I had a 100 degree change a few years ago. It was -20 when I left here and it was almost 80 when I landed in Los Angeles. Was fricking amazing.
Not as big of a change, but somewhat humorous. Left MPS in mid Feb. and it was in the negatives. Arrived in Vegas and it was in the 50°'s. People thought we were nuts for not wearing coats, until they found out we were from Minnesota.
Keep your stick on the ice...
I had a 60 degree change one day back in '09 or '10. Was 20 degrees here and 80 degrees in Nevada, Missouri...in January. There were tornadoes that night...in January. I wasn't impressed.

I believe it is because we are so far away from any ocean.
It can work both ways. When my dad first started with Mother Mining we lived in the Baltimore-Washington DC area and he recalls leaving Baltimore and it was around 30F and it felt super cold due to moisture and clouds. He would land at MSP and it would be -5F and felt so much better since it was dry and the sun was shining.

Going from one city to another is practically cheating. When my wife left Mpls to move here it was 0F at MSP and when she landed in Manila it was 90F.
How about same/next day in the same city? I seem to recall Minnesota had around a 50 degree same-day change in January around 2009. And I feel like from one day to the next we've seen 10F to 70F the next day in April before, but I don't remember exactly.
This has always amazed me.
One of my great uncles lived in Winona and was one of those lightly dressed duck hunters, he was lucky to live.

I can relate. The most miserable winter I ever spent was in Newport, Rhode Island. The temps rarely (if ever) got below 20°F, but between the wind whipping off Narraganset Bay and the moisture in the air, it seemed like I could never get warm.

I came back from Viet Nam, in January, and was stationed at Minot. There were nights of -75 wind chills. Took awhile for my system to adjusts.

Which culture shock was greater? Vietnam or Minot?
My money is on Minot. ? ?

Last night I had my first beer in 6 months as per Mayo instructions and was promptly rewarded with a nice .4" rain overnight. Coincidence? I think not.

There was a day (years ago), when I had my Jeep. 80 at my place, drove out to St Boni, and the temp dropped hard. Enough where it was hard to put the top back up. Apparently, it dropped 40 degrees or something within the hour. Just a very fast moving cold front. I thought I was just misguided on that, until I read the news the next day.

Several years ago we met some friends for an overnight camp at gooseberry falls, in late may or so. It was 80 something degrees in the metro.
checked the weather, only supposed to get into the 60s overnight up north…so that’s what we packed for.
We needed to stop for gas (somewhere around black bear casino area), it had clouded up but as we pulled into the gas station, we noticed people wearing winter coats and thought it was a little weird…..
Of course it snowed that night. ?
Last night I had my second beer in 6 months as per Mayo instructions and was promptly rewarded with 1.1" rain. I'm sensing a pattern here.
It was a wonderful rain but we needed it a month ago.

I got skunked again. Lucky to get the .97 last Saturday

It just dropped 20 degrees on our way north up on 35 and still dropping. It’s 63 already! ?

That's fine and dandy if one works in an A/C environment. I don't. 😉

I text my sister who lives in the Valley and she told me that the LA River is actually a river right now.

Bodacious amounts of rain for the Coachella Valley, sounds like the eye passed over Palm Springs/Palm Desert/Indo/Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage/Indian Wells area, which is where my parents have a 2nd home. Palm Desert, where they winter, received almost 4 inches during the storm and to put it into perspective they average about 4 inches a year. The bigger issue is gravity, as rain falls in the surrounding mountains it rushes immediately into the valley filling - and overflowing - the washes (normally dry river beds) where a majority of the water drains. Almost ten inches of rain fell in the mountains so it's a lot of water rushing down. Many of the roads built over the washes a not bridges but more like earthen dikes with culverts for water to pass through. Normally the design is not an issue but when all the water in the world is trying to go downhill to the Sultan Sea these sites wash out easily.
Some of the pictures and video on Twitter or X or whateverthehellitisnow are amazing. Luckily for my parents they are 1) not near a primary wash and 2) they are a couple miles from the mountains so they seemed to fare ok.
Edit - This tweet has some pretty good pictures.

My shirt was soaked after about 10 minutes outside this morning, so I got all of my outdoor farming work done before 10 am today and a now camped in the basement for the rest of the day. Same will go for tomorrow.

Today is the last day of my golf league. I'm suggesting that everyone get a riding cart and bring water.
I just did a lap around (walking) Como, it was not too bad.

Heat Index at my nearest reporting station is 114.
It is 64° by the lake in Duluth. I’d like to claim genius in planning this get away, but it’s just dumb luck.
Currently 81F at 730 a.m. with enough humidity for fish to survive out of water.
I don't work in an A/C building, so ugh.
Checked the Hopkins weather station at about 5:50, and it was 103 temp, felt like 124.

Dug into the Hopkins weather station, and it's about a mile south of me. Today's highs/lows/avg:
Temperature | 105.8 °F | 70.3 °F | 83.9 °F |
---|---|---|---|
Dew Point | 82.6 °F | 61.9 °F | 72.7 °F |

10:40pm, Hopkins.
Temp: 87
Dew Point: 78
Heat Index: 101
This is pretty ridiculous.

Ok...I've seen the argument all over social media today. Do you prefer a day like today 110 heat index or a day in February at -10 wind chill?
I'll start...-10 wind chill and I don't hesitate a millisecond to respond that way.

Agreed. Granted, as I get older, I'm less tolerant of the cold, but I'll still take the wind chill over this $#!+ any day. This is just oppressive.

How do you get the tweet to show instead of the link?
I don't think this is balanced. -10 Wind chill is not as outlandish as 110 Heat Index (around here) (I golfed yesterday evening with the heat index > 110.)Ok...I've seen the argument all over social media today. Do you prefer a day like today 110 heat index or a day in February at -10 wind chill?

Aren't we allowed to hate both?
If I had to choose, I'd rather have 110 heat index. I don't love it, but at least my face and lungs don't hurt in the heat like they do in the bitter cold. I can still go outside and get my daily 4 mile walk in (like I did the last 2 days). I can't do that in -10... let alone having to deal surfaces covered in ice/snow.

This. I've been in non-AC warehousing for mumble/mumble years, I don't even own shorts, so I'm more used to being hot than cold. I also prefer hot weather. Dew points can burn in hell, though. I don't care if it's 60 or 100, if the air is thick, ugh. Today wasn't as bad as yesterday, for sure, though. Today was begrudgingly passable.
