Tonight's crowd is the largest regular season crowd (2nd largest overall) in Mariucci history.
Tomorrow's crowd will likely be larger than tonight.
Coach has brought the team back to the top and the crowds are back too.

Nowhere near record attendance but 75% is selling it short. Probably closer to 90.
The boys looked solid! I hope they keep this momentum rolling, good things will come!
I had friend from church text me Wednesday asking if he could borrow a Gopher Hockey jersey because he was going to the game tonight. It was his first Gopher Hockey game. he wore the jersey Thursday to work and wore tonight. He text me saying he had a blast and totally understands my enthusiasm for Gopher hockey.

There’s something about the crowd when the team kills of a big penalty. Especially a 5x3. The anticipation and excitement builds and builds. Glad they were able to preserve the shutout for Close. He saved their bacon on those penalties.

Some guy took some liberties with Moore in the third and Strobel put him into next week. I approve.

Listening during the game, Frank/Pat/Wally were pretty much saying that Strobel was likely to get some backslaps in the locker room after the game for that hit. Up 3-0 already, you don't just take the PP when someone takes out one of your stars on a play like that... you bury them into the wall (just avoid CFB/head/etc)Some guy took some liberties with Moore in the third and Strobel put him into next week. B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?
Definitely a nice win but the powerplay has been a disaster as of late. No idea why they keep putting Huglen out on the top unit instead of Pitlick. Huglen is a nice two way player but he’s been awful on the PP, including a passing the puck to an empty point tonight. Also thought Koster had a tough game tonight but overall a great effort by the team. Let’s do it again tomorrow and cash one on the PP to start building some confidence.
Couple of thoughts--
1. I thought no one cared about B1G Hockey...
2. They called "player in the crease" twice tonight.. coincidence?
3. Please stop trying to do the wave...
4. Snuggy is getting frustrated. He needs to pop a couple on Saturday.
5. Learned a new chant from the Edina youth behind us. Blind and Deaf, I want to be a Ref.

PP units tonight were bizarre. And not effective. Rinzel and Pitlick together on what I think is the 2nd unit? Koster and Luke M on 1st?
Don’t overthink it. Put Snuggy, Pitlick, Rinzel out together.
Gophers are 8th for PWR. Remaining games for Minnesota and the current 5-7 in PWR:
- Wisconsin: (1 game) Notre Dame 19, OSU 29, PSU 22, MSU 6 (average PWR of 16.5)
- Michigan State: (1) Michigan 11, OSU 29, Wisconsin 5 (15)
- Denver: UMD 25, Miami 44, SCSU 16, CC 15 (25)
- Gophers: (1) PSU 22, Notre Dame 19, Michigan 11 (17.3)
Denver has the least favorable remaining schedule as far as trying to boost the PWR via SOS is concerned.
I know but it’s a shame. There were enough empty seats to make out the gold M.Its always had been, tickets sold.
That place used to be packed.

Even in the mid to late 90s the building was full, but never packed. Especially between the blue lines.
The best thing the “U” did was move the students together. I remember sitting on the opposite end of the current student section. You always felt out of sync. By time you realized what cheer they were doing, it was to late to join.
Though, I do remember the Saturday mornings when tickets would go on sale to the general public. Calling and calling, being on hold and when you finally got through quickly list the games you wanted before they sold out.

It was a great crowd. It’s aggravating that not all the season tickets holders show up, but the U is trying to implement things like the Credit Up program.
Fish wasn't kick out of the game and got a breakaway coming out of the penalty box. If he would have scored the building would have gone absolutely NUTS.
Cmon man
Championship play from Close last night. He was on fire, if that continues I like the Gophers chances against anybody. Win it all in St. Paul. Go Gophers!

The crowd was not great. They were loud after goals and certainly loud after the penalty kills in the second but there were long periods of time where it was just the sound of 7,000 mumbling people.
Ive been to games in Duluth and Madison this year and the game at Mariucci had the least exciting atmosphere. The opponent certainly played a roll as the game was never in doubt but the crowd wasn’t great by any means.
I HATE the “F opponent” chant and that seemed to be the student section’s calling card.
The Duluth crowd at Amsoil? Were we at different road games? Give me a break. You’re just flat out incorrect if you think the crowd for that game was better.
I will get off your lawn now.
Even when it was packed a common characteristic/complaint of the Mariucci crowd was that it was a relatively quiet one during game play. The cheers were more inventive though, I’ll give you that.

i mean we scored twice immediately then not again until the third. I do agree the atmosphere can be quiet though. The student section does need to figure things out with chanting something other than F whoever we’re playing. There are far too many other historical things you can rip on the schools we play for to default to something that dumb

I'll agree I hate the F whoever chant. So uncreative and trashy. Students - do better.
I'll disagree about last night's crowd. Was over 75% full and the crowd was into it. The 6pm start doesn't help either. I didn't think the Amsoil crowd was much better. They also pipe in a lot of noise there.

