If the punch to the face is from a tie, that’s pretty damn nice. Hope they figure this finishing thing out.
I will agree with you there.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
I don't hate airey by any stretch, but I do not think he gives this team the best chance to win.
I hope we ride souliere down the stretch
Airey had a 95% SV % tonight and gave up 1 goal. Can't blame this one on the goalie.
I was recently informed by a GPLer that I'm related to Airey
And the one goal was not off an AK stick.I don't hate airey by any stretch, but I do not think he gives this team the best chance to win.

Dominating teams but not putting them away is a 1st world problem but a problem nonetheless

I still think we give Airey time to grow and develop but I have to agree with some posters on here that he doesn’t strike me with a ton of confidence right now.
He does give his team a chance to win most nights which I guess is all you can ask for. But at the same time his team is playing VERY well defensively in front of him.
So @frozen4champs you have all the answers, who would you start tomorrow?
Honestly the Gophers should have a top recruit for a goalie every year. Alaska played like they were on the penalty kill almost the entire game. I expect the Gophers will have a much better performance tomorrow night.

I'm not the coach, but I would start Souliere. Not because Airey played poorly, but we need to keep both goalies fresh. Also, just because I defended Airey, doesn't mean I think he should play every game. I just don't get the hate towards Airey. I guess some of you need someone to replace Pino on the hate list. Also, the over reaction after Airey gave up the LONE goal in the game is comical. I'm sure you want Bob fired as well....

These Alaska uniforms are brutal to look at. They look like Euro firefighter uniforms.
Never seen hockey helmets with the player # on side and the logo on the other side. It took me a good minute to figure it out from row 25.
Keep your stick on the ice...
Gophers in shootouts make my eyes bleed
Agree... there's no momentum to their skating. It's just an afternoon skate from the centerline to the top of the crease. There's no fooling the goalie. You could put a 60-year-old beer league goalie in and he probably could block the shot.
Keep your stick on the ice...
Very decent crowd for being a Holiday weekend, minus the students and the band.

Was going to mention this also, solid crowd tonight.
A little hard to know what to think about that game. Gophers AGAIN play well enough to win and dominated the vast majority of the game yet cannot get it done. Unlucky? A little on this one I think yes. The goalies both played well and one was luckier than the other (last second scrum?? Could have had multiple things called there). Still feel that they are trying to play too pretty, one too many passes at times but last night were in the paint fighting too and still just wasn't going our way. Looking forward to tonight
As someone else mentioned, the Gophers had 2 really dominate possessions, one in the 2nd and another in the 3rd where they controlled and cycled the puck for what seemed like a couple of minutes. Just could not finish. Also, the Alaska goalie reminded me of the old Denver goalie, Wallinheimo, as he is a bit of a showboat.

He had a couple of showboat moments...Fleury can get like that, too. Some of it is just being fired up which is probably not a bad thing for goalies.
I'm no pairwise expert but it seems to me the Gophers keep playing these bottom teams that can only improve their pw while MN can only go down. Of course, the inferior teams can play only one way...one very boring way: Defensive structure that includes obstruction holding and hoping you don't get caught.
Micheletti was right last night. The Gophers hold the puck too long. That plays into the hands of a clutch-and-grab team.

I think this team may have more overall depth than 2 years ago but we do miss having a Knies and Cooley that can take over the game at times.

Kind of like you and PJ Fleck. You’re the Paul Allen of Gopher Hockey. Blind homerism.

I feel very good about the Gophers top 4 or 5 defenseman in a one and done NCAA game this year. Chesley, Rinzel, and Thomas are pretty damn good college defenseman.
But like you said, the offense might lack a total game changer. Lot of time before that though for someone to break out.
It is a baffling paradox that a team with the top end skill of the Gophers leading scorers has struggled mighty in shoot outs for several years. Logically it doesn’t make sense. Shoot-outs are largely for the fans in attendance. 3x3 OT wins/losses are nearly as contrived too…If this team ever scores a shootout goal I will celebrate like the Vikings won the Super Bowl.

Once in awhile someone just needs to step up and be that person. They are all being way too Minnesota nice trying set someone else up. A little selfishness now and then is okay. Stop waiting for the perfect shot all the time and create your own chances. So many times I felt I was scratching my head on why a guy passed when it clearly wasn’t going to work instead of just firing it on net and looking for a rebound.
Let’s get in there and get some greasy goals. A couple pretty ones too for some icing on the cake. Gophers rebound and it’s a Culver’s night. Who’s with me?!

I don't care about the rest of the game stats or storylines. If a goalie gives up one goal in regulation and OT, the loss is not his fault. Full stop.

