The rainy season appears to be officially upon us here, and it's amazing how quickly the switch can be flipped from absolutely no rain for 5 months and oppressive heat into non-stop rain and cooler temps. The number of days in which there's a happy medium is currently at 0.

we got 3/4 of an inch in hudson last night, I don’t want too much or I’ll have to start mowing again
NWS says 1-2 inches for us tonight. Pretty bold forecast being every system that's headed our way for the last two months has turned out like Moses parting the Red Sea.

Same forecast here. Of the 4 sites/tv stations I monitor it ranges from 1/4 inch to 2 inches for tonight. It rained to the north and south of us this last weekend and we got zilch as well.

Congrats to the talking weather heads again... We got rain... less than a tenth of an inch.... so much for the 1-2 inches predicted.

Should have predicted 1-2 drops. Didn't even speckle the sidewalk.Congrats to the talking weather heads again... We got rain... less than a tenth of an inch.... so much for the 1-2 inches predicted.
After no significant rain since May... We got 2.5" in Norwood Young America

Seems ironic that on one of the hottest days of the year, the State of Mn releases that they spent a record amount of money to clear snow last winter.

Aloha!
Got .5" last night. Our biggest rain of the month and puts us over an inch for July. It soaked away so fast you'd never know it rained.
Looking at these 775 precip reports I see quite a few reports for Andover and Ham Lake ranging from 1 to 1.5". Then several reports from Coon Rapids of 0.1" That's quite a drop off considering Andover and Coon Rapids share a border. Oddly a lack of gauges for Blaine, but it rained like hell for a while so I estimate we are on the 1" side of the gradient.
East Bethel reports from 2.2 -4" Wow. 5 miles north of us and 3" more rain. 1-2 miles south of us and almost nothing.

Watching the storms run through last night, there was a sharp cut-off for the storms. Around 252/610 interchange, it's a "trace" meaning something fell, but was less than 0.01 inches. I'm a spotter in that system, so I'm one of the "T" entries on the map before it drops to 0
The 0s and Ts mixed together are a combination of spotty rainfall, and sometimes that it may have rained a very little bit, but so small an amount, they didn't see any in the gauge in the morning, and didn't know that it had, so a 0 gets reported.

Storm just rolled through with a big blast of wind out front. Temp dropped 20 degree in about 20 min
About 4:30 today off of 494/Carlson Pkway went from cloudy to all the rain/wind/some small hail. Lasted about 15-20 minutes, then it was sunny. I mean, it was TORRENTIAL during the short time it happened.

Ok, the websites and the talking heads say that my area is going to get between 1 and 3 inches of rain from Friday thru Sunday. We will see. The odds certainly are going up on Saturday night since we have tix to an outdoor concert at the fair. It would be the 2nd time in 3 years that a concert we have had tix to would be rained out. I guess we need to have more outdoor concerts to get the rain machine going...

How are the crops generally doing? Is rain still critical? Or are most farmers doing well coming into harvest season?Ok, the websites and the talking heads say that my area is going to get between 1 and 3 inches of rain from Friday thru Sunday. We will see. We're getting pretty burnt up here. Had 1.7 in June and 1.4 in July. How are the crops generally doing? Is rain still critical? @bertogliat My crops are hanging in there and are better than last years drought, which was the worst crops I have ever had. I have some crops on sandy areas and they are burned up. A good shot of rain would go a long way to help finishing out the crops by filling out the ears and the soybean pods. It is much worse as you get closer to the Cities, and in central Minnesota, as Norm can tell you. We still have not had a rainfall event of more than an inch of rain since April, just a few showers here and there. It has been really spotty this year, and the "system" that is expected this weekend is more of a widespread event, which is good.
Edit-- I looked and have had 1.6 in June and 1.8 in July.

And another thing. The Drought Monitor is a joke. They have us in the least severe category.
Also, my garden is quickly ripening for the year. Potatoes, cucumbers, beans, peppers are all at the end stage. I even have pumpkins that are already orange.