I was just going to say this. It was a group of kids trying to have fun. They were one section away from the students so it was easy to get them involved. Let them have their fun, you don’t have to participate.
Listening to the radio broadcast, you could easily hear the crowd for much of the game, with the chants and such. It was LOUD, especially during the 5x3 portion of the game.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
I think that, for the non-students (And some of the students as well), the crowd knows hockey and are watching and analyzing. Some other opponents don’t know hockey, and are more boisterous in their ignorance.Even when it was packed a common characteristic/complaint of the Mariucci crowd was that it was a relatively quiet one during game play. If Fish would have scored the building would have been (close to) as loud as that goal against Wisconsin to win the WCHA a number of years ago.

I know it's not the end of the world, and I would rather have kids fill the arena and have fun and have them come back. But, the old man in me would prefer they do it during intermissions or when they are in timeouts. We are in one of the sections where they put the kids groups in. The kids behind us last night were actually pretty good and were telling another kid the Pitlick family tree and how Tyler Pitlick fit in with Rem and Rhett.

yeah we have a lot of youth hockey kids get put in our section as well. My only gripe is the up and down all game from some groups/parents. Them doing the wave is the least of my concern as long as they’re not doing it in a one goal game late and obstructing my view while I’m biting my nails.

I've been so impressed by the students this season. Been a season ticket holder longer than may have been alive and the entire atmosphere is made by that group of young people. When they split up the students "back in the day" it was criminal.
What were the students yelling later in the 5 on 3s? Block that kick? On his head? Or maybe something F word wouldn’t surprise me.
I’ll keep offering to help teach some of the older creative cheers if someone can get me in touch with the leaders of the student section since I don’t do the social media. 🤷♀️
it’s at least nice to see them gradually pick up on some stuff like the opposing player introductions.
For those who’d like to join:
after announcing the goalie, you yell; “sieve” (with appropriate arm motion)
first player: “hack” (cross your arms in front of you, much like the signal for interference)
second player: “who’s he?”
third player: “never heard of him!”
fourth plater: “go home!”
fifth player: “who cares!”
head coach: “nice tie!” (The students elaborate on that one a bit adding a word for the end of the gastrointestinal tract). 😂
Our PP drop pass/slingshot in the neutral zone transformed into a drop bank pass off the side boards last night. It did not go well. That experiment can end real quick.

They yelled "Pull Your Sieve" a lot last night throughout the game.
They were really into the 5x3. That was good to see.

that’s kinda what it sounded like, but why would they yell that while we were fighting in front of Close on a 5 on 3 PK?
Safe to say Mason Nevers is back to himself. Obviously his numbers aren’t gonna be there at the end of the year when you look back but he’s playing that crafty, confident heady Mason Nevers style that we’ve all grown accustomed to see over the years. I thought he was fantastic tonight.
I hope he comes back for a 5th year (Covid season rule makes it a possibility).
We only have two juniors this season (Pitlick and Huglen) so having another senior next season would be a good thing.
Fish?? 😁

They tried to get it going DURING the 3-5 kill. I don’t know about anyone else but my eyes were glued to the ice, not paying attention to the crowd. Sure fun is good, but it was poor timing.
Note: Due to inflation dirty deeds will no longer be done dirt cheap.

I am still not convinced the slingshot accomplishes much. I am waiting for it to backfire. A fad perhaps. Maybe someone has better insight.
Loud and proud crowd. I was very disappointed in the empty seats at puck drop. But judging by the 2 guys next to us, how many doofuses thought it was a 7:00 start? They showed up at 6:40 😂
Gophers up 2 and they’re both like “when did the game start?”

I wondered about that too. We made it to the lots at 5:30 and breezed right in. Expected it to be a clusterfu€k at that point. By my bad math the arena was more than 75% full but less than 90%. How’s that? 😉
It also was a big challenge getting through the lobby at 6pm at least on the football stadium side. People were out the door almost and the parking lots weren't great either.

If we split the difference and go with 82.5 % and the amount of tickets sold was 10,750 how many fans were in the building? No using a calculator/phone/computer and you must show your work. 😆

Lets see, add ten, carry the one, divide by fifteen…
Too lazy to scroll back to find out where mentioned, but to answer the question why STH who can’t go to many games keep their tickets - for one if you give up your tickets you lose ALL your gopher score points and have to start over.
I had to give up my tickets for a couple years when I lost my job. Had to re start collecting gopher score points. Another lovely tactic this great university uses to screw its diehards.

I hate nitpicking after good wins, but I share the same feelings on that slingshot play (and the PP in general). We need to find a top efficient PP unit that we can count on in the NCAAs.

They are going to have a REALLY rude awakening if they show up at 6:40 again today. 🤣

People say they hate to do it but have no problem doing it. 😉 Every game is going to have some area that struggled a bite. Quinnpiac's power play in their 4 NCAA tournament games last year was 1 for 12 (8.3 %).
The Power Play for the season is 13th (out 64 teams) against the 3rd hardest schedule.
The slingshot play is used by quite a few teams. It didn't work yesterday but that doesn't mean it is a bad idea.
I too would like to see the Power Play score today but when your opponent only gives you two or third power plays there is a good chance you don't get a power play goal.
Depending on who was on the ice when the penalty was taken has a big impact on who starts the power play and then who comes out after the first group. Often you aren't able to get your top 5 guys all together.
BTW I am just using your post to make some relevant comments I have no issue with your overall thoughts.
