I think Moore has looked good at times in the second half and was a bit snake bitten but yeah he's not Cooley lol, Cooley did what he did in his first and only year in the league. Moore looks like a guy who should prob return for year 3 but almost certainly won't if I had to guess.
Here are Moore and Rinzel's numbers in Chicago. They will play tomorrow vs Cooley and Utah @ 3pm.

Watching Rinzel and Moore take their rookie laps and then being interviewed makes me happy and sad at the same time. And, they will start the game.
Frank Seravalli said on the Hawks pregame show that he predicts that Rinzel will start next year in Chicago and not spend a day in the minors.

rinzel and Moore will get to pick up a bunch of minuses for their stats this year. That Chicago team is terrible

Can’t help thinking about how a lot of our biggest disappointments this year (PK and faceoff woes, getting outmuscled, defensive lapses in front of our net) would’ve been significantly alleviated if Nelson was still around.
Nelson was an underrated player for most of his career. He has elite penalty killing, faceoff, and playmaking ability if he is with guys that compliment his skill set. He is a two way center not a flashy dangle guy (although for his size he has very good hands). Some times you don't appreciate things until you see what their absence does. I think Koster and Huglen are also in this category
Snuggy will make his NHL debut tonight against the Red Wings. He will be on the 3rd line.
Zack Bolduc - Oskar Sundqvist - Jimmy Snuggerud
Waiting for Matthew Wood to make his debut. Last night would have made sense because the Preds were down a couple of forwards, but they played 7 defensemen instead.

So glad to see the post-goal skate to the bench remains unchanged. And agree, players like Nelson are rarely fully appreciated until you see the hole left when they move on.

I was hoping the game would go to a shootout with Jimmy winning it. That would have been classic..

LaCombe is having a pretty good year. He is 3rd on the team in points with 43.

I saw that last week and thought the same thing, which is pretty good because I remember when he signed one of the Anaheim beat writers had him as their 7th or 8th best prospect. My guess is they didn’t watch him play often.

There's been some real national buzz on LaCombe lately. You'll see him listed in a lot of most underrated players in the league lists because he plays on a team that nobody really cares about, but the Anaheim fans have been raving about him this year.
@jaykay3 Whenever I see this kind of stuff about LaCombe, Faber, Knies, and Cooley - two seasons removed from college - I think back to Tampa and ask, "How is it even possible that...."
There have been plenty, but that was the one that got away.
Good for LaCombe. He'll be signing a big contract.
I always feel like we need two or three NHLers to win the Natty. That 2023 team might have had four NHL all stars. If we win 20 titles by the time it is over for me, I will still think it should have been 21.

he was a better college player than Lane Hutson and even today they’re much closer in value than NHL commentators would have you think. LaCombe just plays for an irrelevant team, and Hutson plays for one of the most deluded massive fanbases.
I am not a Bob hater, but if these players we have in college are that elite at the NHL level (2023 team) how did we not win it all. I cannot keep the bitterness from that from spilling over. It may never leave

I’ve watched many (nearly equal in skill) Gopher teams put together similar overall records, go far in the playoffs, etc., but something about that team was special and can’t be put into words. Every single night they’d play with such confidence and in that 2nd half, you really thought they might never lose a game.

Why do the players always look bigger to me when they get to the NHL? Cooley always looked undersized when he played for the Gophers but with Utah he doesn't appear that way at all? Maybe the Gopher jerseys they where are too big?

Whenever I think about that team not winning the title I look at all the recent BC teams and their inability to also get it done. Makes me feel a little better but not much.
I care less about the BC team not getting it done but I understand your point completely I think. The teams are built similarly. Neither have been able to punch that final ticket for quite a few years. I still harp back to the Denver model. Less elite experienced players combined with a sprinkle of star dust in the flashy guys. Also need a very solid goalie. I am in the minority here that thinks we cannot blame the goalie for the end of our season. There are 5 players in front of him. Rarely did our goalie just give up a goal (yes, yes, you don't have to point out the one game S just lost his brain). There are no perfect players out there and you really cannot expect the goalie to make up for every lapse the team has. I think we had enough in net with the talent up front. The talent up front (front office?) did not get it done.
I wouldn’t blame the UMass loss on Souliere, the xG was 2.9 - 2.3 in favor of UMass, neither goalie had a great game, that’s not even getting into the refs and all that. That said it’d be nice to get above average goaltending in some of these big games. Denver’s goalie standing on his head three years ago to allow his team time to regather and eventually beat the cows in the NC game often gets overlooked.
It’s not like Motzko has never figured this out either, he had Lindgren and some other good goalies in SCSU. The ones he’s gotten here have been good but I also don’t think it’s a coincidence that some of these guys came here and saw their numbers improve significantly while playing behind NHL caliber Dmen (Laffer and Souliere).

This is one thing I've been thinking about the last week since our loss. What do teams like Denver have that we don't? It's not physical skills. The margins are razor thin there. To me it has to be some sort of mindset or mental conditioning. Does it help that Denver scores 1 goal and they think they will win the game? Yes. But why do they believe it? Is it the preparation, coaching, structure, confidence? I wish I knew the answer. I'm sure Bob does as well.
That '22-23 team did have the mindset that they were not going to lose. Up until 5 mins left in the 2nd of the NC and still almost pulled it off. One of my favorite memories from that season was the last regular season home game vs Ohio St. We had just shut them out the night before and Ohio St. came out looking to take some cheap shots. Knies and Snuggy took 5 min majors at the same time trying to fight back. They got 2 goals from the 5x3, but the rest of the night they didn't sniff a chance. We played with an attitude I had never seen before. I've said whatever energy that was we need to find more of it and harness it because if we play like that, we're nearly unstoppable.
Aloha!
Rinzel won’t play in the AHL. Moore won’t play center. He’s overmatched in the middle.
I’m not convinced Moore will stick in the NHL. Zero hockey sense.
Been a rookie kind of night for Rinzel and Moore. Moore sure looks like he’ll be in the AHL next year. Probably 50/50 on if he’s an nhler long term and definitely middle 6 at very best.
rinzel we’ll see if he gets his offensive game to that next level. Feels like they’ll try give him corners as he’s on the PP some
Moore might be better served as a winger at that level. His vision at times is decent but it isn’t consistent enough and probably gets exposed more at level. You also need to D up your (typically) oversized opposing center which he’s definitely gonna be overmatched at this age.
Jackson Lacombe made The Athletic’s list of most underrated defensemen
Snuggy with his 1st NHL point on a beauty of a pass with his Dad in the stands. Plus he had dinner with Crosby the night before.

I have to admit I hate this time of year when the Gophers (too often) are done and the Wild cannot seem to figure it out. That said, I will also admit I am surprised to see Wood in an NHL jersey. I would have put him with an AHL team at this point. Is that a contract thing previously negotiated? Am I missing how big an impact player he was? With Nelson in the AHL and playing sporadically I would thing Wood would be in that mix not NHL. Although I guess teams play entry players in NHL games when their playoff hopes are not solid? Enlightenment?

first rounder so they want to have him rostered and not risk him leaving next year so guessing this was his side of the deal in signing to burn the year. Where he starts next year will be more telling

Good for Mason! I know it is low minors, but guys can have really nice professional hockey careers in the ECHL. Former Gopher Reggie Berg played for years for the Florida Everblades in Ft Myers and is (was) their career point leader and has a banner hanging in Hertz Arena.
