This pic frames the game that should of been but never will be. Actual skill vs. skill.

I'm fine with the McKay Hobey, Levi Richter. View the Richter as best goalie of the year and Hobey rewards a great career.

In that sense Laf win was fine too.

I don't understand the Mankato hate. They are good... And a win is a win and a title would be a title.

So if Hastings was hypothetically the coach of the Gophers, would he not even recruit guys like Cooley and Lucius?? Would he just go with the older guys? Honest question.

Hastings is an outstanding hockey coach. He would take the talent in a heartbeat if given the chance. Can't imagine he loves teaching a junior gold level of hockey, but he's clearly smart enough to figure out what he has to do to compete with good college teams.

I’ve said it before and will continue to say it, McKay is the Tim Tebow of college hockey. I doubt he will ever see a AHL ice sheet, my honest opinion.

I am the official Iowa Hawkeye football fan of GPL!

I swear this couldn’t be any more boring! Denver is playing just awful and Mankato only scored on a PP? For F’s sake, the ice team is more interesting.

Note: Due to inflation dirty deeds will no longer be done dirt cheap.

Well, roughly 40 games a season and the opportunity to play 5 years.

College sports are slowly dying overall. It’s no longer for the love of the game.

And McNeely’s 174th NCAA game as well, after 118 games in the USHL. I guess he’s trying to milk this for as long as possible. Since that prestigious Mankato degree will have him back to selling nut cups at Total Hockey after this season

Joke as you may, McNeely played a damn good game Thursday vs the Gophers & his play will be important tonight for the Mavs ☝️

Don’t have to like this strategy or style though. Prefer a skill game. Not a clog the middle check everyone off the puck game.

When it comes to the postseason & especially the NCAA tourney, the style that’s won (the past decade) has trended defensive, tight checking, low scoring…like it or not.

Maybe NHL, but he will get a shot in the A 100%.

5 years in a row a MN team has been in the final. 3 different MN teams. There is the Gopher problem.

They’re missing from the picture.

Track the Gopher record against them over the last 5 plus years and it makes sense. They've been the 4th best team in MN on average over the period. And the others have been at historical peaks.

Then the Gophers or Denver should try exerting some skill.

Mankato’s D are standing the rush up at the red line because they know every forward is skating at all times and busting their ass coming back.

It isn’t their job to make it easy on opponents.

Denver had a few sniffs later in the 2nd. We will see what they can muster up in the 3rd.

Agreed. They're 60-10-1 over the past two seasons, made the Frozen Four last year and are playing for the title tonight. If my team brings home a trophy I'm not concerned with style points.

Maybe enough with disparaging the education gained from MSU. I transferred from UM to MSU and double-majored in International Business and Political Science with a minor in International Relations. I'm doing just fine.

Plus there’s plenty of teams who play the same style and are at home watching. They are executing to a T.

I have no desire to see my team play that style of hockey and if the Gophers went that route I might check out. When the Wild did that garbage it was painful to watch and it's painful to watch with Mankato. Hats off to them and yeah win is a win, but this game has been far from exhilarating.

Oh and for all the hand-ringing around here the Gophers won 3 NCAA games the past 2 seasons - without looking I'd say that's probably Top 5 or 10 in the country. They went further than every MN team but 1 this season. They won a conference title. All of this despite massive odds stacked against them, and now have arguably the best class coming in next season in the country.

I want to see them win a NC as badly as anyone but I feel they're as close to getting there as they've ever been - the Mankato system or not.

I was kinda rooting for Mankato as my wife works for a MNSCU school but I can’t pull for this kind of boring ass play so I shall remain neutral…

They also come to mind when you think of "the dead puck era" and a reason the NHL almost folded.

They found a way to beat the system. Then the system changed.

Maybe NCAA figures out how to not have a bunch of 25YO on a college hockey team. ;)

It’s not hate. At least not from me. I just don’t like the style or strategy and think you should age out of college sports by the time you could have a PhD. But, they’re not breaking any rules and can certainly do it. If this was the Gopher style I’d struggle with it also.

Can’t agree with this post more. I don’t drive down from the Iron Range to watch 5 guys behind the red line. One game does destroy the trajectory of a program.

I liken it to a 7-3 NFL game with good defense. If there is a good D on the ice, and executed well, it is a beauty to watch. I can enjoy an 8-5 game just as much as a 1-0 game. I don't NEED "ALL THE OFFENSE ZOMG!" for it to be entertaining.

Amazing how mediocre this Mankato team looks and how mediocre the Hobey winner looks when they can't sit back and trap or hook or hold or trip without getting called for penalties.

5 more mins and Denver sends the Mav players home to check on their children and make sure their retirement funds are well balanced. Can't be too aggressive at their ages.

Huh…lots of things changed pretty quick? So this end all be all Mankato team still hasn’t won the NCAAs? Just like that, they are like everyone else but Denver. Losing their last game if the season. I wonder if that means their program sucks and they need to change to an offensive style?