I drove through this on my way to our tournament Friday night. Probably the hardest rain/wind combo I've ever had the displeasure of driving through. Saw numerous cars pulled over and everyone else was going about 5mph for a good chunk of time. When I got home I saw a bunch of branches and trees downed in my area.
Radar is indicating our SW MN farming GPLers may be getting some much needed rain. Sure hope so!

We are sitting at a little less than an inch so far, with a little more wrap around rain today. Very beneficial rain.

We were supposed to get near and inch and it now looks like we’ll be skunked.
I thought I had a day off and now I have to mow.
Sprinkle, solid soaking rain, sprinkle for downtown Hopkins. Repeat.

The good news is the lawn is mowed. Now I have 3 types of weed killer to apply but I have to wait for a day with no chance of rain. My wife invited the neighbor ladies over so I can’t string trim. I don’t like making a one day project into two, but what can I do?
Forecast here was 1.5 to 2.5. We got .25, haven't had a soaking rain here in the Bechyn area since Mothers Day.Radar is indicating our SW MN farming GPLers may be getting some much needed rain. Sure hope so!

Be my neighbor…put on your “no fat chicks” t-shirt, carry a beer in your hand, fire up that string trimmer anyway and end up sad and alone. Or not. ?
Note: Due to inflation dirty deeds will no longer be done dirt cheap.
Mankato area had 1"-2+", just a good all day soaking rain that you like taking a nap to. I had 1.25" in West Mankato but I've talked with some people on the hilltop in North Mankato that got close to 3" of rain. Crazy part is the ground soaked it all up and it virtually dry on the surface.

@zwak what kind of Dew Point is required to register a Heat Index of 158°F? Ambient temp alone won't get you there.

A 104°F temp with 65% humidity gets you a heat index of 152°. That makes for a dew point of 89.9
I've never experienced a DP higher than 82, I think. I prefer the 54 DP of tonight in STP. Anything above 70 is oppressive; how can a human tolerate a DP of 89.9??
90+, even 100+, and dry is one thing. Matching or close to matching temps/DP is what I cannot stand.

I did some digging into MN weather records.
July 18-20, 2011 Moorhead experienced a dew point of 96.2 and a heat index of 142.8.

Furthermore, the AWOS is surrounded by sugar beets and soy beans “two of the most prodigious transpiring plants”.
You may have already seen this, but it makes me think maybe The Valley of the Sun should plant some sugar beets to improve their uncomfortably low DP. I hate hand lotion but resort to using it when in the Phoenix area in the winter.
I *think* I remember that the upper midwest has some of the most extreme annual temps (and also heat index/windchills) in the world. If you really think about it, we range 120 degrees in normal temps every year. That's insane.

I had a 100 degree change a few years ago. It was -20 when I left here and it was almost 80 when I landed in Los Angeles. Was fricking amazing.

I had a 60 degree change one day back in '09 or '10. Was 20 degrees here and 80 degrees in Nevada, Missouri...in January. There were tornadoes that night...in January. I wasn't impressed.

When I lived in Bahrain there was a 30-day or so stretch when the heat index never fell below 100F even at night. The average temps weren't always that bad, but despite what a lot of people always assumed about my time there, the average humidity was around 75%. And yet it probably rained for a total of about a few hours the entire year I was there.
Not as extreme a difference, but the weirdest one I ever had was going from Minneapolis to Vegas in July (late 90s). Was about 95 degrees and 75+% humidity here. Got to Vegas, and not only did the humidity drop (as expected) but it was only 80 degrees.I *think* I remember that the upper midwest has some of the most extreme annual temps (and also heat index/windchills) in the world. I believe it is because we are so far away from any ocean.

I've mentioned this before, but more just Mpls for metro cities. Someone replied and if I recall they said Mpls. is the second most extreme metro city outside of a metro city in eastern Europe, maybe Russia (if I recall).
Side note: One time I was at the gym and the temps outside was -20° with windchill. I was in the sauna and the temp is around 180°. I said between this wall it's nearly 200° difference. The other guys in the sauna thought that was pretty cool.
