I think it's the worst of the Professor Langdon books.

I read Angels and Demons and DaVinci Code. Never read any of the others. I really thought Hanks was the wrong actor to play the part so i did not enjoy the movies.

I might try the show.........not sure.

I'd probably agree. I loved all 5 books though.

Monsters Inside: The 24 Faces of Billy Milligan (Netflix streaming):

In the late 1970s, an accused serial rapist claims multiple personalities control his behavior, setting off a legal odyssey that captivates America.

It's 4 eps (about an hour each), watched 3 tonight. Absolutely fascinating and mesmerizing, as to what the truth is, and what is not, given the nature of the person in question. I found myself flip-flopping back and forth, asking is this for real, or is this a long-game con artist scam? It's that complex of a case, and once I watch the last ep, I'll dig into it more, doing some fact-finding/etc. Definitely recommend if one is interested in true crime stories.

I enjoyed this. Regarding the main argument [hide]I call b.s. on his story for this reason alone, although there are other reasons. I went back and re-watched these comments a few times to ensure I got this right. When he was first being interviewed by the doctors after his original arrest his true self claimed he was not aware of the other guys. However, he also said the guys told him he did things. "Criminal things". Can't have that both ways. That no one else picked up on that at least not during the program flabbergasted me. [/hide]

I picked up on that, and wondered:
[hide]Is there TRUE separation? Or just a conflict among the personalities? For example, if we were part of the same person, mentally, and I went and did something bad, you were aware of it, but wanted nothing to do with it... I am obviously not educated enough in that field to know how that works, and back then, it seems like they weren't, either.[/hide]

The Monsters Inside:

That last episode changed my opinion. He was mentally ill in some form, but not MPD. Still not exactly sure how to explain him, Dissociative something, don't know which one he would really fall into. No matter how you cut it, it's messed up.

Disassociative is what they now call MPD. He was likely coo coo but I don't buy he had multiple personalities.

Yeah, that fourth ep definitely swayed me against the multiple. I wouldn't be surprised if there are multiples out there, but it wasn't this guy. And there are different disassociative disorders, which I briefly googled.

Dissassociative Identity Disorder is what it is called now (DSM-5 key elements are: the presence of at least two distinct and separate personalities within an individual. Although multiple personalities (alters) exist within a single person, only one is manifested at a time; each with its own memories, behaviors and life preferences. At least two of these identities take control of a person’s conduct at any given time. Lastly, it is critical that the observed disturbances are not a consequence of a substance (drug addiction and/or alcohol addiction) or a general medical condition, e.g., epileptic seizure)).

There are a handful of dissassociative disorders in the DSM-5 but DID is the one people refer to when referring to multiple personalities.

The others are most commonly disassociative amnesia (repressing/inability to remember parts of your life - typically traumatic events), or dissassociative fugue (though this is typically a short term event, whereas DID and DA can be longer lasting). Depersonalization-derealization disorder falls in that family as well, where people report feeling outside of their own body and watching the world around them happen to them, as though almost watching it on TV.

Dissassociative disorders are most frequently a result of severe trauma, and manifest as a way for the brain to try to maintain function and separate the pain from the rest of life.

I get to read stories about this (real life stories) on a semi-regular basis for work (semi-regular used loosely, because DID in particular is an exceptionally rare diagnosis, DA, DF, and D-D are more common, but not as common as many of the other mental health/substance abuse issues I see-perhaps in part due to the fact that a lot of people suffering from these disorders also self medicate with drugs/alcohol).

S4 of Goliath with Billy Bob Thorton has really delivered so far (E3) and I hope it does continue this path of improvement of S2 and 3. The noir/Twin Peaks stylings really work and the new supporting cast - including JK Simmons, Bruce Dern, Jena Malone and Elias Koteas - are tremendous adds.

The series on Pro Wrestling call Dark Side Of The Ring. Although I don't follow pro wrestling anymore, most of these episodes are a peak behind the curtain from years past. Some really interesting ones they have done includes the Chris Benoit murders, the Road Warriors, Owen Hart death and upcoming soon the WWF steroid trial.

I did watch the WWE Channel/streaming/etc series on the Undertaker, thanks to leeching off of Armadillo's account. It was really good. Hopefully the Dark Side series makes it to disc or something.

Squid Game - Netflix Streaming - 9 Episode Korean Drama/Thriller

Squid Game has "a very good chance" of becoming Netflix's most popular show yet, co-CEO Ted Sarandos said Monday. Squid Game was "No. 1 in the world, like everywhere in the world," Sarandos, who is also the head of content at Netflix, said Monday at the Code conference in Los Angeles. "Squid Game will definitely be our biggest non-English language show in the world, for sure." He added that there's "a very good chance it's going to be our biggest show ever."