Jerseys were made by New Balance. I can't recall any team in any sport that New Balance made the jerseys for.
Especially when that "Loss" is in all matters that count, a tie. If this had been a conference game, yes, the shootout has meaning in the conference standings, but, for non-conference, it's utterly meaningless.
B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?
They definitely slowed down after getting frustrated early. Hope they get their passing back and move the puck better instead of shooting from anywhere. Baffling the level of players the gophers have that can’t do a deke on a goalie. It’s every year. Brodzinski last year said none of them had any moves to do a shoot out. What? Top players should have enough pride to practice on their own to do -a- move. Skating in slow and stick handle fast then rip a shot is about 20% effective. They can practice on dry land, anywhere. Make a move wide and across the other way, one move, if the goalie moves you get an opening, under neath or either side.
That's what I just don't get. How a team as talented as the Gophers typically are can go nearly a decade and score like 1 or 2 Shootout goals... not getting shootout wins, just getting A goal twice.
B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?
Sky isn’t falling even though Scooby Doo is on the ledge.
Lots of shots and scoring opportunities. Both goalies played great. Four posts rung. Could easily have been 4-0 or 5-0. Chillax people.
Top 5 loss but no harm.
I dont think anyone is on a ledge over this...its a tie against a cruddy team in November its hardly anything new. We have all seen NC teams lose or tie games they shouldn't its part and parcel with the game. Better teams than this one have had similar results it is predictable.
The point I was making was that anyone who dared say the team wasn't as good as their numbers because they played a mediocre schedule early on got grief over it and this is why we were saying take a breathe. It is way too early to think the team is world-beaters or that they are terrible. There was inevitably going to be a period where the team was going to struggle which will be annoying and frustrating (but completely normal) and it will be much easier to deal with if you stop pretending this team is the 1985 Oilers. (I am obviously using a bit of hyperbole but there were people pondering if this was the best Gopher Team ever which is ludicrous this early) Players go cold, goalies get hot, teams get lazy or worn out and injuries happen. The difference between good teams and great teams is the great teams weather the storm and come out the other side better. (the 2002 Team didn't win a Friday game for a month in January...but never got swept either)
I have zero doubt the team will learn from this and in a month we will have forgotten all about it but I also honestly don't think we are as good as our record or our stats. Right now it feels like something is missing...
So @frozen4champs you have all the answers, who would you start tomorrow?
Are you this standoffish in real life? Whether it is coming at me because of a point I made about a Gopher Basketball player entering the draft last year or your coming after anyone who dares defend Airey I wonder...you do you but I am not sure you are getting across the point you think you are and you just sound argumentative. If frozen is Paul Allen you are Dan Barreiro or Pat Reusse.
If a goalie gives up 1 goal (and it was off his teams stick) and you blame the goalie for the tie that is definitely your right but you are going to be rather lonely on that island. If we faced a goalie and he had a 95% save percentage I highly doubt anyone would be ripping said goalie and likely would be talking about how he had a horseshoe up his butt and how he made the game closer than it was.
If you think Airey is a problem go back and watch Adam Hauser...and that guy won a National Title.
I don't hate airey by any stretch, but I do not think he gives this team the best chance to win.

Seriously...
bEsT GoPhEr TeAm EVAH!!!! 🤣 😉
The Gophers seem hell bent on making the other teams look better than they are. I'm sure someone will talk about how their goalie was lights out...but most goalies are lights out against us it seems. Either we just are that unlucky or we just aren't playing that great.
Obviously it isn't the end of the world but the recent play of the team is why I said you don't crown teams "the best" in October or November.
No one was crowning them in October but go ahead and create your narrative.
Souliere in. Nevers out.

I like giving Michel some more ice time, I feel like he has earned it. Someone mentioned early griping sticks too tight, I agree. It s a long season, and minor setbacks happen. Just keep working hard and with the talent that’s on this team, good things will happen! Go Gophers!
Nevers took a hit in the 3rd period last night which looked like it might have been from behind. This could be why he is out tonight.
Edit:
Nevers is out until after Christmas.
Motzko had a great answer to why he lost so much weight this offseason. Involves the ASU coach chirping him.
crap. That’s too bad for Nevers. Hate that for the end of their career guys when they wind up missing extended time. Hopefully he’ll be able to get back up to speed quickly in the second half
Barry Trotz (current Nashville GM) walking around the concourse pregame. Assuming he is catching a couple periods of Matthew Wood then going to the X for the Predators and Wild tonight.
It would have been nice if the refs would have called a penalty on the play. There were multiple times last night where the refs swallowed their whistle which helps the team without the puck defend and keep the game close.
Barry Trotz is here.
The way Alaska celebrated the shootout I feel like they maybe think they got their win on the weekend. Bury them early. Set the tone that it won’t be a defensive battle this time around.

I hope he agrees with me that Wood’s skating is nowhere near NHL caliber
Oh, and for the love of God, can we score first tonight?
Another post
Moore hits the post.
The posts have been the Alaska goalie's best friends.
Sigh. 1-0 Alaska. Wood denied on the breakaway
Incredible how this team never finds a way to score first.
Another post from Moore
@olivia Nevers got hurt in the 3rd period last night.
Wood gets stopped on a break away.
Alaska has a force field in front of their net and they score on a blind shot at the other end. This is frustrating to watch.
Getting killed on draws again
