I was there during filing of a sequel.  It appeared many of the film crew stayed at our hotel.

Dumb question, was using google flights to look at flights. Got to the end and booking through KLM was like $3000 less than booking with delta direct. They are partners and I can enter my Skymiles info on the KLM site. Has anyone done that or ever had issues booking a flight through a partner?

they are saying they are Delta flights too

no you can book just fine, but you won't get any miles or status qualifiers most likely. If you do, it's a significantly reduced rate.

Anyone have recommendations for things to do in the San Diego area? I'm going out to play Torrey Pines a couple times but aside from that I have nothing planned and will be out there for 5 days.

The Maritime Museum and USS Midway care both very well done if you’re interested in history.  Balboa Park is a great walk with stunning Spanish style houses, I think at least one is open to the public but I forget the name.  The “Gaslamp” district is packed with restaurants and bars and is very lively.  That’s usually where we stay as it’s still an easy walk to the water.  The zoo is one of the best in the country but will be packed!  Last time we went we waited until mid-afternoon and into the evening, mornings are a mob scene of kids and strollers.  Meltdowns and nap time clear out a lot of folks by 2:00.

Note: Due to inflation dirty deeds will no longer be done dirt cheap.

@chill-kessel

I second USS Midway.  San Diego Zoo is also nice.   If you're into wine, you could do a day trip up to Temecula and check out the wineries there.

I had to go to Tijuana for work about a year ago. I would suggest not doing that.

This summer we purchased direct flights to Maui.  After the fire they canceled the direct flight and put us on a flight with a 40 min layover in Seattle.  I did some research and they also had flights that went through Honolulu with much better, and many more layover options times.  Thankfully we switched flights.  How does Delta think a 40 min layover is acceptable?

Also, if you’re going to advertise a direct flight and you switch me to a layover flight, you should at least give me points or move me to preferred + or whatever will give me legroom.  Bait and switch.

Gaslamp is great!  And the San Diego Zoo is awesome BUT if you have a car at your disposal go out to the Safari Park which is like half an hour away.  It is crazy fun and you get driven around in a Jeep to see all the animals.  Had a blast doing that.

I may be wrong, but I think Delta gives you full credit for the miles and qualifiers because they are affiliates...but I have never had to pay attention since I have a Delta Amex and now they are changing all of the benefit stuff anyways. (easier to get status for me)

Europe and was thinking the same thing. Like $2600 cheaper quoted on KLM vs direct through Delta. I guess we may miss out on miles or chance at upgrades but still earn some miles

I vaguely recall it having to do with your ticket number. But this was from 2017. If it started with a 6 you got 100%. Otherwise it was some fraction.  So if you booked Air France, it was like 50%. Again this was six (Jesus) years ago

time is arbitrary. I'd say almost as many humans use other reference years.

Yea there are different ways of measuring time, but anyone who recognizes the year as 2024 is using jesus years. 😂

Air Canada can eat a bag of dicks and I have added them to the echelon of terribly operated U.S. airlines especially compared to gems such as ANA, Thai Airways, Korean Air and Cebu Pacific among others.

For this trip from MSP to BKK and return (our kids coming to visit and now currently returning back) some legs were operated by AC and others by United. They are both experienced fliers and even the legs done solely by AC they were not impressed by the planes, the service, the meals and the number of delays, etc.  And in this case on the return a delay so bad we had to book them a hotel room in Denver to otherwise avoid the alternative of adding 2 more legs and more than a full day of travel.

I’ve used AC quite a bit due to my father in law residing in Toronto. Never had a problem until the pandemic. Pretty much count on delays now, even with such a short trip. My wife and I and her father have spent days at our respective airports (Both MSP and YYZ) numerous times due to staffing shortages, so they say. Primarily luggage handlers so I’ve been told.

A lot of memories there growing up, and again with my kids the last few years.

That one hits hard, was just texting with a close friend who is a Nelson from Lutsen - his side family was not part of the resort business - and he is devastated.  He lives out of state now and the pictures he sent during the fire were even worse.

YIKES  Cry

I've got a rental property up in that same area, less than a couple miles away.  That kind of fire is definitely a bit of a nightmare scenario with as old as these buildings are.

Anyone been to Iceland and have some must see recommendations?

Biggest recommendation is to get out of Reykjavik to really see the country.  We rented a camper van and drove the “loop”.  It was fairly easy, you can’t get lost and you can stop at roadside hot springs whenever you want.  The Blue Lagoon is horribly overhyped, expensive and crowded, there are dozens of smaller springs open to the public scattered around. Most are free as they are just there beside the road.  If they’re on private property there is sometimes a honor box with a small fee.  The camper also helped save money as that was our abode too.  We sprang for one nice BnB to break it up but the van worked really well. Iceland is very expensive, but you probably know that.  Budget more for meals than you think, it’s not uncommon to spend over $100 for 2 in a very modest restaurant.  They have to import everything and the prices reflect that.  I was prepared and it still threw me. 😳

So try and get into the countryside for a taste of the real Iceland.  The scenery is stunning.

Area around the Galleria mall in the SW part of Houston is nice and there are some great bars and restaurants in the area.  You can drive to the coast fairly easily and enjoy bars and restaurants with a nice views of the beach/ocean.  I've been there for work a couple of times so we were looking for food and drink after conferences let out.  The baseball stadium is decent for something to do.

Otherwise.... don't go.

My dad had to travel to Houston many times for work & had a great observation:  Houston has all of the disadvantages of LA with none of the advantages. 🤣

Is there anything better than traveling on a beach vacation and cooking dinner on the resort grill with a beer in hand after sunset?

As a hockey parent I don’t get to do this as often as I like.  Nothing better.

There used to be a place in Waikiki (name escapes me - a type of bird?) now since closed that had a giant outdoor pit where you could grill your own proteins. Had a great setting too.  They're not that uncommon either here as well as Thailand. Now it's got me thinking of my next trip.

My wife and her extended family just spent the last week in Cabo.  What a beautiful place.  Wonderfully nice people, brilliant sun and the ocean was perfect.  Great food highlighted by one of the better meals I have had in a long while at Mother Flower.  I had a seafood pasta that was so good I blacked out for a moment.  If any of you are heading to Cabo please do yourself a favor, leave the resort and visit some of the restaurants in the town.  Uber's are so cheap there and you get picked up in a matter of seconds most of the time.

I first visited in 1993... Let's just say that there was barely a road to Cabo much less 4 lane highway lined with places like Home Depot that there are today. You could walk all over. Was there last in 2012 and I still love going even if it has really grown.

Anyone been to Croatia?

Yes, 2 years ago.  Send me a PM with any questions and I’ll tell you more than you want to know.

@kelly-red  At least a little surprised by Russia (especially until the last few years).  I think NK was quite properly assumed by all of us to be on the "nope" list.

Yeah I’m a little surprised you’ve not been to St. Petersburg at least!
