honestly, they're more fun to watch than the birds. I watched them build what we refer to as the "apartment complex" because so many live there. Took them about a week to tear down (literally tote the previous one down to the base tree) and rebuild. it was very cool watching them work as a team of three or four.

The birds I do care about - crows, orioles, chickadees, goldfinches, cardinals, juncos - have a different food supply (orioles, finches), prefer what the squirrels drop (cardinals, juncos), or don't come around anymore (crows). The chickadees and mouse of the other songbirds I didn't list are easy to please.

the squirrels also chase away the starlings so win win

My grandpa loved feeding birds as well squirrels, for the same reason you mention above.  What he hated was cats who wanted to use his yard as a hunting ground.  He had a single pump bb gun and no screens in his windows so it was bombs away.  He could hit a cat once on the ground, once in the air, and by then laughing so hard he couldn't get another shot off.  At most it stung the cat a bit and served as a feline learning opportunity.

Winter can be brutal on our little feathered friends, so I go right to sunflower hearts and chips mixed with a premium winter blend that includes dried cherries, nuts, etc.

Squirrels are persona non grata around here, but in extreme cold, I'll throw out a few kernels of corn for them somewhere away from the feeder.

We put out a bowl of corn/sunflower seeds for the squirrels away from the bird feeder. Yesterday they were sharing along side a rooster pheasant. Fun to watch from the house.

When we built the new cabin in 2014, that summer my parents would hear dings out the roof at night. They thought the neighbors were tossing pinecones at the roof. Turned out, the squirrels would toss the pinecones from the trees onto the roof and watch them roll off the roof and make them into a pile on the deck.

I bought a bird feeder off the internet about a year ago that has a motor in the base where the birds sit.  So long as birds are on the base, nothing happens.  When it feels the weight of a squirrel, the base spins quickly and flings the squirrel.

The squirrels have learned to avoid my feeder.  So now I only have birds.

Tomorrow is going to be an interesting drive for me as I head to our jobsite in David City, Ne.  Interesting in that I want to see how bad the area between here in Mankato and Nebraska got hit with snow.  Nebraska still had some highways closed yet this morning, though I think it is a lag in reporting the roads rather than them being in crap condition yet.

Around Columbus, Nebraska is a mess.  Some county roads I was on today had 4-6' drifts along the road.  In town is much worse, you get about a lane and half of a two lane road to get around.  According to the owner of the local lumberyard I went to they haven't had a storm like this in this area in about a decade.  It shows that they don't have experience how to clean this much snow up.

Driving back from Nebraska sucked all the balls.  It was snowing light and fluffy snow that semis would blow around and make the road disappear by Sioux City.   Not fun.  Exhausting truthfully.   Glad to be home and off the road.

Springfield or Nevada?

Something I've noticed driving in rural MO is a people proudly display their plumbing & automotive history in their yards.

My paternal grandparents moved down to Ash Flat, Arkansas after my dad graduated high school. Eventually they moved back up here when their health started failing, and we (My dad, my uncles, and I) went down there to clean up their house to get it ready to sell. Every square inch of that acre was covered with vehicles, although the three (3!) school buses made that somewhat easy.

Isn't that the same phenomenon as Banana Belt Rapid City? This might be better directed to the meteorologists on board.

I think there are differences based on elevation and wind directions. But not too familiar with Rapid City's weather patterns.

The fog out here on the prairie this winter has been crazy because of the melting snow and warm temps. I think they have said we have had over 20 days of fog since Jan 1st. It has been the really thick variety. If we go by the old wives tale, then 90 days after fog you get moisture. That could mean that April will be a very wet month. We will see...

Dug the 4 wheeler out of the shed for a spin around the farm. No standing water or snow in the fields. Forecast of 60+ on Monday and again next weekend. I will dig out a couple of patio chairs and will have patio beers on Monday. Last year we had a 2 day Blizzard with 20 inches of snow this weekend. This "winter" weather has been unbelievable.

Perfect afternoon after spending the weekend at the Tourney...

- Replaced all 3 toilets in the house. Have one next to the driveway if anyone wants a free toilet. It works great, just changing from 2" to 3" flush valves. I'll even throw in a wax ring. I use rubber seals instead.

- Dug a 2' hole for the new flagpole in the yard.

- Some quick landscaping projects...

- Filled the start of a sink hole in my driveway.

Keep your stick on the ice...

I took this picture earlier today to have, cause I said my yard looks white trash. Toilet for free in the yard and 2 of the 3 garage stalls filled with boxes.

I enjoyed the first drive in awhile with the window down, but I am worried what June, July, and August  are going to feel like with it this warm early march. 😬

My weather underground app is now forecasting 18” of snow starting Sunday.  And with temps in the 30s this will be heavy heart attack snow.

Yikes!

Round #1 of the weather coming on Thurs-Fri.  The 2nd round for the weekend looks much worse depending on the temp. Early "guesses" for me on 1 site is 20 inches this weekend. We need the moisture, but would prefer it as rain.

I checked with GPL's resident meteorologist and asked if the 10+ forecast (overall) made sense to her.

Yes, 2-3 in by Friday morning and 8-10 inches by Monday morning

Watching the Sunday storm. If it shifts north, we’ll see less…which it did a bit today

Spring storms are especially hard to predict snowfall totals with the temperature being at or above freezing.  If the temperature changes a couple degrees from the forecast, the snowfall totals can change dramatically.

It's been crazy watching the forecast changing multiple times a day.  One thing that seems for sure by all the weather people is that the amount will change daily if not hourly up until it starts happening.  Even the weather people here in Nebraska, where I'm working this week, are telling people that this system is moving too much right now to nail down the amounts or type of precipitation is going to fall.

For as much as I like winter and want the cold and snow. This winter had it's perfect timing. Allowed me to build 2 sheds (10'x12' and 7'x7') with out worrying about the snow or cold on the days of build. I also have been able to get some other projects done since the ground isn't frozen. Projects that might have had to wait till April or beyond. So for this "possible" snow fall coming is coming at a bad time. It's Spring Break next week for the kids I was going to finish some stuff outside along with some cement work Sat-Wed before we take the kids to Omaha for a long weekend to the zoo.

Theyll be fine, don’t cover them.  I’ve had tulips and daffodils pop up through several inches of snow and it never affected them at all.

Theyll be fine, don’t cover them.  I’ve had tulips and daffodils pop up through several inches of snow and it never affected them at all.

True, but 6+ inches of heavy snow may crush them

No it won’t, they’ll be fine.  Bulb leaves are leathery and very sturdy.  If it snowed on a daisy that’s a different matter, tulips will survive.

Note: Due to inflation dirty deeds will no longer be done dirt cheap.
