I have a friend in Fort Myers and he's been posting videos of preparing for the storm. He just posted a video live of him walking his dog. Lots of standing water in the streets. Just no where for it to go. The ground was already saturated and all the canals and ponds are full prior to this hurricane.

Is he actually sticking around in Ft Myers? I certainly wish him luck staying safe.

Riding it out. Has all his windows and doors board up with corrugated metal sheets. Has a generator and propane tanks if needed. Has really nowhere to go. So him, his wife, 3 kids and 3 dogs are riding it out.

I have three coworkers in Cape Coral. They tried to leave, roads were a parking lot. They’re shuttered up and riding it out as well.
That's what my buddy was saying when he was living streaming yesterday. The hurricane was suppose to hit further north in the Tamp area and then Ian turned to the Fort Myers area. And he even mentioned the highways were gridlock. Though if anyone can survive through a hurricane this guy can. Minnesota boy with many years of survival training and military training.

My coworker said she had a tornado touch down in her housing development and she lives in the Fort Lauderdale area. I can't imagine what those on the west coast of FL are going through.
I’ll take a blizzard over a hurricane any day of the week.
Agree... I'll take 2'-3' snowstorm/blizzard once a year over having to deal with a hurricane once every couple years. Even though you can plan a couple days for a hurricane, it still sucks. Sucks more than a tornado and does you can't plan for, until almost moments before it happens.

When they do hurricane evacuation there it’s a parking lot even though they open both directions of lanes on the interstates to help speed it along. I’m sure I- 75 was a mess and I-4 is a nightmare on a normal day.
My wife’s aunt and uncle are at their house in Naples right now and they decided to ride it out. She said as of 10am this morning they already had 10” of rain and a lot of heavy winds
Holy storm surge, Batman.

Florida is the flattest state in the US. Only 345 feet between highest and lowest points. Has to make it even more susceptible to flooding.
FYI, Minnesota is the 5th flattest.
In case anyone in interested, Kansas is, indeed, flatter than a pancake.

If you live inland or not right where the hurricane comes ashore you might as well ride it out. You’re not planning for the hurricane itself, you’re planning for the 2-3 days after with no access to food and water. Not having electricity is obviously an inconvenience but not having air conditioning is the crappy part.
Although Minnesota is around 1000 feet above sea level

Near the water I'd be planning for the hurricane itself. Some of the one story homes affected by storm surge had water to the soffit. Some homes were completely swept away by the surge of water.
Further inland wait it out and and deal with the insufferable heat/humidity. Hopefully you have a generator, a bunch of gas and a small window AC to allow you to sleep. I would have a chest freezer full of ice blocks.

Not only is it flat but it is always wet. Anywhere you go in south FL they have canals that are used to drain away excess water. They're always full but they move slow due to the lack of elevation. You can only do so much when the water won't go anywhere.
I'd be afraid of alligators for a while. They'll be looking for high ground to sun themselves.
My wife's sister lives in Punta Gorda. Said storm damage was minimal. We kept seeing on the news how bad it was there.

And sharks. Just saw a video of shark swimming in Ft. Myers.

I went to Lowes at lunch to buy some electrical supplies and there was a guy with a large generator on a cart talking on the phone about a place they own on Sanibel Island (hit very hard). I overheard him saying he had an electrician lined up to install the generator and they were loading up a large van with supplies to bring down to help people.
Then I got home and I saw on CBS News that the causeway to Sanibel Island was destroyed. Now I am curious how he plans to get his vehicle over to the island. And he'd better bring a lot of gas with him.

Unfortunately fake. This photo has been used across the world over the last few years anywhere there’s been flooding. Only reason I looked into it is because it looks like a crocodile, not an alligator.
There are a lot of fake and recycled pics and vids surrounding the flood. Too many people believe what they see on social media these days without doing their homework. ?
I figured it was one of @gator relatives
Right after college I had a 3 bedroom apt with two buddies. I was seriously thinking of getting a baby gator and thank. My roommates voted me out… lol!!!

I knew the gator/croc picture was fake when I saw it posted in a post blizzard twitter thread.... ? ? ? ?

One of my farms is in the red, and the other is next to it. The soybean harvest foe me was my worst I have ever had in the red area. I'm starting corn on Monday, and it will also be the worst I've had in the red area. My farm to the south will do better, but well below average. The farms are 15 miles apart.

We've been bone dry here 2 years in a row now.
Decent chance of T-storms tomorrow evening, but they if they do materialize they're supposed to be here and gone quickly and not the the steady soaker that we so really need. But the real story over the next two days will be the wind. Expect wind speeds well into the teens and twenties. Probably time to put the clubs away until next spring.
I can say the wind was brutal throughout WI this past Sat. Didn't matter if open fields, or in the city, it made it brisk. Yesterday and today were even a bit breezy here in the homeland.

Ironwood MI got a foot of snow today
Aloha!
Feels more like April or May than November... Crazy thunder and downpours. Much needed soaking rain with the ground not being frozen.

My work changed over their operating system, so we have a team of people from around the nation here, walking us through it, training, etc. My "tutor" is from Dallas. He has no comprehension of below zero, much less below freezing. He said he almost wants to experience it, to see how it feels.

Didn’t expect the roads to be so bad after the game tonight. Headed back to the east metro I saw at least 4 spin outs/accidents. It was just enough to get the bridges slick and apparently some could not handle that.

For us, it snowed pretty good until we got to Glencoe, but it was fine the rest of the way home. Took our normal 3.5 hours from the parking lot to the driveway. Every weekend we can avoid the bad roads is a win.

At least you have the new 4 lane between Carver & Cologne! ?

Do they have plans to do the same between Cologne and Norwood-Young America? That looks like it could be a challenge to make that a 4 laner. Just glad the Halloween-pumpkin thing is closed outside of Carver for the year, as that would always be congested about the time we would pass through there after Saturday games.

I know it's not local, but it is the focus right now...the snow has started in Buffalo NY. Now we wait...

The 4' mark was hit yesterday morning, about 12 hours after the snow started, IIRC.

I’m thinking I might have run the snow blower a couple 13 14 times before I let it get to that point.
'Tis the season where every forgets how to drive. 😉

It kind of looked like no amount of skill and brakes could overcome gravity and ice on that road. That was pretty funny watching the various service vehicles show up and then wheeeee. Hopefully no-one was hurt.
Yeah, looks like the only “knowing how to drive” there is not driving at all.
Bumper Cars without the static electricity.