Surprised no one has posted about it here, given the above . I enjoyed it a lot. There were some good twists, some I saw coming and some I did not. I was able to semi-binge them this week while I was on PTO. My wife is halfway through so I am rewatching them with her. Definitely enjoying the memes and seeing some of the foreshadowing, Easter eggs, etc. that I have seen online after finishing the first watch.

I have that in my a queue but it looks like it's going to be Saw on steroids?

I've read some highly critical reviews that the english subtitles/dubbing was so far off that those fluent in both languages are claiming if you don't understand Korean, you didn't watch the show.

I've seen the first two episodes. What is with the tediously stupid dream/drug sequence episodes? I had to fast forward through the one with JK Simmons singing.

Do they go away later in the series?

They become a bit less prevalent.

Started watching Euphoria on HBO Max over the weekend.

Very very well done so far. I'm about 6 episodes in. Acting is great. Subject matter is very real and not sugar-coated at all (although hopefully slightly exaggerated at times).

Yeah, I read that too - and that it was mainly with the English dub and the closed captions for the dub. The English subtitles were supposedly much better. I watched with the Korean Audio and English subtitles.

Yes, you have to be choosy in subtitles. IIRC on Netflix, you have an option of Original English subtitles (which means it is more closely translated) or plain CC, which is the English vocals overdub that is put into words, as you hear the overdub spoken. Something like that.

He delivers, as always. Thought-provoking and hilarious. Some GREAT lines in the various bits.

As I get older and more crotchety, my favorite comedians have become Chappelle and Bill Burr. I don’t laugh out loud at a lot of comedians but those 2 always deliver for me.

In Chappelle's case, he no longer really gives a sh*. Burr NEVER gave a sh*.

I didn't think it was as good as some of the others just because it seemed like there wasn't as much fresh material. A lot of retreading or updates on his past lines. I still enjoyed it though.

Sticks and Stones was my favorite of his recent specials.

Both the English dub and the English closed captioning for the English dub. English subtitles were fine apparently.

Shows are best in original language. I watched in Korean with English subtitles and loved it.

That's your problem. If you're not going to give the show your full attention, just watch the bastardized English version.

I feel the same way about subtitles and porn.

I don't even notice subtitles anymore, TBH. It's in my peripherals.

I haven't wanted to admit this, but I turned subtitles on a couple months ago on my steaming devices mostly because my wife is a light sleeper and I wanted to watch TV. Since then, I just watch subtitles of everything and honestly I catch WAY more things reading them than not. I know I am getting older, but I am contending that they are on for exploratory purposes.

I live in an apt, and am a night owl. I do it to keep the volume down and still catch every nuance (especially with foreign movies). It's just easier that way, and once you're used to them, you can ignore them at will, but the option is there...

There are several shows/movies we use subtitles simply because the accents - Derry Girls and Ted Lasso come to mind - so they stay on for those streaming services because the process to turn them on/off is a pain.

For cable (Comcast) I usually have them off, especially for live sporting events as the 1) are late and 2) usually interfere the game I'm trying to watch.

Comcast makes turning them on/off very easy. :good2:

I've been using closed caption/subtitles for as long as I can remember.

Started Squid Game and through 2 episodes am excited to see the rest.

I am through 3 episodes of Chapelwaite (mini-series adapted from the Stephen King short story Jerusalem's Lot) and while it's not been perfect I will likely see this one through if it stays on course.

Using subtitles isn’t an old person thing. I have an 18 yo daughter and her and all her friends always have them on.

2nd ep was the lamest. Set aside time to binge the rest cuz you're going to want to.

Yeah I guess you are right. My Mom is old and refuses to use subtitles. Instead the TV is on volume 99. Drives me nuts when I call her and 2 minutes in I have to tell her to mute the TV.

I suppose I'd classify this as TV. I gave in, started watched Squid Game on Netflix streaming. Not what I expected. I expected wacky off the wall crazy, along the lines of Battle Royale (movie that spawned the Hunger Games). It's deeper than that. Much more drama and backstory (2 eps in). I like it so far.

Through Ep 6. It's getting to Korean-level crazy. Not quite full-blown, but we're getting there. I think this series really found the line to hook both Asian and American audiences, and keeps toeing that line, and it's worked very well. We'll see what happens in the last couple of eps.

Scenes From A Marriage on HBO will def be winning some Emmys, especially for acting.

The Billion Dollar Code: Netflix 4-part series about how Google was sued for supposedly stealing the coding for Google Earth from two German innovators. I'm through E2 and it's extremely fascinating.

Been eyeing this one. Good to hear about it.
