Watch Rinzel during the OT winner celebration. Looks like no weight on 1 leg.

He just took a shot off the ankle I’d be limping too😂. He’s icing it right now he’ll be fine by tomorrow. A bruise on the leg is a helluva long way from the heart you know!

How good has Oliver Moore been since returning from the World Juniors?

  • 12pts in 18 games before WJC = 0.66 PPG
  • 15pts in 9 games after WJC = 1.66 PPG

And just the overall improvement in his play with cutting down turnovers and not skating into traffic with tunnel vision so much. You can tell he has now settled into the level of play and that offensive ability that led to him being a 1st round pick is coming out.

Bend but don’t break was the story tonight. Chance for a statement weekend tomorrow. Boy are Hastings teams hard to beat.

Gophers allow 1 goal to a top 5 team on the road. They also win in OT. I will take it.

That game was a bit like putting a bad swing on a golf shot that goes in the hole. Not pretty but they'll  take it.

Wisconsin has a damn good team this year.

they’re a Hastings team with mediocre scoring. We know how this ends

The Badgers are the 12th highest scoring team out of 64 playing in the toughest conference. They clearly are not mediocre in scoring.

Tonight they ran into a team who played well defensive for two periods (just like they did) and a goalie who was a brick wall when needed.

You can sense how stunned their fans were.  If not for our fans there, it would have been as quiet as a public library after that goal.

Haven't checked Xitter, but the official Instagram account has two more angles:

Wisconsin has a damn good team this year.

By going to the portal & bringing in a bunch of new players. I think i counted 8 seniors & older as well. Hastings woukd not have the same success if he inherited the team from last year. The portal should be regulated better.  It creates a new dynamic that i do not think is good for college hockey/sports. Only 2 or 3 per year max.

IIRC, a lot of those players followed Hastings from Mankato, which is a part of the reason the portal was created. I do ask to correct if I am wrong on my take.

I get your thought but there is a bigger dynamic at play. You recruit guys, they commit & now you tell them so long?  We are replacing you with a new guys from the portal. There is a head coach of another conference that recruited a player. This player struggled for a while. The coach worked hard with this player getting him to play much better. The player then left the team via the portal. There should be some kind of system to avoid teams & players being left high & dry.

This is the best I think Close has played all year.  That is the biggest positive that I took out of this game.  The gophers had a great 1st period and I believe were outplayed the last two.  I’m unsure as to what causes the mid-game apathetic nature.  Hopefully everything can get sorted out before the playoffs. Happy for a road win, let’s get one tomorrow night!

Yeah I don’t really believe in jinxes but I didn’t want to test that out too bad either 😂 so I didn’t say anything during the game. But he had a poor game the first game at Mariucci vs them and got outplayed in the second game. This one makes up for that imo he stole this win.

This happens at jobs every day.

Hockey teams aren't more important than jobs. Well they are to us 🤣 but they aren't to society as a whole.

Sure, it's a free country, but the change in policy has rewarded teams like WI that is coming off a terrible coaching staff and mediocre recruiting. Instead of paying for its failure, they're rewarded by filling out a shopping list of players from all over the place, and a lot of those guys have kids!

I understand your point of view, but there's no denying it helps teams like North Dakota, MI State, and WI, three teams that were bubble teams or worse last year, while hurting the top recruiting schools that remain loyal to their  younger recruits. I can accept the reality of the new NCAA and not like it one bit.

21-year-old freshmen, NIL, and transfer portal insta-teams are all a net negative for me.

I’m curious with Hasting’s system and older players vs. wisconSIN’s Board of Reagents. How will both work together and still look good for the college.

Closer is having a really good season.

His saves % for the season is 91.9 which is the 10th best. Of the 9 goalies ahead of him only 4 have been full time goalies this season like he is.

He has done this with 4 of the top 5 D men on the team being under classmen and being on a team that by nature is more offensive minded. The Gophers make up is always to be a more offensive minded team.

Wisconsin goalie 93.0

RIT goalie 93.0

Notre Dame goalie 93.0

Boston College goalie 92.5

You have 2 goalies at .900 SV PCT, but another goalie at .950 SV PCT. They are behind 3 separate doors. I ask you to choose a door. You say, "I choose door one." I say, I will take away a door, say...door 2. That door takes away one of the .900 goalies. Do you switch your choice from door one to door three?"

And now here comes the thunder response of rage from the masses. Grin

Monty Hall Problem

The Monty Hall problem is named for its similarity to the Let's Make a Deal television game show hosted by Monty Hall. The problem is stated as follows. Assume that a room is equipped with three doors. Behind two are goats, and behind the third is a shiny new car. You are asked to pick a door, and will win whatever is behind it. Let's say you pick door 1. Before the door is opened, however, someone who knows what's behind the doors (Monty Hall) opens one of the other two doors, revealing a goat, and asks you if you wish to change your selection to the third door (i.e., the door which neither you picked nor he opened). The Monty Hall problem is deciding whether you do.

