This below zero bad weather BS at Christmas is getting old. Seems in recent memory that we have had more bad weather Christmases lately than nice, a little snowy, seasonable temperature Christmas.

I would say that last week's snowstorm/weather would have made for a great Christmas. This below zero crap, ugh. Yes, born and bred MN, I still live here, wouldn't trade for anything, but still not a fan. I know, I'm weird.

From GPL's resident meteorologist.
It’s a weird start to the system so I’m not convinced we’ll see more than 5 or 6 Wednesday through Thursday morning. But the wind is no doubt. Generally, Thursday morning through Saturday night; and the surface pressure gradients are about as tight as they get from Friday morning through Saturday morning. Thursday night and especially Friday night will be deadly dangerous - wind chill and temperature wise.Wednesday evening, and Thursday will be tough travel days. And I just don’t even recommend going out at all Thursday or Friday evenings

So glad I have a 5.2 mile commute, with multiple routes for work. Did that by design.

So our hoard is traveling to central Iowa at two different times. I am headed down Friday at noon with my son and son-in-law and then my wife and daughter are headed down Saturday morning because they are working Friday night. I know that this storm has a far reaching path that both of us will have to travel through. I just hope that during those times that travel won't be too difficult.

Edit - think I have my answer.
We're supposed to travel to NE Iowa on Friday for Christmas. From what I'm hearing about the forecast, I'm about 80% sure we won't be making the trip.

Yeah that area is a little more in the line of fire of the larger snowfall amounts so the wind will make it very bad in the land of winding roads. I really don't miss traveling back there during the winter time for my wife's family.

I don't put much faith and trust in weather anchors and or meteorologists. They are wrong more times than not. Basically, I'll believe it when I see it and deal with it accordingly then.

My brother and his family are driving up from Omaha Saturday morning. I think by then it should be better. I sure hope they can come, haven’t had them for Christmas in several years…plus I’ve already bought the turkey. 13 lbs is a lot for just the two of us! ?

Blasphemy! My wife and I were alone for Thanksgiving, and we managed to finish off a 13# bird and all the fixings. Nothing better than Thanksgiving leftovers - turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing, gravy, ...

LOL, my hubby wouldn’t mind it a bit. Honestly I like leftovers better. Turkey sandwiches, turkey wild rice casserole. I could skip the bare bird and go straight to the day after.

Yes we're very excited, especially Patti since she hasn't since Gus since last Christmas. We've rented a mountain villa in January and some family friends will be joining. Can't wait.
Simple pleasure from the weather - appointments at work canceling. Got to go home early today, closing early tomorrow so a few extra extra holiday hours!!
Pet Peeve from the weather - had my first fender bender today (that did not involve a deer). ? Had a green left turn arrow, I’m halfway through the intersection (having pulled out slowly due to the snow) so at least five seconds have gone by and a guy runs the red light. I’m able to stop, but get rear ended in my new wrangler. Only hit the spare tire but not sure if it may have pushed in a little and damaged the back door where it attaches. Lady was thankfully nice enough to follow me to exchange info and wait for me to contact police in case I need to get insurance involved. (They were so busy the officer just did it by phone). I hope no damage as I don’t think this woman has much money (and has no drivers license). I felt bad calling the police but wanted backup in case I do need vehicle repair.
Thankfully no injuries as she had kids in the car (I can’t imagine she was going more than 10mph).
Please please please please please - leave extra following distance when you drive. Always. But especially in this weather.
Be safe everyone!
Always call the police, just in case. Yeah, it sucks, but get it on record.

