenseman without a lot of wow factor. He doesn't have the offensive instincts of Lacombe or the skating range and body size of Faber. He's a bit of a tweener who might find it hard to carve out an NHL career.

obviously I was not saying that Johnson got snubbed from the Olympic camp, that’s an absurd reading of my post. I was commenting on their respective college and pro trajectories.
That’s not what I was meant to imply (that Johnson got snubbed). I was simply emphasizing that LaCombe had a breakout year & accordingly got invited to the camp (he won’t actually make the team tho) and Johnson had a particularly down year compared to his rookie season where he played 41 NHL games. I still think Johnson has the capability to carve out an NHL career as a Nick Schultz type of defender, similar to how Streaky referenced his college career (as being) & wish him all the luck in making that a reality.Ryan Johnson played 3 NHL games last season & 66 games in the AHL. Grant Cruikshank got married a week or so ago. Looking at the social media posts, he made a lot of friends on the Gophers team the year he was here. 2 of his former teammates, Knies and LaCombe were in the wedding party and a bunch more were at the wedding and the bachelor weekend. I remember the hugs in the handshake line after the Gophers eliminated SCSU in the regionals. Pretty emotional. Seems like he was a great teammate.

yeah, he was a fun player to watch in the maroon and gold. I really think if our 2021-22 team hadn’t been so deep at forward, he def could’ve had a Ben Meyers-style breakout year. Memory that sticks out is when Cruikshank (a Wisco native) scored to make it 8-0 on the Badgers in that final regular season game, then skated directly over to the students, repping the M on his jersey with such passion. Shades of Phil Kessel. I was happy to see he got his scoring touch back at SCSU.
Semi-related: I’ve been living in Chicago ever since I graduated from the U, and everyone here knows his mom (Bonnie Blair) as a speed-skating icon. Guess she was a star at the Univ. of Illinois too. Still waiting on that Fighting Illini NCAA D1 hockey program… would love to see some 12-0 Gopher blowouts in person close by
Lots of Gopher Hockey talk on this episode with former players and @eric-vegoe

Was randomly thinking earlier, it’s a bit weird the program doesn’t seem to want to acknowledge Rhett Pitlick as a Gopher hockey alum. I know he left in not the best manner, but I doubt anyone views him as a “real” Maverick alum; he did finish his degree at the U, and he was a part of many great Gopher hockey memories so far this decade beyond just being a very fun player to watch.
I remember the hype vid for the Michigan series this year conspicuously omitted his B1G tourney ankle-breaker in 2023, no congrats for his pro deal after the season, nothing. Even though they did post well-wishes for older Lucius as a former Gopher, and I think they might have even posted or RT’d something about Matt Staudacher who is playing in Italy now.