The correct answer is that you do want to switch. If you do not switch, you have the expected 1/3 chance of winning the car, since no matter whether you initially picked the correct door, Monty will show you a door with a goat. But after Monty has eliminated one of the doors for you, you obviously do not improve your chances of winning to better than 1/3 by sticking with your original choice. If you now switch doors, however, there is a 2/3 chance you will win the car (counterintuitive though it seems).

The portal doesn't hurt programs like Minnesota. Motzko had just as much of a chance to bring in a few players in the off-season and he chose not to.  Minnesota is a destination school and if anything they should be able to benefit from the portal if they choose to use it.

Jack LaFontaine and Grant Cruikshank were both recent transfers. Jack leaving mid season and Grant not having a good year may have turned coach off a little bit from going after transfers but coach has said some things this season that has caused me to think he is warming up to the idea of taking a transfer or two from the portal. I wouldn't be surprised if in the next few years we have a couple of transfers come in.

The team has a good chance to end up with a top 2 seed in the NCAA tournament for the 4th year in a row. Two of the past three seasons they been a one seed with the other year being a two seed.

Over the past three years they have won the most NCAA tournament games (6).

They are a ticking time bomb. It's only a matter of time before they go off on some opponent especially with the way Ollie has improved this season. Which by the way is just what Cooley did last year taking his game to a whole another level after getting his feet wet in the first half of the season. Even really good players often need some games to acclimate to the Big Ten.

After the CC loss I mentioned that Snuggy and Pitlick were both even for the season. Do they read GPL?

Since then in 8 games they are both +7. Ollie scoring has certainly been a factor but they also have done a good job of not being scored upon much over the past 8 games.

Moore leads the team at +17 for the season. No other forward is above +7. Huglen is worst on the team at -5.

The Top D are Rinzel at +13 and Thomas at +12.

IIRC, a lot of those players followed Hastings from Mankato

Three players followed Hastings and are three of their top 7 in scoring for the season.

Breaking news-- Jess made it to Madison. Here is the post game scrum. I also like that Bob admitted that it was not a perfect game and said they have a lot of things to clean up for tonights game.

Bob clearly not thrilled with that second period and rightfully so. Glad that last night didn’t have to be a loss to be “a teaching moment” but let’s hope that the boys come out and play a solid 60 tonight. Wisconsin is going to come out firing and if we do what we did last night I don’t feel confident in getting the win.

For as good of a school that UW is their students aren’t very bright. Whether it’s in regards to the basic rules/fundamentals of hockey, the classification of a lake, or their own significance in the Big Ten. I’ll never forget when a Badger fan told me that their biggest rival in football was Ohio State and they didn’t really care about Minnesota. Granted, they owned that rivalry for a long time but the idea that they were even on Ohio State’s radar is laughable.

Wisconsin has a damn good team this year.

they’re a Hastings team with mediocre scoring. We know how this ends

The Badgers are the 12th highest scoring team out of 64 playing in the toughest conference. They clearly are not mediocre in scoring.

Tonight they ran into a team who played well defensive for two periods (just like they did) and a goalie who was a brick wall when needed.

they’re 5th in scoring in the big ten. We are not a defensive shutdown conference, there are a lot of goals scored. They’re tied for first in the country in GA with no other big ten team in the top ten. That’s a shutdown defensive team a la Hastings style and it’s very heartening to see us beat them on a day they played well. They’re going to need to beat at least one team like that if they’re going to make a run postseason

edit: just to clarify, the Badgers are an extremely good team, as have the teams been that Hastings has coached recently. It will take someone playing an incredibly solid defensive game and capitalizing on their chances to bounce them at the end of the year (exactly how St Cloud bounced Mankato last year and what Denver did 2 years ago in the title game). They're 1-2 top end scorers away from being an absolute wagon.

This one was a measuring stick game to me about how far the Gophers have come in their defensive game and structure. We didn't play well at all in the 2nd but you don't play great every period against great teams, but have to weather the storms. They did last night and got a big road win. They'll need exactly that in the postseason.

21-year-old freshmen, NIL, and transfer portal insta-teams are all a net negative for me.

watching Michigan state right now, they may very well be a bubble team when it’s said and done right now

If you now switch doors, however, there is a 2/3 chance you will win the car (counterintuitive though it seems).

d_1 d_2 winning probability
pick stick 1/3
pick switch 2/3

There was a dude on another forum who argued for 2 days that these probabilities were wrong 😂

The Gophers have the second fewest penalty minutes per game at 6.8

Without looking I bet the team with the fewest will surprise people.

Spoiler
6.6
North Dakota

I get your thought but there is a bigger dynamic at play. You recruit guys, they commit & now you tell them so long?  We are replacing you with a new guys from the portal. There is a head coach of another conference that recruited a player. This player struggled for a while. The coach worked hard with this player getting him to play much better. The player then left the team via the portal. There should be some kind of system to avoid teams & players being left high & dry.

This happens at jobs every day.

Hockey teams aren't more important than jobs. Well they are to us 🤣 but they aren't to society as a whole.

Thats why so many jobs make you sign a non-compete document.  I get what you’re saying, I do, but I also think some things will shake out in the process and “some” limitations may be placed on transfers.

Note: Due to inflation dirty deeds will no longer be done dirt cheap.