Sounds like KR is inviting us over if her relatives can't make it. ?
I had a fender bender a couple days ago. I was turning out on 169 from the road that leads back to Minneopa Falls. A kid was driving waaaaay too fast locked up his brakes trying to turn off of 169. I could see he wasn't going to get stopped before he hit me in the door. So I gave my work truck the gas and he only hit my truck in the back fender behind the wheel. Then I look to my left and here comes a Ford Explorer, she does an amazing job of missing me. Unfortunately for her there was a truck just behind her that she turned into. The truck ran into her driver's side rear but he took the brunt of it, his front fender and bumper crumpled up into his tire and blew that.
As bad as all that could have been I am glad that everyone walked away. It was another case of someone driving too fast for the conditions. As I look ahead to my travels this weekend heading to Iowa I hope that all others on the roads practice some mindful driving.

It's crazy the amounts of drivers who drive waaaaay to fast on the hwys and streets in these conditions. As well as running red lights. Red light running is getting worse and worse. Glad to hear @Cowgirl and @g-manpuck are ok and with minor damages to vehicles.
Keep your stick on the ice...
I am not sure where to post this getting ready for work today all the local networks were saying traffic is terrible leave early if you need to drive, I did and I had no issues driving to work on 169 in Minnetonka
Aloha!

Channel 4 has their mobile weather watcher driving around to show conditions. Last night they were talking about how slick and dangerous it was. Guy was on the freeway probably doing 50-60mph.

Word of warning: we do traditional Christmas crackers. You would be required to wear a paper party crown, read bad jokes and participate in table games.

77 from Rosemount to Mpls. was a little slick this morning and with the wind made it spotty. And I'll never understand the person who wants to take it slower, drive slowly (20 less than posted speed limit) but wants to drive in the left lane. It doesn't bother me that they are driving slower, it bothers me they are camped out in the left lane.

I'm not the best driver in Minnesota, but by far not the worst. My wife always tells me I drive 5-10mph faster then I should for the conditions of the road, regardless of what season it is. And I still get passed... lol!!! Even WPoS and @Viking have told me I might drive a little too fast on are road trips.

Slow drivers like this chucklehead are a far bigger hazard than a few miles over.

When it comes to operating in bad winter wither the MSP airport operations team is second to none. I think the video is from yesterday or Wednesday and can't help but think our und friend Mike would have loved seeing this.

The Duluth/Superior harbor area is turning into a parking lot right now, too. There are 8 ships in the port (all but one of them have been there a minimum of 24 hours so far) plus 5 more anchored outside the port with another on the way down from Two Harbors to park and wait out the storm.
B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?

I'm pretty sure I've read or heard that MPS winter operations team is the best the country, if not the world.
RIP Mike... it was just a year ago the end of Oct.

How much fun can it be anchored at port on a ship in the middle of a storm?!?!?!

There is cold then there is stuck on Lake Superior or in the Duluth-Superior port on a metal ship with temps way below zero and howling winds. I can't even....

Same. Although my reason is that the entire time I’m there I can’t get ABBA out of my head.

I have successfully avoided for 50+ years and don't see that changing.
Especially based on your recommendation! ?

That song (or anything by ABBA, really) should be against the Geneva Convention. It's a crime against humanity and having it stuck in your head is a fate worse than death.

My grandparents lived most of my youth in Waterloo...I went there A LOT!
Its really annoying, like as soon as I saw that he worked for Channel 7 all I can think of is "KWWL...IOWAS NEWS CHANNEL!!!" which was their tagline. Since my grandparents didn't have cable that was one of 3 stations we could watch and at least it was the NBC affiliate!
People ask why I hate Iowa...Waterloo is a major reason! Though the old Chucky Cheese buffet in Cedar Falls was always nice cause I was fat and loved pizza back then! 😉
Visibility here 100 miles west of TC is virtually zero. Can't even see if we have birds at the feeder 10 feet from our house.

The winds have definitely picked up again. The drifts are hard as a rock. My 40 year old snow blower behind the tractor will be tested tomorrow when I get a chance to try to blow us out.
I was recently informed by a GPLer that I'm related to Airey
Picking up here too. Might lose the screen door that doesn’t like to latch properly by the end of this one.

Probably not a surprise to our contingent from SW & southern MN; I-90 closing at 2PM.
